[MT] Headcanon: Life With Mortimer.

Friends:

Alex introduced the two of you when he and the other mutants got back from Vietnam. When you had first met Mortimer, you were at the mansion waiting to greet Alex, who was your best friend, after they got the plane back from the war. Mortimer was the last off the plane and he seemed out of place, compared to the others, as he had his shoulders hunched and he looked like he was on edge, gripping the strap of his bag tightly. Alex called his name and waved him over and Mortimer quickly made his way over to Alex but slowed down halfway when he caught sight of you. He seemed nervous when he finally made it over, but you smiled at him and welcomed him home, offering your hand out to him, just to ease his mind.

After that, the two of you would spend more time together, sometimes Alex would join, but more times than not, you asked Mortimer if he wanted to hang out with just you. He would always agree, making sure to stay close to your side if you were ever out in a very public place—sometimes even if it was only slightly populated with other people.

He was always polite to you, and when he got more comfortable around you, you would be able to see his more troublesome side. He would play pranks on Alex, who was none the wiser, despite it happening quite frequently at the mansion, and he would always be cracking jokes to make you laugh—which wasn't that difficult as he did have a good sense of humour. He would also stick his tongue out at the children who stared at him for a little too long, revealing his childish side.

After Vietnam, you knew that a lot of the mutants were having trouble finding jobs, so you called one of your friends to try and get them to offer Mortimer a job at a small restaurant. Since he got the job, he never stopped thanking you for it, as it allowed him to get a very small apartment above the restaurant, which was another added bonus. He liked having you around, despite not having much in his apartment, to try and get you to try some of the new food he was cooking, as he liked to have your opinion on it.

Dating:

When the two of you started dating, Mortimer was always around your house. It was close to the restaurant, which was also good for when he stayed over and needed to get to work the next day. He liked to show off his cooking skills now that he was able to use a better-equipped kitchen compared to the one at his apartment, and he liked the fact that you had a garage because he liked spray painting one of the empty walls, cleaning it off when he wanted to change it, and because he's also a mechanic, he liked working on your car. Which also meant that you had to fix and clean his goggles a lot as he always seems to find a way to damage them.

When you asked him to move in with you—because it doesn't have to be the guy who asks, and you knew Mortimer was barely living in the small apartment he had at the time—he was shocked but was happy enough to agree. Mortimer didn't have many things, so you didn't take that many trips from his place to yours, you only really needed to pack your car up once before all of his belongings were at your house.

There were times when he would randomly pull you close to his body and sway to music that wasn't playing. He would also like going on hikes, or long walks where it would just be the two of you—he'd also climb up some of the rocks during the hike and jump back down to where you are on the trail.

Mortimer would probably stare at you a lot, not believing that you were really there or that you two were dating because he doesn't have much self-esteem due to his looks, but you always reassure him that you love him and that you're not going anywhere. Speaking of which, you'd be the first to say it because he'd probably be too shy or scared to, believing that it was either too soon or that it would end the relationship if you didn't feel the same way.

Mortimer would probably sleep curled up beside you, maybe resting his head on your stomach if you two were just laying together, maybe watching TV or if you were reading a book and he just wanted to be close by.

Helping him if he got any flashbacks from the war, trying your best to make him feel safe again, or to remind him that he's back home.

Engagement:

Mortimer was incredibly nervous to ask you to marry him. When he asked your parents for permission, he almost pissed himself because he was sure that they would say no because he was a mutant, and because they didn't really see much of him as the two of you kept to yourselves most of the time. But, they thought he was better than some of your past boyfriends as he always tried to make you happy and make sure that you knew you were loved and cared for—which was all they could have asked for really. When they said yes, he got Alex to help pick out a ring, because he didn't know what was good or not, and Alex was considered the ladies man.

He would have either cooked you a nice meal or maybe he would have taken you out to a restaurant and asked the restaurant beforehand if the two of you could be seated somewhere slightly away from other people—as he didn't want too many people watching just in case it didn't go well.

He didn't know if he wanted to ask you after the meal or if he should have the ring with the dessert—again, he asked Alex for help, who asked Raven what she thought would be best, even though she didn't care too much. When he decided, he chose to ask after the meal.

His hands were shaking and he fumbled on his words a lot because you would either say yes, or you would say no and everything would end up awkward, which was something he didn't want because he didn't want to lose you.

After you said yes, he stared at you in shock for a few minutes before he realised what was happening and slipped the ring onto your finger gently. Smiling non-stop for the rest of the evening.

Your parents were excited, as were your friends, that the two of you were finally engaged—as they may have made a bet to see how long it would have taken. Almost everyone wanted to help plan the wedding, which was overwhelming to say the least, especially as Mortimer wasn't a huge fan of the attention the both of you were now receiving because he liked keeping things private.

Marriage:

Mortimer didn't want a too big of a wedding, which you didn't mind, it felt more personal that you only invited a select few to attend.

He stuttered a lot at the altar but seemed to calm down when you told him to imagine that it was only the two of you, rather than a room full of people watching.

To save money, the two of you didn't go somewhere expensive for the honeymoon. Maybe you went to a small get away, or perhaps Charles suggested a few places.

Whenever the two of you went out on dinner dates, he would never get used to the fact that the reservation was under 'Mr and Mrs Toynbee'.

You would always support one another, just like before when you first started your relationship, but you would probably have to make more careful decisions, especially if they were big ones because the two of you were now married, not just dating.

Despite being married, Mortimer would still go out of his way to impress you and show off.

Family:

You knew, in the back of your mind, that he wanted to ask about starting a family with you but never did because he was still on the fence about whether he wanted them or not. He was also too nervous to ask as he didn't think you would want to have any with him, mainly because he was a mutant and would more than likely pass on the gene to your children—and he didn't want them to get the same mutation as him because he didn't want them to be bullied or hate themselves or him for it. But, of course, he didn't have to ask as you had set up a small surprise for when he got home from work to reveal to him that you were pregnant, two months after being married. When he saw the surprise he would turn to face you, not entirely sure what was happening, or if it was a joke, and he would see you smiling widely while holding up four positive tests—you wanted to be sure.

When you gave birth to your first child, who was a boy, you both decided to call him Hugo. He was your only child for two years before you had your second child, a little girl called Wendy, and then another year or so later you had another boy called Samuel.

Mortimer was very gentle with your children, and he liked playing with them, often getting them to help take part in small pranks, when they were old enough, of course, and if they wanted to, when you brought them to the mansion to visit some of the others. The pranks were mainly harmless, sometimes messy, but it made your children happy just to spend time with their father, and Mortimer was happy that he got to spend any time with them at all.

He didn't like being the punishing parent because of his past, so you were the one who had to be the mean parent sometimes.

Before you gave birth to Samuel, Mortimer brought home a stray dog after his shift at the restaurant. Mortimer somehow persuaded you to take in the dog, despite not knowing if it had fleas or something else wrong with it that could potentially harm your children, but Mortimer cleaned him and brought him to the vets and you ended up keeping him.

Your parents loved him, and the children, and told him that it was okay if they ended up having a mutation like his, or any mutation at all, just as long as they were healthy and happy.

One night, when the two of you were laying in bed, he would randomly thank you for everything you had done for him, and for the life you had given him because he couldn't imagine where he would have been without you, or if he would have still been alive.
