Chapter 31

The next morning, I'm sure to get up on time. Even still, I find my siblings have left early, which has me wondering if it's a good sign or a precursor of ill omens. Able to get in a decent breakfast, paired with the larger dinner I'd had the night before, helps the last remaining aches in my body. Even my ribs feel fine, which probably means they were just bruised, no actual damage.

I duck out of the house before seeing if my parents are still around, dreading both the thought of the information I'm withholding and the knowledge that they'll be kicking me out soon. Makes things a little awkward. I have saved newspaper clippings of apartment listings, but with the news of the Packs moving to new land... I need to talk to someone soon.

Real question that keeps lingering in the back of my head, no matter how much I try to quell it though, is do I really want to go with them? If I'm being truly honest with myself, I don't know. It didn't used to be this hard to get along with the others, and thanks to my sister, it's getting increasingly worse with the Grotto Wolves as well. If we're going to be moving to a place where we combine everyone, including a potential third Pack, then that's a whole lot of malcontent that could be directed at me just because she isn't happy. I didn't hear the whole speech that night, but enough to know another Pack is bordering the acquired territory.

Looking up at the sky as I make the walk to the school, a flock of birds going by have my thoughts drifting to Kal's wish that she'd told me about once. Her desire to be a bird; with the ability to fly anywhere she wanted. I recall thinking of my fear of not having a net, a Pack, to catch me if I ever fell, but anymore, it seems that very net, that very Pack, is what's keeping my wings clipped.

I had the idea to continue on to college, to help the Pack in any way I could. I'd have to petition the Alpha's first of course, and I'm sure they'd let me since I've shown I'm not afraid to work. Mythine spreading around that I'm feral though could endanger that. While I would think it's pretty obvious I'm not, history has shown that problems are easier to get rid of than investigate.

I jog myself out of my daydreams to find myself walking onto school property, to find it abuzz with activity. Moreso than usual. Not wanting anything to do with what's going on, I keep to the edges and try to get to my classes without being noticed. Doesn't seem to be in the cards for me, however, as soon as I step on the grounds, it seems all eyes are on me.

Hunching in on myself, I tighten my hold on my bag's shoulder strap, feeling the heavy weight of my books on my hip. Books, notebooks, and a change of clothes that'll be used as gym clothes for the rest of the year as it would be a waste to buy another uniform this late. I'm actually surprised they waited this long before destroying it. My grade will get docked, but it's hard to fail a werewolf in a P.E. class.

Able to turn down the hallway I need for my class, I'm halfway there, I can see the door, but I don't make it. Not even twenty feet away I get shoved into the lockers that line the walls. Seconds later it's followed with a punch to the gut that drops me to the floor. My teeth grit hard as I catch the foot coming in for a strike as well, but I've had enough.

Reaching up, I grab the foot and twist hard before it can connect with me. The move is so quick and easy you'd think I'd performed it hundreds of times before. The bone snaps audibly, causing the owner of it to scream before they drop. This in turn calls out the teacher from the room not far away. Of course they come for that sound.

Of course I'm the one who gets the blame for the whole fight and sent to the principal's office. I don't even know the chick who tried to kick me. Her being human has me feeling a little guilty, as I didn't restrain myself, so her ankle is really messed up. The ones who shoved and hit me are wolves though. Guess she thought she was going to be slick and get a hit in and just lucked out.

Kal and Marie are in the hall as I get escorted away, they want to follow but the bell rings and everyone is ordered to class. I wave them off but ask Kal to get my work for me. She looks worried but nods anyway. Shooting dirty looks to the girls in the group that had jumped me, so I'm guessing they're Grotto wolves.

On the way down the hall I hear multiple people mutter about 'feral' and it has me becoming nervous. Not just wolves but humans as well are bringing it up now. I keep my head down but I again clench my bag strap. Markus had said he'd talk to the Alpha's about this, but if he did, it was too late.
