Chapter 10 (Edited)
~Yemisi~
I tore through my closet, tossing clothes aside with increasing frustration. Nothing seemed right. Nothing felt like me. My hands skimmed over dresses, skirts, and blouses, but they all felt... off.
"What exactly are you doing?" Kayode's voice broke through the chaos, startling me.
I turned sharply, not having heard him come in. "Ever heard of knocking?" I shot back, giving him a look.
He leaned against the doorframe, unbothered. "I did. You just didn't answer."
"Maybe I was too focused on this," I muttered, gesturing to the mess I'd made of my closet.
"You're stressing over the Pamela situation, aren't you?" he asked, his voice low, knowing.
I nodded without saying a word.
"Well, don't forget to spill the details when you get back," he said, already halfway out the door before I could respond.
As I knelt down to sift through the bottom of the closet, my fingers brushed something familiar. I pulled out a denim jacket. He had given it to me years ago. I stared at it, memories flooding in, both good and bad. I wasn't fond of him lately, and the jacket dredged up things I'd rather forget, but... it caught my eye.
I slipped it on. Surprisingly, it fit perfectly.
"Haven't I grown at all?" I muttered to myself, half in disbelief.
Quickly, I paired it with a white crop top and a short pleated skirt. It worked, and I grabbed my phone, hurrying to meet Ireti.
---
Later
"Hallelujah," I mumbled under my breath when I finally spotted Pamela approaching in the distance. Ireti and I had been waiting for her for almost thirty minutes.
"Pamela, hi," I greeted her as she neared us.
She barely acknowledged me, responding with a dismissive hiss. The girl was always a walking storm.
"Why did you call me here, Ireti?" Pamela asked, her tone sharp, skipping pleasantries.
"Maybe a 'good afternoon' would have been nice," Ireti replied, arching an eyebrow.
"Spare me the lecture," Pamela cut in. "Why am I here?"
I exchanged a glance with Ireti before stepping forward. "We need to talk about Alessia."
Pamela's eyes darkened instantly, but I pressed on. "The investigators... they discovered something strange. Alessia has two different score sheets."
The color drained from Pamela's face as soon as the words left my lips.
"Do you know anything about that?" Ireti asked, her voice steady but probing.
Pamela shook her head, but her eyes said otherwise. "I don't," she replied, her voice tight with obvious tension.
I stepped closer, my voice soft but urgent. "Pamela, please. We need the truth."
She hesitated, visibly torn. "Well..." she began, but before she could finish, a gunshot split the air.
Instinctively, I ducked, my hands flying to cover my ears. The world seemed to freeze for a moment. When I dared to look up, Pamela was on the ground, blood pooling around her.
Ireti's scream echoed in my ears as panic swelled in my chest. My phone buzzed, jolting me out of the shock. I glanced at the screen, and a single message appeared:
"Yemisi, tread carefully where your shadow doesn't belong, or you may find yourself in deeper waters"
