welcome to my book in which i give helpful tips on writing for both myself and readers! honestly, i am such an insecure writer and such a perfectionist, so i'm always looking for better ways to improve my writing and figured this would be the perfect way to do that.

anyway, so my writing has changed really much over the past few years. for a little comparison of my writing then and now, here it is:

15 year old me: The soldier on my left is shot down, but I just look the other way and keep going.

19 year old me: A gasp escapes me as a sticky substance splatters across my face. I reach my hand up to wipe it off, and when I glance at my hand again, it is covered in thick, red blood. My eyes widen in horror as I glance behind me at the soldier who's been shot as he lies on the ground convulsing. Realizing I don't have time to pause any longer, I turn around, take a deep breath, and keep going.

do you see the difference between those two bits of writing? the first one is short and simple, and while it's not a crime to write like that, you generally want to include more detail than that.
