Story Prompt #3

When people die in this world, they pass through the darkness and go into the afterlife. They see old relatives and family, young and healthy and happy again, running around and talking and just having a good time, a happy new life. In this sense, dying was easy.

Well, for all except one.

Jax never understood his gift...or rather, curse. He lived forever, yet he could still die. It simply took him time to regenerate. Most would see that as a gift and a joy, but he saw it as a setback, a curse on his very existence. He wanted to live a normal life, but this...this wasn't living. This was just being there, having no purpose and just existing.

That wasn't even the worst part. When he died, he didn't just come back a moment later. No, that was when things get tricky.

Regenerating your own body feels like dragging your body through old nails and sharp glass, unable to avoid any of it, making you have to bear through the excruciating pain. Sometimes it took hours, other times days. Each second was pulling onwards, waiting for it to end and to wake up.

Hell, it was traumatizing. Whenever it took days, he would wake up in a coffin. Every time he had to dig himself out of his grave and choke on the dirt, but there was nothing else he could do apart from push through.

All he could do was keep living.

And he hated it.
