Earning too ridiculous amounts pushes some readers away. They do not relate to the character as much because of that.

Do not go below that as well. Especially when the story is set fairly recently in the states. However there is a loophole: getting paid in a much larger lump of sum for a short term work. Usually an "under the table" and it is something of secrecy.

If you are having trouble calculating pay, use a calculator. Math is helpful to put down reasonable pay numbers. And when it comes to very large numbers:

1. Smart and rich have incoming coming from more than one sources. Some of which is risky, and it is for long term. Many of the smart ones want to continue having their lifestyle. Being richer helps.

2. Only morons carry a large amounts of large bills with them. Credit cards, credit apps, and a few unorthodox methods help pay for expensive goods.

3. Fantasy pay in gold holds true to some in real life. But if a kingdom were paying a lot of gold for a task, so is the cost of everyday living. Which means high pay, high cost of living. Gold is then not as valuable. But in a reverse state of which disasters happen, gold becomes more valuable.

4. Not everyone gets this pay. Social classes happen. It creates different backgrounds. Financial worries reaches even the rich.
