Beyond the Black

Let me try to catch you up. Zak was told by an old man called the Mentor that he wasn't who he thought he was. Zak was just a piece of someone else. When THEY (or sometimes called THEM depending on the syntax) tried to banish this person to Earth Prime, they couldn't, so THEY shattered him into seven pieces and scattered them across the Omniverse. In order for Zak to become whole again, he had to find the other six pieces. Eventually, he did and they arrived at the Heart of the Everything—The Tree of Life (probably not to be confused with the other Tree of Life). There the seven joined together.

I woke in a place called Joe's Diner (a neon sign saying "Eat at Joe's" flashed in the window); on the table sat my laptop with notes about the novel I was writing. My name is Kyle and at first I thought what I'd just experienced was a dream—the seven pieces were all characters from stories I'd written. But my idea of what was real changed when a gang of punks entered the diner looking for me. They called themselves Behemoth, Ziz, and Leviathan. Leviathan proceeded to attack me. He smashed the table and tossed me through the kitchen and through the diner wall. Before I had a chance to recover, he smacked my head into the concrete.

"This one'll be a cakewalk boys," he sneered.

***

The blow knocked the seven apart from each other. They flailed out of control for a moment before each grabbed hold of the harmonic frequency rod that led them there. If they let go of the rod, they could be swept away. This rod was their only tether.

"We can't do it," said Zak looking towards the Mentor. The winds of the Everything howled and the infinite sounds of all realities pulled at the group's focus.

The branches of the Tree blew in the wind causing temporary convergences between worlds as the branches and pink blossoms bumped into each other. All around the heroes was whiteness.

"This is not as easy as we thought," said Buddy (aka Copycat). "We have worked together before but not like this."

The voices of the Everything filled Max's head. They reminded him of how weak he was; they whispered of his failures and shortcomings. "I don't know about this."

Ace tried to stand but the winds knocked him back down; he barely grasped the rod. "And if we do this, we're no longer us. We become this...Kyle. We'll no longer exist."

Joey Wolf managed to stand with his back to the wind, his red eyes full of hunger and his mullet of midnight black hair blowing. "I say we go back to my original plan to destroy you all and I become infused with all your life-energy."

Matthew dusted off his orange spandex. "But we must help Kyle." He batted his blue cape as it flopped and thrashed.

"Why?" snarled Joey. "What has he done for us?"

Matthew swiped at his dirty blond hair. "Don't you want to be whole again? To be rid of that aching emptiness? That feeling that you don't belong?"

Joey's eyes looked to the ground. "Fine," he said. "But how?"

"We can do it," said Joe, stumbling to stand. "Together."

"I don't know," said Ace. "I'm still not on board with this whole 'becoming one' thing. I have my problems; I like me. I don't know Kyle."

"How can you not?" said Matthew, staring at Ace with big eyes from beneath his black mask. "We are a part of him. You are the world-worn yet hopeful side to him. Max is his self-doubt and fear. Buddy is the side that wants to fit in and be accepted. I am the heart; his child-like wonder of the world. Zak is his curiosity. Joey is his rebellious and mischievous side. And Joe is his courage, heroism, and leadership."

"Nice speech," said Joey rolling his eyes. "Really got me right here," he motioned to his chest. "Doesn't change the fact that we're once again about to be scattered to the winds."

"Then let's crawl back to each other," Joe said. "Use the rod and climb back. But let's move together. I'll count us off."

As Joe counted, the seven climbed their way back to the center. The winds and the voices seemed to get worse the closer they got. It was as if all of existence wanted to stop them. But finally, they reached each other and once again clasped hands.

***

I gasped and coughed as I began to pull myself out of the cracked ground. Leviathan and crew continued to mock me.

"Hard to believe this tool is the Child of Convergence," said Leviathan. "That by becoming whole again, he can break through the Fourth Wall." In a flash, Leviathan crossed the ten feet to me and knocked me with a blow that sent me skipping across the diner parking lot like a stone against water.

I finally came to a rest by smacking into the fuel pump from the gas station next door. The pump bent from the impact and gas spilled. With a slight disturbance in air, Leviathan stood next to the forming gas puddle. He lit a cigarette.

"It's been fun, kid, but US [us not United States] is in a hurry to finish this threat. But at least, your notes will go to good use. US will finally break the Fourth Wall and destroy all life in the Omniverse. The Black Nothing will swallow all. So thanks for telling us that claytronics were the way to go. Program some matter in the desired universe to create our body and download our consciousness into it. Who would have thought it'd be that easy." He flicked the cigarette at the gas puddle.

***

"Ace!" cried Joe. "You're still holding back!"

"I just can't sacrifice my existence!"

Suddenly, a dark tendril wrapped around Ace and pulled him away. It flicked Ace away and he crashed into the ground around the Tree. A massive beast then filled the sky. It had dragon horns and tendrils and bat wings and ox hooves and a scorpion-like tail.

"This game ends now!" it spoke in a deep, distorted voice.

Matthew ran-stumbled-crawled his way to Ace, who was barely holding on the rod. Matthew helped Ace up. "You've got to come back," said Matthew. "We can't do it without you. You're a hero, Ace. You've sacrificed your life many times for many people. How is this different?"

The strange beast lashed out at the others. They held on to the rods with a death grip, but they wouldn't hold out forever.

***

The three punks laughed as flames licked at the gas station. More explosions erupted as the fire spread to the other pumps. Once stratified that the threat was over, the trio returned to the diner. Behemoth plucked a bag of popcorn from a customer.

"Hey!" she cried. She tried to take a swing at the biker gang reject, but he simply held her back with one hand, making her look like a small child trying to go after an adult.

"Guys!" Ziz suddenly cried. Ziz had returned to the parking lot to watch the destruction.

In a blink, Leviathan and Behemoth rejoined Ziz. Ziz pointed as I stepped from the flames. I coughed and went to my knees. How was it that my clothes weren't destroyed?

Leviathan nodded towards me with his head. "Ziz."

Ziz leapt high into the air, like 30 feet or more, and smashed down next to me. The impact sent me and much of the area around me into the air. Ziz then appeared before me as I seemed to slowly fall back to Earth. He grabbed my ankle and spun me around like a throwing disc then chucked me through the convenience store.

CRASH! SMASH! BASH!

Glass, shelves, and convenience goods spilled around me. My arms and back were cut from the broken glass. My ears rang and I felt wet blood on my clothes. I managed to lean myself against the wall before Ziz entered the store, smashing the front door like a kid playing with building blocks. A side smirk spread across his face before he screamed. The sound rattled the building. I felt like I was in a small earthquake, but what really hurt were my ears.

***

The beast smashed the ground again and swung its mighty tendrils at the group. The group screamed but held on.

Matthew raised his cape to protect Ace and himself from the flying debris.

Ace sighed as the ground shook. "I'm angry. First, I find out that I'm some fictional character. That I only exist because someone decided to take a different path. And if that wasn't enough, I find out that I'm only just a piece of some other person. And now I have to erase myself from existence in order to become this real person. It's just...a lot."

"It is difficult," said Matthew. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't scared. But it sounds like if we don't do this, these Destroyers...this US will be able to beat THEM and then all life will end."

***

After what seemed like ages, Ziz closed his mouth. I panted and wiped at the fresh blood near my ears. Lightning flashed outside. The wind picked up. Ziz zipped over to me. He picked me up by the neck. "Son of Convergence, it is time to die." With a flick, he threw me through the roof. While still airborne, he blinked into existence right before me. He wound up for another blow.

***

Buddy crawled towards Max, who was curled up shaking. "I shouldn't be here! I'm not a hero!" cried Max.

The beast lashed out upon the Tree. With each strike, brief glimpses of strange scenes appeared and faded. There was a cowboy in a western. In another, a couple battled creatures and the word "Strigoi" was spoken. As the beast hit the tree an image of a violet mushroom cloud erupted in a forest. A gladiator appeared in another bubble-image.

"The end comes!" roared the beast. "I shall devour all!"

Glimpses of fighters battling robots in a boxing ring drifted around the beast.

As the monster continued its assault, Buddy helped Max stand. "You are a hero. You've battle goblins and demons and monsters of all shapes. You've rescued your friends countless times and helped many others."

Buddy turned to the growing images of people of all races, creeds, and sex writing stories on laptops, tablets, and computers. "I'm the one who shouldn't be here. I tried so hard to fit in. I kept secrets from my friends; I was constantly scared that they would find out who I was and what I'd done." Buddy met Max's eyes. "But in the end, it didn't matter. My friends liked me not because I was like them but because I was different. We each have something to add to this world. Every story matters. You need to write your own."

Buddy offered his hand to Max. Max took his hand.

***

Ziz's fist came right for me.

But, I blocked it.

Ziz and I seemed suspended as we reached the apex of our upward momentum.

For some reason, I'd thought back to Buddy in my stories. Everyone distrusted him and hated him because he was different. He tried to fit in every way he could. Eventually, he realized the only one he needed to please was himself. So what if he was different?

And just like Max, I had no reason to doubt myself or my abilities. I enjoyed writing. I enjoyed what I did. Who cares if others don't? The only person I was in competition with was myself. The only thing I really needed to fear was me not trying my best.

Max eventually learned that he didn't want to live with regrets and neither did I.

A strange feeling of peace washed over me.

It didn't last long as I saw that Ziz changed direction midair. He smashed into me and we began flying through the sky. Ziz unleashed a fury of jabs and crosses at my face and chest, but I blocked each. We were a blur of blocks and strikes.

Storm clouds grew around us. The sky became black. Soon the only light was the occasional flash of lightning. I barely noticed the claps of thunder as Ziz and I battled. The very heavens seemed to shake from our blows.

Finally, I saw a weak spot in Ziz's defense. I delivered a one-two combo of a jab followed by an uppercut. The hit sent Ziz soaring high into the atmosphere where he was hit by lightning. As I began falling back to the ground, I spotted a figure with a smoke trail behind it falling towards a distant area.

Once I touched down, surprisingly it didn't hurt and I landed with perfect form, I heard a distant, distorted voice yell out. A second later, the ground cracked and began to float. Whole sections of ground were beginning to become airborne. I was so transfixed by this situation I didn't acknowledge the fact that Behemoth was leaping from floating island to floating island.

I finally did realize he was coming for me, but too late. I looked up in time to see his bulking form coming at me with a flying/falling punch.

POWW!!

The blow hit me straight across the face. A splash of blood came from my face and spotted the ground.

Behemoth followed up this attack by picking up a floating island and smashing it, repeatedly, into me.

Joey found Zak watching the forming image of a male shielding a female from a middle-aged man. The female was apparently called Nora.

"It'd be so easy," Joey half-whispered, "to step in and save them. Huh, ZAP-boy."

"We don't do that," said Zak.

"Oh really?" Joey half-laughed. "If it hadn't been for you looking for us, none of this would be happening. It was your curiosity that brought us here."

Joey's statement hurt Zak, but he knew it wasn't true. US was always against THEM. They would have struck sooner or later. Zak glared at Joey over his shoulder. "What are you even doing here, villain?"

"Contrary to what you might believe, Evil wants to live. If US erases creation, Evil will be destroyed too. You can't know Good without Evil and you can't know Evil without Good. And there is no Evil without Life."

Zak snorted a laugh. "That seems ironic coming from you. Just how many versions of yourself did you kill in your mad quest for the perfect universe?"

Joey chuckled, the light dancing off his sharp canine teeth—sharper than Joe's even. "Exactly, I want one universe, not zero; there's a difference. If anyone shouldn't be here, it should be you."

Zak folded his arms. "How so?"

"They tortured you for decades. US stole you and took you to a simulated world so that they could figure out how best to destroy creation. THEY lied to you. THEY split us into pieces to cover up their own fear that one day this Kyle would become more powerful than they. THEY and US have manipulated us our whole lives." Joey's eyes suddenly flashed a blood red as he grinned. "We know why I'm here—self-preservation—but why are you here?"

"It's my job to protect the balance of the universe."

Joey laughed. "You're seriously going to give me the company line? You're about to fuse with the rest of us and become someone else, and you expect me to believe you are doing it because it's your job? No, I want to hear your real reason. They broke us, tortured us, manipulated and lied to us. They tried to banish us. What is your real reason?"

"Revenge. OK? Revenge!" shouted Zak even though he could be heard just fine over the winds of the Everything. "I want us to become the force THEY feared! I want to hurt them just like they hurt me! Their stupid war cost me decades of my life! I hope we do as THEY fear and overthrow them!" Zak began panting heavily as Joey smiled.

"Not so goody-goody, are we? You're just like me."

"I am," said Zak. "I made a mistake. But I can also come back from it. I can admit to my mistakes and come back. Can you? You were once a hero to your realm. You stopped a war that almost destroyed your world."

"No, it is too late for me. As you said, I've killed myself countless times. I've become rabid."

Zak shook his head slowly, his white hair getting in his eyes. "It's not too late." Joey scoffed at him. "If you really were doing this for self-preservation, you wouldn't be here. As you said: you're about to become someone else. You won't exist anymore."

Joey stared at Zak for a long time. The beast continued to smash at the Tree and the surrounding area. Sounds of splitting wood began to echo through the small space.

Finally, Joey narrowed his eyes. "I am trying to fix my mistake." He went silent for a moment. "I'm surrendering myself in order for others to live." Joey threw a smug-mocking expression at Zak. "See, I'm not so bad after all."

"No you're not," said Zak holding a hand out to Joey. "Let's do this, together."

Joey rolled his eyes and heaved a sigh. "If we must."

***

Behemoth finally stopped his onslaught. The land now rested on top of me. Under the mountain of dirt and gravel, all I could hear was my heartbeat. It was calm.

How could I be calm? My curiosity often led me into unknown lands. Sometimes the results were good and sometimes not so much. I'd made mistakes. I feared that if shared my knowledge it would do more damage than good. Much like how the knowledge of the atom led to the nuclear bomb, I worried that the knowledge I'd gained from my curiosity would cause disaster.

But I was not responsible for the actions of others.

As Behemoth stomped his way back towards Leviathan, guilt began to seep into me. I hadn't done anything bad, but I wanted revenge on those who'd wronged me. I wanted to see them suffer as I had. But these feelings were normal. The most I'd ever done was a prank. Like Joey and Zak, my guilt had held me back.

I took a deep breath. I acknowledged the fact that I had a dark side. There was a side to me that hungered for vengeance and power, but...that wasn't all I was. I wasn't just one mistake or one bad thought. I was the accumulation of good actions and deeds. Just because I'd stumbled, it didn't mean I was a bad guy.

Another wave of peace passed over me.

"Heh, heh," said Behemoth dusting off his hands. "We won't see him again."

The ground began to rumble. The pile of land that rested on me began to tremble.

CRASH-crumble-donk-donk-donk!

The once floating island exploded into thousands of pieces of dirt and rock. This rock rained back down as I stood upright. I looked like some specter standing in the rain but this time the rain was rock.

Behemoth cried out in frustration and charged at me. Suddenly, spires of rock shot from the ground. As he ran, Behemoth smashed through one; leapt into the air and retrieved the falling stalagmite; and shot the rock-spear at me like a missile.

I crossed my arms in front of me like a shield. The rock-missile shattered against my arms. Behemoth dashed towards me as more stalagmites rose from the ground. The massive Behemoth dodged through the maze of rock columns, making it difficult to pinpoint him. Boulder sized rocks suddenly broke free of a stalagmite; Behemoth's face soon followed. He screamed as he threw his massive punch towards me. But this time, I was the one to disappear.

Behemoth's blow struck the ground instead of me. "Huh?" said Behemoth. Now, I reappeared behind him and smacked him with the back of my hand. The blow sent him twirling through at least five of the stalagmites. The weakened columns fell like dominoes; the last falling on Behemoth.

I turned my attention to Leviathan. He removed his leather biker jacket and flicked it away. "You want something done right..." he said.

After beating the other two, I figured I was ready for him. I was wrong.

Before I could react, in what seemed like one motion, he tackled me and then rocketed both of us into the air in a single leap. I struggled against his grip, but found it impossible to break. He just continued to laugh as we angled downwards.

CRA-rrrr-oan!

We'd gone through the hold of a ship. Before I could recognize the smell around us, Leviathan left the battle with a leap. He paused about ten feet above the ship and hovered there. Soon Ziz and Behemoth joined him. While the Titan trio taunted, I remembered what smell permeated the cargo hold. "Oil," I whispered.

Leviathan face shifted into one of glee. He snapped his fingers. Lightning arced from his fingers and straight for the ship.

FOOOOMM!!!

I remember a second of weightlessness just before the ker-splash as I hit the water. The world darkened as I fell towards the bottom of the harbor. My senses slightly registered another splash and the figure of Leviathan.

***

The strange monster continued to tear at the Tree of Life. It seemed to have lost any interest in the seven heroes. It seemed to know that its time was running out.

Matthew counted four glowing forms; he could identify Zak, Joey, Max, and Buddy. He couldn't spot Joe anywhere.

"You said you were scared too," said Ace. "How is it that you can just fuse yourself like this? You won't be you anymore."

"The same way that you faced all sorts of paranormal creatures. You believed that your actions would make the world a better and safer place." Matthew turned slightly towards the Tree. The blossoms and branches were starting to die. "I don't know exactly what will happen to us, but I do know that the world needs us." He put his hand on Ace's shoulder. "I'll miss them too." Ace raised his head. "My whole world was destroyed thanks to the Void. All except Ren. If I do this, I'll never see her again. Just as you won't see Sandy or Glen or any of your friends again. And I suspect that is the real reason for your hesitation."

Ace's face hardened. "It's not fair. We gave everything we had for this cause, and what thanks do we get? We find out that we never existed. That we are just parts of someone else. Our hopes, our dreams...they were fake."

"But, Ace, if we don't do this, Sandy, Glen, and the others won't exist either. No one will."

Ace let out a long sigh. "I know." He held out his hand. "I never asked for this."

Matthew grasped Ace's hand. "None of us did."

***

When I finally opened my eyes, Leviathan's hands were around my neck. When he saw that I was conscious, he changed tactics to shoving my face into the bottom of the harbor over and over while somehow managing to speak underwater, "Why won't you die?!"

Finally getting fed up, he flung me towards the shore. I crashed into the supports for the jetty causing the thing to collapse. Luckily, no one was around. In fact, other than the people in the diner, I hadn't seen anyone.

Leviathan smashed through the jetty remains. He lifted and tossed poles and anything else that stood in his way. Finally, he found me. I was barely conscious as he picked me up by the neck and shot out of the water. Within seconds, we were over the diner's parking lot once again. But instead of setting us both down, he threw me to the ground. I hit the parking lot like a small meteor and left a sizeable dent.

Leviathan landed as the rubble and smoke settled.

I stood and rushed at the biker punk. I took a swung at Leviathan, the nearby smoke trailing behind my movement, but he simply tossed me in some fancy judo throw.

I laid flat on my back as the three terrors surrounded me. They began taking turns pounding their fists into me. Each blow sent me further into the ground. Finally, it ended.

"Give it up," hissed Leviathan.

"Never," I wheezed but remained confident.

"Why do you insist in this action?"

I coughed before answering. "Ace and Matthew gave up everything. I can do no less." Part of me realized what that declaration meant. I believed that those characters, ones I'd been writing stories on for years...were real. They really were battling some beast as they tried to become whole once again. "They taught me hope—hope that even if you are in the darkness, there is light. Matthew, even with everything he knew gone, found love. Ace found friendship among the lies and plots of powerful people."

Leviathan straightened and raised his head in prideful anger. "So be it." He raised his fingers; Behemoth and Ziz followed suit. "The Light will fade. All will fall into Beyond the Black. Into the Void."

They snapped their fingers. There was nothing but light and then fire.

***

"Joe Rover," spoke the black beast.

Joe stood before the frightening fiend and the glowing forms of the six heroes. He pushed his glasses further up nose.

"All alone," said the creature. "The others found their way, but here you remain."

"Not alone," Joe said. "I have my friends. Together we are strong. And that has been the point all along." Joe pointed an accusatory finger at the beast. "You and your kind think that by killing and stealing the life-force of others that you'll become stronger, but look at how strong we've become by working together. Each of our strengths and weaknesses come together to make an unbeatable force."

"Not yet you aren't."

The beast from beyond time and space raised a tendril. It hovered over the immobile forms of the other heroes. The tendril dropped.

Joe leapt through the air and sliced at the giant tendril with his claws. Joe landed, somewhat gracefully, on the other side. The monster laughed, "You missed."

"Did I?"

Both froze and turned their eyes towards the tendril. One second passed. Then two. Then the tendril detached, but no blood was spilled—it was as if the creature was hollow. The beast roared, not in pain, but in anger that such a lowly creature could harm him.

Joe charged towards the others with his hand held out. But at the last second, a tendril snatched Joe and wrapped itself around his body. Seconds later, Joe faced the beast.

"You've come a long way, Little Pup, since the day that I whispered in the ears of THEY and convinced them to shatter you. Without the power of the Son of Convergence, Darkness can swallow the land." The beast shook Joe like a rattle for a moment. "Give it up. You have lost."

"A hero doesn't give up. He fights for what is right, even if it means his life. And a leader knows the strengths of those around him. Or did you think it was just an accident how the others paired up?"

"What?! How could you pull that off?"

Joe narrowed his eyes. "Like I'd tell you."

"Doesn't matter. You tried, but you failed. I only count six."

"Count again." Joe inhaled and exhaled a cloud of gas into the face of the beast.

The unholy creature hacked and coughed. The fit made it release Joe. "Ugh, dog breath!" cried the beast as Joe jumped from the height of small building.

Joe made his landing as the beast screamed. It began smashing wildly. Joe jumped, rolled, and slid passed the whirling tendrils. He was but a few feet from the others when...

BAM!!

A tendril crashed down before him. The beast laughed as the tendrils once again closed in on Joe. This time the beast would not taunt him but would just smash him on sight.

"You pathetic child!" ranted the monster as he smashed Joe into the ground. "I am beyond this universe. I am Beyond the Black. I am ancient beyond your reckoning. You cannot stop me. I am inevitable." He began to squeeze Joe.

"But you seem to have forgotten something."

"And what could that possibly be?" You could almost hear the eye roll in the creature's voice.

"Dogs are excellent diggers." Joe then phased (dug) through the tendril. He landed right by Ace's extended hand.

"NO! DON'T YOU DARE!" shouted the beast.

Joe grabbed Ace's hand. "Dogpile!!" shouted Joe.

A blast of energy burst from the circle of heroes.

***

The three punks laughed in triumph as the smoke and smaller fires raged around them.

"No one could survive our omega force," Leviathan heckled. He then held my laptop over his head like a trophy. "And with this the Omniverse is our oyster. We can go where we want and do what we want."

Ziz suddenly stopped laughing and pointed. I stepped from the smoke, it drifting away from me as if it wanted no part in what was about to happen. I glowed with some kind of yellow aura; energy crackled around me.

"Impossible," said Behemoth.

Leviathan growled then sped towards me with a punch. I caught his fist and squeezed; he cried out in pain. "I am so sick of bullies," I said before tossing him like a toy.

I turned to the others. "You think I'm weak. But they made me strong. Max taught me courage. Ace gave me hope. Buddy taught me that everyone is special. Zak taught me to question things and to ponder. Matthew kept that child-like wonder in me. Joey allowed me to accept my dark side and Joe showed me the power of teamwork."

I charged towards them. Ziz tried to take a swing at me; but I dodged in a blink of an eye. I came at him with a right hook to the side of his head; he went flying into a car. Behemoth brought his fists down on me, but I held them back. As I pushed against his power, the ground began to break. Finally, I had enough leverage to knock away his hands and deliver a side kick to his chest. He went airborne and landed right on top of the just recovering Ziz.

As I retrieved my laptop, the clouds parted. Light and color seemed to return to the world. Amazingly, the laptop still worked.

"Don't," coughed Leviathan, coming from nowhere holding an arm and blood coming from his nose.

"I don't listen to your kind anymore," I said and clicked the "Publish" button.

***

"NOOO!!" screamed the beast as an enormous energy ripped through it. It disintegrated like dust in the wind.

***

Later that night after everything settled, I found a quiet spot among the grass of the park and turned my attention skyward. The stars shined silently above me. I found myself thinking of Joe, Ace, and the others. Somehow I knew they were still alive. "I wonder what's next for us?"
