---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After a few minutes of mutual groping and making out, I came to the conclusion that Victoria Shelby was not loyal.

It might be a bit ironical since I was in the bar trying to make my boyfriend's wife sleep with me. My intentions however were much different, although equally fucked.

"What's your name?"

Victoria's voice was soft, barely audible over the din still sounding from the raucous bar outside. Her lips were slightly parted as she gazed hungrily at mine.

"Mason," I replied, pushing her against the wall and placing my palms flat on the wall on either side of her face. My alias from my last assignment fell naturally from my tongue.

Even in the semi darkness of the hallway, I could see her heavily hooded eyes. Her sharp, chiselled bone structure that was accentuated by the low light. Her full, vampy lips and long black curly hair that cascaded down her face, striking beautiful harmony with her chocolate brown skin.

As much as it stung me, there was no denying that Grayson's wife was beautiful.

I leaned closer and kissed her fervently, tracing my tongue along her bottom lip and drawing it out so she moaned softly. She sighed breathily. Then she leaned back and placed her hand on my shirt collar, "Come with me."

She led me along the hallway and into a dark room. The sole light in the room was the moon reflecting through the solitory high window. It seemed to be some sort of a store room located behind the bar.

The moment we were inside, she pushed me against the wall, bringing her hour glass body close to mine and gyrating her hips against my growing erection. "Mm...looks like you're all ready."

She giggled drunkenly, the stench of the alcohol on her breath seemed to increase. I gave her a small smirk, knotting my fingers in her hair and pulling her head back to expose her neck. I sucked softly, hungrily. Trailing my tongue along her jaw, her ear, her neck till she was squirming. When I leaned back, she was panting breathlessly, her dark eyes wild with hunger. She bit her lip seductively, "Would you-?"

She stopped talking as there was a knock on the door. I gazed at the shut door, my mind wandering. It could be a staff member. She sighed softly and shook her head. We stood still for a while, hoping for whoever it was to leave. However, the knock was repeated again. Urgently.

I raised an eyebrow at her and started making my way towards the door, my senses tingling. I was startled however as my phone started ringing. I cursed under my breath, quickly fishing it out of my pocket and silencing it. My heart jolted painfully at the contact name.

Gray 🖤

I raked a hand through my hair and gazed at Victoria apologetically, "I have to get this."

She stared at me expressionlessly as I went and stood near a corner. The knocking was repeated as she finally rolled her eyes and made her way to the door. I turned away and faced towards the wall as I spoke into the phone, breathlessly, "Hey love."

"Xavier," Grayson spoke, his voice soft. My stomach knotted pleasurably at the familiar, sexy sound. "Hey...were you asleep? Just wanted to hear your voice."

My heart dropped in my throat. I was here, sleeping with his wife. Even if it was for him, I didn't think he would approve.

"No, just-"

I cursed under my breath as Victoria opened the door with a loud clang. I could hear Gray sucking in a deep breath as he spoke, "Where are y-"

My heart leaped into my throat, my blood running cold as the loud bang of the gunshot echoed through the tiny room.

"Xav-"

I hung up the phone and got to my knees immediately, lying low as my eyes finally fell on the crumpled body of Victoria Shelby. Adrenaline and terror coursing through my veins. I waited for a while till the heavy, running footsteps receded. My heart thundered in my chest. I was unarmed, I couldn't take any chances. When I was sure that the attacker was far, I sprang to my feet and ran over to the door, gazing at the dark hallways which was devoid of any sign of life. Whoever it was had already made their getaway.

I dropped to my knees and used my phone flashlight on her. My blood ran cold at the sight of her pale face. Her eyes were wide, glassy. She was in shock. Blood was pouring over her bosom onto the ground around her, its stench hyperactivating my senses as I sprung into action.

I called the ambulance, trying to keep my voice from trembling as I gave them the location. Jack's Bar.

I wish I had had the opportunity to find the attacker, but my training had automatically taught me to get to safety myself. Whoever the attacker was had only shot once which meant two things. Either their job was done, or that it wasn't. That they had missed their target.

Me.

It didn't make sense that Victoria Shelby would be the target of any gun wielders. I on the other hand, was used to people taking shots at me.

Way too literally.

The moment I hung up the phone after giving the ambulance the instructions, my phone rang again. I cradled the phone between my shoulder and ear as I tried to look for anything that might help to stop the blood flow.

"XAVIER? WHAT THE F-?"

"Jack's Bar. I've called the ambulance. I'm okay. It wasn't me. I'll call you when I reach the hospital. I love you." I hung up before he had the chance to say anything.

I found some plastic bags that were used to cover unused cutlery pulled it down from the shed. It wasn't sterilised and I'd be running the risk of Victoria catching an infection. However, she was dangerously pale and her chest was scarcely moving. The inky liquid bathing her torso in a deadly way. I could worry about septicemia after I was assured that she wouldn't die from haemorrhage.

I leaned over her and tried to gauge the wound shut. Limiting blood flow had to be my primary objective. There wasn't anything much I could do. A wound of this nature to the chest meant only plastic could prevent the lungs from collapsing. Unless she succumbed to the extensive bleeding first. My hands were cold, my prior experience calming me somewhat even as my fingers trembled slightly. I cursed under my breath, trying to compress the wound. I had no way of knowing how deep the gunshot was, whether it had already penetrated her heart.

I sighed in relief when I heard multiple footsteps running down the hallway. Paramedics stepped into the room, quickly putting Victoria onto a stretcher. One of them approached me, her eyes wide. "Are you-"

"No," I bit my lip as I gazed nervously at the awfully still Victoria being taken away. "I just-"

"Come," she said simply and started leasing me away. We sprinted through the hallway and our on the dark road.

We got into the ambulance. I looked on nervously as they fixed her with an oxygen mask. They set up a tourniquet as I gazed, entranced. It took me a while to understand which hospital we were going to and I quickly texted Gray.

City Line, Westend.

I put the phone back in my pocket. My heart was thundering in my chest, my brain haywire. I knew I didn't have a shortage of enemies, but such an attack meant my cover was blown. Or was it possible that the attack had actually been meant for Victoria?

I stared at her. My plan had been fucked over in the most unimaginable way possible.

We reached the hospital and someone approached to make sure I wasn't injured. A few minutes later, a gruff police inspector reached me as I stood, trying to catch my breath.

"Name?"

"Xavier."

"Full name?"

I gulped, "I don't-"

"Don't give me that nonsense young man," He shook his head, "Your government ID. I want the name on that."

I gazed at him and grit my teeth as I uttered the name I had long tried to forget, "Xavier Froye Easton."

The man scribbled onto a notepad as he continued, "What happened?"

"Someone arrived. I was facing the other way-"

"How convenient," The man scoffed, crossing his arms in front of his broad chest and glaring at me from under his thick, bushy eyebrows. "You didn't see the attacker?"

"No," I said, shaking my head, indignant at his disbelief. "I got a call from my boyfriend and I attended-"

His eyes flashed and he shook his head as my spine tingled with anger. "So you're...gay."

I grit my teeth, answering coldly, "Is that part of your interrogation?"

He shrugged, "If you already have a dick to suck then why are you with this woman?"

Anger flared up inside me. "I am not liable to answer you that."

He laughed. My skin crawled at the sound. "I am just trying to understand why a woman-" he shook his head, "A regular woman is shot in a busy bar while she is humping a faggot."

I clenched my fists. I was used to snide remarks like his. But I wasn't going to entertain his vile thoughts.

"Why are you so interested in my sex life officer?" I slurred, smirking at him. I lowered my voice huskily and smiled seductively, "Would you like a piece of me?"

He recoiled. Stunned at my reaction. He shook his head, "Disgusting."

He went away and a much more tolerable, female police officer approached me instead. I told her everything that had happened and sat on one of the metal benches. It was late at night and most of the hospital was devoid of any visitors. I waited anxious with no news for little more than an hour. Finally, Grayson walked into the hospital. The sight of him almost made me forget my predicament.

I sprang to my feet and rushed at him, throwing my arms around him. He held me close and I could feel his erratic heart in his chest. For a second, I let the hospital dissolve. I let myself melt into his warm, loving, assuring embrace.

"You scared the shit out of me baby," he spoke hoarsely. I leaned back and he kissed the top of my head, his startling green eyes wide. "What happened?"

I took a deep breath and opened my mouth to speak. Before I could though, his phone rang and he disentangled himself from me. "Are you injured?"

He studied me and I shook my head assuringly. He finally picked up the call and spoke into the phone. His expression turned from curiosity to utter shock. When he turned to me his haunted expression scared me. His eyes devoid of its usual ethereal sparkle. His face pale.

"Xavier...you were with...Victoria?"

He spoke in a whisper, his words devoid of all emotions. My heart plumetted to my chest.

He gazed at me in disbelief, "They said they found her phone and purse from the site. Someone had shot her. She was with some guy called Xavier Froye Easton. And...found my name on her legal record."

My blood turned into ice. My ears ringing. I had never meant for him to find out. He stared at me, "Xavier?"

My world was spinning. I struggled to breath, all air rushing out of my lungs. Why was it so difficult to tell him the truth?

"I...I was with he-" I gulped, trying hard to continue, "-her and...someone shot her. I...didn't see who. They...ran away."

He was quiet, his mouth slightly open. "Why were you with her?"

His voice was toneless. Utterly bewildered. "Xav?"

"I...I hoped I could..." I shuddered, I couldn't look at him, "I hoped I could get her to...infidelity." I know I wasn't making sense grammatically, but the lack of air made it difficult to string words together.

"Xavier, look at me."

I gulped, my nerves numb with fear. I couldn't look at him. I knew what I would see if I did. And I was terrified.

"Xavier."

His voice was hard. Commanding. Finally, I took a ragged breath and looked into his haunted eyes. "Did you...you were cheating on me?"

"N-nothing happened." I whispered, so low that I wasn't sure if he'd heard me.

"Because... because she was shot." He spoke, his voice barely audible, "You were going to sleep with her."

"I just...just needed something to blackmail-"

"And the first thing you thought of was cheating on me?"

I gazed at him, my heart ripping at the broken expression on his face. He didn't seem angry. Just spiritless.

"That's not what it is Gray." I spoke, my voice a little stronger as I told him the truth, "I was just going to have sex with her and-"

"Are you listening to yourself right now Xavier?" His voice sounded scandalised, his eyes dark.

I took deep breaths, my chest constricting. "It didn't mean anything Gray. You...you know that."

I gazed at him, my heart shattering when I saw his eyes. Glistening. He blinked and their brightness reduced.

"I can't ..look at you right now Xavier." He started to walk past me. Like an idiot I grabbed onto his sleeve.

"Gray-"

He wrenched his arm away from me, glaring at me with anger that deflated me. He had never looked at me with such hatred. I took a shuddering breath. "Gray-"

"Don't. Xavier. Please. Just get the fuck out of my sight."

His words were laced with venomous anger as he walked away. I staref at him, a dagger stuck in my throat, my heart spiralling into a deep abyss.
