Chapter Twenty.
A few days later, whilst Katherine was out with Pearl and Anna, Rayna found herself walking through the Salvatore gardens with the brothers and their father.
"I need to speak with the three of you." Guiseppe said, joining his hands behind his back.
"What is it father?" Stefan asked.
Guiseppe sighed. "As descendants of the Founding Families, they'll want to know they can count on you."
Rayna had a feeling that this was about what she and Guiseppe had spoken about the other day.
"Of course they can. Is there any doubt?" Stefan furrowed his eyebrows.
"I'm not sure your brother Damon understands the importance of duty." Guiseppe raised an eyebrow.
Rayna looked to Damon, sighing as she gave him a sympathetic look.
"Damon left the Confederacy on principle." Stefan argued. "It was his choice and should be respected."
"You'll forgive me if I have trouble respecting a deserter." Guiseppe grumbled.
Damon breathed a humourless chuckle. "Well, I never asked for your respect."
Guiseppe stopped in his tracks to face Damon.
"Good for you, Damon. Because all I have is disappointment." He said.
Rayna and Stefan glanced at each other, deciding which one of them would break the tension.
"You said the town is in trouble?" Stefan questioned.
Guiseppe snapped out of his stare-off with the older brother.
"There's been too many deaths. It is time to fight back and stop these killers." The father said, gravely.
Rayna raised an eyebrow.
"Killers? What are you talking about?" Stefan asked.
"We live amongst Demons." Guiseppe sighed.
"You're being cryptic now, father. Why don't you just say the word?" Damon huffed.
Guiseppe hesitated. "Vampires. They exist. And they live amongst us. But we have a plan to kill them and you're going to help us."
Damon and Rayna glanced at each other briefly.
"Why did you want me here for this conversation, Mr Salvatore?" The Heretic asked.
"I've seen you fence and shoot with my sons. It may not be proper, but I have convinced the Founding Families that you would be a great asset to the fight against these monsters." Guiseppe replied.
Rayna nodded, understandingly.
"Thank you, sir." She curtsied.
Almost a week had passed since the conversation between Rayna and the Salvatore family.
Rayna was entertaining Damon by listing the perks of Vampirism, but her mind resided elsewhere.
She heard Stefan walk into his father's study and decided to listen in, hushing Damon.
"What is it?" Damon asked.
"The main perk of being a Vampire, in my opinion. We can hear everything." Rayna chuckled, tucking a loose bit of hair behind her ear.
"Still. I will carry the real secrets with me-"
"To your grave." She heard Stefan interrupt his father.
"And a full grave it will be." Guiseppe replied. "Now, speaking of troubled minds, what's on your's?"
"I have concerns about your plans for the Vampires." Stefan sighed.
"No, no, no." Rayna mumbled.
"What is it?" Damon asked.
"Stefan's causing trouble." She replied, focusing more on the conversation downstairs.
"We are making the assumption that all Vampires are as evil as they've been characterised, but what if that's not true?" Stefan questioned.
"Do you have any evidence to the contrary? Do you know of any Vampires?" Guiseppe sounded rather grave.
"What's going on?" Damon asked.
"Shh." Rayna hushed, waving her hand.
"Stefan... These creatures are of the darkest parts of Hell. They have the ability to control your mind, seduce your spirit. They are deadly. They must be destroyed." Guiseppe told the younger brother.
"What's going on, Rayna?" Damon asked, placing a hand on her's, the soft sheets of the bed pooling around them.
"We're in the clear, for now. I don't think your father suspected anything." Rayna sighed, leaning back, falling back onto Damon's bed.
A few minutes later, the pair heard Stefan come up the stairs and head for Katherine's room, but decided to blissfully ignore it.
Stefan knocked and entered Katherine's room, where he saw her at her vanity, examining a beautiful jewelled necklace.
"What is that?" He asked, coming closer.
"A gift." She replied, placing it down in front of her.
"From Damon?" Stefan raised an eyebrow.
"From Emily, actually. When will you stop worrying about Damon?" Katherine asked, getting up and approaching the younger brother as she wrapped a shawl around her shoulders.
"I want you all to myself." Stefan gave a half smile.
"Just as Damon wants me. But I'm the one who gets to make all the rules." Katherine said matter-of-factly.
"And why is that?" Stefan sighed.
Katherine looked at him as though it were obvious.
"Because I'm spoiled." She chuckled.
"Yes you are." Stefan agreed.
Katherine moved closer to the younger brother before pushing him onto her bed.
"And selfish." She continued as she straddled him.
"And because I can do this." She kissed up Stefan's chest, making him release a satisfied sigh as he lent his head back on her bed.
She made her way up to his neck.
"And this." She whispered.
Stefan looked up at her as her eyes went red and she revealed her fangs.
Before he could protest, she bit into him.
He groaned quite loudly, grabbing Rayna's attention in the other room.
"What is it?" Damon asked.
Rayna sighed, irritated. "Your brother and Katherine are blood sharing."
She was about to block out the sounds, but then she heard Katherine choke and gasp for air.
"What? What?" Stefan began to panic.
"Vervain." Katherine gasped out, falling off the bed, onto the floor.
"What?" Stefan sat up.
He jumped off the bed and crawled to her, grabbing her face in his hands, calling her name over and over.
Rayna heard several pairs of footsteps storm up the stairs.
She got up and opened Damon's bedroom door to see what was going on, Damon following shortly after.
"Go get the Sheriff, tell him we have a Vampire." Guiseppe told his youngest son.
"What? No!" Stefan cried.
"Do as I say, son! Nothing that you feel for her is real. She's a Vampire, Stefan. A monster! I fed you Vervain hoping it would expose her." Guiseppe told him.
"How did you know?" Stefan sniffed.
"Your sympathy for their plight. I didn't raise my sons to be so weak." The father growled, throwing his son a shirt. "The Sheriff, now. Go quickly! Now, son!"
Stefan began to panic again, looking down at the weakened Katherine before exiting the room.
"Brother, don't you dare." Damon spat in a whisper, but Stefan ignored him.
"Let him go, Damon. He gets caught sympathising, so do you." Rayna sighed, leading him back into the bedroom.
