Wait.  How can this be?  You had an idea, you wrote an outline (maybe) and you know what this story is about.

Or do you?

Don't be afraid to get swept away by the story.  Let it flow and follow where it goes.  Go off the beaten path. 

Listen to your characters. They might have something to say.

When I started Ruby Red, it was going to be a story about a rich girl who lost her money and the cute boy her helped her figure how to live without it.  It was going to be light and fluffy - like candy floss.

And it still is. In essence.  But somewhere along the way, Ali asked me to tell her story, explain why she lost her money.  The candy floss was wrapping for something more substantial.
