🎉 Week 1: Day 2 ~ One-line fun
Welcome to the day 2 of the workshop, where during the first week we are settling in and trying to develop a story idea further on. Today's activity is fun and not-so-fun at the same time!
Having a limitless space to narrate a tale is a luxury, a happy point for writers. One can be as creative and as descriptive as their heart wants, there is simply no space limitations. But, here comes the twist. Describing more in less space is the key here.
That's what our writers need to do try today. You have got a story idea, you have picked a story structure, you have got, at least, a faint idea about what all major points your story will include. Now is the time to summarise your story in one line.
Yes, one line.
What is your plot about? Describe the essence in just one line. This is also called drafting the Logline.
A logline is a one line (maximum two) that captures the essence of your story in a gripping manner. Firstly let's see an example:
––TITANIC – Romance Meets Tragedy
Logline: A young artist and a wealthy socialite fall in love aboard the doomed ship Titanic, facing tragedy as it meets its watery end.
Features:
Emotional Hook: Plays on themes of love, class disparity, and heartbreak.
Historical Context: Grounds the romance within the real-life tragedy of the Titanic.
Character Dynamics: Highlights the romance between characters from different social backgrounds.
This logline presents a strong image in front of audience.
As a beginner, or even experienced, having a logline to your story is really a strong must.
A guide on how to write the logline:
1. Define the Protagonist
Start by clearly identifying the main character. Who is your protagonist, and what unique qualities make them engaging?
2. Highlight the Goal or Conflict
Specify the primary challenge, goal, or conflict your protagonist faces. This is the core of the logline and should convey what’s at stake in the story.
3. Add Unique Elements
What sets your story apart? Include a unique hook, setting, or character trait that makes your logline stand out from others.
Logline Formula
Use this simple formula to structure your logline:
When [inciting incident occurs], [protagonist] must [goal or action] in order to [stakes or outcome].
This wording is not rigid, you are free to use any wording you feel right with.
Daily Activity: Write the Logline in comment section and your genre mentor will leave their feedback as a reply to your comment.
Do mention the genre of your story and then drop the logline in inline comment here --->>
Additional information regarding workshop: we are trying to add the e-mails sent by you to a Google group so it's easier to send the materials at one place and even add week by week, rather than sending emails every now and then. Once it's settled, you will receive the notification. Till then, enjoy these little activities as a warm-up session. We are soon going to be picking up the pace.
