Chapter Three
I stirred, opening my eyes slightly. Abbie was tossing around beside me.
"Abbie?"
She screamed, sitting bolt upright. "Laura, help!!"
I wrapped my arms around her tightly, stroking her hair.
"It's okay, you're fine. I'm here."
Her eyes opened. "Laura?"
"I'm here. Breathe, Abbie, breathe."
I held her as she shook.
"I think....I think I dreamt of the accident. I don't know," she sobbed.
"What happened? When you had the accident?" I asked tentatively, rubbing her back.
"I don't know. I can't remember," she replied, wiping her eyes. "My psychologist says I'm repressing the memories. I can't remember hardly anything from before. Only that I was in love."
I blinked. "You were in love?"
"Yeah, I know. Weird, right? I was only ten," she smiled.
I swallowed. "It's not weird. I used to be, too. Kind of."
"You were?"
"Yeah. But I haven't seen them for ages."
"Me neither. I don't even know who they are. Maybe they still remember me. Probably not."
"I don't think anyone could forget you, Abbie."
A nurse bustled into the small room, interrupting us. Abbie stood up, wiping her cheeks hastily.
"Good morning, girls. Miss Simmons is ready for you, Abbie."
She beamed at us.
"Oh, okay. I'll get my stuff," Abbie replied. She picked up a small folder and a notebook, and pulled on a cardigan.
"See you soon, Laura," she smiled at me.
"See you."
Soon after Abbie and the nurse left, the door opened again. Skylar peered in.
"Where's the other girl?"
"She's out," I replied.
"Oh. So we're alone then, are we?" She raised an eyebrow.
"I guess. Are you even allowed to be here, Skylar?"
She shook her head, bringing a finger to her lips with a cheeky grin. "Shhhh, don't tell anyone."
I rolled my eyes. She pulled up a chair next to me, and sat down, her elbows resting on her knees.
"So, I'm having a hard time figuring you out, sugar. Anything you wanna tell me?"
I shook my head. She narrowed her eyes, looking at me intently.
"Your friend tells me you have a crush on my brother. That true?"
"Uh, no. Emma likes to mess around. He's pretty nice. But he's not really my type."
She smirked. "Cool. So what is your type then?" She leaned closer, tucking her hair behind her ears.
My heart started beating faster. "Blonde."
"Like me."
"I meant brunette."
"My natural hair colour, then."
"For god's sake. Men."
"You sure about that?"
I looked down. "Honestly, not really."
She smiled. "It's okay. I won't tell anyone."
"Thanks," I replied gratefully.
She crossed her legs. "Do you like that girl?"
"Who? Abbie?"
"Yeah."
"No. She's just a friend." I bit my lip.
"Sure. I believe you," she smirked.
I laughed. "It's true! I only met her yesterday. I think."
"You only met me yesterday too."
"Yeah, well, you're just a friend too, Skylar."
"Yeah right."
"Skylar."
"Friends with benefits?"
"Friends."
She looked away. "I'll give you time, honey. But not long."
I nodded, biting my lip.
"How long are you in hospital for?" I asked, trying to change the subject.
"Just a couple more days. My ankle is only strained and my head will heal."
"Oh, okay."
"But I'll come visit you, baby," she smirked. "If that was what you were worried about."
I shook my head, blushing, and she laughed at me.
Just then Emma walked into the room.
"Hey Laura! Oh! Who are you? I swear I recognise you from somewhere..."
Skylar turned to her quickly. "Hey there. I'm Skylar, Laura's....friend," she finished, glancing at me.
I rolled my eyes. "Emma, this is Daniel's sister."
"Oooh," Emma said excitedly, looking at me. "Daniel?"
"You know I don't like him," I replied wearily.
Skylar hid a smile. "Yeah, he's not her type, apparently."
"Well, what is your type then?" Emma huffed. "You don't like any of the guys in our year."
"Maybe she's already going out with someone," Skylar smirked.
Emma's eyes widened. "What? Laura, who are you going out with?! Tell me!"
"No one, Emma," I sighed.
"Not yet," murmured Skylar under her breath.
"Huh?" Emma frowned.
Skylar glanced at me. "Nothing."
The door swung open and Abbie came back in. Her eyes were red and her hands were shaking.
Skylar was the first to speak.
"You okay, hun?"
She nodded, and went over to her bed. "Just a little tired."
We sat in silence for a while, until Abbie spoke again.
"Laura, the nurse is coming in a minute to take out your drip."
"Oh, okay," I replied.
"We should probably go then," said Emma nervously.
Skylar stood up. "Bye then, Laura."
"Bye," I smiled.
Emma waved as Skylar opened the door for her, and they both left.
"You okay, Abbie?" I asked.
She sighed. "Just a bad session, that's all. I don't really want to talk about it. Sorry."
"Oh, okay," I replied. I took my phone out and checked my Instagram. I had a friend request from _skylerhaden_117.
I smiled to myself and accepted. She sent me a smiley emoji and a heart.
There was a knock on the door and a nurse came in.
"Hiya, Laura. It's time to take that drip out," she told me cheerily.
"Okay," I replied.
She took out a pair of disposable gloves and pulled them on.
"This won't hurt a bit," she smiled. I narrowed my eyes.
She ripped off the tape around the drip and then quickly pulled the needle out of my arm. I winced. Holding a piece of gauze to my arm, she checked the needle and then placed it in the sharp objects bin.
"Was that okay?" she asked, taking the bag off the hook.
I nodded. "Thanks."
"You'll have to stay in for a while so your leg can heal," she reminded me as I sat up.
"Okay. When is it going to be properly cast?"
"This afternoon, I think," she replied.
Abbie shut her book and stood up. "Excuse me, please can I go to the canteen?"
"Yes, of course," the nurse replied. "I'll take you."
She hurried out, momentarily pausing at the door. "Do you want anything, Laura?"
"Nah, I'm good, thanks."
"Okay." She rushed out, not making eye contact with me. I frowned. What was up with her?
I rubbed my arm where the drip had been. It was starting to bruise. My phone vibrated. I picked it up - it was a message from Skylar.
_skylarhaden_117: hey, whats up? :)
I smiled.
l_james332: Not much. Laying in bed contemplating life. My drip got taken out...
_skylarhaden_117: yay! thats good news right?
l_james332: Yeah, I guess. I'm still going to be in for a while though, because of my leg.
_skylarhaden_117: right, yeah. need sum cheering up?
l_james332: Sure :)
She sent me a selfie.
_skylarhaden_117: lmao they finally let me out of that shitty hospital gown
I smiled. She looked really hot, to be fair.
l_james332: I like your top :)
_skylarhaden_117: yeah? ;)
l_james332: Um, yeah. It's pretty.
_skylarhaden_117: sure
l_james332: Why do you have so many tattoos? I'm not judging. Just asking.
_skylarhaden_117: idk i guess i just like them
l_james332: I like them :)
_skylarhaden_117: u use a lot of smiley faces
l_james332: Do I?

l_james332: Oh, okay!

l_james332: Goodbye :)
I turned my phone off as the nurse came into the room.
"Hi honey! Hey, you're blushing! Texting our boyfriend, are we?"
I laughed nervously. "Sort of."
She smiled. "Come on then. I'll take you to get your leg plastered."
