Chapter 26
Yemisi
I jolted awake, disoriented and aching all over. The dim light filtered through a small, barred window, casting eerie shadows on the concrete walls around me. Panic surged within me as I realized I was tied to a chair, my wrists bound painfully behind my back. The air was thick and stale, and the scent of dampness clung to everything.
Footsteps echoed from above, and my heart raced as dread settled in my stomach. The heavy door creaked open, and Mr. Bello stepped into the room, his expression a twisted mix of satisfaction and cruelty.
"Welcome back to the land of the living," he said, his voice dripping with mockery. "I was beginning to think you'd sleep through the grand revelation."
"What do you want from me?" I demanded, my voice shaky but defiant.
"Want?" He stepped closer, his eyes narrowing. "I want you to understand why you're here. You're about to learn the truth about your precious Alessia."
My blood ran cold at the mention of her name. "What truth? You think you can just kidnap me and spill your nonsense?"
"Oh, it's far from nonsense, Yemisi. Let me take you back to the beginning." He began pacing slowly, as if rehearsing a well-worn monologue. "Aderonke and I-your beloved Alessia's mother-we were in love. At least, I thought we were. I had dreams, plans. I thought we would get married. But then she chose a life of comfort over love. She got pregnant with Alessia and tossed me aside like I was nothing."
I couldn't hold back the disgust that bubbled up. "That's no reason to hurt an innocent girl."
He ignored my comment, continuing as if he hadn't heard me. "I spent years working my way up, getting into that prestigious school, waiting for the day Aderonke's daughter would come under my care. And when she did... it was perfect."
The reality of his words settled like a weight in my chest. "You sexually assaulted her her, you... you hurt her."
He grinned, the expression chilling. "I didn't just hurt her, Yemisi. I molded her. I kept her grades in my hands, and she was too scared to say no. She was my way to get back at Aderonke, to make her suffer just as I did. I was her mentor, her guide-but in reality, I was her nightmare."
"Why? Why did you have to kill her and Pamela too?" I shouted, my voice breaking.
"She was going to break our little deal and my plan was not over yet, but her death was just the right thing to make my plan successful, until you came along"
"Successful?!" I spat with rage "How did Pamela get dragged into this?"
"Her death was so unnecessary, but she caught wind of my plan was going to tell you" he said smiling wickedly
"What kind of monster do you have to be?" I screamed
"A monster?" He laughed, the sound echoing ominously in the small room. "No, I'm a man with a plan. And that plan didn't just stop with Alessia. When you started sniffing around, digging into things that were better left buried, I knew I had to act. I had to protect my secret."
My heart raced as he leaned closer, his eyes darkening. "I forced your brother to turn himself in, you know. I
He thought it would keep you safe, keep you from getting involved. But you-" he paused, shaking his head in disbelief-"you just wouldn't quit."
"Because someone had to stop you!" I spat, anger surging through me. "You can't just ruin people's lives!"
His smile faltered for a moment, then returned, wider and more menacing. "But I have, Yemisi. And now that you know the truth, I can't let you leave."
He pulled a knife from his pocket, the blade glinting menacingly in the dim light. "Please, don't do this," I pleaded, my voice trembling. "You don't have to kill me."
"But I do," he said, his tone chilling. "You're too much of a liability now."
As he lunged forward, time seemed to slow. My instincts kicked in, and I twisted away, but not fast enough. The blade found its mark, slicing into my side. Pain exploded through me, and I gasped, feeling warmth spread from the wound.
Everything started to blur around the edges, and I struggled to stay conscious, but the darkness beckoned me closer. I thought of Alessia and the life she never got to live because of him.
"Goodbye, Yemisi," he said, his voice fading into the abyss as I slipped away into the void.
