Good Goodbye
The Red Shogun sat at the bar at the (in)famous Ninjago underground Slither Pits, staring into his half empty glass and just waiting for the moment when his next fight would be announced. Yes, that's what his life was all about now. Kai Smith was just living from fight to fight, trying to forget - or at least distract himself from the memories of - what had happened a few weeks ago... Not only had he lost a teammate and friend, but after Zane's funeral, the whole team had simply fallen apart. Without the higher purpose of defeating the Digital Overlord, Jay and Cole's arguing over Nya had finally gotten completely out of hand, causing the once inseparable remaining four brothers to split up. There hadn't even been a simple goodbye - not even a shitty or a fake one - they just had gone separate ways without a final word to each other.
Kai hadn't heard from the blue and black Ninja since. Apparently, they were both doing fine. According to Lloyd, Cole was using his inhuman strength as a lumberjack, and Jay had found a well-paid job with NTV, Ninjago's biggest television channel.
Of course, Kai was still keeping in touch with his sister who had decided to stay with the Garmadons, but, knowing that she was doing alright without him, he wouldn't talk to her more than absolutely necessary. After all, losing three of his four closest friends was partially her fault... Her inability (although Kai suspected that she had enjoyed the boys' attention too much and therefore simply didn't want to to) choose between them had caused a major rift between Jay and Cole.
But there was also another secret reason why the former red Ninja was really upset with her behaviour. He would never understand how Nya could throw away a happy relationship with the, just because a machine told her so.
Kai had never been to fond of technology anyway, but he would never get over seeing the adorable Master of Lightning so heartbroken over a girl who didn't deserve him.
Yes, while he didn't like technology, Kai very much liked the biggest techie he knew. And he missed him.
Kai downed his drink and swirled around on his stool. Maybe he could convince the organiser to move him up in the schedule and put him on another fight asap. He needed it.
Making his way through the crowded room, he noticed a large group of unfamiliar people sitting on a table in a corner. Kai hadn't seen them at this establishment before, but they appeared to be celebrating and, guessing from their fancy clothing, rather well off. The star of the Slither Pits therefore decided to introduce himself to his potential new fans. As he was approaching their table, he suddenly heard someone laughing, making him stop dead in his tracks. He hadn't heard this cheerful voice in long time. Much too long. Could it really be...
His eyes scanned the group, until they fell on the person in the centre, both of the table and of attention. His auburn hair was stylishly combed to the side, his cute freckles had been professionally covered, and he was dressed in a way too flashy blue suit with pink trimmings, but Jay's sapphire blue orbs were just as unmissable and stunning as Kai remembered them.
"Hi." He interrupted their conversation, causing all eyes to turn his direction - and the affectionate sparkle appearing in Jay's eyes made them look even more beautiful than before.
"Kai." The Master of Lightning exclaimed. "So great to see you. What are you doing here?"
"I work here." Kai explained, presenting his mask. "Ever heard of the Red Shogun? The one and only? The best fighter in all of Ninjago City? That's me." He boasted. "But I have never seen you here before, so I just wanted to welcome our new guests to the best underground fight club in all of Ninjago. What about you?"
"We got approval for a new show concept today, so we wanted to go somewhere special to celebrate - these are my colleagues, by the way."
To be honest, Kai couldn't care less about Jay's coworkers, but he politely shook hands with each and every one of them, from Rachel, the producer, to the lighting assistant before he could focus back on the secret object of his affection.
"It's great to see you again. I've missed you." Kai told his friend. He added in his thoughts: You have no idea how much... "How have you been?"
"I've missed you too." Jay flashed him a bright smile, making Kai's heart skip a beat. "Uhm, not too bad. How about you?" Jay had never been a great liar. And although his job as TV presenter had slightly improved Jay's skills in this area, Kai could still sense that he wasn't telling the truth. The Master of Fire was burning to find out more about his friend's life. And maybe become a part of it.
"Yeah, same here." He gave an equally vague reply, hoping to spike the other's interest. "Hey, I can see you are busy, and I have to go back to my job as well, so why don't we meet up for a coffee or dinner or something like that to catch up properly?" He suggested a more private atmosphere for their next meeting.
"Sounds great." Jay smiled. He took a pen from his pocket and started scribbling on a beer coaster. "Here's my new mobile number. Just... please don't give it to... the others."
"Don't worry, I won't." She doesn't deserve to have it anyway. "I'll text you later."
"Great, I am looking forward to it."
"Me too. But I gotta go now. So... bye, everyone." Kai said.
"Bye." 'Everyone' replied. Except for Jay, who instead answered: "I'll see you soon."
"Very soon I hope." Kai confirmed. And even through the thick layer of concealer, he could see a hint of pink appearing on his friend's and crush's cheeks.
On his way to the arena, he put on his mask in an effort to hide the wide grin on his face.
I'll see you soon.
Now, this was a good goodbye.
It was definitely a much better goodbye than the last - well, non-existent - one.
And who knows, maybe it could even turn into a great goodbye.
