Chapter three: Tower
"Here kid, geez you're freezing" Tony said passing peter a blanket.
They were in the back of the Limo, Happy driving them towards the tower. Peters head swum with every movement. He closed his eyes when the flashing lights became too much.
"Thank you" he mumbled out, his throat hurt too much to speak any louder.
"Of course kid, can I ask you something?" Tony said, turning away from Peter.
"S-ure" he croaked out, sniffling as his nose ran.
"Why'd all those kids boo, you're Spider-Man don't they know you protect them?"
Peter stayed quiet for a moment, being sick really hindered his ability to come up with a lie.
"It's nothing, they just... it's nothing" he couldn't bring himself to tell him.
"Come on kid, tell me. I know we just met but I there's a chance we're going to work together, Fury is going to want to meet you"
"I guess they just don't think a freak could save them"
"Do they call you a freak?"
"Yeah and mutant, but I mean they're right. I'm not normal, they shouldn't praise me just because I stop a couple muggings"
"No, look at me" Tony looked into Peters hazy eyes, "you are not a freak yeah you're different but so Is everyone. If everyone was the same the world would be a boring place, Caps got mutated Genes that doesn't make him a freak, Bruce turns into a big green monster when he's angry, that doesn't make him a freak. Hell I have a giant metal tube in my chest, doesn't make me any less human"
Peter sniffled, and tried to blink away tears. He always got emotional when he was sick, he thought it might have something to do with the fact he never had parents to hold him when he was sick. Yes he had may, and even Ben for a while. But it wasn't the same.
"Come on, let's get you checked out. As you said before your metabolism should be healing you right now, I want to see why it isn't"
He pulled peter out of the car and let him lean on him as they walked to the private elevator.
Under other circumstances Peter would be freaking out at the prospect of stepping foot in Stark/Avengers Tower. But his head was pounding too much to make sense of what he was seeing.
On the ride up though, he had enough clarity for a moment to remember to call May. She'd freak out if he didn't come home. He pulled out his cracked phone and scrolled to her contact. Tony stayed quiet, having an idea as to what he was doing, and not wanting to interrupt.
"Hey May" he answered when the line connected.
"Oh my god peter are you ok? The school called and said there was a lockdown and then said you didn't go to class after an assembly, I thought maybe you'd gone to help as Spider-Man"
"Breathe May, I'm ok"
"Are you sure you sound sick, where are you?"
"I'm with Tony Stark, we're at Stark towers. We both figured it wouldn't be long before he wanted to talk to Spider-Man"
"Ok that makes sense, but are you sick?"
"Yeah, we're going to see why my healing isn't working properly, I got sick from the rain and the cold classrooms. It's just a cold though may, I'll be home later"
"Ok be safe peter, love you"
"Love you too May" he heard the line disconnect and put the phone back in his pocket.
"If you thought I wanted to talk why didn't you just swing to the tower and stop in?" Tony asked leaning against the opposite wall.
"I didn't want to bother you, it's not my choice wether you want to talk or not" he shrugged, trying to hold onto the clear headedness before his cold made him delirious. The last time he'd gotten a normal cold was before the spider bite, and even back then he always got delirious, no matter how bad the cold was.
"I guess that makes sense, but from now on you can stop at the tower whenever. We have a fully functioning med bay which you'll see soon. You can always stop by and we'll fix you up if you get hurt on patrol. I've seen the news reports, you get stabbed way too often. Might have to add reinforcements against knives to your suit"
"My suit?" He asked, picturing his run down jumpsuit.
"Ah, not your home made onesie, no, the one I've been working on for you. You're going to love it"
"I don't even know what to say, thank you Mr.Stark"
"Please, call me Tony. And the suits the least I can do" he smiled, and turned his head towards the doors as they opened. He walked over to Peter whose lack of energy suddenly returned. He put and arm around him and helped him walk into the hallway. Peter was breathing heavily by the time they made it to where they were going. It looked like a normal guest bedroom, furnished enough where it wasn't overcrowded. "I figured you'd rather not stay in a blinding white med bay room, so you can stay in here and I'll get Bruce to bring the equipment here"
"Tha-k you" he mumbled, finding it hard to stay awake on the soft mattress. The room was heated to the perfect temperature and he snuggled against the pillows.
"Don't fall asleep just yet" Tony chuckled, "hey Brucie, here's the Spiderboy"
"'Piderman" peter mumbled.
They both chuckled and Bruce got to work, treating his cold symptoms and figuring out why his healing wasn't working.
"Tony can I speak with you" he said, not so much asking a question as he pulled Tony from the room.
"What's up?" He asked the scientist.
"I can't find anything physically wrong with the kids healing factor, there's no toxins. It's not the right weather for it to be slow, even with the rain. He's well nourished and fr what I can tell he sleeps the right amount most nights"
"Then what's do you think it is?" Tony asked, furrowing his brows.
"To be completely honest, I think it's psychological. He's not letting himself heal. It's almost as if he keeps telling himself he shouldn't be healing, he might not even be doing it consciously. There's just a part of him that doesn't believe he should be healthy"
"Oh" tony said, he didn't know what to make with that information. Then he remembered the call, "he called me a few nights ago" he started pulling Bruce back form where he was walking.
"About what, how'd he get your number"
"That's the thing, he didn't do much get my number as stumble across it. He called it thinking it was a self help line, I talked him through what he was dealing with that night. I couldn't just hang up"
"That makes sense, since you've already talked to him you need to be the one to continue it"
"But isn't Sam better for this"
"Sometimes yes, but you've established a trusting relationship with the kid, even if he doesn't know it's you he called, tell him and he'll open up. Otherwise he's just going to keep making himself sick"
"Ok I'll try" Tony sighed and watched Bruce walk back towards his lab.
