chapter 15 - Let Her Go
Outfits in the external link
From 1.01 "Pilot", night in the woods, over the fog-covered forest floor.
Caroline: (voice over) "Previously on Worlds Colliding (The Vampire Diaries)"
From 6.12 "Prayer for the Dying", in Alaric's Loft, Kai was tied to the table.
Kaylin leaned forward against the table, looking at Kai. "What exactly did you do to Nicola?"
From 6.11 "Woke Up With A Monster", in the cafeteria, Nicola was sitting on the floor, tied up with vervain ropes.
Kai was sitting in front of her, putting a hand on the side of her head, using magic to cause her enough pain for her to let her guard down again so he could show her her memories, making her scream.
Kai: (voice over from 6.12 Prayer for the Dying) "I branded all of the bad memories into her mind with a spell, burned them into her subconscious."
From 6.13 "The Day I Tried to Live", in Tyler's dorm room, Nicola tried to step past the barrier. She held her head in pain, seeing a flash of memories that had been branded by Kai, attacking her mind at a rate so fast it would make your head spin, only it caused her physical pain this time.
Kai: (voice over from 6.12 Prayer for the Dying) "The longer that she has that branding hex on her, the worse the visions will get. Soon, that's all she will be able to think about."
Nicola breathed heavily, reeling, slowly backing into the wall behind her, slowly sliding down to the floor, wrapping her arms around her knees, closing her eyes, lying her head against her knees, looking as if she was at the breaking point.
Kai: (voice over from 6.12 Prayer for the Dying) "It'll eat away at her sanity until it drives her mad, or she turns her emotions off, or both."
Tyler and Nicola stood at the door on either side of the boundary.
"So, it's not just when you're alone or when you're dreaming, is it?" Tyler asked. Nicola slowly turned to face him, shaking her head. "Can you see them right now?"
The first touch of the boundary made the memories and the branding spell worse, making Nicola pull back, turning away in anger and frustration.
Kai: (voice over from 6.12 Prayer for the Dying) "What's worse than a crazy, emotionless, set-to-kill vampire?"
From 6.14 "Stay", in the Grill, Tyler and Nicola were sitting at their table.
"You're hanging on by a thread," Tyler told her. "Let me help you."
Nicola nodded.
From 6.14 "Stay", in the Grill, Nicola sat at the bar.
Sarah stood nearby.
Nicola looked at Sarah in surprise. "You're Sarah Nelson?"
"What's your name?" Sarah asked.
"Nicola," Nicola answered.
Sarah sat down next to Nicola, showing the pictures to her. She laughed nervously.
Nicola laughed, sighing.
Enzo: (voice over from 6.14 Stay) "Let's just say that I'm opening a door that none of you thought of opening."
From 6.14 "Stay", in the Grill, Kaylin and Enzo were talking.
"Letting there be no more secrets, between your family and everyone else who deserves to be a part of it," Enzo told her. "But there might be a few unorthodox ways of doing so."
"What the hell does that mean?" Kaylin asked.
Enzo smirked. "It's a surprise, love. And it just might mend the bridge that has appeared between you and your surrogate sister before it's too late. You might not lose her after all."
From 6.12 "Prayer for the Dying", in the park, Lucas and Kai were performing the merge ceremony.
Joshua: (voice over from 6.12 Prayer for the Dying) "Lucas is gone."
Jo was holding Lucas' body.
Joshua: (voice over from 6.12 Prayer for the Dying) "He merged with Kai, and Kai won."
Kaylin turned to face Kai.
"I always win," Kai told them.
From 6.14 "Stay", in the Grill, Tyler and Nicola sat at their table.
"I talked to Tory and Lindsey," Tyler told her. "They told me that Kai's MIA, and that he's sick, and that while he's sick, he can't do anything to help you. But the merge with Lucas made him start to feel all of these feelings, and now he's feeling guilty."
From 6.13 "The Day I Tried to Live", in the boarding house, the group were talking.
"If Bonnie needs magic to get out, we just need to tell her where to find some," Ryan told them.
From 6.13 "The Day I Tried to Live", in the prison world's boarding house, Bonnie read the note that Lindsey had left for her.
The island - Tombstone - Power
Tory and I'll help get you out :)
There was still a heart drawn next to the note.
"Nova Scotia?" Bonnie asked. She smiled. "Lindsey, you're a genius."
From 6.14 "Stay", in flashback, Liz and Young Caroline were helping Young Eliza learn how to ride a bike.
Liz: (voice over from 6.14 Stay) "Caroline and Eliza were meant to be extraordinary."
From 6.14 "Stay", in Liz's room, Liz was laying in bed, looking at Damon, crying. "And they need to know how proud I am of them."
"You tell them yourself," Damon told her.
From 6.14 "Stay", in the hospital room, Elena, Damon, Stefan, Kaylin, Matt, Tyler, Tory, Lindsey and Luke had joined them, standing next to Alex, Elena, Kacie, Cristian and Liv. Behind everyone, Nicola stood there, holding the doorway lightly, looking only at Eliza, Liz and Caroline.
The line on the EKG diminished.
"Mom..." Eliza trailed off. The flat line beeped. "Mom..."
Caroline sobbed, crying, looking at the others. "She's gone."
Cristian hesitantly turned the machine off.
The beeping stopped, signaling that Sheriff Elizabeth Forbes was no longer with them.

Flashback
Day - Bill Forbes' Cabin
Young Eliza had fallen off her bike, sitting on the ground, leaning against a tree.
Young Caroline knelt next to her, looking at her bleeding knee. "It's just a scrape."
"Easy for you to say," Young Eliza told her.
Liz walked toward them. "Okay. I've got band-aids, surgical gear, and a medevan enroute for an airlift."
"You're making fun of me," Young Eliza told her.
"No, sweetheart," Liz told her, kneeling in front of her. "I'm making fun of me. There is no greater first than watching your kid ride without training wheels." She applied first aid to the scrap on Young Eliza's knee. "Oh, boy. And no worst first than seeing them bite the dust. Isn't that right, Caroline?" Young Caroline nodded. "All right. There."
"Mommy?" Young Eliza asked.
"Yes?" Liz asked.
"Am I gonna die?" Young Eliza asked.
"I would say your chances of survival are 100%," Liz told her.
"Are you gonna die?" Young Caroline asked.
Young Eliza and Young Caroline looked at Liz.
"Well, everyone dies eventually, sweethearts, but not for a long, long time," Liz told them.
"But what if you die, and we're still here?" Young Caroline asked.
"Well, then you'll both be all grown up, and you won't need me," Liz answered.
"I think we'll always need you," Young Eliza told her.
Young Eliza, Young Caroline and Liz wrapped their arms around each other.

Day One
Night - Salvatore Boarding House - Living Room
Eliza was sitting in the dark living room of the Salvatore Boarding House, looking at everyone that was there.
Matt, Tyler, Luke, Cristian and Ryan were sleeping on the floor.
Kacie and Tory were sleeping on one of the couches, sitting up.
Alex, Liv and Elena were sleeping on the couch opposite of them, sitting up.
Lindsey, Stefan and Kaylin were sleeping in nearby chairs.
Caroline was standing in the middle of them, looking at Eliza in the chair she was sitting in at the edge of the room. "Couldn't sleep much, either?"
"Couldn't sleep at all," Eliza answered.
"Have you called Jeremy?" Caroline asked.
Eliza nodded. "And he wants to come back, but he can't afford to... yet."
"And you know that if he comes back, he'll never leave," Caroline told her. Eliza didn't answer, looking away. "Eliza, you need to sleep."
"I can't," Eliza told her in a whisper.
Caroline sighed, slowly nodding, walking out of the room.

Kitchen
Damon was trying to write Liz's eulogy, ripping a sheet of paper from the notebook, crumpling it.
Caroline walked in. "Sorry. Just, um, water."
"Help yourself," Damon told her.
Caroline walked toward the sink. "So, what are you not writing?"
"You believe your mother entrusted me to eulogize her?" Damon asked.
"That's... nice, I guess," Caroline told him, turning on the tap, filling her glass.
"I think she's trying to teach me a lesson about my own mom," Damon told her. "Was supposed to do the eulogy at her funeral, and I just--"
"We don't have to share," Caroline told him.
"Right," Damon told her.
"I just mean, today is pretty much gonna be the worst day of my life," Caroline told him. "I'm not sure that I need to start it off by bonding with you. No offense."
"None taken," Damon told her.
"Great," Caroline told him. "Thanks for the water."
Caroline walked toward the door.
(Song:) Let It Go - James Bay
"Hey, Blondie," Damon told her. Caroline stopped. "Today isn't the worst day of your life. Today and tomorrow, it's a cakewalk. And there will be people day in and day out like they're afraid to leave you alone. The worst day? That's next week, when there's nothing but quiet. Just a heads-up."
"Appreciate the tip," Caroline told him, walking out of the room.
"Sure," Damon told her. "Anytime."

Day Two
Morning - Salvatore Boarding House - Library
Caroline was writing a to-do list.
Caroline: (voice over) "You've all asked what you can do to help."
------
Library
Everyone was gathered.
Caroline spoke to them. "There are five day's worth of projects on here. We are going to do them in one. We can break the rules, and cut through the red tape. I expect my mom to be properly celebrated and buried by the end of the day."
"Sure, Care," Ryan told her. "Whatever you need."
Tyler and Kacie nodded.
"Alex, Kacie, Elena, you're coming with me and Eliza," Caroline told them.
"Where are we going?" Elena asked.
"Casket shopping," Caroline answered. "Let's move."

Prison World
Day - Salvatore Boarding House - Living Room
Bonnie was filming on the camera. "It's Day 278 inside this stupid prison world. I have two broken toes, nine blisters, and an ear infection, but I don't care." She picked up Silas' headstone infused with Ovisona, Rosalita and Qetsiyah's blood. "I have phesmatosed the crap out of this magic Canadian rock." She held the bone necklace pendant which hung around her neck. "Tory and Lindsey magically got my bone necklace back over to me, and I have my magic again." She put the headstone down, pouring herself a glass of bourbon. "And when the eclipse hits 12:28, I'm going home. You hear that, me? Home."
Bonnie took a drink.

Real World
Jo's Apartment - Living Room
Jo was vomiting into the toilet.
Alaric was standing outside of the bathroom. "Uh, you sure you don't want me to hold your hair back or something?"
"Stay away from me," Jo told him. "This is gross. We haven't been dating long enough for you to see gross."
"I have guilt," Alaric told her. "The vegan dish I made fun of did you in."
"I'm dying," Jo told him. "Stupid Thai food. Never again."
Jo vomited.
"You know, maybe should just skip the funeral," Alaric told her.
"We're going," Jo told him, standing.
The doorbell rang.
Alaric walked toward the front door, opening it, revealing Kai to be standing outside.
Kai looked rugged and sick, like Tyler and Nicola had been talking about in 6.14 Stay. "Hey." Alaric tried to close the door. "Wait, wait, wait, wait." Alaric opened the door. "Look, I know you hate me, but I really... really need to see my sister."
"I think she'll pass," Alaric told him, trying to close the door.
Jo approached them, making Alaric stop, looking at Kai. "What are you doing here?"
Alaric opened the door.
"I called to tell you I was sick, and you--you hung up on me," Kai told her.
"Because I have food poisoning," Jo told him. "Did the sound of me vomiting on the other end of the line not clue you in?"
"Look, there's an issue I've been worried about since the merge, because we really didn't do it right," Kai told them. "You know, the whole, 'You're not my twin,' 'Hey, that's okay, close enough' plan? It worked, which is, you know, cool. Hey, I've even a little bit nice now in case you were wondering. But, I've been waiting for the other shoe to drop. And, well, I think it's dropped, because I'm--Where's the bathroom?"
Kai started to vomit blood.
"Oh, God," Jo told them. "Ric!"
Alaric gave Kai a trashcan to vomit into. "Here."
Alaric and Jo exchanged a concerned look.
Kai regained composure, looking at Jo. "I don't think you have food poisoning. I was supposed to merge my magic with you. But I got Lucas' instead. Oh. Now I'm defective, and I think that's why you're sick. I kind of feel like I'm dying, actually. And if I die, so do you, Dad, Olivia, and the rest of our dumb coven. So could you please fix me, like, now?"

Salvatore Boarding House - Damon's Room
Damon was putting on a tie for the funeral, looking into the mirror.
------
Flashback - 1857
Day - Salvatore Estate - Giuseppe's Room
A young boy was putting on a tie.
A young, blonde girl walked toward him timidly, upset, dressed for a funeral. "What are you doing?"
"Borrowing one of Father's ties for the funeral," the boy answered.
Damon was standing in the doorway. "He will skin you alive." The boy and girl looked at him. Damon walked closer, taking off his tie. "Take mine." He knelt next to them, putting the tie on the boy. "Okay."
"Did you finish the speech?" the boy asked.
"Not quite," Damon answered.
"It's an important speech," the boy told him.
"I will finish it, Stefan," Damon told him.
"Father said we're not to cry," the girl told them.
Damon turned to the girl, fixing the bow on her silver dress. "That is because Father is incapable of human emotion. You are nine, Kaylin. You can cry if you feel like it."
Young Kaylin thought for a moment, shaking her head. "I don't think I will."
"Why's that?" Damon asked.
"Because Mother's angel told me everything would be all right," Young Kaylin answered.
"When was this?" Young Stefan asked.
"Last night in my sleep," Young Kaylin answered. "She visited me. Did she visit you?"
Damon and Young Stefan exchanged a look.
"We must have missed it," Damon told her, putting a flower into her hair. "There. Be on your way."
Damon patted Young Stefan's head.
Young Stefan took Young Kaylin by the hand, leading her out of the room.
Damon stood, looking into the mirror.
------
Now
Day - Salvatore Boarding House - Damon's Room
Damon looked into the mirror, finishing his tie.
Stefan and Kaylin approached him from behind, dressed for the funeral.
"Well, I see the eulogy is coming along swimmingly," Kaylin told him sarcastically.
"I'm percolating," Damon told them.
"Listen," Kaylin told them. "I need your advice, and I need you two to not be dicks about it, because I have no one else to ask."
"Oh, this sounds promising," Stefan told her sarcastically.
"What did I just say?" Kaylin asked. Stefan gestured for Kaylin to continue. "All right, look. Obviously, with what happened to Jeremy and Eliza yesterday, everyone knows that Enzo's up to something."
"Uh-huh," Damon answered.
"Now, he gave me a cryptic as hell warning about opening a door that we never thought about opening that could come with a couple of 'unorthodox ways', but it could also save our relationship with Nikki," Kaylin told them.
"What the hell does that mean?" Stefan asked.
Kaylin shook her head. "I have no clue. But he said that he didn't want revenge against you, but another guy who tried to kill him recently, but Tripp's already dead, so... And this whole war between you two, and the truth about what happened 20 years ago finally coming out, and the branding spell on Nikki... It's driving this family apart, and I have no idea on what to do or how to stop it."
"I'll stop if he's willing to stop," Stefan told her. "I'm not risking another life in this again. Not after Tripp and Ivy. But Enzo's not exactly the right type of guy for you, Kaylin. I mean, if you were in love with him, you wouldn't have to ask. What happens the next time he does this, and it's even worse than the last? You've been in love once in your life, Kay, and that was with a psychopath way worse than Enzo."
"That is so not making me feel better right now," Kaylin told him.
"Setting that fact aside, does this feel like that?" Damon asked. Kaylin didn't answer. "Despite what you wanted us to believe, Kaylin, we knew how you felt about Klaus. Not all love is true love, sister. I don't know what you want, and I don't know what he wants, but let's just say that it's not exactly the healthiest relationship out there. If I were you, I'd get out while I still can." He turned to face them. "And Nikki? We knew that this was going to happen one day. We knew that something was going to happen, or Nikki would find something out that she couldn't handle, and we knew it would lead up to this. We just never knew that it would be this bad, because we never counted on a psycho putting a hex on her. Now we just wait until Kai decides to get better and make himself useful for a change."
"What if she turns her humanity off before then?" Kaylin asked. "We can't risk losing her like that, guys. Because even if she turns it off, the hex will still be there, always on her mind, and it'll drive her crazy, and it'll drive her to kill people. And then she'll never turn it back on until 500 hundred years goes by and the humanity switch fades away until she starts to feel again, just like what happened to Cristian's humanity switch when Liv died. She'll be worse than us. She'll be worse than all of us. And we can't see her without taking the risk on making it worse."
"Nikki has managed to fight through everything that this family has thrown at her," Damon told them. "Even when we doubted her the most, Nikki always pulled through."
"But this is different," Kaylin told them. "It's in her head, and there's no way to escape it until when and if Kai takes the spell away. What happens if he doesn't? How long do you think she'll last then?"
None of them had an answer.
Damon hesitated. "I need to get back to writing the eulogy for the funeral."
Damon walked out of the room, leaving.
Kaylin sighed worriedly, hesitating, turning toward the door.
"Wait, Kaylin," Stefan told her. Kaylin turned to face him. "I know that I apologized to you about being a dick to you and to Nikki within the months that Damon, Kacie and Bonnie were in the prison world, and for nearly getting Enzo killed. But I never apologized to you about forcing you into keeping a secret from everybody, including them. It's just..."
"Important," Kaylin finished. "Yeah, I got that, Stefan. And today is not the day for grudges and secrets. I'll go back to hating you tomorrow."
Stefan smiled a small smile, knowing she wasn't being serious.
Kaylin smiled sadly, turning around, walking out of the room.
Stefan sighed, as worried as Damon and Kaylin were.

Archer and Son's Funeral Home - Outside
Caroline and Eliza were talking to a woman.
"Your mother was such a vibrant woman," the woman told them. "Even after your father ran off with that man."
Alex, Kacie and Elena rushed in.
"Thank you, Ms. McGruder," Elena told her. "I'm sure we'll see you at the funeral."
Alex, Kacie and Elena quickly led Caroline and Eliza away.
"Well, welcome to the world of awkward sympathies," Alex told them. "That's why you have to be prepared with your responses. I recommend at least three."
Eliza looked at Alex, Kacie and Elena. "I don't know how any of you survived this."
"Your responses will be different for each category of people in your life," Kacie told them. "Friends of circumstance, casual acquaintance, loved ones."
"How do you know which one is which?" Caroline asked.
"Well, Ms. McGruder back there is a casual acquaintance," Alex told them. "Friends of circumstance? That'd be Damon-like people. Loved ones? Take your pick of the supernatural clique."
"Well, that's not confusing," Caroline told them sarcastically. She paused, looking ahead numbly. "We're behind schedule. Let's go."
Caroline walked ahead of them, leaving.
Eliza hesitated, following her.
Alex, Kacie and Elena exchanged a look.
"Does Caroline seem a little different to you?" Elena asked.
"Her mother just died, and Eliza's," Kacie told them. "Of course they're different."
"Yeah, I know, but that's not what I mean," Elena told them.
Alex hesitated, nodding. "Yeah. I could feel it, too. I just don't know what it means."
Alex, Kacie and Elena followed Caroline and Eliza.

Jo's Apartment - Living Room
Jo was giving Kai a check up. "Any joint pain?"
"Mm-hmm," Kai answered.
"Headaches?" Jo asked.
"Yup," Kai answered.
"Are you pregnant?" Jo asked.
Kai gave Jo a sarcastic look. "Stop making jokes. I feel like I'm being scrunched from inside out." He looked at Alaric leaning against the doorway across the room. "This is kinda private. Does your baby boo need to be here?"
"I'm not leaving her alone with you, so deal with it," Alaric told him.
"Okay," Jo told them, looking at Kai. "Your vitals are fine, your temperature is normal. I'll wait on pathology, but there is nothing medically wrong with you."
"Yeah, duh, because I'm magically diseased," Kai told her. "You haven't puked in at least--"
Jo realized Kai was about to vomit blood. "Oh!"
Jo grabbed a trashcan for Kai.
Kai vomited blood into the trashcan, grabbing Jo's arm, absorbing some of her magic.
Alaric walked toward them. "Hey! Hey!"
Alaric pulled Kai off of Jo.
Kai seemed relaxed. "Oh. I feel better."
"Yeah, because you juice boxed my magic," Jo told him.
"Yeah, sorry about that," Kai told her. "That was an accident, but I--Wow. I legitimately feel better. You need to give me your magic."
"What?" Jo asked.
"This faux merge is clearly failing because I was supposed to get your magic, right?" Kai asked, standing, walking toward Jo. Alaric stood between them. "Just--I don't know--put it in a teddy bear or a bed pan and give me."
Kai held his hand toward Jo.
Alaric grabbed Kai's hand tightly. "Listen, I could just as easily break seven little bones with one good squeeze, okay?"
"I can see you're skeptical, Ric," Kai told him. "Can I call you Ric? Hey, buddy, but here's the thing you need to know, is that Jo only survives if I do, okay? And if that's not enough for you, I'm the one that put that hex on Nicola that everyone is trying so hard to get me to take off of her before it pushes her off the edge for good. If I die, that spell stays on her forever, and you're looking at an emotionless, blood-thirsty vampire that's never coming down from the high life because the spell still won't go away. And--and--the power that binds the prison worlds comes from the leader of the Gemini Coven. If I die, the worlds collapse, all right?" Alaric looked at him in confusion. "I see vacancy. Would you like me to start over with single syllables?"
"I get the part about Nicola, but did you say prison worlds, as in, more than one?" Alaric asked.
Kai smirked. "Has no one ever mentioned that?"

Bonnie stood in the circle of light, video recording herself. "This is it. I'm ready. There's no one to stop me. Bonnie climbed out of the hole to find the world covered in snow, revealing that she was no longer in the 1992 prison world.

Day - Salvatore Boarding House - Kitchen
Damon was sitting at the table, trying to write the eulogy.
Alex walked into the room, dressed for the funeral. "Have you seen Elena and Liv?"
"They're outside with Cristian, Luke, Ryan and the other girls," Damon told her.
"I'm worried about Caroline and Eliza," Alex told him. "I don't think they're handling this as well as they think they are." She saw Damon still writing the eulogy. "You're not done yet?"
"No, I'm not done," Damon answered. "And I will never be done. I am not a nice person, and should not have to stand in front of the whole town and pretend to be a nice person. This is Liz having a last laugh from the great beyond."
"Hey, easy," Alex told him. "You are nice... ish."
"Not helping," Damon told her.
"This isn't about you, Damon," Alex told him. "This isn't even about Liz. It's about Caroline and Eliza and what they need to hear. Okay?"
Damon looked at Alex curiously. "Are you being so nice to me? I thought you still hated me from when Elena and I hurt you."
"I think you and I both know that I never hated you," Alex told him. "Like you said, I was hurt, and angry, but I never hated you. No matter how much of a dick you can be, I don't think I can ever hate you. Not after everything."
Damon smiled a small smile, slightly touched. "Thanks, Alex."
"Don't be late to the funeral or I'll kill you," Alex told him, walking out of the room.
"And the moment's gone," Damon told her.
Damon sighed, looking at the empty paper.

Flashback - 1857
Day - Old Mystic Falls Cemetery
Damon was holding a bottle of bourbon, approaching Young Stefan and Young Kaylin.
Young Stefan and Young Kaylin looked at their mother's grave, noticing Damon.
"You missed your speech," Young Stefan told him.
"I know," Damon told them.
"Why?" Young Stefan asked.
"I did not know what to say," Damon answered hesitantly.
Young Kaylin looked up, tears in her eyes, starting to cry. "You could have just said goodbye."
Young Kaylin continued to cry.
Young Stefan wrapped his arms around Young Kaylin comfortingly, looking at Damon disapprovingly.
Damon watched them in guilt, pained by their pain.

Jo's Apartment - Hallway
Alaric and Jo were speaking alone.
"I really don't have a choice," Jo told him.
"Of course you have a choice," Alaric told her. "It's your magic to give or not give."
"What do you think I should do?" Jo asked.
"Look, my life is full of martyrs who cave to the bad guy, trying to be heroes, mainly Cristian, Tory, Lindsey, Luke and Ryan, and it never ends well," Alaric told her. "Somebody inevitably gets hurt or dead, and that somebody could just as easily be you, or Bonnie, or Nicola regardless, no matter what you do. So, if you wanna fight and keep your magic, I will fight with you. And if not, well... I loved you when you weren't a witch, and I'm pretty sure I will still love you regardless."
Jo looked at Alaric in slight surprise, touched. "Pretty sure?"
"Yeah, at least 92%," Alaric answered teasingly, kissing Jo's forehead.
Alaric and Jo embraced.

Eliza was inside, looking at Liz's body in her military uniform, lying in her coffin. She looked up, brushing back her hair, taking a deep breath, trying to be strong.
Caroline walked toward her. "Eliza... they're ready." Eliza looked at Liz's body, adjusting her badge, starting to cry. "Do you need a minute?"
Eliza looked at Caroline, shaking her head. "No, I'm okay." She looked at Liz. "We're gonna be all right, Mom. I promise." She looked at Caroline, taking several deep breaths. "I'm ready."
Caroline nodded, numb.

Bonnie was video recording herself. "Okay. Clearly, I've been dropped into a snowy tundra hell dimension. Either that, or I finally had a psychotic break."
A green light shone over the world.
Bonnie looked up to see the Aurora Borealis. She slowly made her way to a house in the distance, walking inside.

Inside
Bonnie looked around the dark, deserted home. "Incendia."
Several candles instantly lit themselves magically.

Day - Mystic Falls Church - Outside
(Song:) Bullet (Vampire Redux) - Ryan Star
Tyler and Nicola walked toward the church.
Like the magic from the prison worlds, the spell on Nicola seemed to be taking its toll due to Kai's increasingly growing sickness. She was suddenly lightheaded, holding her head.
Tyler turned to Nicola. "Are you okay?"
Nicola exhaled, nodding, lowering her hand to her side. "Yeah. I'm fine. I just got lightheaded for a sec."
"Since when did vampires get lightheaded?" Tyler asked.
"It's probably because of the branding spell," Nicola told him. "That, and being sick, Kai's magic is out of order, and this hex came from his magic, so the worse that he gets, the worse that I get, and once he gets better and takes the spell away, then everything will go back to the way it was."
"Then why do I get the feeling that not everything will go back to the way it was?" Tyler asked.
"Probably because I won't magically forgive Stefan, Kaylin and Damon for the secret they've been keeping from me for 20 years," Nicola answered. "And they have pretty much defined the last three years of my life. So, yeah, my life is definitely changing one way or the other, but at least I won't be in a living hell."
"You sure you want to do this?" Tyler asked. "They all know that you've been going through a lot lately. You know that they won't blame you for wanting to leave."
"Today isn't about me, Tyler," Nicola told him. "It's not about Stefan, Kaylin or Damon. It's about Caroline and Eliza. I'm here for them. And for Sheriff. Just because I'm going through hell doesn't mean that they deserve to be forgotten."
Nicola sighed, leading the way inside.
Tyler hesitated, following her.

Nicola and Tyler took their seats in the second row next to Matt, Tory, Luke, Ryan, Lindsey, Liv and Cristian.
Stefan, Kaylin, Kacie, Caroline, Eliza, Alex, Elena and Damon were in the front row.
There were military men here in honor of Mom.
The priest began the funeral in front of the coffin. "We are here today to pay our tribute and our respect to a pillar of our community, our sister, our protector. Sheriff Elizabeth Forbes. We are also here today to show our love and support for Liz's family and friends."
The military stood, walking to the other side of the coffin.
Two laid an American Flag over the coffin.
The leader pretended to speak into his radio on his shoulder. "Calling Sheriff Forbes. This is the last call for Sheriff Forbes." Matt leaned forward, watching them in interest. "No response. Radio number 2-6 is out of service after 12 years and four months of police service. Gone, but never forgotten." The leader phased toward the others. "Ten-hut."
The others phased, walking away to their seats.
Damon walked onto the stage to deliver his speech. Nicola looked down, avoiding looking at him, exhaling deeply. Tyler took her hand in his.
Damon noticed, looking at Nicola sadly, looking around the pews of people. "Liz Forbes was my friend. In her last moments, she asked me to pass along a message to her daughters, but I cut her off before she could say too much, told her she could tell Caroline and Eliza herself, but she didn't get that chance." He looked at Caroline and Eliza. "Your mom wanted both of you to know how proud of you she was, and she should be. You're both beautiful, strong women, generous friends, and two bright ray of lights in a sea of dark. She said both of you were extraordinary, and you are, and so was she." Eliza started to cry silently, looking down. Caroline took Eliza's hand in her own. "Liz was a hero to this town, she was hero to all of you, and she was a hero to me." Damon looked at the coffin. "Goodbye, Sheriff. You will be missed."
Damon stepped down, walking toward Elena, taking his seat.
Caroline and Eliza looked at each other, nodding, standing, walking to the front, turning to face the others.
(Song Ends)
Caroline sounded numb. "Thank you all for coming. This is for our mom." She closed her eyes, taking a deep breath, starting to sing in that same numb, emotionless voice. "Go in peace / Go in kindness / Go in love / Go in faith / Leave the day / The day behind us."
Eliza took a deep breath, starting to sing. "The day is done / Go in grace." She showed her pain in the words she sang, her voice loud, dramatic and beautiful. "Let us go into the dark / Not afraid / Not alone."
Eliza's voice lowered to normal volume, but it still showed her pain and grief and emotion. Caroline sang with her in that same numb, emotionless voice as they finished the song together. "Let us hope by some good pleasure / Safely to / Arrive at home."

Night - Mystic Grill
(Song:) Details - Sleeperstar
After the funeral, everyone was here at the Grill for the wake.
Matt, Tyler, Kacie and Tory were sitting at a table together, looking toward Nicola as she walked through the crowd alone.
"Nicola's strong, I'll give her that," Tory told them. "If I was her, I probably would've flipped the switch a long time ago." She looked at Tyler. "Thing is, Ty, I get it, all right? We've all been through so much that it's bound to make us a little crazy."
"It's okay," Kacie told them. "We'll find a way to make sure that Nicola stays okay."
"I was thinking, you know, watching the way all those cops honored her today, I wanted to be a part of something like that," Matt told them. "So I talked to one of the Deputies, and he gave me an application. There's this, uh, officer training program. Seems pretty cool. you know, like something I'm supposed to be a part of." He held another application toward Tyler. "I got one for you, too."
Tyler seemed confused yet tempted.
Kacie and Tory exchanged a look, smiling small, sad smiles.

At the front of the Grill, Caroline was getting ready to leave.
Eliza walked toward her. "Caroline, are you leaving?"
"Yeah," Caroline answered. "I think I've done the whole funeral thing enough for one day."
"I'll walk you home," Eliza told her. "I have to go home, anyway."
"No, Eliza, you need to call Jeremy, okay?" Caroline asked. "It's two blocks. You can come home when you talk to Jeremy. I'll be fine, Eliza."
"I just don't think it's a good idea for you to be alone tonight, you know?" Eliza asked.
"I think that's exactly what I need, actually," Caroline told her, wrapping her arms around her. "Thank you for everything you did for me, Eliza. Thank you for being an amazing sister. I'll never forget it."
"You're welcome," Eliza told her. "But, Care--"
"I'll be fine, Eliza," Caroline told her. "Okay? I just had to get through today."
Caroline walked out of the Grill, leaving.
Eliza watched her go, looking as if something had dawned onto her.

Stefan, Kaylin and Damon were sitting together.
"Nice speech," Kaylin told him.
"Thanks," Damon told them.
"What broke through the writer's block?" Stefan asked.
"I just needed to be reminded that the goodbye wasn't about me," Damon answered. "I failed both you by not doing the eulogy at our mother's funeral." Stefan and Kaylin looked at him in slight surprise. "And I failed Nikki repeatedly by being the reason, or at the very least letting all of these things happen to Nikki. I didn't want to fail anyone today."

Jo had just finished giving Kai her magic, explaining why Nicola was no longer in pain and why the prison worlds were no longer shifting between each other. "It's done."
Kai looked much better. "Ah. Thank you. And congratulations." Jo looked at him in confusion. Kai whispered into her ear. Jo's expression slowly filled with shock. "Have a good life, sissy."
Kai walked out of the apartment, leaving.
Alaric looked at Jo. "What'd he say?"
"The reason I was sick, it wasn't food poisoning," Jo told him.
"What was it?" Alaric asked.
"He said that I'm pregnant," Jo answered. "I don't know what to say. I don't--Hmm. I don't know what to do with that."
Alaric processed quickly. "Marry me."

"What?" Jo asked. "No, no. That's a pity proposal. You can't throw a proposal at a pregnant ex-witch. I don't even know if I want kids, let alone get married." Alaric took a ring box out of his pocket. "Oh, my God. What are you doing?"
"I bought this the day after your brother died," Alaric told her. "Caroline and Eliza's mother was sick, and you were in danger. And I just thought, 'Life's too short'. And I've been trying to plan for the right moment, which was supposed to be this moment with breakfast in bed, you know, until you started puking up last night's dinner."
"Ric..." Jo trailed off.
"We can talk about choices and all that," Alaric told her. "We can. But I would really love to have this baby with you. That's, uh, something I never thought I'd have. So this isn't a pity proposal, Jo. I love you." He knelt to the floor, opening the box to reveal a diamond ring. "Marry me."
Jo sat down in front of him. "I can't believe this. Are you sure?"
Alaric smiled. "At least 92%."
"Yes," Jo told him. "Yes. Yes."
Alaric and Jo smiled, embracing.

Stefan and Damon processed.
"Nikki's not gonna last that much longer," Damon told them. "Not unless Kai undoes the spell."

"They felt Bonnie starting the spell, and they finished it to bring her back," Liv answered. "Where do you think they are?"
"You okay?" Cristian asked.
Liv shook her head. "Cristian, yesterday, when we were standing right here, we were in such a good mood even though everything looked like it was falling apart. Now, Jeremy's gone, and Caroline and Eliza's mom is dead, and everything is done, and it's the exact opposite. Everyone is sad and grieving. Even us." She sighed, turning to face Cristian. "God. How can everything change so much just less than 24 hours, Cris?"
Cristian shook his head. "I have no idea, Liv."
"It seems to happen a lot for us," Liv told him. "What are we? Cursed or something?"
"I don't think it's us that's cursed," Cristian told her. "I think it's this town."

Living Room
Caroline was lighting a few candles. She looked up, knowing she was behind her without looking at her. "I said I was fine, Eliza."
"I don't believe you," Eliza told her. Caroline turned to face her. "All day, something has been bugging me. You wanted to pack this all in so quickly, like you had somewhere you needed to be. I mean, you were so concerned with getting through today without a hint of how you'd feel tomorrow. And then I realized. You don't want to feel tomorrow. That's the plan, right? You're not going to feel tomorrow, because you're going to turn it all off."
"I thought I could get through the rough patch and just pick myself up after like I usually do," Caroline told her, walking past her. "But then Damon made me realize it's just going to get worse."
Eliza turned to face her in confusion. "You listened to Damon?"
"I can't do worse, Eliza, okay?" Caroline asked. "I didn't even think there was a worse. It's better this way."
"Better?" Eliza repeated. "Care, you're talking about flipping the humanity switch. There's nothing better about that."
"That is everyone else around here's experiences, okay?" Caroline asked. "I have more control over my vampire side than Nicola, Stefan, Damon, Alex, Liv or Elena ever did. I don't know about Luke, Kacie, Cristian or Kaylin. They've always seemed to have better control. My experience will be different."
"It's not gonna be different, Care," Eliza told her. "It's gonna be deadly. You saw what happened to them when they did it."
"Yeah, that's my point, Eliza," Caroline told her. "They did it. Alex and Elena couldn't handle the pain when Jeremy and Liv died, so they turned it off, though that was because of Rosalita's mind control, and she also used mind control to make the hybrid make Kacie turn it off. Speaking of Rosalita, when she got Ryan killed, and Ryan died, making him lose his brother in Ryan, and Rosalita had Luke under her mind control and made him nearly hurt Tory repeatedly and made Luke bury her alive to get their powers back, Luke nearly turned it off. Even though Luke didn't. Damon died, and Elena erased all of her memories. The hybrid compelled Alex to do exactly everything that he told her to when Stefan had his emotions off, and Alex lost trust from everyone, so her humanity was turned off at a dimmer switch, so we thought that she was gone and stopped trying to save her. Damon couldn't handle the pain of life without Katherine for 145 years, and he spent most of it either with his emotions turned off, or pretending to have it turned off. When he died, Stefan moved to Savannah and became an auto mechanic. When Stefan turned into a vampire, he turned it off and became a Ripper. Cristian couldn't handle it when Liv died, so he turned it off, though that was also because of Rosalita. When Damon died and Stefan abandoned her and Kaylin left to go bring Damon, Kacie and Bonnie back, Nicola closed everything and everyone off, and she's trying so hard not to turn it off now. Not to mention how you and Lindsey react to death. When Ryan died and Lindsey and Luke lost Ryan, Lindsey went into total shut down and lost herself to Expression. Kacie and Bonnie died on top of everything that you already lost, and you shut everyone out, just like Lindsey did when she lost Ryan. Even though you and Lindsey are not vampires, you both came as close to being emotionless as you possibly could. It was like you and Lindsey turned it off, even though there was no possible way that you could turn it off. You and Lindsey were just pretending not to feel the pain. What? Do you think that you guys are the only ones who get to escape grief?"
"You just mentioned the biggest mistake that I ever made," Eliza told her.
"Was it a mistake?" Caroline asked. "Because when you came out the other end, the worst part of the pain was gone, and that's what I need. I just need the pain to be gone. While everyone went on a murder spree when they turned their emotions off, you know who the only two who had control over themselves? Kacie and Kaylin. Kacie was still sired, and I don't think she killed anyone when she had her emotions turned off. Yes, Kaylin loved torture more than she already did, but she had control over who she wanted or didn't want to kill. She didn't kill because she didn't have control. She killed because she didn't care. That is who I will be, not some person who can't a handle over herself. I will be like Kacie and Kaylin."
"What about me?" Eliza asked. "Do I matter to you, Caroline?" She started to cry. "Mom is dead, Care. Jeremy is gone. It--it hurts so bad, I can't breathe. I get it. I do. I can't--I can't do worse. I can't, okay? I shouldn't have to. No one should have to. It's not fair, but if you turn off your humanity, it means that you technically died, too. My sister will be gone, Caroline. I lost too much to lose you, too. I can't--I can't lose you, too, Care."
Caroline started to cry at her pain. "You would do the same thing I'm doing if you had a choice, Eliza. You would have done it the day that Damon, Kacie and Bonnie died. Don't expect me to believe that you won't fall back into the spiral that you did when they died, now that Mom died."
"I'm trying so hard not to," Eliza told her. "I promised Jeremy that I wouldn't. I promised Mom that I wouldn't, and so did you. I know you think that you have it all figured out, but please listen to me. I'm not gonna let you do this."
Caroline stopped crying, trying to get a handle over her emotions, her voice emotionless. "That's not your choice to make."
Eliza watched her.
Caroline was trying to find a way to turn it all off.
Eliza walked toward her instantly, holding her arms. "Caroline, don't, please." Caroline closed her eyes in concentration. Eliza looked at her desperately, knowing that she couldn't stop her, crying. "Stop, Care. Caroline! Please don't leave me alone."
Caroline opened her eyes, completely void of emotion, smirking slightly. "I already did."
Eliza let go of her arms slowly, no longer crying, backing away, looking at her painfully.
