TWO

Love?
I know it was what my mother felt for me. Scratch that, I think it was what my mother felt for me.

I know love was what the fictional characters I had read about had for their second other.

Love was probably what I felt for my mother.

Pity and maybe a little dash of disgust was what I felt for Tolu as he banged my door, high as the Eiffel tower -or rather, high as fuck.

"Let me in, I go kill you this night[I will kill you tonight]" he slurred and I rolled my eyes. Again, it was not the first time.

"Go away, Tolu" I called and silently wondered why he was high at three twenty four in the afternoon.

"Na me go sell you las las[In the end, I'll be the one to sell you]" he chuckled and I laughed at how stupid he sounded. Sell me?

"Are you insane?"

"Stop speaking English! You think you're better than everyone else?"

"No! Me? No, I'm not but I'm surely better than some twenty four year old man who has no idea of the direction his life is going, with no future ambition, has been rusticated five times, gets high almost every day -what am I saying?- he's never sober, and has no respect for himself. Again, to answer your question. No, I'm not better than everyone else but I'm better than you" I told him calmly, unwilling to stress myself over a man-child.

"God punish you. Omo ale![Bastard] Fucking Bastard!" he kicked my door and I pursed my lips when I didn't hear his heavy footsteps. I eyed the door suspiciously with a pout on my lips.

"I will make you regret this, Wuraola" I rolled my eyes and went back to the new book I picked from my shelf. He never failed to make threats, meaningless threats that never scared me....okay, maybe a little but I knew he would carry them out.

He still didn't walk away and I was a tad bit scared.

"I-i need money" he told me and I exhaled.

"I don't have any money, Toluwalope!" I groaned. It was the truth. I didn't have any money.

"Liar!"

"Ask mommy for money" I told him and he laughed like some crazed wild animal

"And you think she will give it to me?"

"Not my business, Tolu. If she won't give y-"

"Shut up" I heard his footsteps as he walked away and I sighed in relief. Mom needed to do something about Tolu. I muttered a series of swear words I knew I would never say in the presence of my mom.

Two hours later, mom got home while I was in the living room watching TV with my legs resting on where my head should have been and my head where my ass should have been.

"Hey, Love. I've told you, stop sitting like that." She still kissed my head anyways and I did not move either.

"Tolu said he was going to sell me" I told her, the words of my brother still bothering me.

"Omo buruku yen![That bad child] Ignore him" I could tell that she was uncomfortable with Tolu's actions lately. I was too.

"He said he would kill me"

"Ignore him" she said again and I turned to her before looking at the TV again

"He said he needs money" I told her and she hissed before pulling of her blue scrubs in the middle of the living room.

"Toluwalope!" she yelled and I sighed before sitting down properly.

"He left, said he was going 'out'" I had air quotes with my hands.

"Omo yen ma pa mi[That child will kill me]" she muttered and grabbed her handbag as she walked up to her room, leaving me. I shifted back to my former position and continued to watch the Yoruba movie that was on. It was a pretty stupid movie, honestly but it was intriguing and funny.

I heard the shower come on from my mom's room and I walked to the kitchen, searching for any food substance when I heard a knock at the door. I rolled my eyes, knowing it was Tolu.

"There's someone at the door, mommy!" I called and opened the fridge then grabbed a bunch of grapes.

My mom ran towards the door in her yellow SpongeBob square pants towel and opened the door, ready to yell when I heard her gasp in shock rather. I walked out of the kitchen and my jaw dropped as some hefty men in black stood in front of her.

"Good Afternoon. How can I help you?

"We're here for our payment" They were three large and bulky white men, I believed, but the man who spoke had an Italian accent.

"I think you have the wrong house, gentlemen"

"No, ma'am. Is this the house of Toluwalope Aiyedun?" my heart dropped and I remembered what he said.

I dropped the grapes and ran to my room, locking the door behind me. My vision blurred as I tried to breathe but it was proving difficult. I felt myself fall asleep unconsciously until I heard my mom scream.

"Don't touch my baby! No! No!" the heavy footsteps stopped at my door and the handle of the door rattled

"Don't make this difficult, bambino" I cried and gasped, shifting backwards and hoping that the earth would open up and swallow me.

"Take me instead! Leave her" she cried and I cried as well.

"We gave Mr. Aiyedun a sum of One million dollars three months ago, he promised to pay last month and since my boss is...generous, he gave him an extra month to pay. Mr. Aiyedun contacted us and let us know that he will be willing to give us his sister to clear his debt"

"Tolu ti koba mi o![Tolu has put me in trouble]" mom screamed and I covered my mouth as the tears fell. I gasped as the door was kicked off its hinges and I screamed as the Italian man came towards me.

"Please, no" I dropped to my knees and shook my head. He pulled out a syringe and shoved it into my thigh.

I continued to beg till the last thing I saw after he threw me over his shoulder was my mother being held by those men, tears rushing down her face, uncaring that her towel was lost in the fight for my life.
