The Accident

Here we go!

ContestOfficial

I was still shaking as I was driving down the quiet street. Maybe I shouldn't be driving in this condition. Why was I shaking this badly?

I pulled up to the house. Thomas South's house was right there in front of me.

There has been a terrible accident. A terrible accident that a 17 year old boy shouldn't have gone through. He shouldn't be a victim to this. He was a close friend of mine. We have been best friends ever since we were three years old. He was a good person. He was a happy boy that would smile and wave at everyone down the halls of school. A good student who turns in everyone on time or early and show the teachers respect. He was a good person who would do charity work just for the fun of it. He was a good example of what a single child should act instead of being a spoiled rotten brat.

With a shaky hand I turned off my car. Tears were holding my vision hostage.

"Please don't let it be real." I muttered.

Then I got out of the car and walked up to the door steps. I looked at the door. Should I knock? Ring the doorbell? Just walk right in?

None of his parents were home. I knew that flat on. His father was a CEO of a huge company and getting off work for his son wasn't going to be easy, not like he cares. Out of the parents...his mother was the only one that cared. The father, from stories that I hear, didn't want any children but one night happened and Thomas came to be. The father couldn't do anything about it...only to basically ignore his son.

The mother, I knew would try her hardest to be there but life gets in the way. She is a nurse and it's hard to get out of work for that. I heard that some people were actually being nice and taking her shifts but she can't get lucky all the time. Today was one of those days. I kinda wanted it to be us to...I had to see if it was true.

I was still at the door though. I didn't know what to do. The only one in there had to be Thomas...

I sigh as I just decided to reach for the door nod and slowly opened the door. I poke my head in first as I gave a soft knock, "Thomas? Thomas it's me...Tamera. I'm...I'm coming in."

There was no answer.

I just walked in more of the house. It was a really nice house. Nice and fancy and so clean. I closed the door, "T-Thomas?" I asked in a small vioce.

Of course he couldn't hear me! I was as quiet as a mouse! I just didn't want Thomas to hear my cracked voice. I swallowed hard, "Get it together, Tamera. Get it together."

Then I heard a sound from the kitchen area. I started to head over there, "Thomas?"

Then I slowly opened the door, only to poke in my head. That was as far as I could go. Thomas was there and it was true.

"The island...other...counters..." Thomas muttered as moved his stick around, trying to move around the kitchen and breakfast area.

I covered my mouth as tears flooded in my eyes again. "Oh Thomas..."

It was true...Thomas was blind now.

That car accident really did the job. He was just driving down the main road...then a drunk driver just came around and slam into Thomas's car head on. Thomas's front window shattered. The broken glass came flying in the air and got into his eyes, completely blinding him.

There were still cuts from the glass around his face, mostly near his clear eyes. They used to be this pretty green but now...they were this misty white color.

He was moving towards the breakfast area. It was a small table where you just eat breakfast. The real dining room must have been in another room. He was trying to move around by using the stick to help him not run into things. Of course that doesn't always help. His foot caught a leg of the chair and he fell to the ground.

I yelp a little as he fell to the ground. Thomas grunted as he hit the ground, "Chair." His stick rolled away from him.

Then Thomas felt around to help him up to his feet. He grabbed the table cloth and he pulled it too hard and he just slipped again and the glass vase of flowers. The vase fell on the ground, shattering and creating a mess of broken glass, flowers, and water.

Thomas this time stayed on the floor. He cursed under his breath as he pulled his knees close to his chest and his elbows on his knees. He grabbed his hair as he brought his head close to his knees. He started to cry.

I couldn't handle this anymore. This was too much. I...I couldn't see him like this. I looked back at the door. This was my chance. Then I looked back at Thomas. He was my friend and he needed help...I don't care how much this hurts.

So I came all the way in the room, "Thomas?"

Thomas stopped crying at the sound of my voice. He slowly raised his head, tears streaming down his face, "Tamera?"

"Y-yeah."

Thomas reached up and wipes the tears off of his face, well tried to.

"Thomas it's okay. I understand..." I replied, holding my trembling hands in front of me. Then I look to the side and I could see Thomas's stick. I figure I could help him...

I headed over and I grabbed his stick and I went up to him. He was still on the floor. I bent down and held out his stick close to him, "Here is your...stick thing."

Thomas gave a faint smile as he reached out until he touched my hand. Then he moved his hand to the stick, "Thanks." Then he placed the stick next to him. That is when I sat down, next to him, "So..uh...are you okay? I mean...uh..."

"I know what you mean. I'm fine...mostly." Thomas replied.

I lowered my head, I couldn't look at his face...I couldn't.

"Tamera...can you do me a favor?" Thomas asked.

"O-Of course." I replied.

"I really hate to ask this...Um...can you clean up the vase I broke?"

"Of course."

I got up and I headed to the mess. I grabbed the flowers and placed them on the table. Then I started to clean up the water and glass.

"Why did you come?" Thomas asked me as I was still cleaning.

I paused, "I...I just want to see..."

"If it was really true?"

I stopped for a moment, "To see if you were okay."

"Well it doesn't matter anyways."

"So you are not okay..."

"You know me better than anyone else, Tamera."

"You fake it." I muttered. Then I look at him, "Thomas, everything will be okay..."

"No! Everything is not okay!" He tighten his fists on his knees, "I'm blind! I can't see anything! I'm just a useless piece of crap!"

"Thomas don't say that..."

"It's true and you know it. That is why you are here...for pity."

"I'm here as a friend, Thomas."

"No you are here to see if the rumors are true."

"I didn't mean it like that..."

"But you did." He growled bitterly.

I looked at him. It was getting harder and harder to keep those tears in my eyes. Well he wouldn't see if I was crying but I had to be strong in this. He was hurt.

"Thomas, I'm your best friend!"

Thomas scoffed, "I thought you were."

I was hurt by this, "I am, Thomas. Why do you doubt that?"

Thomas paused for a moment. Then he just shook his head.

"If I wasn't your best friend then I wouldn't be here. Thomas I care a lot about you. I'm not going to let this get in the way." At this point I have finish cleaning up the mess. Then I went over and sat in front of Thomas.

"It's going to get in the way! It's in the way of everything! I-I can't do anything I want anymore! I-I can't be who I am..." Tears started to stream down his face, "I can't see anything...I can't see you."

I just watched him cry as he tried to talk, "I can't see your smile...I can't see how excited you get when a new episode of your favorite T-show comes...I can't see you play volley ball...I can't see you flip off the insane drivers cut you off..." He gave a pity laugh.

That set the rivers on flowing on my own face. Then I looked up at him. "Do you remember what I look like?"

"Of course."

I then reached and grabbed his hands and pulled them up to my face, "Then you can see it." Thomas didn't do anything for the moment but then I felt his moved his hands. He felt my face. I closed my eyes as he moved his hands. He carefully ran them against my cheeks and forehead, feeling all of my features. Then he ran his fingers through my blond hair.

Then his thumbs went to my lips as he felt them but he stopped. That is when I opened my eyes. We just froze there. My heart was having this jumping feeling. Then without warning Thomas leaned in and kissed me.

My eyes widen as his soft lips pressed against mine.

Thomas was kissing me. We were best friends ever since we were three years old. Through our ups and downs we were always there for each other, we knew everything...I didn't know that he liked me...Maybe he wasn't doing this because he liked me...he was just hurt and just needed for comfort...I don't know...This was just a shock surprise to me and my mind just went blank.

Then Thomas pulled back, "I-I'm so sorry...I-I don't know what gotten into me..."

I wrapped my arms around his neck and kissed him back. He was surprised about this but he kissed me back. I then straddled over him on his lap as he wrapped his arms around my waist as we started to make out, fighting over who won dominance.

Then we separated, panting. I looked into his misty eyes, knowing this was wrong. "Thomas...we...we are just upset...We are just friends....."

Thomas lowered his head, "O-Of course...We are just upset."

I sigh as I run my fingers gently through his soft brown hair, "But...From what you were saying...about me...was that true?"

"I do enjoy the sight of you. That was my thoughts before...the accident. Like I enjoy the sunsets...the forest...and Mr. Hop's crazy dance..."

We both laughed at that. His dance was pretty entertaining to watch.

Then Thomas's smile faded, "My mother's smile...the color blue...watching Harry Potter...a garden full or roses and what not...helping people...seeing people smile...the joy in people's eyes..."

"Thomas stop."

"It's true though, Tamera. I can't see them anymore. What am I going to do now? I can't even walk around my house without breaking something! I'm just useless..."

"No you're not, Thomas. You can still help people."

"Oh yeah? How? I can't serve them because I can't see them. I can't see the smiles on their faces."

"You don't have to see it to know it's there, Thomas."

"But..."

"You just got to use to it, Thomas. I know it's hard and it isn't far...It's just how it is..." I spoke softly, "I'm sorry this happened to you. I wouldn't want this to happen. I would want you to do what you want and make people happy. That is what you were. Now this is a new you. You always found ways to get out of this...You can found ways to go around this. Sure you can't do somethings but that doesn't stop you from other things. I don't want you to stop being whoever you are just because you lost your sight."

"You got ideas?"

I thought about it, "Well...you can still read to the kids at the library."

"How?"

"Memorize the book."

Thomas hummed.

"You are good at memorizing things. It won't be that hard...I'll read them out loud for you so you can memorize it. You could also give food to the homeless...I can drive you and help you cook. Ooo! You can write book for the blind."

"Huh?"

"You know with the dots thing called braille. You can do that to write books to make it extra special and personal. That will help blind people. Since you will know all of that."

Thomas sighs, "That sounds all nice, Tamera..."

"But? Why is there a but in there?"

"Nobody will be there to help me."

"I'm here to help you."

"For now."

"What do you mean for now?"

"We are just friends, Tamera. You said it yourself. We are in our senior year of school is almost over. You'll go one college and I'll go to another. You won't be there to help me..." Then Thomas stopped for the moment with a smirk.

"What?" I asked.

"Unless we aren't just friends."

My cheeks redden a little, "I-It was just a kiss, Thomas."

"Then why are you still on top of me and running your fingers through my hair?"

My cheeks instantly went into a deep red, "uhhh..."

"I'm blind, Tamera. I haven't lose my sense of touch."

I instantly got off of him, "Shut up! I wish you lost this sense of crude humor you have."

Thomas chuckled as he felt around for his stick. In seconds he found it and grabbed it.

"Need help getting up?" I asked, my cheeks were still red.

"I got it." Thomas replied as he got up to his feet.

I then reached out for his hand and gently squeezed it, "We are going to do this, Thomas. Don't you worry. You won't be alone this time."

"I know I won't." Thomas squeezed my hand back.
