Chapter 8

The day of the wedding finally arrived. It should've been the happiest day of my life. But, I was nervous, overwhelmed, upset. What started out as a fun idea was starting to derail itself. Everything seemed to be building to a head and it was starting to worry me...

I stood in the changing room, looking at myself in the mirror. Katrina was right, her cousin made beautiful dresses.

Then, there was a knock on the door. "Who is it?" I asked.

   "It's me." Katrina replied.

Katrina, the one shinning light through all of this. My rock. The only thing keeping me sane.

I opened the door, seeing Katrina standing in her dress, her hair and makeup already finished.

My heart rate sped up. "Wow... You look gorgeous..."

She gestured to me. "Look who's talking."

I smiled a little, pulling her into a deep kiss.

She lightly pulled away after a minute. "Alright, easy now, I don't wanna ruin my makeup. My cousin would kill me."

I chuckled a little, taking her hands in mine. "I can't believe we're actually about to do this..."

She looked down, something hidden behind her eyes. "Are you... Are you having any doubts..?"

"About you? No. Not even a little bit... Now, Luna on the other hand..."

She started to laugh. "I'm sure she means well."

I let out a little sigh. "Yeah... I probably owe her an apology, huh?"

She shrugged. "Probably. But, I am kinda enjoying watching her cower every time she's near you."

I let out a chuckle. "It does make me feel powerful."

We broke into laughter then, before Luna herself poked her head in. "Uh, can we enter?" She asked.

I raised my nose to her. "If you must."

She nodded, leading Julia into the room.

Julia's eyes went wide as she ran up to Katrina. "Oh no, it's bad luck to see the bride before the ceremony."

"Julia-" She cut me off, taking Katrina by the shoulders and leading her out of the room. "Traditions are traditions." She said.

Katrina threw a little wave and smile over her shoulder before the door closed behind them.

I smiled a little before turning to Luna. "Hey... You ready?"

She smoothed out the front of her dress. "Not just yet... There's something I wanted to tell you..."

I sat down on the little couch in the room, patting the spot next to me. "Sure, what is it?"

She sat down, nervously fidgeting with the hem of her skirt. "Well... Look I'm not very good at all this mushy shit, it's a sign of weakness and if I show the universe any weakness it'll break our deal and-"

I put my hand on her shoulder then. "Luna, you're getting sidetracked. Just, tell me what's on your mind."

She rolled her eyes. "Fine, but if I lose my spot on the list because of this, I'm blaming you."

I chuckled a little. "Fair enough."

She stood then and started pacing around the room. "I'm sorry I pissed you off and I'm sorry I said all those mean things about Katrina. I didn't mean it, I'm just..." She groaned then, looking up at the ceiling. "This is so dumb."

I stood then, taking Luna by the shoulders and looking her in the eyes. "Hey, you can tell me anything. You know that."

She looked me in the eyes for a second before looking away, a slight blush creeping onto her cheeks. "Fine... I'm jealous. There, you happy?"

I took a step back then as she nervously rubbed her arm. "Jealous..? Of me?"

She shook her head furiously before starting to pace again. "No, Jesus. Your life sucks. Sorry but it's the truth."

I rolled my eyes a little. "Then who're you jealous of?"

"Katrina! I'm jealous of Katrina. She just rolls in off the street and pushes me to the side. She didn't stay in that shit job for all those years just to be around you. I did, you know? I put in the time and she swoops in and steals you away from me. I mean what's so special about her anyway? She's a glorified hooker who has a hard on for her ex. I don't care how charming and pretty she may be, she's-"

I raised my hands then, cutting her off. "Whoa, slow down. You have a crush on me?"

Luna threw her arms up. "Obviously... I mean look at you, who wouldn't." She averted my gaze then, turning her back to me.

"Luna... I didn't know." I said, resting my hand on her shoulder.

She shrugged. "It's not your fault. I should've said something sooner."

"Look, I'm sorry, really I am. But, what'd you say about Katrina?"

She spun around then. "I'm sorry I called her a hooker."

I shook my head. "Not that, about her ex? Who?"

She rolled her eyes. "C'mon, Daisy obviously."

   "What makes you think that?"

"I overheard them talking the other day..."

So, Luna laid out the story for me. At least as much as she could remember.

My heart sank a little. "'Couldn't resist her?' What's that supposed to mean?"

Luna shrugged. "Beats me. But, she should've told you... It just pissed me off."

I pulled her into a quick hug. "Thank you, Luna, but I gotta go find Katrina."

I made a beeline for the door then and headed out into the ballroom.

All our closest friends and family milled about, sipping drinks and getting to know each other.

I walked up to my parents first. "Hey, have either of you seen Katrina?"

"No, sweetie, is everything ok?" My mom asked.

"Yes, I just need to talk to her."

"When you find her, tell her we would've paid for the wine if this is what her parents were going to choose." My dad added.

I rolled my eyes. "We talked about this, dad."

"I'm just saying, who brings boxed wine to a wedding?"

I shook my head and closed my eyes. "I don't have time for this right now. Keep an eye on him, mom."

Then, I turned on my heel and marched further into the fray, eventually running into Julia.

I grabbed her arm, pulling her with me. "Take me to Katrina."

"But, what about traditions?" She asked.

"This is more important, I promise."

So, she begrudgingly led me to a back room, where Katrina was waiting.

"I just want to make it clear that I don't like this, it's giving me a bad feeling." Julia said.

"Noted." I replied before ushering her out the door and closing it.

Katrina stood up. "Are you ok?"

I folded my arms over my chest, shaking my head. "No... No I'm not..."

She tried to take my hand, but I pulled away. "Hey? What's wrong?"

I raised a finger. "First, my dad's already bitching about the wine. Second, Luna has a secret crush on me... And, third, I know about you and Daisy..."

Katrina looked shocked, her eyes widened a little. "What do you mean?"

"Luna told me about the talk you and Daisy had the other day... Did you guys used to date? Do you still wanna be with her?" I asked, looking at her expectantly.

   "Shelby..."

"I need to know the truth before I agree to spend the rest of my life with you." I said sternly.

She was quiet for a second before sitting back down. "I love you, Shelby and I wouldn't have asked you to marry me if I didn't... Daisy, though... She was my first girlfriend... My first true love... The first person I ever kissed or... well you know..."

My heart sank even deeper. "Do you... Do you still love her?"

Katrina shook her head. "No... But, she knows just what buttons to push... There's a reason I left home. She's wildly manipulative and I become a completely different person when I'm around her... I'm sorry, Shelby, I should've told you sooner..."

I let out a sigh. "Did you sleep with her since we've been in town?"

Katrina stood then, looking right at me. "No, I would never do that to you."

I nodded. "Do you still wanna marry me?"

   "More then anything."

I looked her in the eyes. "Do you really love me?"

She took a step closer, taking my hands in hers. "With my whole heart."

I smiled a little. "I love you to."

She leaned in then, pressing a kiss to my lips. "I promise you, I won't let anything come between us."

I kissed her back. "Good, because I'll knock that bitches teeth out if she gets in the way of our day again."

She chuckled a little. "Now that I'd pay to see."

I laughed a little in return before standing a little taller, smoothing out the front of my dress. "Well, I only have one more question then... Are you ready?"

She took my hand, standing tall next to me. "More then ready."

I gave her one last quick kiss. "Then, let's get this show on the road..."
