Finding Your Process Part Five - Activities

Okay, we made it through the different processes and methods in the previous chapters. Do you have a good idea of how you like to work? Maybe there are some methods in there that you want to try? Are you inspired? Well you'd better get inspired because we're about to get some shit done!

Feel free to pick one, multiple, or all of these activities to try out.

Organizers

What tactics do you employ from this process as of right now? Do you keep meticulous notes? Maps? Files upon files of character sheets?

Your mission is to try out an plot structure diagram. Do a google search and find one that fits your style, or makes you comfortable (or maybe one that makes you uncomfortable if you want a challenge and to try something new!), and give it a shot.

You can either plug in your current WIP, or map out a whole new plot, but whatever you do, make sure to use the entire thing. Every pinch point, every arc, map that shit. It'll feel so good, I guarantee it!

Already using a plot structure diagram? Try a different style of one! Shake it up a bit just for shits and giggles.

Pantsers

Heyo, my people. Your mission today is to do a character interview. If you're used to pantsing all over the place and you're just not feeling motivated, pick a character (doesn't even have to be your protagonist!) and draft some questions to ask them.

Then, slide into their persona as best you can and answer that shit.

You could ask them random generic stuff, like their favourite colour, favourite food, or what was their first crush like. Or, you could delve deeper into the plot of their character arc, ask them how they feel about certain scenes or events from the book that weren't explored as deeply as you wanted. Whichever path you choose, use it as a way to take a fun break but still be productive to being immersed in the world of your story.

Hybrids

Alright, halflings, I task thee with the seven alternatives practice. You can use it on a scene or event you've already written just for something fun to do, or use it where you are in your WIP to try to enhance your upcoming plot. Maybe it'll shake something loose for you to pants or plan.

And, though I said in the previous chapter that it doesn't have to be seven, for the purposes of this assignment I'm going to be mean and say yes, it has to be seven. Because I'm an asshole.

Get writing, bitches!
