chapter 22 - I'm Thinking of You All the While

Outfits in the external link

From 1.01 "Pilot", night in the woods, over the fog-covered forest floor.

Elena: (voice over) "Previously on Worlds Colliding (The Vampire Diaries)"

From 6.18 "I Never Could Love Like That", in the Lockwood Mansion, Kacie, Bonnie, Lindsey and Tory were talking.

Tory opened the box to reveal the Cure inside. "The Cure to vampirism."

From 6.20 "I'd Leave My Happy Home For You", in the vision outside the Gilbert House, Elena took the Cure.

Damon: (voice over from 6.19 Because) "You're gonna take the Cure, Elena."

From 6.19 "Because", in the boarding house, Elena and Damon were talking.

"And I'm gonna take it with you," Damon told her.

From 6.21 "I'll Wed You in the Golden Summertime", in the altar house, Damon and Elena were talking.

"The smallest chance at the perfect life with you is definitely better than an immortal one without you," Damon told her.

From 6.18 "I Never Could Love Like That", outside of Skull Bar, Nicola and Sarah were talking.

"I want to have some sort of relationship with my sister," Nicola told her.

Sarah sighed. "But this sounds like a goodbye."

Nicola compelled Sarah. "You're gonna go home, and you're gonna live your life, far away from me and mine."

From 6.21 "I'll Wed You in the Golden Summertime", at the wedding location, Tyler and Nicola were standing on the bridge, overlooking the lake.

"I was wrong to do that to Sarah," Nicola told him. "I shouldn't have compelled her."

"Sorry, not wanting your sister to get killed and compelling her to go back to her life is pretty low on the horrible things that a person can do," Tyler told her.

"You told me before I turned it back on that you fell for me," Nicola told him. "I don't know when it happened, but... I fell for you. And  I can't thank you enough for taking care of me when I was losing my mind, for helping me keep my humanity on for as long as you could."

"Take all the time you need," Tyler told her.

From 6.17 "A Bird in a Gilded Cage", in the 1903 prison world, Bonnie, Tory and Lindsey stood in a circle. Elena held onto Bonnie's shoulder. Damon and Kacie held onto Tory's shoulders. Liv and Lily held onto Lindsey's shoulders.

Kai was walking closer weakly.

The bright, blinding light surrounded them, bringing them home.

Kai started to breathe heavily, falling to his knees, looking around in despair, realizing that he was trapped.

From 6.18 "I Never Could Love Like That", in flashback on the ship, Mercy stood on the edge of the ship, looking into the water below, looking as if she would jump. She heard something behind her, turning around to see six figures walking toward her.

Jo: (voice over from 6.18 I Never Could Love Like That) "Lily fell in with a group of witches that were cast out of the Gemini Coven. They were known as Heretics, siphoners."

From 6.18 "I Never Could Love Like That", in the Whitmore Medical Center, Lindsey, Tory, Luke, Ryan and Jo were talking.

"Both witch and vampire," Jo told them. "Hybrids and Heretics are one and the same."

"Yeah, but the hybrids were turned with Doppelganger blood," Ryan told her.

Lindsey seemed to realize. "Oh." Jo nodded. "My blood?"

Jo looked at Tory. "And you can become a hybrid Heretic."

From 6.20 "I'd Leave My Happy Home For You", in the prison world, Kai looked at the Heretics. "It's time to get the hell out of this place."

From 6.21 "I'll Wed You in the Golden Summertime", at the wedding, everyone was in attendance.

Joshua escorted Jo down the aisle.

Everyone turned to watch them meet Cristian, Stefan, Damon, Alaric, the reverend, Elena, Alex and Liv at the altar.

The reverend began the homily. "Welcome, family and friends, to the wedding of Alaric Saltzman and Josette Laughlin."

Jo suddenly stopped, gasping loudly, looking weak and in pain, sparking everyone's alarm and confusion.

"Jo?" Alaric asked. Blood began to gather in the front of Jo's wedding gown, as if she had been stabbed from behind. "Oh, God, no!"

Jo gasped, falling forward.

Alaric caught Jo in his arms.

Kai appeared behind Jo with a bloodstained hunting knife in his hand.

Everyone looked at Kai in shock.

Alaric lowered to his knees on the floor, holding Jo. Jo was pale, in very bad shape.

Tory stood, holding a hand toward Kai, using a pain infliction spell, making him groan in pain.

Kai breathed heavily in pain, chuckling through it. "Tory Donovan, fellow siphoner. Why don't you start your transformation a little bit sooner tonight, huh?"

Kai held his hand toward Tory, using magic to make her start transforming now.

Tory's scream was magically causing everyone pain, including Kai, making everyone hold their heads, frozen where they were. Tory's bones broke even more, making her fall to the floor and scream in pain. "No!"

The same instant Tory screamed and fell to her knees, all of the glasses and windows shattered, causing everyone in their seats to duck to avoid from being in a glass avalanche, causing everyone one the altar fall to the floor.

When Elena made impact, she slammed her head against the floor, seemingly unconscious.

Alex and Liv desperately pulled Elena closer to them, looking worriedly devastated.

The wedding ceremony continued to erupt into chaos.

Elena's Mind Space

Night - Street

Damon was lying in the middle of the abandoned road, in his tuxedo.

Elena walked closer, in her bridesmaid's dress. "What are you doing?"

"Waiting for you," Damon answered.

"On the ground where we first met?" Elena asked.

Damon stood, walking toward Elena, trying to keep his expression neutral. "I'm feeling symbolic."

Damon and Elena kissed for a long moment.

Elena pulled away. "It's bad, isn't it?"

Damon hesitated. "I believe you owe me a dance, Miss Gilbert."

"Damon, just tell me," Elena told him. "How bad is it?"

Damon hesitated. "Dance with me, please."

Reality

Same Night - Same Scene

Night - Wedding Location - Altar House

The wedding ceremony had descended into chaos.

People were screaming across the room.

Some of the attendees of the party were already dead, and many more were injured or dying because of Tory's magic lashing out with her transformation.

Alex and Liv were kneeling on the floor at the altar, desperately trying to wake Elena.

"Elena?" Liv asked. Elena remained unconscious and limp in their arms. "Come on. Hey, wake up. Elena?"

Alex bit her wrist, trying to feed Elena vampire blood.

Tory was still transforming painfully, screaming, crying, her magic lashing out and making the entire building shake. "I can't stop! Please, make me stop."

Tory's bones broke more, making her scream. Blood stained her dress and skin.

The shaking of the building increased. Lights shattered, glass and electrical sparks raining down around them.

Where blood was coating the floor, fire was set aflame.

More people got injured. Some of them started to burn alive. They screamed and groaned and flailed in pain.

Luke knelt next to Tory, holding her to his chest.

Kacie stood next to them.

Ryan ran closer.

Lindsey stood from the carnage, raising an arm, making a sweeping motion, using magic to put the flames to rest.

"Luke, Kacie, get Tory out of here," Ryan told them.

Kacie and Luke nodded, grabbing Tory, rushing out of the building with her, leaving.

The shaking of the building started to subside, but not completely.

Alaric was at the altar, holding Jo's dead body, her blood staining his clothes and skin. He looked devastated to the point where he could do nothing but sob desperately. "Oh, God. Someone, please help."

Joshua struggled to stand, bracing himself on a chair, furious, looking around the room. "Kai!"

Alex was trying to feed Elena her blood, but she wasn't conscious enough to drink it. "Come on, just drink it." The blood simply dripped down Elena's chin. "No!"

Liv started to become distraught, looking around for the others. "Cristian? Damon!" Cristian and Damon had been knocked backward by Tory's magic, standing, covered with blood from the broken glass and projectiles hitting them, walking closer in alarm. "She won't wake up."

"Oh, my God," Alex told them.

"She won't wake up," Liv told them. "I don't understand."

"Take her to the hospital," Alex told them. "Now. We have to make sure everyone else is okay."

Cristian nodded. "Yeah."

Damon took Elena's body from Alex and Liv, rushing out, leaving.

Cristian helped Liv stand. They rushed out, following Damon, leaving.

Ryan took Lindsey's hand, leading her to the door. "Let's get you out of here, now."

"Ryan, wait, what about--" Lindsey started.

Ryan turned to face her. "Lindsey, you were right. Kai is out. If Kai is out, then who else do you think is out?"

Lindsey started to breathe heavily. "Oh, my God."

"Like I said," Ryan told her. "Let's get you out of here."

Lindsey nodded.

Ryan and Lindsey ran out, leaving.

Kaylin was as bad as the others, but it wasn't as noticeable against her red dress. She walked toward Stefan, worrying. "I can't find her."

Stefan held Kaylin's shoulders. "Nikki?" Kaylin nodded. "It's okay. We'll find her."

Stefan helped Alex stand.

Eliza was lying on the floor, impaled by a large piece of glass in her stomach from Tory's magic. She was badly burned from the fire that Tory and started and Lindsey had stopped, gasping, groaning in pain.

Caroline saw Eliza, kneeling next to her worriedly. "Eliza? Eliza, hey. Hang on. Just hang on a sec." She was trying not to cry, taking the glass out of her stomach, making Eliza cry out in pain. "Sorry! I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Shh." She bit her wrist, making her drink her blood. Eliza's burns and stomach wound started to heal. "You're okay. Shh. You're okay."

Kaylin, Stefan and Alex walked closer.

"Eliza?" Kaylin asked. "Eliza, you okay?"

Eliza breathed heavily, nodding. "Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine."

Kaylin, Stefan and Alex's necks were snapped with magic. They fell to the floor, unconscious.

Caroline turned to see what was going on. Her neck was snapped. She fell unconscious.

Eliza looked up in confused horror.

Kai was standing in front of Eliza. "Nothing personal, but this is a family matter now." He smiled reassuringly, his voice so sweet it was creepy. "At least you'll come back like they will." He turned to see Alaric. Alaric was leaving with Jo's body before he could be killed. "Tsk. Oh."

Joshua walked in, holding an Ascendant in his hand, chanting. "Sanguinem filio. Sanguinem effurgarex perpetuum."

Kai sighed. "Let me guess. Prison world?"

The other Gemini Coven members who were still alive, even while injured, began to chant as well. "Sanguinem filio. Sanguinem effurgarex perpetuum."

"I mean, you can't kill me," Kai told them. "Or else you all die, too, right?" He looked at a terrified Eliza with fake sympathy. "Hey, I'm sorry about ruining your perfectly coordinated wedding. And the bride. I just don't feel like competing for leadership with future Gemini twins." He knelt next to Eliza, picking up the piece of glass that had been impaled in her stomach. "See... when your family decides that you're nothing but an irredeemable piece of trash, well... I guess the best thing to do is prove them right, right?" He drove the broken piece of glass into Eliza's heart, making her gasp in pain. "Enjoy an eternity of vampirisim, Eliza." Eliza started to drift off, gasping. Kai put a hand on her cheek. "Shh." He pulled the glass out of her chest, letting her fall next to the unconscious vampire bodies. Eliza took her last human breath, drifting off into death. Kai smirked, standing to face the still-chanting witches, turning to face Joshua. "This ought to do it."

Kai stabbed himself in the neck with the broken piece of glass.

"No!" Joshua told him, horrified.

Kai smirked weakly, falling to the floor next to Eliza and the unconscious vampires, gasping for breath, drifting off into death.

Elena's Mind Space

Day - Woods

Elena and Alaric were in work-out gear, sparring with each other.

Elena punched the pads on Alaric's hands, gesturing to him to give her more. "You're going easy on me. Come on. This is supposed to be a special moment."

Elena punched the pads.

Alaric became so overwhelmed he stopped. "Yeah, no. I can't do this."

Alaric pulled off the padded gloves, tossing them aside, walking away.

Elena followed him, shaking her head. "Don't do that. Don't give up like that."

"Why not?" Alaric asked, turning away. "I have nothing left to fight for."

Alaric walked toward a punching dummy, beginning to punch it furiously, devastatingly with his bare hands.

Elena walked up behind Alaric, wrapping her arms around his shoulders tightly so he couldn't move, embracing him comfortingly, sadly.

Reality

Night - Lockwood Cellar

Luke and Kacie pushed Tory inside, standing in the way of her and the exit.

Tory turned to Luke and Kacie, rabid, growling furiously, taken over by the full moon, her eyes glowing gold, trying to get out.

Luke rushed in Tory's way. "Ah-ah. I wouldn't do that if I were you."

Tory leaped toward Luke and Kacie.

Luke and Kacie caught Tory in midair, keeping her at arms' length.

Tory snipped at their arms.

Kacie looked at Luke. "See? These are the days that I'm actually glad to be a hybrid, Luke. We're both immune to her bite."

"Me and you both," Luke told her. Tory used magic to cause them enough pain to make them let her go, falling to the floor. The cellar shook all around them violently. Luke groaned in pain. "Guess we should've seen that one coming."

Tory tried to rush past them.

Luke turned to grab Tory, pulling her back into the cellar.

Kacie rushed out, leaving.

 ------

Outside

Kacie closed the door, barricading it from the outside to make it harder on Tory to get out. She could still hear Tory's growling and screaming and Luke's one-sided complaints. She sighed. Her phone rang. She pulled it out, seeing it was Bonnie calling, walking up the steps into the woods above ground to answer the call away from the noise.

"Kacie!" Bonnie told her.

Kacie sighed in relief. "Ah. Bonnie Bennett. You have no idea how good it is to hear your voice right now."

Bonnie was in the kitchen of the Salvatore Boarding House, where Matt was helping her bandage her slit wrists. "Kacie, Kai's out."

"I know," Kacie told her. "I'm glad you're safe. I was worried Kai already got to you."

"He did," Bonnie told her. "And I don't know how, but I'm still alive. He drained my blood and that's all."

Matt was bandaging Bonnie's wrists.

"That's not all," Kacie told her grimly. "He was at the wedding. Jo's dead. He killed her. He made Tory start the transformation in the middle of the ceremony. He made her kill dozens of people, Bon."

Bonnie looked at Matt in concern, horrified. "Oh, my God."

Matt looked at Bonnie in confusion.

"Luke and I got Tory to the Lockwood Cellar," Kacie told her. "Lindsey's getting Ryan to their cellar before he starts to change. And Elena got knocked out, and she's not waking up. But if Kai's out, so are Lily's friends, and if Lily's friends are out..." She looked toward the sound of Tory's growling and screaming, shaking her head, sighing. "I don't know what to do, Bon."

"Stay there," Bonnie told her. "Okay? I'm coming."

 ------

On the Road - Van

Enzo was driving.

Kaylin was unconscious in the passenger seat.

Caroline was unconscious on one side of the back. Eliza was lying dead next to her.

Alex and Stefan were unconscious on the other side of the back. Alex had her head on Stefan's chest.

Kaylin slowly woke tiredly, looking at Enzo.

"Good, you're up," Enzo told her. "Sorry to be indecorous, but you were all solidly unconscious when I pulled you from the wedding mayhem."

"Where are we going?" Kaylin asked. "Where's Damon?"

"Damon is in the hospital with Elena, Liv and Cristian," Enzo answered. "Luke, Lindsey and Kacie are getting a handle on Tory and Ryan. Kai is dead, and all the Geminis are going down with him. He killed himself, but not before he killed Eliza." Kaylin looked into the back to look at Eliza's dead body in worry. "With Caroline's blood in her system."

Kaylin looked at Eliza's body in shock, realizing what this meant. "Oh, my God. Eliza's gonna become..."

"Yeah," Enzo answered.

Kaylin looked at Enzo, remembering. "Nikki."

"I couldn't find Nicola in the mess," Enzo told her. "I'm sure she's fine. And I grabbed you to help me deal with a bigger problem."

"There's a bigger problem?" Kaylin asked in exasperation.

Enzo looked at Kaylin.

 ------

Warehouse District

The van pulled up.

Lily was desperately opening warehouse door after warehouse door, looking for someone. "Valerie? Malcolm?"

Lily realized that there was no one in the storage space, closing the door.

Kaylin got out of the van, sighing in annoyance, walking toward Lily. "Get in the car, please.'

"1702 Route 12," Lily told her. "That's--that's where we are, right? I mean, I read the map very carefully. He--he said they would be here. They're probably scared out of their minds."

"Who are you talking about?" Kaylin asked.

Lily opened the door to another storage space, searching through it. "My friends. Kai brought them back when he escaped that prison." She looked around the room, seeing that there was nothing there. She turned to face Kaylin. "They're here, somewhere."

Kaylin sighed. "He lied to you. There's nobody out here. You made a deal with a sociopath, and now a lot of people are dead, because he used Tory to create chaos. You're wasting your time."

Lily ignored her, walking away.

 ------

Van

Caroline, Alex and Stefan were just now waking.

Caroline noticed Eliza's dead body, gasping in horror and denial. "No. No, no, no, Eliza. Eliza!" Alex and Stefan looked at Eliza in denial, horrified. Caroline started to cry. "You can't be dead. Eliza, you can't be gone."

"Caroline..." Alex trailed off.

Caroline looked up. "What?"

"You gave her your blood," Alex told her.

"What?" Caroline asked.

"You healed her," Alex told her.

Caroline looked as if she was just remembering the truth behind her words. She realized what it meant, looking at Eliza. "Oh, my God." Eliza gasped alive, sitting up, breathing heavily. Caroline held her shoulders comfortingly. "Hey. Hey, hey, hey. It's okay. It's okay. Shh."

Eliza tried to take in her surroundings, overwhelmed and confused. "What's happening?"

Caroline tried to get Eliza to calm down. "Eliza, it's okay. Just take a second. Settle down."

"Care, what's happening?" Eliza asked.

"You might as well tell her," Enzo told them. "Best to get the nasty part out of the way right out of the gate."

"Shut up, Enzo," Stefan told him.

"Stefan?" Eliza asked. "Alex? What's going on?"

"What do you remember?" Stefan asked.

Eliza had to think for a long moment. "The wedding. Kai. Tory changing. People dying. Liv, Damon and Cristian taking Elena to the hospital. Luke, Tory and Kacie getting Ryan and Tory locked up." She looked at Caroline. "You healing me. Kai snapping your guys' and Kaylin's necks." She looked at the two bloodstains on her dress where the glass had been. "That's--that's it. That's all I remember." She noticed that the second bloodstain was over her heart, worried and starting to realize what it meant. She seemed to remember what had happened. "Oh, my God."

"Eliza," Stefan told her, hands on her shoulders, helping her sit up and lean against the wall of the van, trying to keep her calmed down. "You died with Caroline's blood in your system. You're in transition, Eliza."

Eliza was in too much shock to take it all in.

 ------

Lindsey and Ryan's House - Basement

Ryan was very well into his transformation, a complete wolf.

Lindsey walked ahead of Ryan the wolf calmly, using magic to keep Ryan on a leash that pulled him with her into their cellar, but refrained him from trying to attack her. She held a hand toward Ryan the wolf. "Nec movent." Ryan the wolf froze where he was. "Sic ad somnum proficisci." Ryan the wolf fell asleep, falling to the floor in a heap. Lindsey sighed heavily, walking out of the cellar, closing the door, turning to face the door, placing a hand over it, closing her eyes in concentration, whispering the spell. "Donec revertar claudat ostia pulsantes. Nemo potest relinquere. Don't worry, Ryan. I'll be back soon."

Lindsey sighed, exhausted and overwhelmed from all the day's events, walking away, leaving.

 ------

Warehouse District

Kaylin was continuing to try to get Lily to leave with her while she stubbornly searched the various warehouses. "Let me guess. Not there either."

"Did you come all this way to mock me?" Lily asked.

"No," Kaylin answered. "I came here to put you back in your cell where you belong."

"Do I look like a Ripper, Kaylin?" Lily asked. "I've said repeatedly that the hope of being reunited with my family is enough to overcome the urges."

"Would you please stop it with the word 'family'?" Kaylin asked in exasperation. "They're just a bunch of random people that happened to help you strong arm a witch into making more of them."

"We spent a century and a half together," Lily told her. "We're loyal to each other. Our relationship is a deeper bond than I have ever known. What other word would I use?"

"Lily, you either come with me right now, or you're out of my life," Kaylin told her. "Do you understand me? Your daughter."

Lily gave Kaylin a cold look, walking past her. "I'm sorry."

Kaylin looked hurt yet unsurprised.

 ------

Wedding Location

Alaric walked toward his car with Jo in his arms, gently laying her in the truck of his SUV, laying a blanket over her body. He looked at her in devastation.

 ------

Altar House

Kai gasped alive, sitting up, pulling the shard of glass out of his neck. He smirked in satisfaction, looking at the bleeding-out Joshua on the floor. "Here's to being different, Dad."

 ------

Elsewhere

Nicola was walking through the carnage, splashed with blood, but fine. She looked around. "Kaylin? Stefan?" She looked around at all of the dead of bleeding, dying horribly people of the Gemini Coven. "Damon?" She was taken with the hunger momentarily, transforming hungrily. She closed her eyes, taking a deep breath, returning to normal, opening her eyes. She looked around desperately, putting a hand to her head. "Tyler!"

She could hear Tyler coughing weakly further on. "Nikki." Nicola turned to see Tyler lying next to a dying horribly, bleeding Gemini male, a large piece of glass embedded into his stomach. "Nikki."

Nicola shook her head, barely able to breathe. "Ty. Ty, no." She rushed toward him, kneeling next to Tyler instantly. "This isn't happening. You're not dying on me." She pulled the glass out of his stomach, making him groan in pain. "I'm sorry."

"It's okay," Tyler told her weakly, taking one of Nicola's hands. Nicola looked at the blood hungrily for a moment, fighting through it, raising her wrist to her mouth to bite. She was magically thrown back across the floor. Tyler looked at Nicola in worry. "Nikki!"

Nicola looked up, breathing heavily.

Kai stalked closer to Nicola. "Nicola Salvatore. Little niece Nikki. Just the girl I'm looking for." He held a hand toward a broken wooden chair, using magic to throw a broken chair leg into Nicola's stomach, making her gasp and groan in pain. "Did you really believe that you could do what you did with the little stunt to get the hex taken away and not pay the consequences?"

Nicola slid away from Kai weakly, a hand around the stake. "What I did to Jo was nothing compared to what you've done to all of us."

Nicola tried to pull the stake out of her stomach.

Kai used magic to push it back in, making Nicola moan in pain. "Oh, no, I couldn't care less about Jo anymore. What you, Bonnie and Kacie did? It cured me of any feelings I might have had before. Thank God. No, I'm talking about..." He used magic to tilt the stake toward Nicola's heart, making her groan a scream. Tyler was still watching in weak, worried horror. "The feelings you made me feel. Guilt. Sadness." Kai used magic to tilt the stake further toward Nicola's heart. "Helplessness." He stepped closer using magic to drive the stake further in, making Nicola slide further away, groaning and gasping. Tyler turned to the weak, nearly dead Gemini male next to him, picking up the piece of glass that had been in his stomach. Kai knelt in front of Nicola, pushing the stake in further. Nicola gazed off, seeing snippets of the hex, the images, the pain that it had brought, only a hundred times worse. "You see that? You went through all that trouble to get the hex taken away only to die with it again. You get to die seeing every moment of pain, sadness, loneliness, despair, grief or helplessness you've ever experienced. Which is practically every day of your pathetic, little life. Allow me to put you out of your misery."

Nicola looked as the only thing she could see was what Kai wanted her to see, unable to fight back.

Kai pulled the stake out of Nicola, raising it to finish her off.

They could hear bones breaking, Tyler groaning and screaming.

Kai looked toward Tyler.

Tyler was starting to transform into a wolf.

The Gemini male had the glass staked into his chest, dead.

Tyler looked up with glowing gold eyes, lunging at Kai angrily, tackling him off of Nicola, making them both roll across the floor. He snipped at Kai angrily.

Kai held a hand toward Tyler, using the pain infliction spell to stop him, using magic to push Tyler off of him. He stood, trying to step toward Tyler. He couldn't move, looking toward the door.

Lindsey stood there, holding a hand toward Kai, using magic to keep him still. "Take the hex away from her."

"Now why would I do that?" Kai asked in amusement.

Lindsey used magic to break Kai's bones, making him groan in pain. "My blood's the only thing that can turn you. Take it off of her, now." Kai glared at Lindsey, looking toward Nicola. Nicola looked as if the hex was taken away, sighing in relief. She stood, looking over the scene. Lindsey looked at Nicola, nodding to Tyler. "Get him out of here."

Nicola walked toward Tyler.

Tyler growled, starting to transform more, bones breaking.

Nicola rushed away, leaving.

Tyler rushed after Nicola, leaving.

Kai looked at Lindsey. "For a supernatural creature, werewolves are really easy to set aside. Speed up the transformation, slow down the transformation, it makes them totally useless."

Lindsey scoffed knowingly. "Oh, you think so, huh?"

Kai nodded, stepping closer. "Yep. So, Lily's friend Malcolm gave me some of his blood when we got back from the prison world. And lucky me, Malcolm's a Heretic. And I just killed myself to make a spell permanent and to kill the entirety of the Gemini Coven." Lindsey tried to stay expressionless. "So, now, in order to become one of Lily's Heretics, all I need is one little thing." Kai smirked. "Your blood."

Kai rushed toward Lindsey.

Lindsey held a hand toward Kai to stop him. "Ossox!" Kai's leg broke, making him fall to his knees. Kai chuckled, holding his leg, healing, standing. "Again!"

Kai's bones broke. He fell to the floor. He laughed. "By all means, fire away. We had a deal. I let Nicola go, you let me feed. Of course, I don't take anybody's word around here for much."

"I never said I'd let you get it," Lindsey told him.

Kai waited for himself to heal, standing, turning to Lindsey. "You're the only thing that can help me completely my transition, Lindsey. I'm not going anywhere."

Lindsey raised a hand toward Kai. "Sic ad som--"

Kai held a hand toward Lindsey, using magic to strangle her, making her stop. "What was that? I thought you were trying to put me to sleep. Clever. Not bad, Davis. Not bad. Just gotta be faster than that. Ossox."

The hand Lindsey held toward Kai broke, making her cry out.

Kai smirked, rushing toward Lindsey, pushing her against the wall, biting her on the neck, feeding.

Lindsey screamed in pain.

Elena's Mind Space

Day - Wickery Bridge

Matt and Elena were standing on the bridge.

Elena was holding a large bunch of dandelions. She handed some of them to Matt, smiling. "Here. Say it."

"No," Matt told her. "I'm not doing this."

Elena shrugged. "Fine." She turned to face the river. "I'll say it. Here lies Elena Gilbert. A fun girlfriend, a good friend, and an amazing sister."

Elena tossed the flowers into the water below, laughing.

Matt was still in denial that this was happening. "I'm glad one of us can find humor in this."

"I have to find humor in this, Matt," Elena told him. "Because the alternative..." She hesitated. "The alternative would be to say goodbye, and I'm just... I'm not ready for that yet."

 ------

Reality

Night - Wedding Location - Altar House

Kai was still feeding on Lindsey.

Kacie rushed closer, pulling Kai off of Lindsey, pushing him back, standing between them.

Kai chuckled. "Oh. I finally turned myself into one of Lily's Heretics. It's really incredible, actually." Lindsey pushed away from the wall, holding a hand to her bleeding neck. "I can literally siphon the magic of my vampirism and convert it into more magic. Thank you, Lindsey, really." Lindsey glared at him. Kai smirked, looking at Kacie. "Wonder Woman to the rescue, huh? You know, Kacie, you're probably wondering why Bonnie's still alive, and why I'm not trying to kill you right now, since I should. I mean, that's what you deserve. You left me behind in 1903, which I did not appreciate, but I guess you forgot about that old Canadian rock filled with Rosalita's blood. Anyway, even though I got out, I kind of just want to make you two suffer, in new, and, if I may say so myself, totally inspired ways."

"What the hell are you talking about?" Kacie asked. Kai smirked. Kacie rushed toward Kai, pushing him against the wall, transforming. "One thing you're not gonna do? You're not gonna mess with me. I am in a very volatile place right now, and I will start biting people that I don't like, starting with you, if you don't tell me what the hell you are doing."

"All right," Kai told her. "I killed Eliza." Kacie and Lindsey looked at him in denial and horror. "Oh, but don't worry. She had Caroline's blood in her system, so she should be in transition by now. And I linked Elena's life to Bonnie's. The rule is as long as Bonnie's alive, Elena will remain asleep."

Kacie was in disbelief. "Oh, my God." She looked at Kai in angry disbelief. "Please tell me you didn't."

Kai smiled. "Oh, I totally did." "Oh, Lindsey, you and Tory should not go looking for some weird witchy work-around, because as the incredibly powerful leader of the Gemini's, I rigged this so that if you do try to outsmart it, both Bonnie and Elena will die. Instantly." He looked at Kacie. "I guess what I'm trying to say is your and Bonnie's betrayal really hurt me, Kacie. So, this? Eliza's new-found vampire status? Elena as the new Sleeping Beauty? It's kind of all your fault." Kacie took a furious breath, biting Kai on the neck, poisoning him with hybrid venom, pulling away, turning around, throwing him into the wall across the room, making him fall to the floor. Kai chuckled, standing, holding a hand to his neck. "Bad doggie."

"That's hybrid venom in your veins, jackass," Kacie told him. "You're going to die. But there's a cure in New Orleans. Undo the spell and I'll get it for you."

"Oh, no can do, kangaroo," Kai told her. "When I killed myself and became a Heretic, my death made the spell permanent. There's no undoing it. And think about it, Kacie. Your best friend Eliza is in transition. She still has yet to decide whether she lives or dies. And your best friend Elena will remain asleep until the day that your best friend Bonnie dies. What are you going to do?"

Lindsey held a hand toward Kai angrily. "Motus!"

A fallen beam from the wreckage soared toward Kai.

Kai rushed away, making it shatter against the wall behind him.

Lindsey was devastated and concerned.

Kacie was enraged yet guilty, overwhelmed.

Kacie and Lindsey didn't know what to do.

Salvatore Boarding House - Cell

Nicola rushed down into the basement, into the cell.

Tyler the wolf rushed in after her.

Nicola turned to face him. "Tyler..." Tyler the wolf lunged toward Nicola. Nicola rushed out of the way into the left side wall, making him hit the wall she had been standing in front of, making him fall to the floor. "Ty, please!" Tyler the wolf stood. Nicola rushed out of the cell into the hallway outside, turning to face the door. Tyler the wolf lunged toward Nicola. Nicola closed the door between them before he got to her, making him hit the door and fall to the floor. Nicola locked the door tightly. Tyler the wolf growled viciously. Nicola sighed, shaking her head. "This shouldn't be happening to you right now. You never wanted this to happen again." Tyler the wolf continued to growl, backing away from the door, charging at it, trying to bust through the door. Nicola used all of her strength to keep it closed. "I'm sorry. Just a little while longer, and all of this will be over." Tyler the wolf backed away from the door, charging at it again, making Nicola stumble only slightly. Nicola continued to keep the door closed. "I'm so sorry."

Elena's Mind Space

Day - Gilbert House - Outside

Elena and Liv were sitting on the front porch of the Gilbert House.

Liv looked around, only slightly relieved. "I never thought I would see this place again." Elena smiled sadly. Liv looked at Elena. "And you chose our childhood home that you and Alex burned down after me and Jer died as a place to say goodbye?"

"This isn't goodbye, Liv," Elena told her. They both had tears in her eyes. "You're my little sister. Other than Alex and Jeremy, you know me better than anyone. Which is why you already know how impossible it is for me to--to find the words to say goodbye. But, Liv, you're a vampire. You'll see me again. This is not goodbye."

Liv shook her head, overwhelmed, tears in her eyes. "Don't. I can't do this, Elena. Not--not now. Not ever."

Liv started to cry silently, looking down.

Elena started to cry, embracing Liv, laying her sister's head on her own shoulder.

Reality

Night - Mystic Falls Hospital - Elena's Hospital Room

(Song:) Tell Me How to Feel - Maggie Eckford

Liv let go of Elena's hand to return to reality.

Cristian walked in.

"Cristian?" Liv asked. "Where's Damon?"

"Kacie and Lindsey called," Cristian told her. "They know where Kai is. He used Lindsey's blood to turn himself into a Heretic."

Liv looked at him worriedly. "What? Is Lindsey okay?"

"Yeah," Cristian answered. "Damon may be an idiot, but he's not an idiot enough to try to go after Kai alone. He asked for my help to go beat the sleeping spell out of him. We're gonna be leaving any minute." Liv couldn't look away from Elena, nodding. Cristian stepped closer. "This whole thing with Elena... If we can't break the spell, are you gonna be okay?"

Liv looked at Cristian, tears in her eyes. "Of course not. But when she wakes up, she'll still be my sister. After Bonnie's lived a long and happy life. But there are people that I'll never see again. Jo. Her babies. Alaric has to be so... broken. And I don't know how to help him. I'm not Alex and Elena, Cris. I don't know how to help people the way that they help people. I just--I can't."

Cristian sighed, pulling Liv closer. "It's gonna be okay, Liv. I'm gonna find Kai, and I'm gonna give it everything I have to try to find a way to bring Elena back."

"But you don't know if you can," Liv finished. "It's okay. It... it has to be."

Cristian looked at Liv sympathetically, kissing her forehead, embracing her.

Liv closed her eyes, letting a few tears fall.

Cristian let go.

Liv opened her eyes to see that he was already gone.

Empty Hospital Room

Eliza was still too numb and too much in shock to do much of anything.

Caroline walked closer from behind her. "Eliza..."

Eliza looked down. "So, this is it, huh? I either feed or I die."

Caroline could barely speak over a whisper. "Yeah." Eliza sniffled, overwhelmed and not knowing what to do. "Look, you don't have to say anything. You--you have time to choose. You just..." Caroline was trying not to cry. "I can't make this decision for you."

Eliza slowly turned to face Caroline. "I already know what my decision's gonna be, Caroline. Dad chose not to turn, and we both had to watch him die. Mom got sick, and we both had to watch her die. You turned your humanity off because you couldn't handle it. I can't--I can't just... fade away like that. Not after everything. I can't do that to you. I can't do that to anyone. I mean, we're losing Elena, and we just lost Jo." She looked as if she was finally accepting what was happening, starting to cry. "I can't. I just--I--I--I can't."

Eliza started to cry harder.

Caroline embraced Eliza, crying, holding her as she cried.

Wedding Location - Altar House

Kacie and Kai were circling around each other.

"I mean, did you honestly think that you could keep screwing people over and there would be no consequences?" Kai asked. "Really, Kacie?" He looked around the dead bodies. "Hello? Anyone still alive, hmm? Anyone alive, just raise your hand. I need blood."

Bonnie walked in. "You need more than blood. Maybe some ointment? 'Cause gross."

Bonnie pointed to her own neck, indicating Kai's hybrid bite.

Kai laughed sarcastically. "Do your friends think you're funny?" He looked at Kacie and Lindsey. "Do you think she's funny?" He looked at Bonnie. "Because maybe if you were funny, if you were the one with the good jokes, who they can always count on to make them laugh, maybe they'd be cool with letting you live instead of Elena."

Bonnie shrugged. "So, the sick humor's your thing. Me and Lindsey? We're just the ones that do magic."

Bonnie and Lindsey exchanged a look, nodding, raising their hands toward Kai, using the pain infliction spell, making him yell in pain.

"You said that your death made it permanent," Kacie told him. "So it does no good in trying to get you to undo the spell, right? And I bit you, Kai. You're dying. And we're gonna have fun in watching you die. But doesn't mean Bonnie and Lindsey can't have their fun until then."

Kai held a hand over his hybrid bite. After a moment, his hand started to glow, healing the bite. "The thing is, Kacie, the only way a girl like you turns into a wolf is if it's magic, right? So, technically, your venom's magic, too. So, I just went ahead and siphoned it up."

Kai turned to face Kacie, using magic to snap her neck, letting her fall to the floor. He used magic to levitate Bonnie and Lindsey into the air.

Lindsey struggled. "No! No!"

Kai looked at Lindsey. "You, Lindsey, I and the other Heretics will need later on down the road. We need you alive." He looked at Bonnie. "You, Bon-Bon? Not so much. Motus!"

Kai gestured one of his raised hands toward Bonnie, using magic to throw her backward into a wall, making her fall to the floor. He looked at Lindsey.

Lindsey seemed as if she couldn't breathe, gasping for air. She slipped into unconsciousness, still levitating in the air.

Kai smirked.

Elena's Mind Space

Night - Road

Damon and Elena were in their wedding attire.

Damon took Elena's hands in his, trying to be positive. "Just dance with me. This was supposed to be our big night."

"Tell me, Damon," Elena told him. "I can see it all over your face. How bad is it?"

Damon hesitated, sighing. "Kai linked you to Bonnie." Elena was horrified, letting go of his hands, taking a step back. "You won't wake up until she dies."

"What?" Elena asked.

"He won, Elena," Damon told her.

"What are you gonna do?" Elena asked in concern. "Damon? Damon?"

The vision blurred.

Reality

Night - Wedding Location - Altar House

Bonnie was collapsed on the floor, gasping for breath, bleeding profusely.

Lindsey was still unconscious, levitating in the air.

Kacie was still lying on the floor with a broken neck.

Damon and Cristian walked in.

Damon saw Bonnie, running to her side, kneeling next to her. "Bonnie."

"Damon," Bonnie told him in relief. "Cristian."

"Hey," Damon told her.

Cristian walked toward where Lindsey was levitating unconsciously in the air weirdly. "Okay. Lindsey!"

Cristian was about to jump into the air to bring Lindsey down. He stopped when he heard something.

Kai walked out of the shadows, looking at Damon incredulously. "How dumb are you? I deliver you a dying Bonnie Bennett on a silver platter, and woosh, right over your head."

Bonnie gasped for breath. "Cristian."

"You're okay," Cristian told her.

"Cristian..." Bonnie trailed off.

"Uh, translation," Kai told them. "She's about to croak."

"Cristian," Bonnie told him.

Kai cast a pain infliction spell on Cristian to stop him from helping Bonnie, looking at Damon. "Of course, you don't have to help her. You could just walk away. She dies of collapsed lung, no blood on your hands, and you and Elena get to live the life you always dreamed of." Damon considered this for a moment, looking conflicted. "The only trouble is, the only person who would know would be Cristian." He looked at Damon. "But I'll help you take care of him. A little birdie told me you two don't really get along, bicker like no tomorrow but you work well together. Either way, you better act quick."

"I'm so sorry," Damon told them.

Bonnie looked at Damon in horrified confusion.

Damon kissed Bonnie's forehead, letting go of her hand.

Bonnie rolled to her other side, betrayed.

Damon stood, turning to face Cristian.

Cristian raised his eyebrows slightly. "Really? You're gonna let Elena's best friend and her little sister Liv's boyfriend die for her to wake up? When she finds out, she's not gonna speak to you again."

"There's no reason for her to find out, Cristian," Damon told him, looking at Kai, nodding.

Kai was very unsatisfied, exasperated. "That's it? The whole point was that this would torture all of you for a while. I mean, you'd think you'd at least flip a coin. Heads, you let Bonnie and Cristian here live, tails, you--" Damon and Cristian exchanged a look, nodding, rushing toward Kai. Kai held a hand toward Damon and Cristian to stop them, using magic to cause them pain. "So I guess the rumor of you two not really getting along but working well together and bickering like no tomorrow are true. You thought I'd fall for that?"

Cristian groaned in pain. "Not really. We were counting that you wouldn't."

Kai looked at Damon and Cristian in confusion. He looked toward where Kacie's unconscious had been, noticing that she wasn't there now, turning around.

Damon and Cristian were still in pain.

Damon fell to his knees, groaning in pain.

Cristian powered through the pain infliction spell, grabbing Kai from behind, restraining him.

Kacie stood in front of Kai, using an ax to behead Kai, killing him, watching the head fall to the floor, smiling in satisfaction. "Heads, it is." Damon and Cristian were freed from Kai's pain spell, breathing heavily, looking at Kacie. Damon stood. Cristian let the body fall to the floor. Kacie smirked, raising her eyebrows slightly, shrugging. "And I finally got revenge by cutting off his after he cut off mine."

Damon chuckled in amusement.

Lindsey was freed from Kai's levitating spell, falling to the floor.

Cristian rushed toward Lindsey, catching her in his arms before she landed as badly as Bonnie had, turning to face Damon and Kacie. "Hey, Lindsey."

Damon and Kacie ran to Bonnie's side, kneeling next to her on either side.

Bonnie looked between them, breathing heavily in surprise.

"You think I was gonna leave you all alone, huh?" Damon asked. Kacie bit her wrist, putting it to Bonnie's lips. Bonnie drank her blood to heal frantically. "No way. I'm not out of nicknames for you yet."

Kacie took her wrist away from Bonnie's lips.

Cristian walked out with Lindsey in a cradle, leaving.

Damon picked Bonnie up in a cradle, walking out, leaving.

Kacie stood, following Damon and Cristian with Lindsey and Bonnie in their arms, walking out, leaving.

Lockwood Cellar

Tory was lying unconscious on the stone floor. Luke's tuxedo jacket was lying over her. She looked at the wedding attire she had worn the night before torn to shreds next to her.

Luke sat next to Tory, cradling her head in his lap. "Hey. You're okay."

Tory remembered what happened, breathing heavily. "Oh, my God."

"Tory..." Luke trailed off.

"Kai, he... he made me transform at the wedding," Tory told him. "I remember what he made me do, Luke. The pain was so much worse last night. And the magic was so much stronger. All those people..." She slowly sat up, but still too weak and exhausted to sit up all the way. "Did I kill anybody?"

Luke took a moment to respond, shaking his head. "No. You didn't kill anyone."

Tory looked away in guilt, tears in her eyes. "You were always a horrible liar."

"I'm not lying," Luke told her. "It wasn't your fault. You didn't do all of that. It was Kai."

"No, Kai made the transformation start there," Tory told him. "All of the magic, all of the destruction caused, all of the people that died... that's on me. I killed all of those people."

"No, you didn't," Luke told her. "Some of them were still alive when we left." Tory started to cry. "Hey. Hey, hey, hey." Luke pulled her closer, leaning his forehead against hers. "This is not your fault. Don't you even begin to think that. Last night was not on you." Tory didn't answer, crying silently. "Tory. Tor, hey."

Luke sighed, pulling Tory into his arms comfortingly.

Tory started to cry into Luke's shoulder, returning the embrace, knowing that dozens of people were dead now because of her.

Salvatore Boarding House - Basement

Nicola was sitting outside the door of the cell. She saw sunlight coming in through the open doorway upstairs, standing, turning to face the door, unlocking it. "Oh, my God."

Cell

Nicola walked toward Tyler, lying her jacket over him. "Hey." Tyler stirred awake. "Hey." Nicola knelt next to Tyler, sympathetic and concerned, reassuring. "I'm here. You're okay."

Tyler exhaled shakily, shaking his head, still exhausted and in pain. "No, I'm not."

Nicola held Tyler close in guilt. "Kaylin called. There's something you need to know."

Mystic Falls Hospital - Empty Hospital Room

Eliza sat alone, looking at the blood bag in her hand, hungry and tired.

Caroline slowly walked closer, sitting next to Eliza. They both had tears in their eyes. They both couldn't handle this right now.

Eliza nodded reassuringly, looking at the blood bag, knowing what her choice was going to be.

Day Two

Morning - Salvatore Boarding House - Living Room

(Song:) Long Long Way - Damien Rice

Kaylin opened the door to find Tory, Lindsey, Luke and Ryan on the front step, ushering them inside into the living room.

Alaric, Matt, Tyler, Eliza, Bonnie, Caroline, Kacie, Alex, Liv and Cristian were already there.

Kaylin closed the door.

Nicola was standing on the other side of the doorway as Kaylin.

Stefan and Damon walked in, standing in between Nicola and Kaylin.

Nicola, Kaylin, Stefan and Damon looked over the others at each other.

Liv was so upset, trying to keep strong. "Oh, my God."

"Okay, let's do this," Kaylin told them. She looked at Eliza, Caroline, Bonnie, and Kacie. "You guys are up first."

 ------

Parlor

Alex, Eliza, Caroline, Bonnie and Kacie walked in.

Elena was lying in a coffin wearing a midnight blue dress.

Alex, Eliza, Caroline, Bonnie and Kacie looked at their best friend and Alex's sister sadly.

Caroline took Eliza's hand sadly, revealing it was the hand Eliza was now wearing a daylight ring. "It's easy, Eliza. We just take her hand.. close your eyes..." Eliza closed her eyes. "And let her into your thoughts."

Elena's Mind Space

Day - Gilbert House - Alex and Elena's Room

Alex, Elena, Caroline and Kacie were sitting on the floor in a circle, laughing.

Bonnie and Eliza walked in, carrying pillows and a blanket.

"Are we seriously having a sleepover?" Eliza asked.

"Come on, Bon," Caroline told her. "Hurry up and get in here. We're the ones who get to see her again. I mean, you should get the better goodbye."

"Oh, Care," Elena told her sadly. "Come here." She embraced Caroline. She pulled away, looking at Alex. "Take care of everyone while I'm gone, okay, Alex?"

Alex and Elena embraced.

Alex nodded, crying. "I will. I promise."

Alex and Elena pulled away.

Elena and Kacie embraced.

Bonnie and Eliza walked closer, sitting next to them.

Elena looked at Eliza tearfully. "Eliza..." Eliza started to cry. Elena pulled her closer. "You're gonna be okay. I promise. If anyone can do this, it's you. All of the best parts of you will be magnified. You'll still be caring. You'll still be deep. And you'll still be the main thing that keeps everybody from falling apart and living a halfway normal life."

Eliza chuckled sadly. "Even if I'm not normal anymore."

Elena smiled sadly, embracing Eliza.

Eliza returned the embrace, pulling away.

Bonnie and Kacie looked between Elena and Eliza in guilt.

"I'm so sorry," Bonnie told them.

Kacie nodded. "Really, I'm so sorry."

Elena smiled. "Kacie, Bonnie, this isn't your fault."

Bonnie and Kacie started to cry.

Eliza took Bonnie and Kacie's hands. "I'll be okay, because I have you too, and more, to help me get through this."

Bonnie and Kacie smiled sadly.

Elena took Bonnie's hands. "Hey. We'll all get everything that we want. We just can't have it at the same time." Caroline and Alex took Kacie and Eliza's hands. They stood, walking out, leaving. Elena wiped Bonnie's tears away. "Aw, hey. Bonnie Bennett, you have spent your entire life making sacrifices for me. Now it's my turn to do it for you. I just have one more favor to ask, since we're saying goodbye."

"Okay," Bonnie told her.

"Okay," Elena told her, ripping open her pillow, grabbing a handful of feathers, lying them out in front of them. "Can you do it one last time?"

Bonnie laughed through the tears, raising her hand, using magic to levitate all of the feathers around them.

Elena and Bonnie smiled, crying.

 ------

Day - Wickery Bridge

Matt and Elena were still on the bridge.

Matt was dressed in a Sheriff's uniform, throwing a bouquet of dandelions into the water below, sighing. "There. I did it. Are you happy?"

"Very," Elena answered. "Now it's your turn to be."

Matt looked at his uniform. "So, I'm a cop, huh?"

"That's my wish for you, Matt," Elena told him. "In our crazy lives together, you've always stayed the same. Human, loyal, good. My wish is that you spend the rest of your life fighting or people like you."

"You know, there's a good chance that I'll never see you again," Matt told her.

"Matt," Elena told him sadly, smiling. "Look at everything that the two of us have survived." They started to cry, embracing. Elena whispered. "I like our odds."

 ------

Mountain Range

Elena was standing on the mountain range.

Ryan and Luke walked closer.

"Is this what I think it is?" Luke asked.

Elena turned to face Ryan and Luke, smiling sadly. "It's your guys' home, back in Florida. Where you would just transform on the full moons out here in the open like this because there wasn't anyone within a hundred miles of this place. I don't know. I just... wanted someplace different to say goodbye to you guys at."

"Thanks, Elena," Ryan told her.

Elena smiled. "Luke, Ryan, I know that I never really got to know you guys before all of this happened. You know, except before you two moved away to be with your dad down here, before he died and you two had to come back to town." She gestured around the mountain range. "Luke, you were the angry, but cool-headed punk kid that tried to convince everybody that you didn't care about anything." Luke smirked. "Ryan, you... you were always just... you. You were the same way before you triggered the curse as you are now. Except a little bit angrier. But that's kinda expected from a couple of wolves." They chuckled. Elena returned serious. "You know, Lily's friends are gonna come after Tory and Lindsey. It's only a matter of time."

Luke nodded. "Yeah, we know."

"I know that you don't need me to ask this of you, but..." Elena trailed off. "Just keep them safe. Help Kacie keep them safe. Please. They can't fight this battle on their own."

"Of course," Ryan told her.

"And protect yourselves," Elena told them. "Be more out there. Luke, Ryan, do something more with your lives. I know that you can't run from Mystic Falls because they will find you wherever you go, but... just be there. Not just for Tory and Lindsey. For everybody."

Ryan nodded. "We will."

"Bye, Elena," Luke told her.

Elena smiled sadly, embracing Ryan and Luke.

Ryan and Luke returned the embrace, pulling back, backing away, leaving.

 ------

Cristian's House - Living Room

Elena was looking at an old picture of Cristian, Pearl and Anna.

Cristian was leaning against the doorway, arms crossed over his chest. "You rang?"

Elena put the picture down, turning to face Cristian, smiling a small smile. "Yeah, I guess so." She looked around. "Hi, Cristian. You know, I only came here once during the girls party a year ago, but Nicola was trapped here." She looked at Cristian. "Liv's been with basically the entire time that you've been out of the tomb. And ever since then, ever since you met Liv, you've been protecting her, and fighting for her. And that's all I could really ask for. Someone to make my little sister happy, for her to have someone that would do that for her. You know her as well as I do, Cristian. She's not gonna take this well. She needs someone to help her get through it, and I'm pretty sure that the only one she'll let help her... is you."

"You don't have to ask me to look after Liv, Elena," Cristian told her. "You know I will."

"I know," Elena told him. "But that's my point. I just... want to thank you, Cristian. I mean, it's not only Liv that you've been fighting for. Kaylin. Trying to find a way to get back home. And whenever we can't do something, you're always first to volunteer. You're a warrior, Cristian. And I... can't thank you enough."

"Well, I'll keep on being that warrior," Cristian told her. "You don't have anything to worry about."

Elena smiled sadly. "Thank you." Elena and Cristian embraced, pulling away. "Keep them safe for me."

Cristian nodded.

 ------

Woods

Elena was standing behind Alaric, embracing him from behind.

Alaric tried not to cry.

"You're gonna think that the pain will never end, but it will," Elena told him. "But first, you have to let it all in. You can't fight it. It's bigger than you. You have to let yourself drown in it. But then eventually, you'll start to swim, and every single breath that you fight for will make you stronger." Alaric turned to face her. "And I promise that you will beat it."

Alaric and Elena embraced sadly.

Reality

Day - Salvatore Boarding House - Living Room

Jeremy walked in. "Alex? Liv?"

Liv and Alex turned to face him. "Jeremy?"

"I--I tried to be here sooner," Jeremy told them. "I wanted to be here for the wedding."

Alaric walked closer, embracing Jeremy. "I'm glad you weren't."

Alaric pulled away.

Liv walked closer, embracing Jeremy. Jeremy returned to embrace comfortingly. Liv pulled away.

Alex and Jeremy embraced, pulling away.

Alex took Jeremy and Liv's hands, leading them toward Elena.

Liv took one of Elena's hands so they could say their goodbyes together.

Elena's Mind Space

Day - Mystic Falls High School - Stoner Pit

Elena was sitting alone on the ledge.

Jeremy, Liv and Alex appeared sitting next to her.

Elena looked at Jeremy in surprised happiness. "You made it!"

Jeremy, Elena, Liv and Alex embraced.

Jeremy laughed sadly. "Yeah. Three canceled flights. I could have walked here faster."

They pulled away.

Elena started to cry. "Oh, and I was doing so well." She sighed. "I'm sorry. I wanted to at least pretend to be strong for you."

"Aw, Elena," Liv told her, embracing Elena.

Elena smiled sadly, holding Liv's arms.

"Hey," Jeremy told her. "When you do wake up, I want you to know that I spent my life doing exactly what I felt I was born to do. I was happy."

Elena nodded sadly. She looked at Liv. "Promise me something, Liv." She grabbed a journal from the concrete behind her, handing it to Liv. "Do what Alex and I do. Write it all down. Everything that you accomplish in your life. Every time to get to save someone. Every time you get to stop the bad guy. Every good thing. Every bad thing. Every time you fantasize about wanting to kill Damon." Jeremy, Elena, Liv and Alex laughed hysterically. Elena, Liv and Alex's laughter quickly turned into tears. "Write it down, so that one day when I wake up, I can read all about my little sister's life and feel like I was there."

Liv nodded quickly, sadly, small nods. "Promise."

Jeremy looked at his sisters, embracing them, holding them comfortingly.

On the Border Outside of Mystic Falls

Elena was standing in the field on the border of Mystic Falls, where Lindsey and Tory had spent the summer trying to break the anti-magic spell.

Lindsey and Tory walked closer.

Elena turned to face them, sighing, smiling sadly. "Tory." She embraced Tory. "I heard about what happened. You've got to believe that it wasn't your fault."

Tory returned the embrace. "I'll tell you anything that you need to hear right now, even if I don't believe it."

Elena pulled away, chuckling. "That's my girl." She embraced Lindsey, pulling away, putting a hand on either of their arms comfortingly. "Lindsey, I really wish you stay okay. I know about Lily's Heretics, and I know that they're gonna come after you, and that there is nowhere that you can run where they won't find you. And I know that you think that you're not strong enough to defeat them, but trust me, you are. I know that you can't fight them alone, but with Bonnie, Luke, Ryan, Kacie, and anyone who wants to help..." She sniffled. "I know you guys are scared. I get it. But if anyone's strong enough to get through this..." They chuckled sadly, looking down. "You just have to believe that you can take them down. Like you took down Silas. Like you took down the Travelers."

They chuckled sadly, nodding, looking down.

"You know, this could be the last time we're ever gonna see you," Lindsey told her.

Elena smiled sadly. "I somehow doubt that." She embraced Tory and Lindsey. "Be safe. You hear me? And keep protecting the ones that you love like you're so good at doing..." They laughed sadly. "But most of all... protect yourselves for once."

Lindsey and Tory pulled away, nodding, walking away.

Day - Cellar

Elena was standing in an unfamiliar cellar.

Tyler was standing in front of her in a tank top and gym shorts.

Elena picked up a nearby chain, walking toward Tyler.

"So, where are we in this vision of yours?" Tyler asked.

"Not here," Elena answered. "Not in Mystic Falls." She started to wrap the chain around Tyler's wrist, as though he was preparing for a full moon. "You know what happened to Nicola, Tyler. And I know that you think that she doesn't want anything to do with anyone around here. And you're probably right. But I know that she'll want to be with you. She won't want to be alone. Take her away from here, for however long it takes to get her back to herself. And if she wants to come back, and if you want to stay away, that's your choice. You need to figure out what it is you want to do, who you want to be, and then just really fight for it. You're gonna be fine, Tyler. You're a wolf now. Embrace it. Don't fight it. Let it be that thing that makes you extraordinary."

Tyler and Elena smiled sadly.

Mystic Grill

Elena and Kaylin were standing several feet away from each other.

Kaylin looked around. "Well, I guess this is the best place I can get a goodbye at." She walked down the steps in front of her toward Elena. "We didn't share that many good memories."

Elena smiled a small, sad smile. "We shared enough."

Kaylin hesitated, shaking her head. "I'm sorry, Elena. I was a bitch to you for most of the time that we knew each other."

"Well, you had a right to be," Elena told her. "I mean, you were right. Me and Alex weren't trying to, but we were destroying Stefan and Damon's bond. We never wanted it to be like that, but that's how it happened. I guess that I wanted to thank you."

"For what?" Kaylin asked.

"For protecting me, even when you hated me," Elena answered. "For keeping me safe. For saving me. And if it wasn't for you, it was for your brothers. You didn't want them to feel the loss, so you saved all of us from it."

Kaylin smiled sadly. "I think we all know that I never really hated you."

Elena smiled a small smile. "Nicola will forgive you, Kaylin. She will forgive all of you. You just got to give her enough time and space. It might take a while, but that's why you have eternity. And who is a better vampire and live in rays of light at the same time than Kaylin Salvatore?" Kaylin smiled sadly. They embraced. "Take care of yourself, Kaylin. Take care of Sarah, Stefan, Damon and Nicola."

"You know I will," Kaylin told her.

Elena and Kaylin pulled away, smiling small smiles.

College Campus

Elena was walking along the college campus.

Nicola walked closer, joining her, looking around the student-crawling campus. "College campus? Seriously?"

"It's not Whitmore, if that's what you think," Elena told her.

"Then what is it?" Nicola asked.

"Your sister's school," Elena answered. "Duke." Nicola looked down. Elena turned to face Nicola sympathetically. "Kaylin told me what you did for Sarah, Nicola, compelling her to live a normal life. But you didn't compel her to forget about you for a reason. I know how betrayed you felt when you found out about her, from Kai and emotionless Caroline of all people. I know that you felt that you were betrayed by all of us, Stefan, Damon and Kaylin especially. And the hex, and turning off your humanity to save your sister..." Nicola sighed, looking away. "You should get some time and space away from all of this, Nicola. You do. You deserve it. Hell, you need it. Go to Duke, try to have some sort of relationship with your sister, the last thing that you have that really connects you to your father. You just found out about, Nikki. Don't throw it all away because you want to protect her. She wanted to build a relationship with you. So build a relationship with her. But, no matter how much you try to deny it, Mystic Falls is your home, and Stefan, Damon and Kaylin are your family. Tory's your distant family that you still care about. And I know that they're not your most favorite people right now, and that it's going to be a long time before you can completely forgive them for what they did... but you're Nicola Salvatore." Nicola smiled sadly, chuckling. Elena laughed sadly. "Your compassion for them and for Sarah is what makes you who you are. And you know as well as I do that you have unfinished business with Stefan, Kaylin and Damon, and that you can't just turn you back on them after everything that happened between you guys. It might take a while for you to forgive them, and live in rays of light again, but that's why you have an eternity to figure this out."

Nicola nodded, starting to cry. "Thanks, Elena."

Elena embraced Nicola. "Get better, Nicola."

Nicola embraced Elena. "I'll see you again."

Elena's Mind Space

Day - Steven's Quarry

Elena and Stefan were standing in front of the water fall.

Elena took Stefan's hands. "Thank you for bumping into me that day in the hallway. I thought I would never be happy again, and then--and then I met you. You changed everything for me. You--you quite literally saved my life. I love you so much, which is why I can't wait to find out what new life you--you've chosen for yourself in sixty or seventy years when I see you again."

Stefan smiled sadly. "I guarantee it won't be high school."

They laughed sadly.

"Just be happy," Elena told him. "I know that Alex makes you happy, and that you make her happy. And I know that you'll need each other to get through this. So, just... be together." Stefan nodded. "I'll see you soon."

"I'll see you, Elena," Stefan told her.

Elena let go of Stefan's hand, walking away, leaving.

Stefan watched her go.

Warehouse District

Enzo stepped out of his car, walking toward Lily.

Lily was desperately searching for her friends, looking both relieved and embarrassed. "Lorenzo. You came back. You must think me such a monster."

"We're all monsters in some way, I suppose," Enzo told her.

"My life before my friends was misery, even as a mother, a--a wife," Lily told him. "I never felt whole. But then, I found these people, and, uh, I felt a part of something. Can you understand that just a little?"

"I can," Enzo answered. "Because I've been searching for that my whole life. And you know where I found it? With your family. Your daughter."

Lily looked away. "They've made it clear they don't want anything to do with me anymore."

"You don't truly believe that," Enzo told her. "Nothing's ever really over for people like us. Nothing's ever set in stone. We're all works in progress, and we all have progress left to be made. For all sides of our lives."

Lily didn't answer.

Enzo looked away, looking surprised to see something in the horizon.

"What is it?" Lily asked.

"That building, it wasn't there last night," Enzo answered, opening the door, leading the way inside.

Lily followed.

Warehouse

Enzo and Lily walked in.

"Kai must have had this cloaked," Enzo told her. "When he died..."

Enzo chuckled.

Lily saw something, gasping in shock. "It can't be." A woman in early 20th century clothing walked toward them, seeing Lily, walking faster. Others started to follow. Lily was thrilled. "Lorenzo... it's my family."

Lily walked toward the woman, embracing her tightly.

Enzo looked as if he knew this was going to end badly.

Jeremy and Eliza were walking toward toward Jeremy's Car.

"I'm so sorry, Eliza," Jeremy told her.

Eliza nodded. "It's okay."

"No, it's not," Jeremy told her.

Eliza slowly shook her head. "No, it's not. But it has to be. I will make it okay." She looked at Jeremy sadly. "I'm a vampire now, Jeremy. And you're still a vampire Hunter. This--this can't..." She couldn't finish, looking down. "So, your anchor to keep you from killing vampires unwillingly is now a vampire. How ironic is that?"

Jeremy took Eliza's hand. "I can control it now."

"But you shouldn't have to," Eliza told him. "Not around me, at least. This isn't goodbye, Jeremy. Not forever, at least. It's just..."

"It just means that this will be even harder than before, harder than a normal long-distance relationship," Jeremy finished.

Eliza nodded. "Yeah. And it shouldn't be hard, Jer. I just--I don't think this could work."

"We could try," Jeremy told her.

Eliza hesitated, nodding. "Yeah." She looked at Jeremy with tears in her eyes. "Are you mad I became a vampire? One of them?"

"No," Jeremy answered. "Of course not. It's not like you asked to become one. Anyway, how could I be mad at you when everyone I know has been one of has been close to becoming one at one point or another? When two of my sisters are still vampires?"

Eliza chuckled sadly, looking down. "Yeah. I guess that doesn't make a lot of sense."

Jeremy looked at Eliza for a moment, leaning closer to kiss her on the cheek, using a thumb to wipe a tear away. "You're gonna be okay."

Eliza took a deep breath, nodding. "Yeah. I am. And so are you." She hesitated, kissing Jeremy, pulling away only slightly. "Goodbye, Jer."

Eliza hesitated for a moment, walking away toward the house, leaving.

Jeremy watched her go.

Garden

Tyler walked outside into the garden.

Nicola followed him. "Ty, wait." Tyler turned to face her. Nicola shook her head. "Why did you do it?" Tyler looked at her in confusion. "You triggered your curse last night. Why did you do it?"

Tyler looked confused that she didn't already know the answer. "I did it to save you. It was the last thing I ever wanted to do, but I did it to save you from Kai. Just like you made your first human kill, the last thing you ever wanted to do, to save me from the curse. And I would do it again in a heartbeat."

Nicola shook her head slightly. "Why?"

Tyler looked at Nicola for a moment, stepping closer, pulling her into a kiss, pulling away. "Because I love you." Nicola couldn't help a small smile. "Why did you kill for me?"

Nicola smiled slightly, looking away. "I guess it doesn't do any good to try to hide it. You already know the answer." She looked at Tyler. "I love you."

Tyler smiled a small smile. "Exactly. Death, break up because of your guilt? Whatever. You can't get rid of me that easily." Nicola smiled, looking down. "I told you that you gave me a second chance. I promised you I wouldn't waste it. I didn't waste it. Now it's your turn to keep that promise."

Nicola looked at Tyler in confusion. "What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about getting you out of here for a little while," Tyler answered. "You need to get some time and space away from this place after everything that happened. I need to figure out what it is I want to do, who I want to be. And so do you. We were talking about getting out of here, even just for a little while, right after you got the hex. Even if we were just kidding around, we still can. You can get to know your sister over in her side of life, the safe life that you compelled her to live. You can finally know Sarah." Nicola started to get happier, more excited with each word he said. "Or if you want to give her a clean break, we can go anywhere else you want. I mean, I get it if you need some time to think about it--"

Nicola silenced Tyler with a long, sweet, slow kiss, surprising him, wrapping her arms lightly around his neck. Once he realized what happened, he returned the kiss. After a long moment, they pulled away, breathing deeply.

Nicola left her arms resting around his neck, pulling away, eyes still closed. "I don't need time to think about it, Ty." She opened her eyes, raising her gaze to meet his. "I'll go anywhere with you."

Tyler looked at Nicola for a moment, nodding slowly, reassuringly, starting to smile, pulling Nicola into a more passionate kiss. Nicola responded just as passionately. They were excited yet sad to leave, knowing that they both had to.

(Song:) What If Love (Live Demo) - Rhodes

Stefan, Damon and Kaylin took Elena's coffin to the Salvatore crypt.

"You think she'll be safe here?" Damon asked.

"If word gets out that her body has the Cure inside, every vampire who wants to be human will come busting through that door," Stefan told them.

"Bonnie, Lindsey and Tory will spell it shut," Kaylin told them. "We're under strict orders not to open it for anyone." She looked at Damon. "I guess that means that..."

"That it's time for me to say goodbye," Damon finished.

Stefan patted Damon on his shoulder, nodding to him sadly, reassuringly, walking out, leaving.

Kaylin put a hand on Damon's, smiling sadly, walking out, leaving.

Elena's Mind Space

Night - Street

Elena and Damon were in their wedding attire.

"You could have just told me what to do," Damon told her.

"I knew what you were going to do," Elena told him.

"You knew that the evil, selfish Damon Salvatore would give up the love of his life to save her best friend?" Damon asked.

"I knew that the love of my life would stand by his best friend, even if it meant having to live without me for a little while," Elena told him, kissing Damon softly, pulling away.

Damon looked devastated. "Things are gonna be awfully dull around here without you."

"No, they're not, Damon, because you're not gonna sit around waiting for me," Elena told him.

Damon smiled weakly. "I was thinking of doing the starvation diet, because desiccation makes the time go faster."

Elena gave Damon a look. "Damon, this isn't gonna work out if you just shut down. I need you to live your life, enjoy yourself. I want you to be happy. Now, how about that dance?"

Alex stood at Miranda and Grayson's graves.

Stefan walked toward Alex.

"I should get back to Jeremy and Liv," Alex told him. "That might have been the last time Jer has ever seen our sister at least halfway alive, and I know that both of them need me right now."

Alex started to walk away.

Stefan caught her arm to stop her. "Alex, wait." Alex turned to face him. Stefan exhaled deeply. "Just give me a chance to say what I have to, please."

Alex hesitantly nodded.

Alex was trying not to cry, both moved by Stefan's words, and her devastation.

"You have a ray of light I haven't seen in anyone else before," Stefan told her. "You're smart, you're kind, you're selfless... even will all the impatience, the guilt, the pain, the anger. The sarcasm." Alex smiled a small smile at the attempt to make her feel better. Stefan smiled sadly, placing a hand on her cheek, using a thumb to wipe the tears away, meeting her gaze. "And I understand if you need time to heal, and to prepare yourself to live your life without your older sister there in it. I understand if I have to wait for you. And I will. I'll wait, because you were ready to wait for me, and you did wait for me. And when you're ready for me, I will be ready for you."

Flash Forward - 7.03 "Age of Innocence"

Night - Mystic Falls Town Square

Matt was driving a Deputy's Car down the road, wearing his uniform.

The town square was in ruins.

The Mystic Grill looked as though it was boarded up as fire raged in trash cans on the sidewalk.

Matt looked defeated as he continued to drive past the clock tower.

There was a figure standing on the clock tower's ledge.

The shot pulled upward to show that it was Lindsey standing on the ledge.

Lindsey looked unhappily over the town, looking as if she had had enough.
