010. OH YOUVE RUINED ME
CHAPTER TEN
oh you've ruined me
The first thing Dwayne asked her when they got into his room and shut the door was 'what is that on your arm?'
They had sat on the floor, leaning their backs on the side of his bed. They were side by side.
"Why did you start talking again?" she asked immediately after.
"Why did you start talking again?" he replied smugly.
She thought for a second laying her head back and staring at his ceiling.
"I laughed."
"You laughed?"
She nodded and turned to look at him but he was already looking at her.
"There was this guy, he kept trying to know my name and stuff. Anyway after I threw my slushy at him and ran away, I laughed and then I started screaming so loud I'm pretty sure I scared all the birds away," she explained.
"Did he do anything else?" Dwayne found himself whispering.
"Just touched my knee and grabbed my arm," she said showing him the mark.
"Im sorry Winnie," he mumbled, his mind off in some other place.
He hated this guy.
"Now it's your turn," she spoke, not wanting to talk about her experience anymore.
"Huh?"
"Why did you stop talking?"
"When Grandpa died-"
"Grandpa died!?" she exclaimed.
"Overdose," he explained.
"Oh man."
"Anyway, when we were at the hospital Olive grabbed these eye tests. We did a colorblind one and I couldn't see the letter in the circle so we found out I was colorblind. Uncle Frank told me that I can't fly jets if I'm colorblind."
"Oh Dwayne. . ."
His poor dreams were crushed.
"Im sorry Dwayne," she told him.
It was silent. A comfortable one really, they didnt have anything else to say to each other. So as a few minutes passed, Winnie felt the need to lighten the mood.
She stood up from her position on the floor and walked over to his record player, that Winnie forced him to keep in his room so they didn't have to keep moving it back and forth from downstairs.
She picked up a pink floyd album, the division bell, and placed it on before turning to Dwayne. It was her favorite album of all time.
She swayed her hips and moved her shoulders as Dwayne watched her amused. She closed her eyes, as the intro to 'Poles Apart' began playing.
Dwayne laughed softly as she mouthed the lyrics, she got really into it. His laugh caused her eyes to open and she sent him a big genuine smile.
She held out her hand as if to tell him to come dance but he didn't budge. So she bent down and dragged him up to his feet.
He didn't underestimate her but he sure didn't expect her to have that much strength. His arms went around her waist and hers around his neck.
He sent her a smile before turning and laying on her shoulder.
"Hey you," they sang at the same time softly, swaying in beat of the song. "Did you ever realize what you'd become?"
He spun her around making a loud laugh escape past her lips.
"And did you see that it wasn't only me," he sang to her, incredibly off key. "You were running from?"
She extended her arms before pulling him back in toward her.
"Did you know all the time but it never bothered you anyway?" she sung back.
"Leading the blind while I stared out the steel in your eyes," they sang together, laughing not too soon after.
Dwayne made the bold move to lean his forehead against hers and held her tighter while they continued to sway to the music.
How peaceful it all felt was something Winnie would never ever find the words for. And she didn't want to. Because for the first time she felt like she didn't have to write down her emotions after this finished happening.
She already understood what she felt.
"I like you Dwayne," she whispered, closing her eyes.
Their foreheads still rested together, showing no signs of separating, and he closed his eyes right after.
"I would hope so. . .it would suck if we weren't friends," he smiled.
"Haha," she faked laughed, trying to get closer to him even though they were centimeters apart anyway. "I mean I like you Dwayne."
"I like you too Winifred," he mumbled.
"In the same way I like you?" she questioned, trying to ignore how he used her real name, it made her chest hurt worse.
"If it's like what I'm thinking then yes," he admitted. "I like you so much."
"How are you sure we are on the same page?" she hummed.
"Will you kiss me?" he asked, completely serious.
"I want to. . .so bad," she replied, not knowing exactly what he was asking.
"So kiss me," he told her.
And so she did.
Their lips met in a soft yet weird kiss. Their teeth collided which felt very odd yet their hearts felt like they were about to explode.
They pulled away quickly after.
"Oh you've ruined me Winnie," he mumbled, eyes still closed.
The beat of the song began to pick up.
"How so?" she asked, pulling away making both of their eyes open.
"I'm not sure," he said, looking in her eyes. "But everytime I even think about you I feel so ruined."
"I'm sorry."
"I think it's a good thing though," he reassured. "I like being ruined by you."
"That sounds very weird," she laughed making him roll his eyes. "You ruin me too."
"That's nice to know."
