Chapter 29// Family Time
Matthew is bold. Chloe is the regular font. Everyone else is italics
It's Friday afternoon and tomorrow is graduation day. I turned in my paper where I talked about my college life and about Matthew. I finished Melissa and Emma's painting. I mean she did watch me work on the drawing but she didn't see me paint it. I think I did wonderful on both of their paintings. I'm actually so stoked for them to see what I did especially Melissa since she doesn't know what the painting looks like. Hell, she doesn't even know I'm doing this. Anyway, Matthew hasn't called or texted me. He said we were going to talk about the kiss that day but it's been days later and he still hasn't talked to me.
I can't help but feel some type of emotion. Like I'm mad at him but I expected it. I mean he does have a girlfriend. But he did kiss me back. So what did it mean? Ugh. I can't think about that right now. I need to focus on graduating. Since Melissa has been working a lot lately. Emma has been willing to visit me every day. She would even stay the night like today. I'm so thankful for her. Without Emma, I'd be moping around while Melissa is out and Matthew not talking to me.
Speaking of Emma she is currently at my house. Right now we were in a mood to watch movies so we popped some popcorn and we started watching movies. "She knows she's about to catch feelings for him," I say as I stuff some popcorn in my mouth.
"How do you know that?"
"Did you not see the way she looked at him? While he was playing with his nephew she's talking to his parents and she started smiling while looking at him. She so has feelings for him. It's like in her head she's saying he's not the asshole I thought he was."
"You got a point." I hear a loud knock on the door.
"I'll get it." I pause the movie and I give her the popcorn bowl. I get up and I walk to the door and I open it.
"Chloe Bear." I gasp.
"Oh my god. You're here." I jump into his arms and I give him a bone-crushing hug. He spins me around. I laugh as he does that. He then puts me down and I look behind him. Camryn is standing there grinning. I push Cole out of the way and I give Camryn a bone-crushing hug. "Oh my god. Look at you." I pull away from her.
"Hey, you didn't have to push me out the way." He frowns and I roll my eyes. I steady her face and her body.
"God you look prettier than me I'm jealous." She laughs.
"No way. You look prettier." I shake my head.
"No way."
"So you're just going to ignore me like that?"
"You'll be fine." He pouts and I roll my eyes and Camryn laughs. Cole walks over to us. "God look at you too. It's been soo long. Cole, you look so damn grown and so do you Camryn." I ruffle both of there hair making sure I mess it up. They both whine. I laugh.
"More like look at you," Cole says as Camryn fixes her hair.
"What about me?"
"You look so mature. You're growing up too." I laugh. I see Cole's eyes shift to Emma who is still sitting on the couch looking hella awkward. "Who is this?"
"Emma this is my older brother Cole and my little sister Camryn." I rest my head on Cole's shoulder while I put my arm around Camryn. "Cole and Camryn meet Emma Westly." Emma smiles and waves.
"Hey, guys nice to meet you," Cole whispers in my ear.
"She's gorgeous."
"I know right. But don't even think about it, mister." He rolls his eyes. "Emma is Matthew's older sister. You know Matthew the one I was telling you guys about." They both nod.
"Where is he anyway?"
"That's a good question Camryn." I look at Emma. She shrugs.
"I honestly don't know. He's barely at the hotel anymore. He's probably with Vivian." She rolls her eyes.
"Who is Vivian?" Cole and Camryn say at the same time.
"This girl Matthew met last week at the mall. They started dating like two days later I think." I shrug.
"Will we get to meet him tomorrow?" I shrug at Cole. I honestly don't know. I mean I hope so or him coming here was all for nothing. I look at Emma.
"He better be. He told me he was going." Cole crosses his arm.
"He better be or I'm going to ruffle him up a little bit. Maybe knock some sense into him." I roll my eyes.
"Geez Cole."
"Damn Cole you can't say that in front of his sister like that." Camryn rolls her eyes and facepalms. "I'm sorry about Cole. He's too overprotecting when it comes to us." We both roll our eyes. But just wait until he finds out about the guy who only asked me out for a bet. It's going to be over for that dude.
"Ugh fine. I apologize." Emma laughs.
"Hey don't. Honestly, I wouldn't mind. He does need some sense knocked into his brain by the way he's acting right now." She frowns. I nod in agreement. We all sit on my couch.
"Hey, where are Mom and Dad?"
"They said they will come by later. They wanted to settle in and relax a little bit."
"That's fine. Did you guys drive in one car?" Cole shakes his head.
"No. Mom and dad drove in there cars and we drove in my car." Cole sits down and so do we. "Okay. Hey, Chloe do you still not know how to drive?" I roll my eyes.
"I don't have my license if that's what your asking."
"Why not?" I look at him like he's stupid.
"You know why."
"Come on Chloe that was like 2 or 3 years ago."
"It doesn't matter. I don't trust myself." Camryn puts her hand on my arm.
"Wait what exactly happened?" I sigh. God, I forgot I didn't tell Emma this.
"Go ahead."
"So Melissa was teaching Chloe how to drive and she almost hit a child. Ever since that she has not gotten behind the wheel because she doesn't trust herself."
"It's just. I'm scared. What if I actually hit a child. I could never forgive myself. Plus I would have to pay for the damage and I don't have that kind of money. I don't even have a fucking job yet. Mom and dad still paying for college and shit." I sigh. I honestly need to get a job.
"Wasn't my brother supposed to teach you how to drive?"
"Yeah, he said he was but..." I snort. "Doesn't seem like I will get him all to myself since Vivian is taking him away from me." I frown.
"Chloe?"
"Yes, Camryn?"
"Do you like Matthew?"
"Of course I do."
"Wait. What!?" Cole sits up. I shrug. "I didn't know about this. Why aren't you doing anything?"
"That's what I've been telling her. I've been telling her to get what's hers." I sigh.
"Guys it's not that easy. I can't just walk up to them and be like hey Matthew is mine. Vivian go fuck yourself." Camryn snorts. Even though I would love to say that. Like if I could trust me I would.
"Yes, you can." They all say at the same time.
"Alright fine. Let's say that I can. Let's just say I invade one of their little stupid dates and I say Matthew is mine. Fuck you, Vivian. It wouldn't matter because he doesn't like me." They all frown.
"Why do you say that?" Emma says.
"Because after we kissed he hasn't talked to me ever since." Both Cole and Camryn stand up so fast.
"You kissed him?" They say at the same time. "When?"
"A few days ago. But it doesn't matter he's been avoiding me." Cole's curls his hand into a fist.
"That son of a bitch." I grab Cole's arm forcing him to sit back down.
"Cole it's fine. Right now I can't think about my boy problems. I need to focus on graduating. Who cares anyway. I mean he chose who he wanted. I don't care. Fuck him." I look at Emma and I realize what I said. "I didn't mean fuck him." Emma laughs.
"It's okay. Honestly."
"Emma is literally the best." Smile.
"I agree." I give Cole the look and he rolls his eyes.
"Yeah, she really is. She's also very supportive and her hugs make you feel better. Like so much better." Cole smirks.
"I'm feeling sad you think you can make me feel better?" I roll my eyes. Oh my god, Cole.
"Cole. Do not even think about it." Camryn glares at him. Emma and I laugh. Cole pouts.
"God, Emma I'm so sorry by how my brother is acting." Camryn facepalms while I nod.
"It's okay," Cole smirks.
"See she's fine with it." Camryn and I both slap the back of his head. He pouts as he whines. He starts rubbing the back of his head.
An hour later we talk and they get to know us. My phone dings. I pull my phone out and it's mom.
Mom: We are on our way.
Me: Okay see you soon.
I turn my phone off. "Mom and Dad are on their way. We should get ready." Emma nods.
"Okay. I can borrow your clothes right?"
"Of course. Or Melissa's if you want."
"Where is Melissa anyway?" I look at Cole. He's had a small crush on Melissa back in high school. I'm not sure if he does anymore. But they would look cute together though.
"She's working. Lately, she has been working a lot lately since she's trying to get enough money to go back home. She wants to be with her family."
"When will we see her?"
"I'm not sure Cam. Maybe tonight when she gets back."
"Okay."
"Now we are going to shower and stuff. Don't do anything to mess this apartment up." I look at Cole. "I'm talking to you." I point at him.
"What? Me? I could never." I glare at him.
"Remember one day mom left you to take care of us while they went on a trip. You almost burned the house down and you broke one of mom's favorite vase. She was so furious."
"Hey, that was like 7 years ago."
"Still don't do anything." He glares at me. "Camryn make sure he doesn't break anything." She grins.
"You got it." Emma laughs and then walks away. She goes to my room.
"Your brother is something else." I laugh.
"He sure is. He's the oldest and still acts like a baby." She laughs.
"He's pretty cute." I laugh. "Sorry."
"It's okay. Most of my 'friends' back in high school liked him and thought he was pretty cute. Some of them only used me to get to him. I only had one true friend back in high school and that was Melissa. I mean yeah she thought he's cute but she didn't use me like the others." I shrug.
"I'm sorry."
"It's okay. A lot of stuff happened back in high school. Not just people using me to get to my brother but other stuff with guys. But I'll tell you when we are doing our hair." She smiles and nods.
"Okay." She goes to my closet. "Hey, can I wear this red dress?" She says as she takes the dress off the hangar. I nod.
"Of course."
"I'll be right back. Going to take a shower."
"Alright." She puts her medium length hair in a messy bun and walks out closing the door behind her. I turn the shower on and while it's warming up I pick my outfit out. I go back into the bathroom and I get in the shower. When I finish I put my white crop top shirt on that says Queen Bee and my jeaned short shorts.
I tie my black and white converse. Just as I finish I hear a knock. "Come in." The door opens and Emma's head pops through. She walks in all the way and closes the door. "You look really pretty."
"Thanks. So do you." I thank her and we go into my bathroom. She takes her hair out of the messy bun and starts brushing it. "So what happened in high school?" I start brushing my hair.
"There were a lot of guys who played with my feelings. You would think they aren't jerks and they actually like you but... Boy was I wrong." I snort as I shake my head. "There were a few guys who didn't actually like me. They just wanted to have some fun. They just wanted to play with me."
"What do you mean?" She asks while doing a side braid into a ponytail hairstyle.
"They just wanted to have someone to mess with them when they are bored. They just wanted to play with them. They would always say I was easy to get. Okay, so a few days after I met Matthew. I finished my last class of the day and this guy walks up to me. He starts talking to me saying we should hang out and so he gives me my number. I was surprised because one I didn't know who he was and it seemed sketchy to me but Matthew was like go for it."
I shrug as I try and make my hair look messy and I do a loose braid. "So I took Matthew's advice. We went out the next day and he got closer to me. He leaned in like he was going to kiss me. I didn't really think much of it. I mean it's been a while since I kissed a guy. More like hanging out with one."
I bite my lip. God, I remember it like it was yesterday and I fucking hate it. "So he kissed me and I kissed him back and he started to make out with me. When we were done kissing he smirked and said that was an easy task. 60 bucks. Here I come." Emma's mouth goes wide and she stops doing what she is doing. "I obviously didn't know what he meant so I asked him. He said his friends betted him to give me his number, ask me out, and make out with me. He smirks and says that I was easy to get and I was worth the money."
I stop doing my hair and I look down. "I got so angry but I also felt hurt and I didn't know what to do so I just left. That's when Matthew called me and I couldn't help but cry. He got hella pissed when I told him. But at the end of the day, he cheered me up." I smile.
"Chloe I'm so sorry that happened to you." I shrug.
"It's okay. I guess guys aren't meant for me. It's like I have bad luck or something. But there was this one guy. My freshman year. We lasted for a year until he had to move. He was a great guy and he was my first. He didn't take advantage of me." She frowns and I look away. "Let's do our makeup and go back to my siblings." She nods.
Once we finish our makeup I put my accessories on and I put my sunglasses on the top of my head. I grab my purse and phone and we walk to the living room. "Took you so long." Cole turns his head. "Oh hell no."
"What?"
"You are not wearing that." I roll my eyes.
"Oh my god, Cole."
"No those shorts are too short. Go change. Put some pants on." Camryn snorts.
"Why?" I groan.
"All the boys going to be staring." I roll my eyes.
"Oh my god fine." Emma giggles. Cole's eyes shift to her.
"You look pretty, Emma." I roll my eyes.
"Thank you, Cole." He nods. I walk back to my room. Ugh, Cole is so annoying. I'm not even feeling this outfit anymore. Ugh, I might as well change my whole outfit. I go to my closet and I pick a random shirt. It's a long sleeve flannel. Not bad.
"Hey." I turn around and it's Emma. She closes the door. I smile.
"Hey."
"Sorry I just wanted to be in here with you. It's a little awkward just being in there with your older brother and little sister." I laugh.
"It's okay. Hey, can you hand me a pair of black skinny jeans in one of my drawers?" She nods. She goes to my drawer and grabs a pair of black skinny jeans and hands them to me. "Thanks." I take my clothes off and I put that outfit on. Emma goes to my closet.
"You should wear these boots." She says as she bends down and picks them up and hands them to me. The boots are black it goes above the ankle a little bit and it has a thick high heel.
"Thanks."
"No problem." I put the boots on and I start tying the shoelaces.
"Hey umm. Emma, I have a question."
"What is it?" She sits beside me as I just finished tying my boots.
"Do you think Matthew will be here tomorrow?"
"Of course. He has to. He knows how much this means to you."
"What if he doesn't? Like I wouldn't know how to feel if he doesn't show up. When he told me that he wanted to see me walk across the stage it made me so happy. I felt special I don't know why I just did. Probably because no guy has ever said that to me. But he's been ignoring me so I'm doubting it now." I shrug. Emma puts her arm around me.
"Hey. He will be there trust me. He wouldn't lie to his own sister and to someone he really cares about."
"I guess. We should go." She nods. We both stand up. Cole better be happy with this outfit. Because I am not changing again. I grab my phone and purse and I walk out of my room. The deep sound of my boots colliding on the floor. "Cole you better be happy with this outfit because I'm not changing again."
I look up and it's mom and dad and I start grinning. "Mom! Dad!" They get up and they hold their arms out and put me in a big bone-crushing hug. After a few seconds we pull away.
"Look at you Chloe looking so grown." I grin.
"Look at you dad growing a little something." I laugh. "And you mom. You look so pretty." She smiles. "Man my whole family looking better than me. I'm jealous. Except Cole."
"Hey!" I laugh.
"Mom. Dad. This is my new friend Emma." Emma gets out from behind me and stands beside me.
Dad holds his hand out. "Hello Emma. I'm Kian Ryan." She shakes his hand.
"And I'm Alyssa Ryan." Emma shakes mom's hand.
"I'm Emma Westly."
"Nice to meet you, Emma."
"Hey, Chloe that's a better outfit now." I roll my eyes.
"God. You are so annoying." He smirks and everyone else laughs.
"It's my job as you and Camryn's older brother." I roll my eyes.
"Anyone hungry?" We all nod. "Let's go out to eat and talk."
"Awesome. Let's go." Everyone gets up and I open the door. Matthew is standing there. It looks like he was about to knock.
"Matthew. I wasn't expecting you to be here." He rubs the back of his neck.
"Yeah, I should have texted you." I glare at him. "What?" Are you fucking kidding me? I bite my lip to stop myself from saying something rude. I turn and I look at my family.
"Can you guys give me a few minutes?" Mom and dad nod. Emma has her arms crossed. Camryn has a confused face and Cole looks a little pissed. He's standing like he's a bodyguard. He does this every time when I talk to a guy. Cole mumbles something as I lead Matthew to my room and I close the door and I turn to him. "Matthew, what are you doing here?" He sits on the edge of my bed.
"I came to talk to you." I fold my arms.
"Oh, now you want to talk? After you have not been answering my calls or texts." He looks down.
"I know and I'm sorry. It's just Vivian has been keeping me busy and I haven't had time to talk to you." Are you fucking kidding me?
"Are you for real right now? You're really doing this right now." He looks up at me. "You're letting Vivian get in the way when you said you wouldn't. If you were busy maybe a simple fucking text could have helped. Because it's not right that after we kissed you suddenly become busy. How ironic."
"Are you mad?"
"Really Matthew. Are you really going to ask me that?"
"I mean yeah."
"Of course I'm mad. I'm mad that after we kissed you said we were going to talk about it and guess what I get no text or a fucking call back. You suddenly become 'busy'. And you're letting Vivian get in the way of our friendship."
"She is not getting in the way."
"Oh really?"
"Yes. Really." I roll my eyes as I snort.
"You are so unbelievable. I can't believe you right now."
"What?"
"It seems like ever since you met her you've been cutting me short."
"And what does that mean?"
"Come on Matthew you're smarter than this." I shake my head. "You already know the answer." I sigh. "You know what. I don't even want to talk about Vivian. I just want to be happy. I don't want this to ruin my day. I just need to know. Will you be at my graduation?"
"Of course. I wouldn't miss it for the world." I look away from him. He walks up to me and gets super close to me. He lifts my chin up. I avoid contact.
"Look at me." I look up at him. "I know this is important to you. I wouldn't miss this special thing."
"Promise me you won't let Vivian get in the way tomorrow."
"I promise." I stare into his eyes. "Trust me Sexy Cinnamon. I wouldn't miss it for the world. I promise." I nod. He then hugs me and I hug back. We stay like that for a few seconds and then we pull away.
"Hey come hang with my family." He nods. I back up and I open the door. Their heads turn instantly and I grin. "Guys this is Matthew Westly. Emma's little brother." Mom, dad, and Camryn all wave. Except for Cole. He just has his arms still crossed and he glares. Jesus Cole. "Matthew this is my mom, dad, Camryn my little sister and Cole my older brother."
"Nice to meet you guys."
"Nice to meet you too." They all say. Except for Cole of course.
"Likewise." I roll my eyes.
"Well, we introduced ourselves. Let's go."
