Chapter 10 - Words

Grace and I both looked up as the speakers crackled to life. "Students and faculty. Please report to the gymnasium promptly. We are having a special guest speaker." With that the voice died away.

"That sounds sort of cool." I said to Grace as we made our way towards the gym.

"I wonder who it could be?" She started naming off names at random, and we shot ideas back and forth. The speaker wasn't here yet, but the bleachers were beginning to fill up. We took our seats, and as we waited I almost thought I saw the members of Anthem Lights, have a seat near the bottom. Before I could take a closer look or ask Grace. Principal Talent stepped to the Mic, making a small introduction. I gasped and Grace and I, looked at each other in surprise to see the young woman that was with Joey only yesterday making her way across the wood floor to the microphone.

"Hello, everyone. I'm Susanna Stephens. You may not have heard of me, but that doesn't mean I don't have a story to tell you and maybe even help you in the time of it." She told us more of her story. How she started out, the love of her family and the music they played together. Then coming to Nashville and a few adventures she had had while here, though I suspect, she probably left out some great stories as well.

Susanna paused, a look of pain covering her face, then she seemed to collect herself and start a glimmer of a teardrop on her cheek. "Not nearly a year ago yet, I was in a car accident. Before you ask, it didn't involve any alcohol or drugs. I was driving down the road, when a little girl ran out in the road after her ball. I dodged her, she was okay, but my car ended up flipping over. I was knocked unconscious. When I woke up, I was in a hospital, surrounded by people that I didn't fully remember. I had amnesia. But the part of this story I really want to focus on is when I was out." She stopped again, her eyes on the crowd, but it seemed like she wasn't focused on us, but something far away.

"I don't know how to really describe it. If any of you have ever had a dream where everything is dark, but you still hear like voices, well it was sort of like that. I was standing there in one small circle of light. From my left came a deep, chilling voice. It called out, echoing over the emptiness, 'Susanna, you have failed. Give it up already. No one wants to hear your awful excuse of a voice. Run away, leave this all behind. There's better things for you. Better music. Leave Christian work behind.' Then a second voice boomed through, accompanied by a bright, warm light, sending the first dark voice away. The second voice called out to me, 'Precious child. All is well, I am here. I have given you a talent and set you on this path for a purpose. Stay strong and lean on me.' It was then that the dark and the light swirled together, one fighting the other. Both voices called out for me to choose whom I would follow. Dark or light? Giving up or pressing on? When I answered, 'God I choose you and to walk in your light!' The darkness shattered giving way to light, it was then that I woke from my deep state of unconscious."

I sat in awe as she finished her story, my heart pounding in my chest. Any doubts that I had let crouch in the corner of my heart were banished as I listened. God has a purpose for me, I don't know what yet. But I'm going to keep working for Him and showing Him in everything I do and say!
