Chapter 8
Before Hoseok could even close the door to holding cell four, across the space he watched as the door to the surveillance room opened. His main circle of friends started to head towards him, eyes wide, mouths open ready to bombard him with questions. He simply held his hand up in the air to stop them as he secured the door behind him. And with a wave towards the meeting room, the group of six silently moved to a room with much more privacy.
Hoseok was the last to enter the meeting room and closed the door behind him. He walked to the seat Jimin had left at the closest end of the large conference table and sunk into it while the other five had taken up the chairs on either side. Namjoon and Jin sat on Hoseok's left side with their backs to the window. On the right side, with their backs to the surveillance room, sat Taehyung, Jimin and Jungkook.
The silence amongst the small group was palpable and full of anticipation. The five remained quiet as they waited, as patiently as they could, for Hoseok to lead the impromptu meeting. They all had similar questions on their minds, but they knew they wouldn't have to ask them. As soon as Hoseok collected his thoughts, they knew he would address all of their concerns. Not having to verbally ask their questions was mostly due to the bond they shared, but it was also because of Hoseok's ability to read people as a natural born leader.
"I'm not sure how much you guys heard," Hoseok started as he leant back in his chair and clasped his hands together in front of his chin. "I'm sure once Joon-ah heard the direction the conversation had gone, he called you all."
His suspicions were confirmed as the entire group nodded. Was Hoseok surprised that Namjoon had wanted the rest of them to hear what he had confronted Yoongi with? Not at all. Much like Hoseok, all of them were into music and the underground rap scene. It must have been a shock to them, just as much as it had been for Hoseok, that he had discovered the true identity of the renowned Agust D aka Suga.
"I'm sure he filled you in about the revelation," he assumed to which the rest nodded. "Perhaps I should start from the beginning of how I got the hunch feeling."
"That would be a good start," nodded Jimin with a hint of eagerness.
"While Namjoon-ah was busy with the laptop, I decided to go through Yoongi's house more thoroughly. The first time I was there, I had only done a small sweep, didn't pry too deep you know? So I started in his bedroom. Pretty normal, nothing out of the ordinary. Until I got to the walk-in wardrobe," he recounted his experience to the group.
"On the back wall, there were a few items on display. He had this magnificent display of basketball jerseys. There were two main ones on display, with a bunch more to the side. One had Stephen Curry's name and number on the back of it, and it had even been signed by him and addressed to, get this, to Suga. So I started to think about why the nickname was so familiar," he said, the entire group on the edge of their seats while they listened.
"But then there was another item that also looked familiar for unknown reasons in the beginning. In the middle, between the jerseys, there was a mask. I didn't think much of it at first. It just looked like a cool display of rare collectables at first glance," Hoseok said with a small shrug. "Then I started to think."
"While I zoned out, I started to think about Yoongi. I started to think about his motives behind betraying his father. I thought about the uncharacteristic compliance that normal hostages don't display. I wondered if I could ever trust him," he continued with a frown. "And I just had this gut feeling for the first time to actually consider granting him protection. But at the same time, my head was telling me to get this over with and get him out of our lives."
"Once I broke out of my thoughts, I continued to look through the rest of his jersey collection. The rest of them, well, they were all custom made and had been done with the same name. Every single one had Suga on the back of them," Hoseok paused for a moment, his eyes glossed over as he recalled the moment it all clicked.
"That's the moment when I figured it out. Well, at least when I thought I had. I looked back at the nickname on all of the jerseys and that mask. That's when I realised, you know, it was the mask," he continued as he briefly ran his left hand through his light brown hair. "Deep down, I had the suspicion that Min Yoongi was none other than Suga. And if I was right, then it changed a few things. But I didn't want to assume wrongly."
"All I knew at that moment was that I wanted to offer to keep him safe in case his betrayal against Choi went south," elaborated Hoseok. "If Yoongi couldn't return to his house after the word got out he had been held for ransom, I didn't want him to be left with nothing. Even if he refused the sanctuary and wanted to leave here, I wanted him to at least have a few personal items."
"So that's why you packed the bag? What was in it?" interjected Namjoon since none of them had seen the entire contents that Hoseok had packed.
"I took all of his jerseys, the mask, two pairs of shoes, his personal laptop and that container of hard drives," said Hoseok as he looked at his right hand man. "And then everything from the safe. So some cash, two guns, his birth certificate and passport, a few expensive necklaces. It's not much, but it could get him going if he left here."
"You know, now that you mention taking some of his most important stuff, that's probably the exact reason Choi thinks Yoongi is on the run," mused Jimin thoughtfully.
"Maybe," said Hoseok with a shrug. "Either way, Yoongi has a few personal items and there's no need to put himself or anyone else at risk by going back to his house."
"The rest of us missed the first portion of the conversation, we all turned up when you two started discussing if anyone else knew who he was," started Jin as he rested his arms on the table in front of him. "But Joonie said that Yoongi himself did admit to being Suga. Is that right?"
"Yeah. I confronted him with the facts and he eventually confirmed my suspicions," he said with a couple of slow nods.
"So, you've obviously had a change in heart?" Jin said, eyebrows furrowed. "Because at first you were adamant that this would be a simple ransom. And now you've essentially started to talk with him about the prospect of him staying here with us."
"I have. The gut feeling I had yesterday really did come to fruition today. And I mean, if any of you have any objection, then I won't let him stay. I just wanted to gauge if he was interested in being given sanctuary first before anything. Which he does," nodded Hoseok as he slowly looked around at his five friends. "Famous underground rapper or not, he is still the son of Choi. So it comes down to whether or not we can trust him."
"And what does your gut say?" quietly asked Taehyung.
"It says we can trust him," truthfully answered Hoseok.
"I trust your gut. Always have, always will," softly smiled Taehyung.
"Me too," nodded Jungkook, also with a soft smile upon his face.
Slowly, all five boys nodded their heads in agreement. Hoseok smiled as he looked at each of them individually. He tried to conclude if they only agreed because the others were or if they honestly really were fine with the decision. Knowing them as well as he did, he could tell they wholeheartedly supported Hoseok's change of heart individually. There was not a single ounce of doubt within their eyes or faces.
"What does this mean moving forward then? What happens now?" asked Jimin as he frowned thoughtfully.
"That part, I haven't quite figured out. I was going to wait until I spoke with you guys," Hoseok said with a tired chuckle as both his hands ran down his face.
"Maybe start by getting himself to prove his willingness by helping me out?" suggested Namjoon with hope in his eyes.
A lighthearted chuckle left Hoseok at the relentless plea from Namjoon. It had been constant since they had all got back from the mission the day prior. Had Hoseok seen the amount of work involved decoding the emails and other files? Not yet. But he had paid attention to the ever growing stack of notes that Namjoon had been tirelessly working on. And for the other male to complain as much as he was, it truly was a sign he was in over his head.
"How about we take a pause on that," said Hoseok and shot an understanding smile at the silver haired male. "The boy hasn't had anything to eat for 24 hours. I know you want to get some help but we aren't that cruel, are we? Let me get him some food, a change of clothes might help him feel better, maybe let him freshen up a bit, and then if he doesn't want to rest properly I will bring him in here to assist you."
"Sounds like a plan," nodded Namjoon with a soft smile.
"I don't think there's any leftovers from lunch. And they would have only just started prep for dinner now. How about I go make something quickly for him?" Jin suggested as he sat up straighter.
"Wait Hyung, I'm hungry too," pouted Jungkook with wide doe eyes.
"Yeah me too," softly added Taehyung, both him and Jimin put on their best puppy dog eyes they could muster.
"Could you find an ounce of kindness in that cold heart of yours to maybe make us some food too, Hyung? Pretty please with the yummiest cherry on top?" pleaded Jimin.
"Fine, I'll make something for us all," huffed Jin while he rolled his eyes. As he stood up, he pointed towards the youngest three across from him. "Stay out of trouble or I'm giving your portions to the starving child."
Simultaneously, three gasps rung throughout the quiet room. Hoseok looked at the youngest three who all sported looks of hurt. He found himself amused at their antics. It was never a dull moment with the constant friendly banter amongst the small group, something he always treasured. The funny thing was, the threat Jin had made would be upheld if any of the three got into trouble. But with how serious they took their food, Hoseok knew they would be on their best behaviour.
"We promise we'll stay right here like the good little boys we are," Taehyung promised, a glimmer in both of his eyes.
"Joon-ah, come with me. I'm pulling the concerned partner card. I bet you haven't been staying hydrated up here, hmmm?" hummed Jin as he motioned for the other to follow him.
"I would tell you the truth, but I'd only be dobbing myself in during the process," said Hoseok as he watched a sheepish Namjoon leave behind a determined Jin.
The room was once again plunged into silence as the door was shut behind the parent duo. Hoseok had no doubt that Jin had only taken Namjoon with him so that he could fuss over him and force him to have a much needed break. It was only as he closed his eyes and rubbed at his temple for relief that he realised just how much time had already passed since their early morning meeting. Namjoon wasn't the only one overdue for a breather from all their work.
"Since we sort of have a plan in place, are you going to go and let him out now?" prompted Jimin when Hoseok remained quiet.
"Yeah," said Hoseok before he let out a deep sigh. "Yeah I'll do that now. Do Joon-ah a favour and bring everything he took into the surveillance room back in here? I'd rather he didn't leave that stuff laying around without his presence."
"Will do boss," Jungkook said with a salute.
Having no further reason to delay the inevitable, Hoseok pushed himself out of the chair and left the three youngest to themselves. He headed back towards the familiar room, one he had found himself in regularly the last few days. Although by the sounds of it, that was all about to change with the sanctuary he had gained permission to grant the other male.
