Number One Surgeon
I am not a Doctor or a surgeon so this isn't 100% true...because i'm unsure exactly what they do but i tried to be as close as i can. FYI. Just enjoy! :) Thanks! Now to the Contest entry!
My name is Tyler Carlson, or should I say Doctor Tyler Carlson, not to brag or anything but its important. I'm a top surgeon at the Northwest Hospital, in fact....the only girl surgeon in the hospital. There are female nurses and secretaries and such but nobody is a female surgeon. Only me. Since I'm the only girl, the men...aren't too nice about me. Trying to take all of the work for themselves. Saving people's lives isn't a woman's job, it's a man's job is what they say.
Well I'm going to prove that wrong.
"How is your day Sam?" I asked my best friend.
She sigh, "Busy, as always."
She was a secretory of the E.R.
Suddenly some of the other surgeons just ran past us to quickly head to surgery. Sam sigh, "I hate is how they take everything from you. You are the world's greatest surgeon! That is why you are here." Sam replied.
"I know."
"But? Come on Tyler, there has to be a but there."
"There is no but there." I shrugged.
"Huh? Tyler, what are you planning? I know that tone of voice!"
I chuckled, "Oh you'll see. I'm right with you, I'm sick and tired of these men pushing me around. Well now...I'm pushing them around."
"Ooo, I'm liking this."
Roy Mark came up to the desk, "Is there a free surgeon? I need a heart surgeon for this man name Thomas Buckley."
I raise my hand, "Right here!"
Roy looks at me and laughed, "I'm looking for a surgeon, not a nurse sister."
I rolled my eyes, "I am a surgeon."
"A heart surgeon?"
"Heart, brain, bone, regular, and much more."
He didn't believe me, "Unlikely."
"I had a lot of free time. Graduate high school at age 16 with straight A+s. Then went to Yale and got all of those degrees by my 25th birthday, as I made it to be the top of all of my classes and that is why I'm here dear Roy." I took the papers from his hands, "And you are a nurse? Really? Unlikely because you don't know a surgeon when they are right in front of you."
Roy's cheeks warm with embarrassment, "I-I'm..."
"Doesn't matter. Just where is the room?"
After the surgery, I went to my friend again, "So? How was it?"
I smiled, "Perfect as always."
"Dude, I got to say. How you burned Roy like that. Man, you are on fire."
I shrug, "Hey, you just got to be strong and bold to get these short minded men to listen."
She gave me a high five, "You rock girlfriend."
"I know."
Then Frank West came up, "Tyler, I head you did a heart surgery."
"Yes I did." I smiled.
"Why in the world would you do that!? You aren't a heart surgeon!" He shouted.
"Um, yes I am."
"No you are not! You are a nurse!"
I rolled my eyes, "Why do you people think that!? I'm not a low class nurse! I'm a high call surgeon! Get that through you tiny little brain!"
"There are no female surgeons at this hospital! This is a high class hospital and there are no high class females here!"
I took a step closer to him, hands on my hips, "Just because I'm a female doesn't mean anything. Have you talked to the now recovering man?"
"Of course and..."
"Well that is a lie. He just got out of surgery and is still asleep for another 30 minutes to make sure he is stable."
Frank just looked at me. I smirked, "I know everything about that man. He needed a simple heart procedure that any first class could do. One of my easier works but I'll do whatever to save a life here and to make a world a better place. Did you know that he is 60? Has a very sweet wife and three kids? In fact one of his kids is at a nearby hospital having a kid with her husband? They are a lovely family. I called the husband to let him know that they don't need to worry for his father in law."
"I-"
"Could you do that Doc?"
Frank tighten his jaw, "You have no rights in talking to me like that!"
"I do have the rights to talk about my job. Maybe even save you some time in reading my report. I know how men don't like to read like my badge." I raise my badge that flatly tells I was a surgeon.
I looked at it, "Strange how words work or how you are a surgeon. How I know? I read your badge. Do I need to speak slower for you so you can understand?"
He slap my hand away and just stormed off. Sam laughed, "Oh that was priceless! You are making a stand for all of us females around here Tyler!"
I smiled, "Of course."
"These males think they are better than the rest of us! How dare they! You are only hope Tyler."
"Don't worry. I won't let you down."
After that, I made sure that I was notice and I wasn't a low class nurse. Within a week time, I had helped a little girl who broke her arm, a lung transplant, and removed two gallbladders. I was sure putting myself on the map of the hospital. The funny thing is, at the end of the week, a woman needing a liver surgery actually requested me.
I was with Sam when she came up to the desk, "I'm here for my liver surgery appointment."
"Alright, and your name is?"
"Lauren Smith."
Sam type in, "You are right in time but I got some bad news. Your surgeon isn't here today. He went home sick earlier today. Can we move your appointment or get you a different surgeon?"
"I need to get this done today. I've been getting so sick and...I'll just get a different surgeon. Hum...I heard from my friend that there was this female surgeon operated on her father and she was amazing. I would like her."
"Oh that would not be necessary." Frank just came up. He gave this cold look at me but quickly turn it to a smile to Lauren and shook hands with her, "Doctor Frank West. I was just over hearing you and I would love to operate you. I'm head surgeon here."
I rolled my eyes.
"Oh, thanks but no."
My eyebrows perked up.
"No?" Frank questioned, also shocked.
"My friend's father is alive because of her. I want her."
"But I-"
"Excuse me Doctor West." I pushed Frank aside, "Let the real doctor take over." I then smiled at Lauren, "Hi, I'm Doctor Tyler Carlson. I'm the surgeon you were talking about."
"It's a pleasure to meet you!"
"Now let's get you ready," I replied. Before I actually started the questioning to make sure she was ready for surgery, I smirked at Frank. Frank just glared at me and shook his head in disgust as he stormed off.
That really exploded in Frank's face. It was sweet!
I was slowly making my way to prove that I wasn't just nothing and I could do anything. Just like with any other female at the hospital.
There was this one day that will change everything about that.
There was this young child. His name was Jamie Hall. He was only 6 years old with a serious condition. A tumor have already taken half of his small brain that was causing serious issues that will damage the ability to grow and develop like a normal kid.
I didn't know about it at first.
"Hey Sam, what's going on?" I notice that it was extra busy today.
"Well everything is backed up because our top other surgeons are trying to save a little boy."
"Oh. What's going on with the child?"
"A large tumor."
"Oh man. At what age?"
"6."
"That's horrible!"
"I know. He's going to be in surgery right now."
"What room? Sam I need to be there. We both know it."
Sam quickly looked on the computer, "Room 304."
"Alright." I then race to the room to only be greeted by Frank, "What are you doing here?" He scowled at me.
"I'm here to save a boy's life, any problem with that?"
"yes."
"Wow, you want a boy to die. How cruel Frank."
"That is not what I mean! Bloody slut."
I place my hands on my hips, "Listen his ditch water. I don't care what you think but I'm not going to let a piece of trash get in my way of a boy's life! His life is at hand and I'm going to make sure he gets a chance!" As I was shouting at him I was forcing him back against a wall. His back finally hit the wall.
"I don't know what your problem is against me but I really don't care. I'm going to save this boy's life with or without you. I may be just a girl but I can do whatever you can do. If that is your problem, than grow up! This isn't elementary school anymore! Grow up! Now excuse me, I have a boy to save." I push him to the side so I can get to the door.
Washing my hands and got my surgery clothes on I headed in.
"Why is she here?" One of the male nurses asked.
"To save a boy's life. Come on people. That is why we are here aren't we?!" I snapped.
Then Frank just came in, all dressed up too, "Tyler, I'm handling this. You can assist but I'm doing this! Parent's orders!"
I tighten my jaw, "Fine. Parent's orders."
Then the boy came in. He was so little and young. Such a sweet boy with brown hair and pale skin.
"He's under."
"Okay. Let's do this quickly and gently as possible. We don't want to lose this boy." Frank ordered. Everyone agree. We had to buzz off the soft hair on the boy's head to get to his skull. "Alright. Now let's get that tumor out of this boy."
Frank started to cut the child to get to his brain so we can remove the tumor. For this to work, we needed to get rid of ¾ of the child's brain. Luckily he was so young that the brain could grow again in time. He might be slower than the rest of the kids but he would be normal.
"Systems stable." The nurse informed.
"Okay." Frank muttered as he continue his work. Suddenly the heart rate just went to the extreme and the boy started to shake.
He was having a sesure. Everyone was at a panic to lower the boy's heart rate and to calm him down. I was quick enough and grabbed a needle and injected to the boy. Seconds later the boy calmed down.
"What did you do?" Frank snapped.
"Something to calm him down! I think I need to inject you some more! Now if you are smart enough, you can't do a normal procedure on the boy! It's a very sensitive tumor to a weak child!"
"You think you can do it better!"
"Heck yeah. Move over!"
I got Frank off to the side. I then started to work on the boy. I needed to use a different way of doing this. The tumor was too big and will crush the rest of the boy's brain and kill him. It was attacking him, eating and crushing the rest of the brain cells. By doing this, you have to go in than out. Can't go through the outside.
It's kind of like a clinging child. You can't pull the child off from the outside, they will just hold on tighter. If you get under them, between the child and the leg of the person, you are able to separate them. That is what you need to do here.
I started to get between the tumor and the rest of the brain. Everything was running smoothly. "Give me some tweezers." I ordered.
Frank glared at me. I glared at him back, "NOW!"
Frank growled as he hand me what I needed. I then finish separating the tumor and the brain.
"Heart rate is slowly increasing."
"Tyler you need to hurry it up. We have to close up the boy or we'll lose him." Frank muttered.
"I know. Almost there." I muttered as I continue with my work.
"Heart rate is still increasing. Blood pressure..."
"I know! Just shut up will you?" I snapped. Then going back to my work, "I'm not going to lose you. I'm not going to lose you Jamie."
Starting to get a little faster to remove the tumor. I got a part of it out, the other half was attach to the brain.
"Tyler." Frank muttered.
"Almost! Hold him up for just a bit long! Almost got it out!" I snapped.
"Tyler we can't..."
"Do your job Frank! Do what you went to school for!"
Frank tighten his jaw as he face the other nurses, "Do what you can, stable him as close as you can. Just got to hold him for a bit longer."
I went in to get the tumor to detach to the brain. It was stubborn and far back.
"Tyler, we can't hold him much longer. We need to close him now or we'll lose him." Frank informed.
"Just wait. Almost there."
"We're losing him."
"I got it!" I announce as I got the tumor out, "Frank!"
Frank then jumped in to help stitched up the young child. Together we pulled it together. Actually going to the Jamie's parents, who was worried to death. They saw us coming and stood up. The father was holding his shaking and teary wife.
I smiled, "He's doing perfectly fine."
The mother gave the hugest sigh of relief, "Oh my heavens! Thank you! Thank you!" She gave me a hug. I hug her back, "It's my job to save people, of course."
"He's recovering, now. You can see him, but he will still be asleep." Frank informed, "And it will take time to recover. We do not exactly know what he could do with most of his brain gone but in time, within years, he would be like a normal little boy with just a few slow issues."
The father nod, "Of course. Thank you Doctor."
"Actually, thank her." Frank looked at me with a smile.
The father looked at me and smile, "Thank you for saving my son."
We showed them where Jamie was resting. Frank and I watch through the window of the door of the happy family.
"What a blessing." Frank muttered.
"That is why I do my job."
Frank then turn and face me, "Tyler, look, I'm sorry how I acted towards you. I shouldn't have judged you. You can do amazing things."
"Ah, so you finally could read now?"
Frank gave a small smile, "Heh, funny."
Then Frank lean again they wall, right next to me, "So Tyler, I've been thinking. Usually after a huge job like this we all head out to get some drinks."
"I don't drink. Do you know what alcohol does to you?"
"Fair enough." Then he got close to me, "Maybe a dinner?"
"A dinner? Everyone?"
"I was more thinking of you and me."
"Oh?"
"So what do you like? Chinese? Fancy? Regular fast food?"
"Now why would I go on a date on you?"
"Oh so this is a date." He got closer with a wide charming smile. Really close. He got me against the wall and his arms by my head, trapping me in his charming mood.
"From your words."
"You are a smart, good. Of course I knew that. You went to school for most of your life and got the highest degrees of all of the surgeon jobs! I'm very fascinated in you."
"Oh?"
He got closer to my face, our lips nearly touching, "Yep. I was a jerk before. I know that, that is why I'm hoping you will give me a chance, Tyler."
I hummed. Frank lean in to kiss me.
Suddenly I grabbed his face and stopped him from kissing me. I smirked, "Oh Frank West, do you really think I'm that stupid to fall for you charm? I know who you are Frank West, I'm smart...remember? You are a play boy. Going after the good name woman that will make a good name for you too. Like you go for the girls with the rich name, gold-digger. Smart move, but I'm smarter." I shove him away and walked away.
"You'll regret this Tyler!" He shouted at me.
I smirked, "Not with you, gold-digger."
