Chapter Sixteen.
"Oh, Good morning, sir. My name is Rayna. I was hoping to see Damon Salvatore?" Rayna greeted the middle-aged man who answered the door at the Salvatore home.
He looked her over rather judgementally, seeing Rayna's rather upper class dress.
"I'm Guiseppe Salvatore, his father. It's a pleasure to meet you Miss Rayna." He gave a warm smile.
"Is Damon home, Mr Salvatore?" Guiseppe looked annoyed, more than anything – clearly Damon wasn't the favourite child in the slightest.
He turned to a maid who happened to be passing behind him.
"Josette, go and fetch Damon, would you? He has a guest." He said.
"Yes, Mr Salvatore." She replied, scurrying up the stairs.
"Won't you come in, Miss Rayna." Guiseppe smiled, backing away from the door.
Something in Rayna's mind always felt rather satisfied whenever someone invited her into their home.
She stepped in, Damon's father closing the front door after her.
"Would you like a drink, Miss Rayna?" He asked.
"Please, Mr Salvatore." Rayna smiled.
He poured two glasses of Bourbon and handed her one.
She took a sip as he invited her to sit.
Just then, a rather confused looking Damon appeared in the doorway.
"Who is my guest, father?" He asked.
Rayna turned around, giving him a smile.
It took a moment for him to process who she was, but as soon as he remembered, a bright grin covered his face.
"Rayna!" He beamed.
"Hello Damon." Rayna replied, standing.
"How have you been? What have you been doing?" He asked all at once.
Rayna laughed. "Shall we go for a walk?"
Damon chuckled, looking down at his feet, bashfully.
"Yes, follow me." He said.
They walked around the grounds of the Salvatore property, catching up.
"So how come I never saw you again after that day in the field hospital?" Rayna asked.
Damon sighed. "I became rather busy, for that, I can't apologise enough. But now I am on leave."
Rayna just nodded.
"What did you do after I left?"
"Let's see... I finished my time in the hospital and then... I came here." She shrugged.
"You came straight here?" Damon asked.
Rayna nodded. "It didn't appear that you were going to uphold the last thing you said to me."
Damon gave her a slightly confused look, beckoning for Rayna to continue.
"That you'd like to see me again." She clarified.
Damon mentally slapped himself.
"Of course. And that remains true. So I'm glad you came."
They wondered the grounds several times over, getting to know each other and making small talk until they were interrupted by Damon's younger brother.
"Is this the younger brother I've heard so much about?" Rayna raised an eyebrow.
"Yes! Rayna, I'd like to introduce you to Stefan Salvatore, my beloved younger brother." Damon smiled.
Rayna raised her hand as Stefan smiled; taking it and placing a soft kiss on her skin.
"It's a pleasure, Miss Rayna. It's not often my brother meets a girl as refined and distinguished as you." Stefan smiled.
Rayna couldn't help but blush.
"Why thank you, Mr Salvatore. And I have to say, that quite surprises me. Your brother is positively charming." Rayna replied, earning herself a sincere smile from the older brother.
The brothers got to know Rayna rather well, despite the obvious, and vice versa.
As the months drew on, Rayna became rather attached.
She purchased a large house on the outskirts of town, by the local church.
By the time 1864 came around, everything was fine.
But then it all stopped... Rayna found herself ringing the bell of the Salvatore house – something she hadn't had to do for some months.
One of the maids answered.
"Oh, hello there. I was wondering if Stefan and Damon were available?" Rayna asked her.
"Yes miss, but I must warn you, they are entertaining a guest at this present moment." She replied.
Rayna found herself confused.
"Oh. Alright. Nevermind. Would you tell the brothers I stopped by?"
"Of course Miss. Have a nice day." The maid smiled.
"You too." Rayna returned the smile, tipping her hat piece before turning and walking away.
She walked back to her house rather slowly, taking in the frosty morning.
A few hours later, a knock came to her door.
She Vamp sped from her study to the front door, answering it immediately.
Damon stood there looking like a puppy who knew he'd done wrong.
"The maid told me you stopped by. I'm sorry, I was otherwise engaged." He gave a small half smile.
Rayna laughed. "It's quite alright Damon. I know you must have other friends besides me." Damon chuckled. "Even still."
"Come in." She motioned. "Would you like a drink? I have a century old bottle of wine in my cellar that's just crying to be opened."
Damon smiled, stepping over the threshold.
They sat in the sitting room talking over the wine.
"So, who was this friend you were so busy with?" Rayna asked, smirking as she sat back in her armchair.
"She's new in town and staying with my family. You might like her, actually. Your personalities match up rather nicely." Damon smiled.
"She, is it?" Rayna raised an eyebrow, the smirk still clear on her face. "And does she have a name?"
"Katherine. Katherine Pierce." Damon said.
Rayna simply nodded. "Well, I look forward to meeting her."
