Ball Games
Yena's POV
I smile leaning against a wall as Miguel and my father play with the kids. A crowd has gathered to watch them. Miguel is having so much fun. He'd be an amazing father one day I think to myself and blush faintly. He looks at me as he runs after the ball and smiles.
He bumps into Tulio and I see Chel with him. The ball hits Tulio in the head and I giggle. As I go stand by Miguel as Tulio demands to know what he thought he was doing. "Lying low" Miguel chuckles.
"Having fun" I add smiling. Tulio groans in annoyance. He grips Miguel by his shoulders.
"Look, change of plans. We have to grab what we can carry and get out of here now" Tulio tells him. Miguel and I frown in confusion.
"What? Why?" Miguel asks.
"Because the high priest is nuts" Tulio stresses.
"Chel and I could of told you that" I tell him.
"Sure, but he wants..." he starts to say.
"THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!" Tzekel-kan says loudly.
"Yeah. Yeah. Like he said" Tulio says pointing at him. As Tzekel-Kan picks up the ball Miguel and the kids had been playing with.
"THE GODS SHOULD NOT BE PLAYING BALL LIKE THIS!" Tzekel-Kan states loudly.
"Well, exactly" Tulio agrees. We all go to the arena. Tzekel-Kan still holding the ball.
"THIS IS HOW THE GODS SHOULD PLAY BALL!" Tzekel-Kan states. The crowd cheers as a horn sounds. Tulio glares at Miguel.
"Well, don't blame me" Miguel whines.
"I blame you" Tulio tells him. The crowd is still cheering. "What is the object of this game, pray tell?" he asks Chel and I.
"You have to get the ball through the hoop" Chel mutters.
"What hoop?" Tulio asks.
"That one up there" I say pointing to it. They look up at it shocked.
"That's impossible. We're gonna lose" Tulio groans.
"Gods don't lose" Chel and I tell him. Just then my father's best warriors appear beside Tzekel-Kan.
"My lords, Chief Tannabok's warriors are the finest ballplayers in the city. Fifteen mere mortals against two gods" Tzekel-Kan states. "I realize it's a bit uneven, but I do hope they'll challenge you enough to make the game interesting" he states. "Play Ball" he says as he put the ball down.
"Crush them into the dust" he tells Miguel and Tulio as he passes them. Before going to sit by the father. I stay with Chel by the barrel of balls as the game began. The men rushed the guys and kicked the ball. But stopped and watched the ball bounce.
"My lords, were you supposed to put the ball into play?" Tzekel-Kan asks.
"Ohh! Well, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. We were merely demonstrating the, um, traditional, uh, first avoidance maneuver" Tulio lies.
"Ah. I've never heard such a thing" Tzekel-Kan admits.
"Excuse me. Who invented this game?" Miguel asks.
"Why the gods, of course" Tzekel-Kan says.
"I'm warning you, don't push your luck with this guy" Tulio tells Miguel.
"But, Tulio, we're the gods" Miguel tells him. He tosses the ball and kicks it into play. And teh game finally began.
Needless to say the guys were getting their arses kicked. The score if nine - nil to the warriors. Time out is called and the guys come over to us. Looking worn out. "Are you ok?" I ask Miguel concerned.
"I'll be fine" he assures me.
"How long does this go on anyway?" Tulio asks Chel.
"The game is over when the shadow touches this line" Chel answers pointing to the line.
"We need a miracle" Miguel states.
"No, we need to cheat" Tulio corrects him. Chel holds up her pet armadillo Bibo. Who is curled up into a ball. Tulio smiles taking Bibo and the game begins again.
In no time the guys are tied with the warriors and the warriors haven't gotten another goal. All thanks to Bibo. Who also boosted the guys confidences. There's time for one last goal and they ball rolled out of the arena.
I grab a ball at random and threw it to the guys. Who are now on Altivo. I cheer as they head for the hoop. "Guys, it's here! It's right here with me!" Chel says loudly holding a battered Bibo up. I gasp realizing the guys only have a normal ball. They gasp also and Miguel gets elbowed in the face by Tulio.
But Miguel manages to kick the ball through the hoop. However, it gets stuck. Before Altivo kicked the wall sending the ball through the hoop. A horn sounds as the shadow reaches the line and last gold brick was placed down for the guys. Showing they had won by one point.
"I love this game!" Tzekel-Kan shouts with a laugh. As Chel and I rush towards the guys. I hug Miguel, not caring that he is covered in sweat. As Chel hugged Tulio.
"Well done, partners" Tulio tells us.
"Yes, yes" Chel says smiling brightly.
"I'm proud of you Miguel" I tell him.
"Couldn't of done it without you two" he states with a smile.
"My lords, congratulations on your victory" Tzekel-Kan says as he joins us. "And now, you will, of course, wish to have the losing team, sacrificed to your glory" he says. As my father's warriors bow.
"Not this again" Miguel mutters letting me go. "Look, Tzekel-Kan" he says pointing at him.
"Uh Miguel" Tulio says trying to stop him.
"Forget the sacrifices" Miguel tells Tzekel-Kan. "We don't want any sacrifices" he states.
"But all of the sacred writings say that will you devour the wicked and the unrighteous" Tzekel-Kan states.
"Well, I don't see anyone here who fits that description" Miguel tells him.
"Same" I say grabbing Miguel's hand proud of him.
"Well, as speaker for the gods, it would be my privilege to point them out" Tzekel-Kan states with a scoff.
"The gods are speaking for themselves now! This city and these people have no need for you anymore!" Miguel declares. Pushing past Tzekel-Kan.
"There'll be no sacrifices" I state as Miguel helps the warriors to their feet.
"Not now, not ever" Miguel agrees and the crowd cheers. "Now get out!" he tells Tzekel-Kan. Who scoffs as the crowd cheers louder.
"Mmm. As the gods, command" Tzekel-Kan says. The warriors grab Miguel and I raising us high in the air cheering. They then grab Tulio.
"Hey, not bad for my first commandment, huh?" Miguel asks us.
"Not bad at all" I tell him with a bright smile.
"Miguel, the little voice..." Tulio starts to say. But stops. "Yeah, fine" he says with a small smile.
"I'm proud of you Miguel" I tell him.
"Couldn't of done it without you" he tells me. We are carried to the temple and put down. I say goodbye to the guys and go home for dinner.
