Chapter 2
I walked into the local diner where I'd be meeting Katrina at.
Luckily she was available and I took my lunch break early.
I spotted her sitting at a booth in the back. She had a short skirt on and a long fur coat covering a skimpy white top.
I awkwardly cleared my throat. "A-are you, Katrina?"
She glanced up at me with a smile. "Katie's the name, datings the game."
I stuck my hand towards her. "Shelby, you talked to my assistant on the phone."
She stood up and shook my hand.
"Right, that girls something else." She replied with an obnoxious laugh.
I just nodded before sitting down, Katrina taking her spot across from me.
"So, which of my specialties do you require?" She asked with a wink.
I closed my eyes and sighed. "Please tell me you're not a hooker."
She leaned in close, looking me up and down with a mischievous glance. "I can be whatever you want, cutie."
I stood up. "Alrighty then, forget I called, sorry to waste your time, miss." Then, I headed out the door.
I was almost to my car when I heard her voice. "Hey, hold up a sec."
I stopped and turned towards her. "Look, I'm sorry-"
She put a hand up. "Don't be... I'm sorry for what I said, I'm not a hooker..." Then, she sighed. "Look, I'm behind on my rent and I'm scared they're gonna kick me out, I could really use the money."
I looked down, folding my arms over my chest. "Fine, just, promise me you'll be on your best behavior, it's very important this dinner goes well."
She smiled, giving me a little salute. "Aye, captain."
I couldn't help but return her smile, pulling a post-it-note from my purse and scribbling my address on it. "Meet me here at eight o'clock sharp, got it?"
She crumpled it and jammed it in her purse. "Thank you, so much. I promise I won't let you down."
I gave her a small nod before getting into my car and heading back to work.
"So, how'd it go with the hooker?" Luna asked as I passed her desk.
"She's not a-" I shook my head, cutting myself off. "Never mind." Then, I walked into my office, closing the door behind me...
After work, Luna and I made our way to the employee parking lot.
"I can't believe you gave her your address." Luna said.
I glanced at her. "So what, I'm hiring her aren't I? Who cares if she knows my address?"
Luna stopped in her tracks. "What if she's there right now, robbing you."
I stopped as well. "You don't think she'd really do that, do you?"
She just shrugged before walking off. "Good luck."
I shook my head before quickly pacing to my car, starting it up and heading home.
When I got home, I did a quick look around, making sure no one robbed me.
I sighed, plopping down on my couch. 'She's just messing with you, relax. I mean, this was her idea in the first place, she wouldn't really put me in that kinda situation, she's my friend.'
My thoughts were cut short by a knock on the door.
I looked down at the time on my phone. "7:59 PM."
With a long breath, I got to my feet and walked over to the door, pulling it open to reveal Katrinas smiling face.
I looked her up and down, her hair was up in a pony tail instead of dangling over her shoulders, she had less makeup on, and she wore a pair of jeans and a black sweatshirt.
She actually looked, kinda cute. Maybe even pretty.
"Well, are you just gonna stare at me or are you gonna let me in?" She asked teasingly.
"U-uh, sorry, yes, please come in." I stuttered, stepping out of her way.
She walked in and took a quick look around my apartment. It wasn't super laid out, but it was nicer than most.
She let out a low whistle. "Nice digs."
I closed the door and hesitantly followed behind her. "Thanks."
Then, she stopped and turned around, causing me to almost run into her.
"So, where do we start?" She asked, placing her hands on her hips and a fresh smile on her lips.
I averted her gaze. "W-well, this is a fancy charity dinner, we're raising money for children's cancer research and-"
She put her hand up, cutting me off. "Skip the depressing part, what do you need me to do?"
"I need you to dress nicely, act nicely, and pretend to be my date."
She nodded. "Ok, so, how much am I getting payed?"
"Uh, how much would it cost?"
She tapped her finger to her lips, seemingly deep in thought. "Well, every hour I spend with you will cost three hundred, so including-"
"Wait, three hundred, as in, dollars?"
She stared me down, folding her arms over her chest. "That's my rate, is it gonna be a problem?"
I sighed, lowering my head. "No, I guess-"
"Good, 'cause you're on the clock, sweetie."
"Wait, like right now? But; the dinners not for another few days."
She plopped down on my couch. "Don't sweat it, you only have to pay me when I'm in your presence and I am keeping track."
I sighed before walking in front of her. "Alright, let's get this show on the road then."
She nodded before I started talking. Telling her everything she'd need to know. Who to avoid, who to talk to and how to talk to them, the dress code, everything that would ensure the dinner goes smoothly.
After a couple hours of that, I plopped down next to her. "And that's pretty much everything."
She nodded as she stood. "Alrighty, I'll see you Thursday then."
I looked up at her. "Wait, you're leaving?"
"Well, yeah, you didn't expect me to spend the night..." A smile spread on her lips as she looked me up and down. "Although, I could-"
I quickly stood, cutting her off. "Never mind, I'll see you in a few days."
She nodded and started heading for the door.
I followed behind her.
She reached out for the handle before quickly turning around. "Are you sure you don't want me to stay? I'll give you a discount-"
I put my hands up. "Nope, I'm ok."
She flashed me a quick smirk. "Alrighty, goodnight, Miss Porter."
I gave her a small nod. "Goodnight."
She looked me up and down once more before leaving.
I locked the door and headed back to the couch, collapsing into it with a long sigh.
"'You're not staying?' Stupid..." I mocked myself.
