Looking at Your Own Writing

So I rarely have this problem and I don't know why but I know other people do all the time so here we go-

Remember how I said the easiest way to get rid of silly mistakes in spelling and grammar was to proofread?

But what if you hate proofreading?

Yes, I also hate proofreading. But I just sit down and force myself to look it over with the knowledge that if I don't I will probably regret it later powering me.

Because I've made a lot of mistakes that I've published without proofreading and I got really embarrassed after the fact.

One time I accidentally wrote sh*t instead of shut and I've been ridiculously paranoid about the words shut, and shot ever since.

But anyway...

Writing is like a dance that you need to perfect. You have to know the moves and when to do them, and you also have to be comfortable with doing them. For instance, you wouldn't do the splits if you weren't flexible enough.

You already know your plot and your characters, and you also have a rough outline of how you want your story to go (I hope. Otherwise, you might want to work on those first before you even get writing.)

It's the getting comfortable part I'm dealing with here.

Yeah, I dread having to look back at my old stories, and I deleted most of them because I know it isn't my best work and I don't want anyone to see anything else but my best work. And I'm sure you all feel the same.

Here are the tips I have for you:

-Find something you really want to write. Maybe a poem, or a song, a fanfiction, or an original story. Having proper motivation for the actual writing will come in handy if you look it back over in a few weeks and think What the hell was I doing? Then, if you still want to write it, you can go right back and fix everything you think you did wrong.

-If you actually don't like what you've written, there's absolutely zero shame in going back and making edits or deletions or adding on some stuff. I did this with my Narnia fanfiction, which I temporarily discontinued them decided to just rewrite the entire thing. Even though it's not out as of now, I'm still 100% convinced it's way better than the original. I've improved the characters and the plot in a way I never would have been able to if I'd kept the original.

Also, know that no matter how bad you think your writing is, maybe someone else will think it's a masterpiece and wouldn't want you to change anything about it. I see people writing ANs at the bottom of their chapters saying things like this really sucks and I'm really sorry this is so bad when in reality I think it's some of the best stuff I've found on Wattpad. You are your own worst critic, and as soon as you get that negative voice out of your head and look at your work in a fresh light, I'm sure you'll be happy with what you wrote.

So... yeah!
