The Spirit In Stone: Neji x reader part 4
"Okay, now we need three more things," Hinata said as Neji seemed distracted as he helped her carry groceries.
"Neji, you haven't talked the entire trip, and I have been asking you questions about everything," she said as Neji sighed.
"I have been having dreams recently. They aren't dreams, but they are someone's memories that have been stored in rocks. At one point in time, they all must have all been together in the place that got washed away by the flood. I'm trying to find the owners, but they don't exist here; worst of all, the emotions in those memories I am starting to feel. It may interfere with my abilities to fight, and with the war coming fast, I can't afford to mess up," Neji said.
"You never told me that the stone Lee found was bothering you. I thought it was a joke," Hinata said, stopping in her tracks.
"It's not. Whatever this is, I need it to stop before I get stuck there permanently if that can happen. Wars are breaking out, and soon, we will be involved. I don't want you to get hurt due to my inability to fight," Neji said.
"Have you tried throwing the stone away?" She asked.
"It's connected to me possibly by my blood that got on it. Tossing it now will probably not stop the dreams, and I might get stuck the next time I sleep. Someone went through a great deal of trouble to preserve the memories I saw. The man must have loved the girl deeply, but I just don't understand what happened to her or when. She couldn't have been that old when she passed away. I need to find more stones to get more information. Their village doesn't exist, they don't exist. It makes no sense at all." He said.
"Maybe that's what happened to it. It could have been wiped off the map depending on which region the village was in. It could have been too small to even count as a village at the time of its destruction," Hinata explained.
"Whatever happened, I need to know. It could be the key to stopping these dreams. So until then, I have to find the stones and keep having these dreams," he sighed.
"But what if you get stuck in there?" Hinata asked.
"I have to take that chance. It's better than going into the dreams during a battle when I get knocked out. Either way, I activated something, and it made me feel like the dream was real. Everything I touch, smell and see feels real. Even when that girl touches me, it feels real. Someone went through a great deal of trouble to make it that way, and I don't know why. Why have a stone that says, "Come find me?" Why bury it in the woods and make part of a forest there?" He asked as Hinata sighed.
"We can look by the river tomorrow and see if there are any more clues as to what is going on," Hinata said.
Neji didn't know when the line between reality and the dream world he was going into was going to collide, and he was never going to wake up again. That thought alone scared him even though he didn't want to admit it. You didn't exist, the village you lived in didn't exist in any books so he had no idea what to do. Neji sighed as he went home after shopping with his cousin. He sighed softly and looked at the stone he had put together so far. There were only three pieces, but when he looked at them and held them, they felt like more.
He saw some smooth edges that seemed to be on the inside and got out a piece of paper. He put the stone on the paper traced the inside of the stone, and turned it around until it made a hexagon. The stone was in pieces, but it was on purpose. It was weird, but he had a feeling the true center was out there somewhere in the flooded area. It must have led to the girl's grave or was a map of some sort. He just needed to put it together and find out more clues.
He put the stone down and decided to call it an early day to see if he could get anything new out of the stone. He went to bed, and as soon as he started sleeping, he woke up to you on top of him screaming for him.
"You idiot! Don't scare me like that again, you dumb ass!" You screamed as you slapped him hard across the face.
He coughed up water and rolled to his side while you lit the cave you were in with three mushrooms even though you tried making more you couldn't.
"What happened?" Neji asked and saw you aged a bit but not by much only by a year or so.
"What happened?! What happened?! You happened! I told you to stay away from the river! It's flooding season, you idiot but no, you just had to go prove you were oh-so strong and brave! The damn busted, and instead of stopping the water from flooding the crops, I had to save you from dying! I can't do everything you know!" You screamed as you looked at the water that was coming in and flooding the cave.
But due to a cave-in, you couldn't just get out. You were trying to do so many things at once that you used all your Chakra already.
"I'm sorry," Neji said as you hit the wall hard.
"You should be! It's bad enough. I lost my mom a week ago, and I have to pretend that it doesn't affect me, but then you do this stupid stunt and nearly kill yourself in the process! For once could you just listen to me!" You yelled you walked to the more lit area of the cave, and Neji saw blood dripping down your arm and down your face.
Neji remembered when his father died and he hated Hinata's father for it because he was the one who killed the intruder and not his father. You tried to use your jutsu but ended up causing one of the mushrooms to disappear and causing you to hurt yourself more.
"Y/n, stop! You don't have any chakra left!" Neji said as you pushed him away.
"If I don't save those crops, we won't have anything to trade, nothing to eat, and this village will get wiped out!" You yelled.
"What about you, dad?" Neji asked.
"My dad? My dad?! Do you think he is going to do anything?! This was my job because this was my mom's job! She made the damns, she made the walls, she made all of it and I can't even keep you out of trouble!" You said as tears filled your eyes, "my father evacuated the village because the rain came sooner than expected, and nothing was built to protect the village or the crops! We need the river, but when it floods like this, it could wipe us out!"
"Just calm down, I know you are upset and angry, but it won't make anything better!" Neji said.
"You're right! It won't, but when it comes down to why we both ended up dead, at least we will know!" You said as the came started flooding more.
You started to break down, and Neji sat down next to you, giving you space.
"I'm so sorry, I am," Neji said as you couldn't stop crying.
"Who the hell would poison chocolate balls? Why couldn't I just eat the poisoned one by accident," you said. Neji moved over close to you.
"Did anyone find out who did it?" Neji asked.
"No... but chocolate rice balls are my favorite. It was meant for me," you said softly.
"Why didn't you tell me this sooner? I would have helped you," Neji said as you smiled weakly.
"Remember when I got grounded for saving your life last summer? I'm still grounded. Nothing I do is right. My grades are great even though I'm drawing in homework. He hates you because I like you as a friend. He doesn't want me to get older and fall in love with you because your parents are poor. You don't have the skills I have or the skills other ninjas have. You are so far behind Kirs. He doesn't think you are worth anything, but I do. My mom thought you were worth something too. With how things are going, I won't live long enough to have what she had or be who this village needs me to be, not without you. You were the only person besides Richard to give me the boost I needed to make a single shadow clone. Without you two, I'm going to push myself too hard one day and end up dead, and no one cares because it is my job to die for my village no matter what age that is," you explained as thunder shook the ground.
"People do care if you live or die. Many people in this village might not care, but someone might come along in the future who sees what you are worth despite any flaws you have that you hate. Everyone has flaws, I may not be the strongest, but that doesn't mean I am not good at other things. It takes a strong person to admit that they are wrong or when they need outside help. I know my limit and I push it. You see your limit and push it but you think you have to die for anyone to be proud of you or that no one cares. You have two people who will miss you and my parents too, that's more people than some other people have. No matter what you will always have me around even when I'm gone or when Richard is gone we will be here in your heart and your head," Neji smiled.
"Thanks, Kris, I'm glad I got stuck here with you. Too bad we are going to die in here. This is a low cave by the river. It caved in when the land started sliding down over this cave. I couldn't do anything about it because my Chakra is so low and it still is," you explained.
"Mine is too but maybe we can try to remove some rocks to try to get out of here," Neji suggested.
"I can't tell which rocks are low-bearing or not. Plus the water is coming in. You never learned how to swim and if we are underwater there is no telling if we will make it to the surface in complete darkness. Making these mushrooms is using the last bit I have. If we move them we will have no light at all," you explained.
"Well we can't just sit here," Neji said as he slid into the water and went to the closed cave entrance.
"Hey! Kris! Y/n! It's Richard are you guys alright in there?!" Richard yelled making you and Neji shocked.
"Richard go back to the village it isn't safe here! The water is rising and I don't have the Chakra to get us out of here!" You yelled.
"Go back? I managed to leave before your father locked everyone down in the bunker! I'm not leaving without you!" Richard yelled as he quickly used his Chakra to create a wall to prevent any more water from spilling into the cave.
He saw the rocks and saw the top and decided to peel the roof back to them you and Neji get out.
"Richard whatever it is you are doing stop the cave is going to collapse!" You yelled as he quickly took off the top and you grabbed Neji and pulled him back on the little bit of dry land you two were on.
"Come on guys we need to hurry trees are falling and are rolling! I never heard of a storm so bad before. What do you think triggered it?" Richard asked as he helped you and Neji out of the cave.
"I don't know but is the village and the crops okay?" You asked.
"Yeah, I guess I don't know I have been looking everywhere for you two. I didn't see you in the emergency village sanctuary so I have been looking everywhere. I remembered Kirs had some fishing nets out here and had been following the river when I saw a light from here. Look the bridge I made isn't going to last long, especially with the rising water we need to leave now," Richard said as he extended the bridge and all of them ran across it right before the water quickly started devouring it.
Richard was a bigger build and seemed a lot stronger than Kris was he was even a bit taller.
"Thanks, Richard for looking for us," you said as lightning struck a tree and you quickly grabbed both of them and covered them as they hit the river and started heading downstream.
"We need to temporarily make the water go somewhere else. Me and Kris are going to be having to do it the hard way but you are going to be having to do the hardest part and divert the water," you explained.
"Y/n I hate to break it to you but my walls just got destroyed we can't keep building we just need to reinforce the village. There are trees down everywhere I'm sure we can use those. The walls you built aren't going to last long if they keep getting directly hit. We need to go down and see what wall is being hit the hardest and find a way to slowly move the water away and reinforce. I can make the walls since you two don't have enough Chakra for anything right now. Just get the trees and move them, remember to use the water to help you. The water may be our enemy but it is also our greatest ally right now," he explained.
"That's not a bad plan, we need to go before one of those walls breaks, if it starts breaking that's it," Neji said.
You three ran through the rain, the high winds, the thunder, and the lightning to make it to the village where the area around the crop field was surrounded by low rushing water and so was the village. Trees were up against the walls and you looked at them horrified as the water was just rushing at the structures.
"There goes that plan, what do we do now?" Richard asked as Neji was trying to think of something.
"I got an idea," you said as you did some hand signs.
"No! Y/n you used too much Chakra!" Richard yelled as tree roots were growing out into the shape of a tube and you made it massive enough to hold the water and move it and divert it deep into the woods.
You fell to your knees out of breath and your eyes were bleeding and so were your hands.
"Y/n, look at me. Do you know who I am? Can you see and hear me?" Neji asked as lightning struck a tree behind you and you used more Chakra to get them out of the way while the tree hit you.
Neji looked horrified as Richard was trying to figure out how to help you.
"Shit! Damn it Y/n why do you always think we are more important than you?!" Richard yelled as he managed to use his Chakra to get the tree off of you.
"Oh no..." Richard said softly making Neji get up and go to you.
"Y/n, hey! Y/n!" Neji said as you lay on the ground unconscious.
"I think that tree killed her," Richard said as he felt for a pulse but there wasn't one.
"No! Y/n listen to me, you need to get up! Come on! Please, please, don't die like this please!" Neji begged as he started doing CPR.
You coughed after a little bit and Richard looked at you shocked.
"Come on let's get you to see the doctor, you may have broken a few bones," Richard said as he picked you up and Neji smiled a bit.
Neji woke up feeling a bit wet. He touched his hair and to his shock it was a bit damp but he didn't take a shower last night. He didn't smell bad but it could have been sweat. These dreams were becoming more and more real. This was going to be a problem.
