Mira woke in a blurry haze. Her room swam before her. She rubbed her temples.
Why the tequila? Why? Such a bad choice always.
She sat slowly and glared at the sun beaming through her windows.
She picked up her phone from the nightstand. Her eyes widened when she saw her screen: 64 email notifications, instagram 78 notifications, X 56 notifications. What the heck?
Mira unlocked her phone and opened her email.
Oh no. No, no, no.
She dialed Catalina. Her friend answered with a soft groan.
"You okay?" Mira asked.
"These people are making me work. They're making me do my job. It's awful." She groaned softly. "Thank the heavens for coffee, honestly. I'm barely functional."
"I remember us going to that Mexican bar. And then. Then I don't remember." Mira climbed gingerly from her bed. "And Catalina, after all those drinks I did something so stupid. I rage-posted a review of that place we went to. Kiss Kiss."
Catalina cackled. "Oh yes I remember that. You were pissed. Something about the chef being a misogynist asshole who is all about sex and a rude knob of butter? You weren't kind. It was hilarious."
"Oh gosh Catalina... I posted that review. Online."
Catalina cackled again. "You did?! I thought it was just a venting session. That's way funnier."
"No it isn't Catalina," Mira whined, standing and wobbling into the kitchen. "I have like a hundred comments about it."
"Well? Do people agree?"
"I can't read, my eyes are too blurry. Need coffee."
"Old lady," Catalina muttered.
Mira set the coffee machine to make an espresso and leaned against the counter, rubbing her forehead.
"I'm almost too scared to read it." She sighed.
"I'll read it!" Catalina said. "Hold on, opening your page now..."
Mira groaned.
"Okay, let's see... Damn it has a lot of traction. Auto-correct saved you I think, there is no way you were this coherent yesterday. Okay. You started off with: Kiss Kiss: the talk of the town. Nobody really knows much about it other than how exclusive and mysterious it is - seats take months to come by, and the location is shrouded in mystery, hidden behind no signage and a password. Look at you go, even when wasted. I am proud," Catalina said.
"Please carry on. Did I post that part about him compensating for something?"
"Okay, skipping over a bit here. Let's see where it gets scathing, that's always the best.... Ah here it is." She cleared her throat. "Well, if you're hoping for a knight in shining armor, prepare yourself for some guy wrapped in tin foil." Catalina stopped to cackle again. "I can't believe you said that."
"Maybe you should skip to the comments," Mira sighed.
"Okay, lets see. Some of these people agree with you. This lady says, yeah what's with all the licking? I just wanted a spoon for crying out loud. Fair point, I guess. She looks lame. Anyway. Uhm. I don't know how to say this gently but most of these people say you're off your rocker. They like his food."
"Ugh. I should take it down," Mira sighed.
"Hold on there, cowgirl. This is your most popular post in, well, in a long time. Maybe it's a good idea to leave it up. No such thing as bad publicity and all that. People are talking, sharing your review. You're being noticed."
Mira groaned. "My best work was written in a drunken haze? What does that say about me?"
"You took some great shots of the food. IPhones are a marvel, honestly."
Mira took the steaming coffee from the machine. "Okay, I have my coffee. I'm going to go and deal with all of these notifications."
"Don't take them personally. People are obsessed with that chef. You should check out his social media sometime. That man is a thirst trap if I've ever seen one."
"Ugh. Gotta go. Love ya."
"Love ya, bestie."
Mira flopped onto the couch and sipped her fresh coffee. If she was about to have a bad day, at least it's going to start with a great coffee.
She started on instagram, and scrolled through the comments. Some agreed with her, saying the place is over-hyped and borderline pornographic. But the majority strongly disagreed, and found the food delightful, and the concept of experiencing it refreshing. Despite these opinions, she hadn't lost any followers. She'd gained some.
Catalina was right - the photos had come out really well. Mira tilted her head and frowned, wondering why. The light wasn't any different to usual.
She opened her other social media and scrolled, but the comments are more of the same: some hate, some laughing, some agreement. Mostly adoration for Kiss Kiss. One comment read, "This review is the opposite of anything I feel for that restaurant but everyone is allowed a wrong opinion now and then. Can't wait for your next review."
Mira sighed and opened her email.
Spam, obviously.
An email caught her attention: [email protected] .
Mira felt her heart drop to her feet. Why were they emailing her? She took a deep breath, hoping this wasn't some kind of email demanding that she take the review down or something along those lines. Wouldn't be the first time, and a lot of these places who run based on reputation need that reputation to remain untarnished. They pay for that online presence by silencing anyone with a negative viewpoint.
She took a deep breath and opened the mail.
"Hi, Mira. We saw your review and thought you had some interesting viewpoints. Would you be open to dropping by to our offices tomorrow at 10?"
