On Second Thought
Emmett sat. "I met the new Head of The Hallowed Agency, John Campbell. He's a good guy, I think. I briefed him on everyone and I hope I didn't screw up!" He drank his iced tea. He loved Rachel's iced tea.
Marcie smiled at her husband. "I haven't met him yet but I heard good things. I think I have a meeting with him tomorrow. I'm a little nervous."
"He is a nice man, Marcie. Greg was his mentor so I think he will work out." Emmett sighed. He hoped so. "I told him about everyone and I hope I did that right! He was easy to talk to."
"Great. I will probably say inappropriate things!" Marcie smiled.
"I probably did. He is giving us a written report of what needs improvement at the end of the month. He said he didn't want to change much. I don't know."
Emmett hated getting a new boss. They always changed everything. He would probably take this team apart and send them to other places. Emmett was lost in thought after that.
Grayson loved working with Linc. Lincoln Cordova was dedicated and honest. He was easy to get along with and easy to figure out. He just loved to hunt. There was no mystery to him. They spent a lot of time training and practicing. He loved that they got along so well.
This was a normal group of hunters. There was one in every large city. There was a chef, two public relations, one mechanic and two hunters. They stayed in houses that were all built similarly.
They had a kitchen with an eat-in area, a formal dining room, library and meeting room on the first floor, the second floor was offices. They all had one.
The third floor was the living quarters. Each room had a bathroom but they had a shower room and lockers. It was a community shower. They had a schedule so that the women had privacy. They respected that. There was a gym to practice in on the second floor and every house came with a quiet back porch and deck area for bbq's and entertaining, if it was required.
Greyson had known for a long time that he was gay. He even tried to date once in a while. Dating was tough and didn't go well so...he never had second dates. A lot of times he had to leave in the middle of a date and couldn't explain why.
The Ukase couldn't advertise that they were hunters. Their job was top secret. The regular population didn't need to know about them because most people didn't know about vampires.
Leaving in the middle of a date was never received very well and he never saw them again. That was what happened with this last guy and he was very cute.
Grayson decided to come out at dinner. He was sick of hiding. Rachel and Tyler were actually getting along and that was rare.
Rachel cooked an awesome meal. Marcie and Emmett were a little late but they walked in as dinner was set on the table. Linc had just showered off vampire blood because he got to kill a very stupid vampire. He hummed as he bounced down the stairs. He was in the best mood.
Grayson sat. He had his bad date and needed to talk. He was ready to come clean. "So, I went on a date before the hunt..."
Rachel gasped. She always hounded him about finding a woman. "Good for you!"
Grayson sighed. "No. It was awful. I got called out in the middle of dinner. He won't even answer my text. I think it's over." He said it really fast. He had to just say it. He was gay. He inhaled. They knew now.
They all froze. Rachel talked first. "He?"
Grayson nodded. "I have wanted to say something for a long time. Yes, I'm into guys! Is that a problem?" He wanted to challenge any of them.
Emmett had to say something. "But you are so masculine!" He winked. He didn't care.
Grayson glared.
Rachel laughed. "And gorgeous!" Grayson was gorgeous. He was tall with broad muscled shoulders, he had muscles everywhere. His eyes were a pretty blue/gray color. Mostly they looked gray. His smile was a melt your spine smile. He had a dimple when he smiled. Rachel always thought he was sexy.
Marcie smiled. "I have so many guys I could set you up with! I work with tons of gay guys!" She was making a list in her head. She would find the perfect guy for Grayson.
Emmett nodded. "I do too. What is it about reporters and data entry people. There are a lot of gay men in that field!" He smiled.
Linc was quiet. Grayson was worried the most about him. "Linc?"
Linc looked up. "Gay?" Grayson nodded. "How long?"
Grayson wanted to be honest. "A long time. Probably before I came here to be a hunter. I was too afraid to say anything."
Linc nodded. He was quiet for a few minutes. "Can you still fight vampires?"
Grayson nodded. "Yes. Nothing has changed, Linc. Just now you know."
Linc nodded again. "Okay. That's all I care about, Grayson."
"Thanks, Linc." Grayson hoped this was over. It was no big deal. He appreciated Linc. They were a good team. "Are you okay?" Linc called him Grayson but he was ignoring it.
Linc nodded again. He really wasn't sure if he was okay. "As long as you show up to help me capture vampires, I don't care who you sleep with. That's none of my business, Grayson. Cool?"
Grayson nodded. "Cool." He watched Linc. He just called him Grayson again. He never did that unless something was bugging him. Linc wasn't okay.
Emmett spent the evening razzing Grayson about being into guys. Grayson flipped him off and finally went to bed.
Linc didn't know why but he couldn't sleep. Grayson was into guys? Why would that bother him? He didn't know why but it was keeping him up. Linc never cared before.
Grayson could date whomever he wanted and it never mattered. Why did this matter? Linc was almost obsessing over it. He couldn't sleep so he was going to the gym to hit something until he passed out.
Linc went over the past seven years. There were moments that he ignored. They stood out now. Things that he thought about later. Once during practice, Grayson pinned Linc and he looked like he might say something but jumped up. A touch on the shoulder after a capture. Grayson's hand lingered longer than it should have.
There were a few moments and looks. Linc caught moments where Grayson had been staring, watching him. Linc stared at Grayson sometimes. He was gorgeous, Rachel was right. Linc liked to watched Grayson move. He walked with... determination, maybe. Every movement with Grayson was intentional. He was perfect.
Linc marched to the gym trying to shake the thoughts. Grayson was there. Of course he was. He walked to his corner bag and started hitting it, hard. Grayson was quiet also. He was worried that Linc wasn't okay. It was clear that this bothered him. A lot. Grayson was annoyed with the silence.
"What?" Grayson almost yelled it.
Linc hit the bag. "Why do you have to be gay?" He was breathing heavily and stopped punching. He was trying to figure out what his problem was. He didn't care that Grayson was gay. He really didn't but something was bugging him. He had no idea what it was.
"Really?" Grayson was still annoyed.
Linc was pissed and wasn't sure why. "Fuck you! We have been a team for what? Seven years! Me and you. We have done everything together! We have showered together!" They showered in a community shower. They had been naked together. Linc was freaking out. "I thought I knew everything about you! You have hidden this from me. Why?"
"It's not easy to say, Linc and it's really no one's business. I'm not into women, big deal. Who cares?"
Linc inhaled. "I do. I care, Okay? I care about everything you do because we are a team! I thought we were." His voice faded a little.
Grayson looked shocked. "Linc. We are still a team. This has nothing to do with who I like. I'm sorry!" He didn't want things to change and it looked like he was wrong.
"Whatever. I need sleep." Linc stormed out and rushed to his room. He even locked the door. He paced. He didn't know what his problem was.
