Oh, the places we can go.
While this quote doesn't explicitly talk about the first chapter, it reflects it for me.
I love working on the introduction to my book, the billboard as I like to call it. I spend a lot of time on it, going over and over it.
Chapter One is more than just the opportunity to introduce your readers to your character and the world they are living in. That's a great start. But why not take it a step further.
You get to tease your reader either obviously by hinting at a nice secret or situation to come. But you also get to tease in a not so obvious way. You can drop a hint in here that will not play into your story until much later. The later the better. Mystery writers do this all the time, but it doesn't mean you can't either.
In Ruby Red, I toss in a little fact about silver napkin rings which by Chapter 12 becomes quite relevant. It was a fun fact and one of my readers picked up on it.
Care to share any secrets from your Chapter 1?
