Weak Evidence

Without holding back, the guards threw you out of the prison building and gave you a harsh warning against trying anything like that again, although you didn't hear most of it. The whole time you were a bit shaken by what you thought you had seen in the prison a few seconds before. But, there was no way Yosuke was crying, right? Never before, in all the time you had known Yosuke, had you ever seen him cry. He was always happily smiling and cheering you up when you cried.

Thinking about it, you felt even more angry then you had before. You were completely pissed at Koumei, he was trying to kill Yosuke, he made Yosuke cry! You were going to do something about this. You couldn't just let this happen.

With your mind made on what to do you stormed off to Koumei's room. When you reached the door you calmed yourself on the outside and quietly placed a hand on the it. Then, you pressed your ear against the door hoping to hear if maybe Koumei was inside. The silence you heard only slightly reassured you, Koumei was, after all, a fairly quite person and you doubted he would make a bunch of noise when he was alone in his room.

Slowly and very quietly you opened the door to a small crack, then peaked inside. Koumei wasn't anywhere you could see, so you pushed the door open a little bit more to get a better view. When you could see the whole room and still didn't see Koumei you proceeded to enter. Cautiously you tiptoed across the floor, your eyes darting to every corner and open space they could see in hopes to find what you came for, those records.

When your had a good view of the whole room you immediately went to what you thought was the most likely place they would be, Koumei's desk. Upon glancing over the table, which only had a few papers and scrolls on top, you angrily sighed at how straight he kept his room compared to his actually office.

You spent a little time reminiscing all the organization work you slaved over earlier that day as you looked through each of the scrolls which sat on his clean desk. Unfortunately none of them were the ones you were looking for. Once you had thoroughly searched his desk you began your hunt in the shelves. Still you couldn't find anything in there either. You started to search anything and everything you could think of. By the time you were done you still had not found those scrolls!

Deciding to give up on looking in Koumei's room for the scrolls, you instead headed for the door. However, as your hand reached for the handle, it suddenly began to open. Your heart raced and the only thing you could think to do was jump behind the opening door.

To your relief it was just a maid who entered with some cleaning supplies. She didn't notice you behind the door and started working while facing the opposite direction of you. You came out from behind the door as silently as you could, then you slipped through the door frame. As you were walking through the door you looked back at the maid to make sure she didn't see you. Then, you felt yourself bump into something in front of you. The abrupt stop made you jump as you quickly turned your head to see what you had run into. The only thing you were able to see though was someone's clothed chest however once you looked up you saw the face of Koumei looking down at you.

You shoved yourself out of his chest all the while trying to think of an excuse for entering his room. The dull lighting of the room seemed to cast a shadow across his face and he finally spoke. "I hope you can control yourself from snooping around and breaking into other people's rooms, otherwise I might have to lock you in your own."

His cold tone sent chills down you spine. Even though it was just a warning it terrified you. Hoping to get away, you complied. "Yes, Prince Koumei."

He walked past you without saying anything else and you ran off your own way. If he thought you were going to quit searching for those scrolls, he was sorely wrong. There was no way you were going to give up from just a little warning. In fact, at that moment you felt like even if he locked you in your room you wouldn't give up. Although you needed to be careful about him finding you again. Being stuck in your room would definitely effect how fast you could help Yosuke.

Continuing to look on the bright side of everything, you already knew the scrolls were not in Koumei's room, so you wouldn't have to go in there again. The next place to check was the athenaeum, although it seemed unlikely the scrolls would be found there. After all, would Koumei really put them back where they belonged?

When you arrived at the athenaeum entrance you shoved the doors open and walked right in, which caused you to get immediately kicked out by a guard who was stationed inside the room. You angrily fumed outside the door before deciding you would need some sort of plan to get in. After giving it a bit of thought the only only thing you could really think of was breaking in through a window. You knew it wasn't the greatest plan, but you went outside to accomplish it anyway.

From the outside you looked through all the windows where you estimated the other side of the athenaeum was. It didn't take long before you found a window which framed a room filled with shelves covered in scrolls.

Looking at the nice thin wooden geometrical design of the window, you determined it would be fairly easy to break. Still, before you rammed your body against it you decided to peak inside just to see if you could make out the scrolls you were looking for. Unfortunately, all of the scrolls looked identical.

No longer bothering with being careful, you charged into the fancy lattice of the window making a loud snapping sound from the wood that broke and making another loud thump noise from falling onto the floor. In a hurry, you leapt on your feet and ran in between some shelves. The only hope you had to make it to the front of the room was that the guard would go down a different isle than the one you were in.

After waiting for about two seconds you heard the guard cross the isle right next to the one you were in. Immediately when you heard the noise you ran towards the front of the room where the entrance was. Without having any time to waste looking through all of the scrolls, you did the only thing you could think of on such short notice, you grabbed the scrolls that were stacked on the same shelf the records had been on, then you darted out of the athenaeum.

Without stopping you ran to your room and shut the door behind you. Once in the privacy of the nice quiet room you glanced over at the door to Yosuke's little servant room. Even though Yosuke had only stayed in that room for one night, it reminded you of him. Maybe because you knew if he hadn't been arrested he would be in the room at that very moment. Thinking about him, you felt a little choked up, but you quickly got over it and began to open the scrolls you had been waiting for so very long to read. You doubted that these scrolls were the ones you were looking for, though. It just didn't seem likely that Koumei would put them back where they belonged.

Despite your suspicions, when you saw the contents of the scrolls you were happily surprised at the sight of the records you'd been looking for. But something was different, although you couldn't tell what it was. You just had the feeling that some of what you read was different from what you had scanned over before. On the other hand, you had only scanned over the scrolls that first time so you were probably just remembering wrong.

As you read through the records you could't find anything to really prove Yosuke innocent, but there was no strangely big facts that proved him guilty either. The only things that went against Yosuke were just a few little things that could be connected to not only him, but a lot of other people. It was only when you reached the most recently added information that actual went against Yosuke, which you noticed had been added earlier that day. It was just a few interviews of witnesses who had been present during the assassination. Each witness had described the assassin to look like Yosuke perfectly and it seemed that when they saw Yosuke they all agreed he was the one who had assassinated Taiki Hamano.

At first you wondered when those witnesses would have seen Yosuke to identify him, but the whole morning before his arrest you hadn't been with or seen Yosuke at all, so you had no idea where he could have been. You noted that Koumei had probably called Yosuke to the interview without telling him why he had called him there in the first place and you had no doubt he had bribed or blackmailed the witnesses in some way to get them to change the story. But what surprised you the most was that all these witnesses had never been interviewed before earlier that day. Actually there were no other interviews besides the ones against Yosuke. You couldn't believe that no one would have interviewed the witnesses before earlier that morning, especially when such an important noble was killed.

Then, a very important realization came to you upon researching through all of this. You realized how much power Koumei really had. Being the second prince, he could basically control the fate of Yosuke with or without proof. Him creating evidence against Yosuke was just icing on the cake. It was probably just for safety measures. No matter what you did and no matter how much proof you had, the higher the status and the more money a person has the more that person can get away with things. Koumei, being the second prince, could pretty much do whatever he wanted to a commoner like Yosuke and there was nothing you could do to stop him.

However, even Koumei has someone else to listen to. There was someone even higher than him, the Emperor. Maybe, just maybe, the Emperor would listen to reason and see how obvious it was that Yosuke was innocent. It's not like you wouldn't be able to get an audience with him. Even if you were considered a criminal, being a noble would probably get you somewhere and if that didn't work you also had many connections.

Having your plan in mind you stood up to accomplish it. Just as you headed to the door, Koumei barged in followed by two guards. "Ah Lady (Name), if you would excuse this intrusion. Some scrolls have gone missing and we are looking for the culprit."

Before you could say anything Koumei eyed the scrolls you had taken and picked them up. "(Name), I hope you remember what I said would happen if you continued to snoop around." He turned to the two guards, "stand guard outside this room and be sure not to allow her to leave."
