Words like "very" and "really" should be used sparingly. They are really just clutter or filler and very rarely useful.  Or to put it properly -  They are just clutter and rarely useful. 

This is a nice little trick with the goal of making your writing pack more of a punch. If everything is very big and very small and very hot and very cold, the reader loses confidence in you as a writing and might disengage. 

These little extraneous words don't need to be in your writing.  Ask  yourself if they serve a purpose.
