buttons
Evangeline's grandma, Alice, had buttons with her at all times, moreover, if someone asked for a piece of candy, you'd most likely receive a button instead. For special occasions, say Easter, she presented all of her grandchildren with, you guessed it, buttons, and not only that, but on any given day at any given time, grandma Alice would certainly have a button on hand. Sometimes even two. Some were wooden and jagged on the sides, others were clear and made of plastic. Even the size varied, tiny and easy to misplace or large ones that barely fit in her pocket.
Curiosity overtook Evangeline when one day she thought 'why does Grandma Alice have so many buttons?' Following this thought, she went to her mother and asked her that same question.
The mother took a look at her daughter, shrugged, and with a grin on her face said,
"I know just as much as you Evangeline."
The question was left unanswered for some time until Friday evening arrived. It was right after the family of three were finished eating that Evangeline's mother announced it was time to visit their grandma and after a yelp of excitement the kids ran outside, quickly getting in the car.
Once at the nursing home, which was right down the road, Evangeline went straight to business.
"How come you carry buttons around all the time?"
Alice looked from the window to her granddaughter and gave a sweet smile. With a twinkling laugh, Alice picked Evangeline up onto her lap.
"Oh for many reasons," Evangeline gave her grandma a puzzled look, "one of them being...," there was a small pause, "can you guess?"
"Grandmaaa," Evangeline whined, "I don't know. That's why I asked!"
Alice let out another chuckle
"Alright, alright, calm down. I just simply like them. Why not share a little of my joy with everyone else. Yes?"
Evangeline sat still pondering what her grandma shared with her. Alice's attention was brought back to the window, her eyes shining with adoration for her granddaughter. Following in her grandma's steps Evangeline relaxed into her embrace and stared outside with her, watching the sun slowly turn into stars.
