A Modern Retelling: The Little Mermaid
WARNING: There might be a trigger, so please take note.
She enjoyed the feeling of the wind blowing on her face, the waves lapping on her feet as she breathed deeply. It always managed to calm her, no matter how many times she came to the beach. It was addicting, she admitted to herself, when there was no one there but her.
It felt as if the world was against her when she was down. No one understand her, not even her own family. They named her Ariel after her bright red hair, but fate seemed to deem it fit to play a cruel joke on her.
For the moment she was born until now, seventeen years had passed.
And for that seventeen years, she had never spoke a single word.
They mocked her behind her back, saying that she was cursed for her mother's sins. Oh, she knew, she knew what they said, but what does it even matter now? There was no feeling, except for a numbness that strive deep inside her bones. Nights when she was alone, she would stared with disgust at herself in the mirror, at the scars on her wrists that spoke of pain and loneliness, at the hatred of everyone and the unfairness of the whole world.
Her family tried every possible way to make her vocal cords work again, but nothing worked. The doctors' report said that she was born mute, and nothing could change it. They thought she didn't notice, but she saw how they distanced themselves from her. She was the black sheep in the family, a family where her sisters were the pride and joy, while she was the shame of them all.
How many times had it been? How many times would she suffer, again and again?
Tears streamed down her face as she cried silently, her heart breaking, piece by piece. She clutched her chest. It hurt so much, everyday when she tried to put a smile on her face to disguise the broken heart she hide within her own self.
Standing up, she waded into the sea, the waves surrunding her in an almost gentle way, as if it was welcoming her with open arms. She was consumed in a bottomless void of pain and silence, where she could never voice out her own opinion. At least now, she would be free.
Closer, and closer. The water reached until her shoulders, and then her chin. She smiled happily, her eyes empty of any emotions.
Releasing her own breath, she curled up into a ball and let herself drown. She shut her eyes tightly as she sank to the bottom of the sea.
The last thing she saw was a flash of brown before her vision turned black.
..................
Can you hear me?
A voice, calling for her. So distant was it that she sought to slumber again in peace.
Please, wake up. It was closer now, loud enough to reach her. She tried to chase away the voice, but yet she felt herself close to tears. How much time had passed since anyone had spoke to her so tenderly, almost pleading for her to answer?
She struggled between reality and her subconcious. She never want to experience the pain again. Why? Why was it that no one would let her die? Had she not suffer enough? She was Ariel, the little mermaid whose ending was only to become the sea foam.
Please.
She found herself reaching up to the source of light that had appeared in her mind. Some part of her refused the comfort of the light, wishing to hide behind the shadows. Persisting, she touched the light and opened her eyes.
..................
Her eyes fluttered. Once. Twice. She woke up, coughing as she gasped for breath. A hand steadied her around her waist as she breath in deeply before an alarm rang in her head as she immiedietly fling the hand away from her waist.
Its okay, I won't hurt you. She looked at him in surprise as her breath catched.
He was handsome. His warm dark brown eyes looked at her worriedly as he glanced around for any wounds.
"Why did you do that?" The sadness in his voice was evident. She opened her mouth before closing it on frustration and made a motion for his phone. Snatching it, she typed out a five lettered word.
Why did you saved me?
He looked at her with confusion before replying "Because everyone deserves a chance to taste the true meaning of life."
Under the sun, he was a presence that seems to glow. He was Prince Charming in real life, attracting everyone to him with his warm smile.
That was the first time they met, and without even her knowing, she had fallen for him.
....................................
She was his star. The moon that shined softly under the night skies.
The sorrow in her eyes nearly made his heart break. What had happened to make her that way? That look in her eyes reminded him of the painful memories of his mother that he thought he had burried.
He tried to hide his feelings under a mask, but it never work. He was welcomed by people, but yet he feared being in the crowds. His fear for crowded areas could never leave him completely as he merely stood there.

He suffered secretly in the shadows, hidden. His past had caused him to have PTSD along with anxiety, the part of him that he had always hated. The scars on his heart could never heal.

..............................
It happened more than once.
Fate seemed to plan it in such a way that they would always meet in the most unexpected places.
He became her lantern in her darkness.
She became his companion throughout his days.
They were there for each other to comfort one and other. They became each others existence, the will to live and the hope for a better day.
But the days never last.
I'm going.
He paused and looked at her blankly before asking "When?"
The answer he gave was calm and composed, almost as if it was the most natural thing in the world. No one noticed the pained look behind the mask he wore except her. One stray tear rolled down her face that she secretly wiped away.
Tommorow.
The next morning, she was gone without a trace. No note. No goodbyes.
For the first time since ages, he felt an emptiness in his heart. Clutching his chest, he weep silently.
...........................................
She had run out of tears.
Every step she took was a step away from him. Her feet hurt as if a thousand pins were stuck to it.
With a broken heart, she boarded the plane.
Would they meet again?

The universe is unique.
Life and Death is entangled, just like Light and Darkness. Everything has balance, like fire and water. They work in their own way. No one is truly pure, nor is anyone truly corrupted. Their hearts merely have not been touched for a wall is between them and everyone else.
Everyone is unique. There is no such word as plain, for everyone is different. One cannot expect someone to agree with your opinion entirely, as it is for you.
But above this all, Love triumphs over everything. True love cares not for appearance, and is willing to accept every flaws of you. It knows not jealousy and delights in the truth. There is nothing Love cannot bear, no limits to its faith, its hope or its endurance.
And while Fate plays its part, Love does the job.
For after five years, one lost boy and one mute girl is finally reunited.
Their path is just beginning.
-End-

Thank you so much for reading. Truly, it was not entirely what I was expecting, but I am quite please with it. Perhaps it does not fit the category, but I am satisfied.
Some part about Love up there was took from St. Paul's quotes replaced with a few other words. I do not claim it as mine.
Once again, thanks for reading!
