Chapter 13 (Edited)
Yemisi
“Damn it!” Mum screamed, her voice ringing through the house for what felt like the hundredth time.
Kayode, drawn by the shouting, came downstairs and spotted the same news that had sent Mum into a frenzy. Ireti stood nearby, her face a mask of surprise. She clearly hadn’t known about this.
I tried not to roll my eyes. If I started defending myself now, they’d say I was making excuses, as always. I hadn’t assaulted Brian. I’d just... beaten him up. I hadn’t threatened her, I’d merely given a warning. There’s a difference, right?
“I don’t know whether to believe that man when he said the case was handled,” Kayode muttered, his brow furrowed in thought.
“His parents knew,” I replied, trying to keep my voice steady. “He said he’d take care of it. Someone else must be behind this.”
Mum sighed. “Whoever it is, they’re out to get us.”
“Hello? I’m lost here,” Ireti chimed in, her expression confused.
I leaned over and whispered, “Later.” She nodded, but curiosity still gleamed in her eyes.
“Whoever did this is stupid,” Kayode added, shaking his head.
“No,” Ireti cut in, her tone serious. “Whoever did this is targeting Yemisi—and your mum.”
Kayode blinked at her, taken aback by her directness.
“I know more about reporting than you think,” she added with a pointed look.
Her words echoed in my mind, making me pause. Targeting me... and Mum. But why? Who would have such a grudge?
Alessia’s mum. She had threatened Mum not long ago. Could she be the one?
But why spread something so vicious?
“You all should go to bed,” Mum finally said, rubbing her temples. “We’ll deal with this tomorrow.”
We quietly headed to our rooms, but Ireti wasn’t about to let it go.
“So... was it only his nose and lips that bled?” Ireti asked, her eyes gleaming with mischief.
I smirked. “You should’ve seen the rest of him.”
“Good,” she replied with a grin. “He deserved worse.”
“I have a feeling Alessia’s mum is behind this,” I confessed, voicing the thought that had been gnawing at me.
“Why?” Ireti asked, her playful tone fading.
“She threatened Mum a while back,” I explained.
“Now that’s a solid reason,” she replied. Then, almost abruptly, she said, “Hey, there’s this K-drama I’ve been watching. Want to join me?”
I laughed at her sudden shift. “Sure, why not?”

The Next Morning
We were all sitting around the breakfast table when Mum cleared her throat. “I think I know who’s responsible for this.”
“Mwo?” I blurted out, the word slipping out from the Korean show Ireti and I watched the night before.
Mum frowned. “What?”
I cleared my throat awkwardly. “I mean, who?”
“누구?” Ireti chimed in, catching onto the joke.
“Kini rada ti e wa n so? (What nonsense are you two saying?)” Mum asked, her eyebrows furrowing.
Kayode chuckled. “It’s from some Korean movie. They’re just playing around.”
I nodded, but my heart was pounding. “So... who is it?”
Mum’s eyes darkened. “Aderonke Bailey.”
The name sent a shiver down my spine. Alessia’s mum.
“I’m going to call her,” Mum said, picking up her phone and dialing the number. She put the call on speaker so we could all listen.
“Aderonke, what’s the meaning of this?” Mum demanded when the line connected.
“What are you talking about?” Aderonke’s voice was cool, almost amused.
“You know exactly what I mean,” Mum snapped.
“Oh, Fisayo, if you’re talking about that little piece of news... well, I’ve only just begun.”
Mum’s eyes narrowed. “I’ll sue you for defamation.”
Aderonke laughed, her voice dripping with mockery. “Sue me? Please. We both know the right connections and enough money can make any problem disappear.”
“We’re not the same,” Mum shot back. “I earned my wealth. You’re nothing but a low-life bottom feeder.”
There was a pause on the other end of the line, then Aderonke hissed, “You little—”
Mum hung up before she could finish.
The room fell silent, but I could see the proud, relieved smiles spreading across our faces.
“Low-life bottom feeder,” Kayode mumbled under his breath with a smirk.
Mum sighed, her momentary satisfaction fading. “I need to speak with my lawyer.”
As she stood to leave, she looked at me. “Yemisi, you’re on dish duty.”
“Okay, Mum,” I replied.
---
Later that day, I was itching to get out of the house. “Ireti, let’s go for a walk. I’m tired of being cooped up in here.”
“Sure,” she agreed.
“Let me just grab my phone,” I said, running upstairs.
When I rushed back down, I found Ireti standing near the door, her eyes wide. Mum was speaking to two men at the entrance.
“We’re looking for Miss Yemisi Adekunle,” one of the men said in a low, authoritative voice.
Mum straightened, her face a mask of calm. “I’m her mother. What’s this about?”
The second man stepped forward. “We need to speak with her.”
“I’m her mother. You can speak to me,” Mum repeated, her tone firm.
I pushed past her, my heart racing. “I’m Yemisi.”
Both officers turned to me. “Miss Adekunle, you are under arrest for murder and aiding and abetting.”
Mum scoffed. “This is ridiculous!”
“You have the right to a lawyer,” the first officer continued, pulling out handcuffs.
I raised my hands, trying to keep calm. “There’s no need for that. I’m not running.”
Mum stepped forward. “I’m coming with her.”
“And me,” Ireti added fiercely. “I’ll be her witness.”
The officers hesitated but then nodded, motioning for us to follow.
As I stepped outside, the weight of what was happening finally hit me. This wasn’t just about some school fight or bullying. Someone was trying to ruin my life—and I had no idea who.
