Ch1: A New Target
(Y/N POV - Tokyo Settlement - 2018 a.t.b)
Come on, just one more and I will win.
If I loss, then the funds I had saved up for the when it comes time to rebel will be drained by quite a bit.
But if I win, well the pay off will be well worth the risk. That and I get quite the the payday added to the funds
I just needed to hope that my target had a lower hand then I did or he didn't fold.
Honestly I was hoping that this game would end soon, I was never a poker person.
I was more of an old maid kind of person, then again that was the only game I could beat Lelouch at a majority of the time.
That was also the only reason why I have lasted as long anyway, always putting on a mask that is always the opposite of what you were thinking. If you have a bad hand, make it so your opponents think that you have a good hand. If you have a good hand, make sure that you opponent thinks that you have a bad hand. And always do this after a few rounds as to throw of their rhythm.
Developed this little trick to work against Lelouch, he figured it out after a three rounds. Still it was enough for him to admit that it was a good trick, so that was enough for me.
It was down to me and my target, an old margrave who was actually a much more pleasant man then I expected.
He was getting rid of some of his collection and after getting rid of most of it, figured he could give away some of what he figured was the more worthless items while earning some more money on the side.
Typical greed, but at least he was far more pleasant then the other nobles we played against. At least he kept his cool while losing his money. That and he seemed to have been enjoying this game all along the way.
Although if he just knew the true value of what was he considered worthless, because it was probably worth more then most noble's fortunes. Well at least in Area 11 anyway.
After discarding our cards I noticed my cards and noticed that it was an alright hand.
I could fold...but I wouldn't have time to change out of this disguise and pick up the cookies for Nunnally and not be at home on time and I couldn't risk that.
A disappointed Nunnally is not something to anyone should ever take lightly.
"I raise and I am going to go all in." I said, shoving all my chips into the center of the table. Surprising the old man and all the spectaters around us.
"Are you sure?" The old margrave asked he asked as did the same thing. "Here I thought this was going to be longer."
"So did I, but I have an appoinment coming up soon and would like to finish this game. As enjoyable as this was, I need to get this done otherwise I will be in some hot water." I said, getting a knowing nod from the margrave and a teasing smile.
Please don't be thinking what I think he is thinking right now.
Pushing down the thoughts, we placed down our hands for the showdow.
I had managed to the scrounge out three 2s, a 5, and a jack.
An alright hand, but there was a good possibility the old man would have a better hand.
Looking at his hand, I was wrong
A pair of aces, a jack, and a pair of kings.
...That was close, too close for comfort. I had won, but just by having a slightly better hand.
Yet that is life I suppose, sometimes you win sometimes you don't.
"Well that was a good game, albeit short. Hopefully the next time I come here we can play again, it is a refreshing change of pace to be able to play against a proper young noble and not one of those upstart brats." The old man said with a small smile. "At least you can take a victory without lording it over."
"Or whine about their defeat like a child throwing a tantrum." I said, getting the man to nod.
"Now then as per are agreement, Jones get the cart please." The margrave ordered his servent.
"Of course sir, also my name is actually Joh-" "Don't care, you're new and if you can make it to your first paycheck then I will remember." The servent tried to say, but was cut off by the old man.
He sighed out before doing what the man asked.
"It is hard to find a good servant now a days, used to rely on myself most of the time. But getting up in my years has had me to rely on more servants. Most of them pisspoor in work ethic or quality. Tell me do you have the same problem?" The old man asked.
"Not at all, there is one in particular that I could actually count on for everything." I said half truthfully.
I technically don't have any servents at all and the closest person that could be considered that can kick my ass seven ways to Sunday if provoked.
Then again Sayoko was a bloody kunoichi, and the one that I can rely on the most. Honestly if she hadn't been helping me I am sure that I would have never have made it this far if I have with preparing for a rebellion.
"I see, would you mind giving me a trade then?" The old man asked when gesturing the servant getting the cart.
"Not at all, she is too important to me." I said, getting a knowing grin from the margrave.
"Oh it's a woman then. I have the perfect thing for her." The old man said with a grin before grabbing an old box off the cart.
Wait is that-
"If my guess is correct then this woman in an Eleven, most you kids seem to prefer to have them for servants nowadays, My wife hates this little beaut calling it nothing more then cheap jewelery. But I believe this would look do better for your servant. So consider this a gift." The margrave said while opening the box, revealing the item I was looking for!
"Are you sure this, I could pay for it." I said staying in character, but internally happy about the circumstances. Still it was better to at least to not look a gift horse in the mouth.
"Nonsense, take it if you will that thing is practically worthless compared to the rest of collection, Besides it would look much better on your woman then in a display case." The man said with a grin.
I would have bristled at him calling this item worthless...but me thoughts were elsewhere.
"She's just my maid, nothing else." I said, my face a little red just getting the margrave to laugh.
"Sure she is." The old man said with a grin. "Now then how about we finalize our deal then."
"Agreed." I said, trying to regain my composure.
I can think about how beautiful Sayoko is later...now though the mission takes priority.
(20 minutes later)
"Hope to play against you again sometime." The old margrave called out as I exited the hotel room.
"To you as well." I said politely before walking away, my prize at hand.
After transferring my new earnings into an offshore account, the old man had offered some more of his collection.
As I did see a few things that I liked, so we went back to the casino's hotel and to his room to agree upon a drop spot for the items in question in 2 days. Of course I would have to leave during break at school, but honestly the hanger could use some sprucing up.
Anyway better hurry if I wanted to picked up those cookies for Nunnally and I know just the place.
(10 minutes later)
"Thank you, come again." The store clerk said as I walk away with a blue and white box of cookies underneath my arm.
After ditching my disguise it had been easy enough to look up a sweet shop nearby.
It had been harder to find one near a train station that runs close to Ashford Academy.
Still I managed to find one and these cookies from the Homeland would be just the thing for my little sister.
Plus if everything goes well according to the schedule then I should be home in about 25 minutes.
After that it was realitivly simple of getting my I.D. card scanned and borded the train.
Everything was going perfectly, a little too perfectly for my tastes. In my experiences there was never such a thing.
Then again I could be paranoid considering I was carrying precious cargo and cookies for Nunnally. Bad things could happen at any moment and if anything happened to any of these...well I can't tell what is worse.
A possible fallback or an upset Nunnally.
Most likely the former.
"Everyone stand up and have your I.D. Cards ready for inspection!"
And there it is.
Everyone stood up as two Britannia n soldiers with their weapons walked into the train car, unnerving most the passengers.
Honestly I wasn't too worried about them, it was who they were with that had me worried.
Cause stepping into the cart behind them was a face I hadn't seen in over five years.
General Bartley Asprius, Clovis's major domo and one of the Royal Family's biggest supporters in Area 11.
Some serious shit must be going on if he is here, and personal too if the recent bruise on his cheek is of any indication.
I saw what he did to the J.L.F that gave him is scar and it wasn't pretty to see the remains.
"Who do you think you are demanding me to follow your orders like some lowly commoner." A passenger said standing up from his seat walking up to general with an arrogant snarl.
"Sir should I-" "Private Kowalski I will handle it, just scan his card." Bartley sighed as he gestured for the man to passenger to walk forwards. "Now tell me, who are you?"
"Who I am, I am the son of the Duke LaCroix! I don't know who you are, but when my farther hears about this you can kiss your uniform goodbye." The arrogant pounce declared, getting myself to shake my head.
Truly a no finer example of the worst qualities of the nobles in the Britannian Empire.
And maybe soon, the latest victim of its philosophy if the moron didn't learn anything.
"Private Kowalski, is it true?" Bartley said.
"It's all right here sir." The private said, handing the pounce his card back.
"I see." The general said calmly before facing the pounce. "So you do not recognize me?"
"Should I recognize some lowly military peon!" The pounce said, shouting and spitting in Bartley's face.
Well this moron just fucked up.
Eight other soliders entered from the other side of the car with their arms drawn and causing the pounce to turn pale as Bartley calmly wiped the spot of of his face.
"Detain this spoiled brat for intervering in the official investigation of the Britannian Royal Family and inform his farther to pick him afterwards. Some time in a cell should teach him a lesson." Bartley said, as two soliders detained the pounce, as he began to struggle against them.
"You can't do this to me I-" "The son of a Duke I know. But I am a General of the Britannia Empire. So your status doesn't mean anything to me. Now take him away." Bartley interjected as the soliders dragged the pounce away, kicking and screaming all the way.
Such a shame to, the gene pool would have benfitted from his removal.
Never really held much love for spoiled brats, most of my siblings included.
Thought there are a few decent ones among the bunch, it is a shame one of my favorites has turned into an egomaniac peacock, strutting his feathers, uncaring about almost anything else but himself and treading on anyone he sees as inferior.
Which would explain why Bartley was here, the JLF must've had their first real success against Clovis in years.
"Ladies and gentlemen we have on board an Eleven terrorist on board and we know who you are, your compatriots gave you up and we have combed the rest of the train for you. Give up now, you are surrounded and there is nowhere to go." Bartley ordered calmly as most of the passengers proceed to glare at the few Japanese passengers on board as soliders began to scan I.D. cards and search through bags and pockets.
I was mostly alright, though I hoped no one searched my sleeves.
I would be rather hard to explain why a Britannian school boy had Japanese weapons on his person.
Bartley was in complete control on the situation, it would explain why he was so calm about this.
The JLF must've messed up and everyone on their success must've been captured except for a straggler.
It took a few seconds of looking until I saw the straggler himself.
Once again someone that I have not seen in 5 years, and I was exasperated.
You have got to be kidding me, I know that the JLF was getting desperate and all. But making Private Yoneda a spy?
That man was basically a thug in a military uniform. Probably still is by how tense and angry he was looking.
No surprise he was the one who punched Bartley in the face. Though probably while wearing a mask.
Cause their is no way he could just hide his identity with a pair of flimsy glasses.
This could go either way.
Either one of these soliders get a little trigger happy and start to shoot up a train.
Which was possible, there was always such an idiot in situation like this.
Or the most likely scenario, Yoneda snaps and does something drastic.
"Let me off this train or I blow his brains out!" Yoneda shouted as he hid behind me, pressing a loaded pistol against the back of my head.
Like that.
Soon the soliders in the train turned their attention towards the two of us and trained their guns on us.
Knowing that a Britannian schoolboy was being held hostage was probably the only thing keeping them from pumping the both of us full of lead.
Yoneda, you're a disgrace.
Thinking that you could take a child hostage in order to escape or more likely a meat shield to buy yourself a few more seconds of life.
But you made one mistake.
You left yourself wide open.
Looking to one of the soliders nearly Bartley, Kowalski I believe I made a come hither gesture. Getting him to look confused before nodding and taking a step forward.
"Stay back or I blow his brains out!" Yoneda shouted out, but Kolwalski continued to approach.
"Private Kowalski what do you think your doing!" Bartley silently growled out as the private took another step.
After one more step, Yoneda removed the pistol from the back of my head and pointed it at the private.
Idiot.
"I said stay back!" Yoneda shouted, before I headbutted him.
While reeling from the headbutt, I punched him in the kidney. Getting him to kneel over before slamming my bookbag into his face.
Yoneda fell to the ground dropping his pistol. He tried to make a grab on it, put Bartley shot him in the hand.
He screamed out in pain as he clutched the bloody hole in his hand before a majority of the soliders went to detain him while the rest went to calm down the frenzied passengers on the train car.
While this was going on I noticed something had fallen onto the floor and at my feet.
A simple black thumb drive with a crimson dot on the end.
Very much like the type used by JLF spies for their entire operation. There was two per cell, one that is used for information gathering and another that is used to launch a rather nasty surprise in case anyone was caught.
Only difference was that one had a lighter shade for on the end. A very minute difference, but a critical one not to mess up.
If JLF hadn't really changed over the years, then there was only one of both and they were entrusted to one person in the cell.
I am guess Yoneda was their last resort then.
While they were still struggling to contain him, I pocketed the thumb drive while no one was looking.
Who knows the vertable treasure trove that is hidden on here.
"Detain him and don't be afraid to rough him up a little. But keep him alive, I wish to interigate him personally." Bartley said as at least four soliders dragged Yoneda away, cursing the Britannian s out and saying he will never break.
Which knowing him will be true, because as much as he was an asshole he was also extremely loyal to the JLF.
They might as well try to get blood from a stone then.
"Private Kolwalski, good thinking on your part. Though it was reckless, the terrorist has been caught. However next time you try something like that without my orders again there will be repercussions for your actions." Bartley said gruffly getting the private to nod.
"Of course sir." Kowalski said, getting the general to nod before turning to me.
"You have done the Holy Britannian Empire proud today with your help catching the terrorist, though I am surprised with how you handled being taken hostage at gun point. No schoolboy I know would have acted that calm." Bartley said inquisitivly as he held out my hand out for my I.D. card.
"Considering that I lived in Area 14 during the first wave of the campaign, this was not really all that much of an issue." I said calmly, getting Bartley to wince.
The conquest of Papua New Guinea was a sore spot in their conquests. Facing brutal resistance even worse then in Area 13 and even a few accounts of cannibalism during the first month of their campaign. It was especially brutally for Britannian citizens already living there, with countless reports of them being dragged out of their homes and lynched.
I honestly was their for the first month, took the wrong plane and kept my head low. Pretending to be a Japanese refugee I was mostly safe before stowing away on a plane back to Japan when reinforcements came.
"It all checks out sir." On of the soliders said, handing me back my card and Bartley his datapad.
"Y/N Sorel...I see then. Glad you got out of that mess alright. Now tell me, have you considered a career in the military?" Bartley asked, getting me to shake my head.
"Not really." I said, getting Bartley to hand me a card.
"Well if you do or any government job in Area 11 after graduation hand them this card and I will make sure things run smoothly for yiu. Least I can do for making sure this operation didn't end in disaster." Bartley said, getting me to nod before turning around. "Men scan the rest of these passenger's I.D. cards. I do not want anymore surprises. I am going to contact P.R. to handle this mess. Privates Kowalski, Ramerez. The two of you with me."
After barking out those orders, he walked out of the train car with the two soliders in question.
The rest stayed behind and followed Bartley's orders and ignored me.
I tried for the rest of the ride to make myself not noticable just look out of the window.
Lelouch was going to give me an earful when he hears about this.
(5 minutes later)
"Y/N, why is it that only you could be taken hostage on a train ride home." Lelouch sighed out from the other end of my phone.
Huh, I did not expect that kind of response.
"Honestly I expected you to be more upset." I said as I got of the train car and proceeded to slip through the crowd of people approaching and the reporters swarming the train. "And I thought this would have been longer to spread through the news."
"The story of an Eleven terrorist taking a hostage aboard a train, especially a student spreads like wildfire. And I am upset, though more relieved that you are alright. Thankfully no clear photos were taken of you and they confirmed to not be releasing names to the public. But expect word to spread around the school tomorrow." Lelouch said calmly.
"I already have, and I already expect them to be blown out of the water before breakfast tomorrow." I said half jokingly half seriously.
The power of the school's rumor mill never ceases to amaze me.
"Of course, though their is one question that I need to ask Y/N. Did you know him and what are the chances-" "They are absolutely zero. If he knew then he would've been just another face in the long line of people who would kill us do to father. And I primary knew of him by reputation and the fact he killed a target I was supposed to bring back alive out of anger." I interjected, getting my younger brother to sigh.
"Well then, do you know what at least caused this incident? Sources said they tried and failed to steal information from Clovis's office. But from Bartley's presence they clearly succeeded. But if they had attempted that, they would have been killed before entering the building due to rumor's of his security's force actions alone. So my best guess is that you are going to try and find out." Lelouch sighed out.
"And what makes you think that Lulu?" I said to Lelouch.
"Stop calling me that. And I know enough about you to correctly guess what you are going to do." He said, getting me to tense. "Y/N why don't you come for me to help instead of leaving me in the dark?"
"We have been over this a million times Lelouch, you are not old enough and I want for you to at least have a normal school life with Nunnally. Besides wouldn't you do the same thing to me if you were in my position?" I asked him.
The silence on the other end of the line was telling.
"... This discussion isn't over Y/N." Lelouch said cooly.
"It never is." I sighed out.
"Anyway you better be home soon, otherwise Nunnally will be upset." Lelouch said.
"I know and I will be there soon." I said honestly.
"Good, because you are going to have to spend the rest of the afternoon with her." Lelouch said, getting me to pale.
Oh no.
"Lelouch don't you dare!" I snapped at him, getting me to practically feel his smugness from the other end of the phone.
"It was only necessary to inform her of this, after all we nearly lost you once. Wouldn't want you that to happen again now should we so it was only right to inform Nunnally." Lelouch said, his voice a perfect mix of genuine concern and cunning.
Something that normally should be impossible.
"Lelouch I am going to get you for this." I silently growled out.
"See you soon Y/N." He said before ending the call, getting me to sigh.
Well, there goes my free time this afternoon. This must be his payback for calling him Lulu and worrying him.
I'll get him back for this tomorrow.
Still for now it was for the best to order a ride back to Ashford, I have had enough drama for today.
Speaking of which, I need to check on this thumb drive back in the hanger. No possiblity of being traced back there.
If an entire JLF spy cell was being pursued by General Bartley it must contain quite the treasure.
Now what to do with it is the biggest mystery. Though it all depends on what is on here.
But first things first, I need to make sure Nunnally won't be too upset.
It would detremential if she was upset after all. Behind her kindness, there was a strength of will that I could say could be quite terrifying if used correctly.
And there was no way in hell I was going to suffer from that of I can!
