Chapter 12: Superhero to Party Trick Performer

I wake up early the next morning so that I can prepare for Tom's birthday and grudgingly pull my tired body up out of bed and head to the bathroom to get ready. Still half asleep and struggling to even stay standing up, I blindly fumble around for the shower faucet to turn it to an uncomfortable chilly temperature since we have pretty much no hot water in this hell hole.

After a drowsy shower where I swear that I fell asleep standing up at one moment, I turn the freezing water off and pull a towel around myself as I step out onto the cold tile floor. When I finally bring my eyes up to the mirror for the first time I instantly jump back, definitely feeling very awake now.

Instead of the miserable, tired face that looked like it just crawled out of Smeagol's cave that I expected to be staring back at me, I swear that I stared back into a pair of bright red eyes adorned on an icy blue-colored face that was littered with raised markings in its place.

I quickly rub my eyes trying to push the sleep out of them. When I wearily bring my eyes up to the mirror again I sign in relief when I am met with my disheveled, sleep-deprived face. I come to the conclusion that I must have hallucinated since I have not had my first energy drink of the day yet. With that thought, I quickly prance over to my 'room' and lift up the floorboard where I hide all my energy drinks and valuables and pull one out. I break it open and chug the whole thing within a few seconds desperately not wanting to get any more sleep-deprivation hallucinations.

After shaking away the sleep I quietly head downstairs, unsure if Satan is back yet and really not wanting to find out. When I make it to the kitchen I start to pack some sandwiches, crackers, and fruits for a picnic lunch at the park.

Eventually, the kids start to trickle down to the dining room where I then give them the donuts that I got from the clearance section since they expire today as a special treat for Tom's birthday. Tom is already smiling from ear to ear and I can't wait to see his smile when he sees the surprises that I have for him today.

As all the kids are sitting around the table quietly chatting, we all suddenly whip our heads to the stairs and hold our breath as we hear a heavy rustling coming down them. However, I do not recognize them as Ms. Santina's memorable footsteps. My question is soon answered when we see a surprisingly young-looking man appear from around the corner.

I stare at him with a hard glare and he stops in his tracks looking at all the kids sitting around the table who are also all staring at him silently.

"Uhhhhh... hi." The man says as he runs a hand through his mess of bed hair.

I am about to speak up until I hear another more recognizable set of footsteps pounding down the stairs and I tense. When Ms. Santina storms around the corner and eyes the scene in front of her she gives us all a hard threatening glare before the man turns around to her and her face instantly changes to something disgustingly sweet and most likely very forced.

"Sorry if they were bothering you, babe. They are usually very well-behaved." She hisses through her teeth, giving us a side eye at the end as if daring us to say anything.

(A/n - it physically hurt me to write 'babe.' Even though it is literally meant to be very cringy and uncomfortable in this part, I still just hate it with a burning passion. (no offense if you use that, I just personally despise it.)

"Oh, no they-"

"It's ok, baby. Let's just go back upstairs." Satan says with a flirtatious edge.

I practically gag, we definitely need to get out of here as soon as humanly possible.

The very moment that the two of them disappear around the corner I instantly start quickly ushering the kids to grab their things and basically push them out the door. I do not feel like letting the kids get traumatized today.

The whole way to the park all the kids are giddily jumping all around, Tom doing so the most. We never really get to have a day out or are able to get out of the hell hole, so it is always a treat and something we all look forward to when we do.

After walking through the park for a bit, we finally find a good spot to settle down for the day. The kids are all practically vibrating on the spot just itching to run off to play, but before they do I crouch down and usher them all over to me. I go on my usual spiel of the rules, like how to properly punch a creepy stranger if they come up to you and all that whatnot, and then they all rush off excitedly screaming and shouting like an angry pack of savage wolves.

Scarlet and I stay behind to set up the picnic blanket while Benedict wanders off with the kids so that we have at least one slightly more responsible person with them.

"So, what is the other surprise that you have?" Scarlet asks with a raised eyebrow.

"You will just have to see," I say mischievously. "It should be here around lunch."

She looks at me questioningly but ultimately lets it go for now.

A few hours later, the sun now uncomfortably pounding down on me from above at around noon, I excuse myself from the very insightful conversation that I was having with Scarlet as she was informing me of all the drama that went down at her school to go get the kids to eat lunch.

When I go over to where they are playing, very loudly might I add, I find them all piled on top of Benedict who is trying to get up but failing miserably until he gives up and I watch as all the hope drains from his eyes.

I chuckle for a moment until I decide to spare Benedict and loudly whistle in the short toon that all the kids know so well and causes them to all come barreling towards me.

As we all make it over to the giant picnic blanket, the kids instantly dive into the center all fighting for their own sandwiches which are all different and just how they like them.

We all sit around talking as we enjoy our lunch, but as we finish a smile grows even more on my face.

"Hey Tom, we have a gift for you," I say excitedly.

"Really??!?"

"Of course bug, it's your big six years, that is important," I say using the nickname that I have used for him ever since I found him prancing around in a cheap Spiderman costume and jumping from all the furniture. He really does like Spiderman.

I then pull out the white gift box from my bag and place it in front of him, barely holding my own excitement in. I wouldn't be surprised if I was even more excited than him.

As soon as I set it down he instantly tears the box apart, not even opening it like a normal sane person, and instead tears it to shreds. Ok, maybe I wasn't as excited as him.

When his eyes finally land on what now sits in the remains of the box his eyes practically pop out of his head.

"OH FUCK!!" he says with a massive grin.

"TOM?!!?!!!" I shout horrified.

"Where did you learn that word??!"

His excited and giddy look suddenly turns sheepish. "ummmm I heard Jeremy say it. What does it mean?"

I squint my eyes and turn a death glare towards Jeremy for corrupting the designated angel and he rightfully gulps and starts to sweat in fear.

"Nothing bug, but how do you like your gift?"

"Oh yeah! IT'S SO AWESOME I LOVE IT THANK YOU SO MUCH, SIS!!"

I smile fondly and pull him in for a hug. "Of course bug, you deserve it."

Tom always called all of us sisters or brothers for as long as I can remember, and no one ever dared to actually correct him. We practically are all siblings, we certainly act like it, and family needs to stick together.

The wholesome moment is interrupted by the sound of my phone as I get a text. I sadly release Tom from my bone-crushing hug as I pull it out.

Bug-boy
> Im here, let me know when you want me to swing by ;)
> haha get it? swing by? because ya know? yeah?

Scary nerd
> yeah. I got it. just come by now nerd
> we are under the big tree where we saw the squirrel gang fight last week.

I turn off my phone with a sigh towards the idiot on the other end of it. However, my face quickly turns to a large grin and I turn towards Tom once again.

"I actually have another surprise for you." I smile mischievously. "It should be here any... second..." My words drift off as I look at my watch just as I hear the recognizable thwip sound right before Spiderman lands in front of us with his ever-so-recognizable and ever-so-lame superhero pose.

Within the next second, I'm pretty sure that I go deaf.

Once they finally stop their screaming, they all rush up to the masked superhero, Tom of course being the first to reach him.

I simply smile over at him, giving him a mocking thumbs up as I decide to let him deal with the overjoyed and panicking kids. This is part of the job.

"uhh... hi there!" Spiderman says awkwardly while giving a little wave to all the kids that are practically climbing him while also giving me a panicked and pleading look (one which I hastily ignore).

I pull my eyes away from Spiderman begging for help in front of me when I feel Scarlet tap on my shoulder.

"So how did you get this to happen?" She asks with a fond look as she watches all the kids and also with a hint of awe.

"I have my sources," I say jokingly smug while tilting my chin up.

"Well you know my birthday is coming up. Can these 'sources' get black widow to show up to mine?" She asks jokingly, but also with a slight amount of actual hope.

I look over at her suddenly serious. "I am not sure, but I will see what I can do."

"Wait actually?!? I swear if you actually do I will cry! She is just so cool and badass- and she is just so- oh my god!"

I giggle at her fangirling, making a note to do whatever it takes to get Ms. Romanoff to meet Scarlet.

After all the kids finally get off their initial shock, I watch from a distance as they drag Peter off, bombarding him with questions and begging him to show them how he 'flies.' The next few hours are filled with him basically reducing his superhero status to a simple party trick performer, something that I take great enjoyment in.

Eventually, I notice the kids starting to slow down, their energy finally crashing after hours of running around nonstop for the day. I pick up the blanket and all the trash, including the completely mauled fancy white gift box.

I whistle again in the recognizable toon that causes all the kids to start to slowly trudge towards me, Spiderman following behind them and looking just as exhausted.

Once we get all the things packed up I usher everyone to go by their buddies so that we can make our way home. Before we do, Spiderman walks up to me and speaks quietly so that no one else would hear.

"Do you want to walk to the internship together after you drop them off?"

"Yeah, I'll meet you by Delmer's, just give me time to drop them off and settle them in. While you are waiting for me you can try to heal some of your dignity after getting your ass handed to you by a bunch of kids." I snicker at him causing him to grumble and mumble something about 'enhanced metabolism my ass' as he swings away sulking.

After getting back to the orphanage and thankfully finding Satan nowhere to be seen, I settle the kids down, quickly make some dinner for them and rush off to meet with Peter to make our way to the tower.

Once we get to the tower and walk through the lobby to the private elevator going directly up to Tony's lab. Thankfully we never got questioned again after the incident on the first day. Now we get wide smiles and waves from the workers, who all seemed to have taken a liking to us, well more specifically Peter. Within seconds of meeting someone, Peter would instantly have them fawning over him without even trying. You would be insane and should be locked up far away if you didn't instantly love Peter. Maybe there is such a thing as being too wholesome, he has too much power.
