Slight/Slightly

Lots of people do this. All the time. I'm guilty of letting it slip sometimes, though when I edit my works, I usually catch it and fix it.

What I am talking about is the overuse of the words slight and slightly. It comes naturally, so writers usually don't do it consciously. I've seen it written several times in a paragraph, and sometimes more than once in a single sentence. And it usually doesn't make sense the way it is written:

I nodded my head slightly.

Or:

I gave a slight nod.

If you write that, I know what you mean, but it doesn't make sense as a sentence. It would look better like this:

I gave a short nod.

Or:

I nodded a little nod.

These aren't perfect looking sentences, but they look much better than the other ones.

Tumblr Tidbit:

It's kind of like that, almost (I'm gonna do more on this tumblr piece in a later dialogue chapter, also, what I'm pointing out in this post is for writing, and not for feminism, so don't come at me in the comments pls).

If you're going to write an action being done, write the action. You don't "slightly" close a door, unless you're not even closing it. You don't, "slightly" walk in one direction, unless you're only taking a few steps. You're don't "whisper slightly," or "take a slight nap."

You close the door. You walk to the left or step to the right. You whisper, or murmur, or speak quietly. You take a nap. The words "slight" and "slightly" are used for practically everything and rarely need to be there.

So next time you write either of those words, think about if it really needs to be there before you publish.

Have a good day/night!<3

(P.S. sorry if this seems aggressive, I really didn't mean for it to come across that way, despite me saying this was gonna be a rant book💀💀)
