Chapter 14 (Edited)
Yemisi
I kept my gaze fixed on the investigator, my expression unreadable.
Throughout the entire interrogation, I hadn't uttered a single word.
"My client's alibi is solid, and you have no credible evidence against her," my lawyer said, his voice steady and unyielding. "She shouldn't even be here."
The investigator sighed. "Fine, she's free to go."
"Let's go, Miss Yemisi," my lawyer said, gesturing toward the door. I followed him out of the room, still struggling to process everything that was happening.
I had been calm when we left the house, a surprising sense of confidence bolstering me... until I saw him.
Brian.
He was at the station, giving his statement. I felt no spark, no rush of feelings like I usually did when I saw him. Instead, a strange emptiness settled in my chest.
As he spoke, his words stung. I would have done anything to shut him up.
And then, as if he hadn't said anything wrong, he called out to me with a casual grin, like we were best friends.
When I ignored him, he turned to the officer beside him. "See? I told you she's one cold-hearted bitch."
I lunged at him, finally ready to give him the slap he deserved, but he grabbed my wrist, leaned in, and hissed, "The more you act like that, the more they'll believe you're capable of murder."
In that instant, my newfound confidence evaporated. I felt small, exposed, foolish.
The car ride home was painfully silent. My lawyer and mother busied themselves with anything but conversation, yet my mind was still reeling from the arrest, Brian's accusations, and this dark suspicion gnawing at me.
I was certain Alessia's mother was behind all this. But I needed evidence.
When we arrived home, Kayode was waiting anxiously at the gate.
"At least you could have told me which police station!" he complained, relief softening his voice.
"The point is that she's back, safe," my mother interjected, her tone sharp. "Why do you need the police station details?"
"I made lunch," Kayode said, brightening.
"No wonder we could smell it from here," Ireti teased.
"Wow, I must be an amazing cook," he retorted with a proud grin.
"I never said that," she shot back, and he huffed, heading inside.
"Ireti, I need to go somewhere," I said quietly.
"Where?"
"I'll explain later. Just don't tell Mum or Kayode," I replied. "It's the Baileys' house."

The message on my phone confirmed it: Fikayo's daughter had been arrested. Good. One less problem in my way.
"Madam, I'm done," the maid announced from behind me. I had asked her to clear some papers from the shelf-documents I didn't need anymore.
"Yes?" I looked up, noticing her hesitance.
"I found these papers. I don't know if you still need them?" she said, holding out a small bundle.
I took them from her, my blood running cold. These documents... I thought I had destroyed them.
"Uloma, get rid of these. Right away."
"Yes, ma'am," she murmured, lowering her head as she took them.

The house matched the address Sarah had sent me. I stood before it, took a steadying breath, and rang the bell.
The gate swung open almost instantly, revealing the gateman, who looked at me with a polite but blank expression. "Yes?"
"I'm here to see Mrs. Bailey."
"Alright," he replied and opened the gate, surprisingly without question.
Inside, the place was grand, but it didn't amaze me; it was similar to our home, or so I thought-until I stepped into the main house. The interior was spectacular, and I couldn't help but gape as I took it all in.
The maid led me to a waiting area and then disappeared to inform Mrs. Bailey of my arrival. She returned with a folder, placing it on a side table before leaving again.
A document peeked out from the folder, its tab catching my attention. It looked like a hospital record.
I told myself to ignore it, that it was none of my business. But curiosity won, and I slid the file out carefully.
What I saw left me speechless. I'd suspected something was off, but this was beyond what I'd imagined. I had seen the DNA test my mother had-0%. Yet, here was another test showing 100%.
So, Alessia's mother had lied. She had gone to unimaginable lengths to hide this truth.
A plan was already forming in my mind.
The maid returned, and I quickly tucked the document back. She picked up the folder, muttering to herself.
"Wait!" I called after her. "Are you getting rid of that folder?"
She looked puzzled. "Yes, why?"
"I, uh, need it for a papier-mâché project," I said, offering her a bright smile.
After a brief hesitation, she handed it over. "Alright."
"Thanks!" I said, clutching the folder. "I really appreciate it."
"Aren't you going to wait for madam?" she asked as I started to leave.
"Maybe another time. I need to work on my project," I replied smoothly.
"You're here for the Orphan Sponsorship Program, right?"
"Yes!" I said, feigning excitement. "I'll be back tomorrow for sure."
As I left, a thrill surged through me. This plan could actually work.
---
"It's a lie!" Ireti gasped after I recounted everything, from the hidden records to the revenge scheme forming in my mind.
"It's true," I said, grinning.
"Your revenge plan is seriously... 'revenging,'" she murmured, giving me a skeptical look.
I shrugged. "I'm going through with it."
"And you're going to help me," I added firmly.
"No way!" she exclaimed.

"Madam, there are men here to see you," the gateman's voice crackled through the intercom.
"Send them in," I replied calmly.
Moments later, two officers entered, their uniforms pristine.
Forcing a polite smile, I asked, "How can I assist you, officers?"
"You're under arrest, Mrs. Bailey," one of them said.
Alarm jolted through me. "On what grounds?"
"Perjury, defamation, and falsification of official documents," he replied curtly.
My patience snapped. "What evidence do you have?"
The officer held up a warrant. "We wouldn't have a warrant if we didn't have the proof."
Another officer stepped forward, his expression stern. "We ask for your cooperation, Mrs. Bailey."
