[JG] May The Best Summers Win.
The air surrounding you seemed to thin out as you struggled to catch your breath. Jean sat in front of you, underneath one of the large trees outside, with her face illuminated by the light of the moon that caused a heavenly glow to appear on her pale skin. It wasn't unusual for the two of you to sneak out at night while the others slept, it was one of the only times you two had alone where Scott wasn't tagging along, stealing the attention for himself. She smiled over at you, tilting her head slightly, which caused her red curls to shift and expose more of her neck as they fell down her back. Jean had reached her hands forward to take hold of yours, rubbing her thumbs against your knuckles. Her skin was cold compared to yours, so you felt her grip on your hands tighten when you generated more heat in the palms of your hands. Unlike your brothers, you couldn't create energy blasts from plasma or shoot concussion beams, but you were able to manipulate energy. Jean hummed faintly, her smile growing wider as she closed her eyes when she felt you warm up your hands more for her.
"I really needed this," Jean's voice was soft as it carried over to you with the light breeze.
"Oh, yeah?" You asked, raising an eyebrow. "Why's that?"
"It's been a long day," she answered vaguely, sighing deeply as she opened her eyes. Her smile began to fade, but not completely.
"Anything to do with my snotty little brother? Do you want me to beat him up for you?"
Jean laughed quietly, shaking her head. "No, although Scott did ramble on a lot today."
"That's because he has a crush on you," you told her, to which she awkwardly smiled at. "I'm sure you figured that one out on your own though." Jean nodded her head. "His thoughts aren't exactly quiet when it comes to you. But, if it wasn't Scott... then what's got you feeling like this?"
"Do you remember the first time we met?" Jean asked suddenly, seemingly dodging the question.
Scott slowly made his way up the front steps of the mansion with the help of Alex and yourself. He had bandages wrapped around his head, covering his eyes, as a way to make sure that he wouldn't open them and destroy anything like he did with the school. He blindly slapped at your hands as you stifled a laugh, trying not to make a comment to Alex, that he looked like an old man who threw his back out, or who had haemorrhoids. Alex looked over at you with a grin when Scott panicked, thinking he was going to fall down the steps, and gripped onto your arm like it was his lifeline. Once the front steps were finally conquered, and Scott no longer had to look like he was in pain, you hooked your left arm with his right and guided him into the mansion foyer. Alex placed his right hand onto Scott's left shoulder and steered the two of you towards the hallway on the left-hand side. In front of the three of you, you noticed a red-headed girl holding books to her chest, quickly making her way through the hallway. You let go of Scott, knowing Alex had a hold on him and side-stepped out of the way for her.
The first impression you had of her was that she was beautiful, and you were glad Scott couldn't see because it then meant that you would have a head start in getting to know her before he eventually stole her away like he did with every other girl you seemed slightly interested in. Scott, not seeing her, however, bumped into her, causing her books to fall out of her hands. Instead of the books and papers dropping to the ground, she held her hand out, stopping them mid-air, pulling them back towards her hands. Silently, you watched her, taking note that she was able to do what you could do. The girl moved her lips as she spoke, and you could vaguely make out the fact that Alex and Scott had been saying something as well, but you couldn't focus. Everything sounded like it was underwater as your attention was solely focused on the girl. You could only stare dumbly at her, watching as she clutched her books tighter to her chest, and as she turned to walk away from the three of you. Her eyes caught your stare and her cheeks flushed while she tried hiding a small smile before she completely turned away from you and walked off.
"Do you know her or something?" Scott asked, turning his head to where he thought you might be standing.
"No... but I want to though," you mumbled quietly, your brothers could barely hear you, which probably saved you from embarrassment and teasing. Alex clicked his fingers in front of your face and you snapped out of your trance-like state. "No. Why?"
"She said that you told her my name."
"I've never seen her before."
"Then why did she say that?"
With a shrug, you looked away from the empty space that she had once been standing in and towards Scott. "I wasn't really listening to what she was saying."
"She said she's telepathic," Scott informed you.
"Mmm, well... maybe she read my mind? I don't know," you told him, shrugging, "but what I do know is that she's not the only one who's telepathic, little brother."
"You're only four minutes older than me!" He argued, clearly only listening to the end of your comment.
"Oh, Scotty boy," you spoke with a sigh. "Those four minutes equate to a lifetime."
Alex had laughed at that while Scott scoffed at your reply before he registered the rest of what you told him. "Wait, you're telepathic? Why didn't you tell us?"
"I told Alex when I found out, I kept you out of the loop to use it against you."
"I hate you."
"I'm sure I'll get over it." You waved him off, rolling your eyes.
Scott tried hitting the air in front of himself, obviously trying to hit you, but failed, causing Alex and yourself to laugh at him once more that day. "Oh, shut up."
"Yeah..." You nodded, smiling faintly before your eyes widened and you looked at her alarmed. "Wait, am I the problem?"
"No!" She quickly reassured you, "Not at all, it's just..."
"What? Is it Alex? Do you have a thing for him?"
"No, I don't have a thing for Alex," she replied, pulling a slightly grossed out expression.
"You've lost me, Jean, I don't know what's going on."
"But you remember that day, right?"
"Hard to forget the day that your little twin brother destroys the Professors favourite tree and then gets given douchebag sunglasses that he has to wear for the rest of his life," you replied.
Jean lightly slapped your hands, trying to get you to focus. "So, you remember that day. Do you remember how you felt? What you thought about?"
"Again, I'm not sure what's going on. Why are you—?"
"Because I do," she interrupted. "I remember that you thought that I was beautiful, the first time you had ever seen me. You thought about how worried you were that when Scott was finally able to see, that he would swoop in and steal the attention away from you because he steals the attention from all the girls you were interested in."
"Well, this isn't embarrassing or anything..."
"Look, what I'm trying to say is... Scott hasn't stolen my attention, at all. It's all yours."
"Is this a prank?"
"No?" Jean raised an eyebrow. "Why would it be?"
"Because there is no way that the girl that I like possibly likes me back."
"Well, I do." She shrugged, smiling shyly as her cheeks began to have some colour to them. "And I was thinking that maybe, tomorrow, we could hang out somewhere that isn't the mansion... together... without Scott."
"Sounds like our first date is already off to a good start."
