Foreshadowing
At times some writers want to foreshadow. Myself included. But if you foreshadow, listen to these ideas and tips:
1. Don't give up too much information. It ruins the story. If you give up the how, then the readers is just going with the motions. No surprises for them.
2. Do not give irrelevant foreshadowing. It confuses the readers.
3. When foreshadowing, decide ahead of time what you are going to do with the story first. Then think up at least a few ideas of foreshadowing. That way you can come up a foreshadow to fit the plot. I face palm myself for not listening this advice myself.
4. This follows 3. Sometimes a couple of things that seem irrelevant but really is relevant is okay. This is the psychic prediction foreshadow. This is something told in dreams, seeing images, or just thinking about it. This is something to be used sparingly. For it to work, it must be relevant enough.
5. Do research about foreshadowing. The more you know, the better.
6. Foreshadowing is a sneaking way to hint the climax, or an important part of the plot. Do not foreshadow the ending. Otherwise, what is the point of making the story. The ending is how the story ends. Foreshadowing the ending is reserved for those who can hide the foreshadow extremely well. Most of us I think don't fall into this. It takes a very brilliant, creative, and is good at hiding details in plain sight.
Foreshadowing is a somewhat a dicey tool to use in the world of writing. But when it is used very well. It is worth it. Anyways these are what I know. Good luck if you foreshadow.
