Treble Crochet
Abbreviation:
Chain: Ch
Stitch: St
Yarn over: Yo
Treble crochet: tr
I learned treble crochet as "triple crochet", but most books will say "treble crochet", so I'm calling it that. Either way, they're referring to the last major stitch of crochet. Treble crochet uses the most yarn and is the tallest stitch, and as a result, it is mostly used in decorative contexts. Treble is still a very important stitch to learn, though, because without it you can't make shawls, advanced hats or scarves, or that duster jacket on the first page! So let's get on with it.
1.) Ch 14. Yo twice clockwise (counterclockwise for lefties).
2.) Skip first 4 chains and insert hook on the fifth chain from the hook. You should have five loops on the hook (remember, the chain is counted as 1 loop, not 2).
3.) Yo counterclockwise (clockwise for lefties), pull chain over the hook. You should have 4 loops on the hook.
4.) Yo counterclockwise (clockwise for lefties), pull through the next 2 loops on the hook. You should have 3 loops on the hook.
5.) Yo counterclockwise (clockwise for lefties), pull through the next 2 loops on the hook. You should have 2 loops on the hook.
6.) Yo counterclockwise (clockwise for lefties), pull through the last 2 loops on the hook: 1 tr made.
7.) Repeat steps 1-6 down the line of chains: 10 tr. Ch 4, turn and work tr into first st.
8.) Repeat steps 1-7 until you're comfortable with treble crochet.
