chapter 10 - Christmas Through Your Eyes

Outfits in the external link

From 1.01 "Pilot", night in the woods, over the fog-covered forest floor.

Bonnie: (voice over) "Previously on Worlds Colliding (The Vampire Diaries)"

From 6.05 "The World Has Turned and Left Me Here", in the prison world's underground tunnels, Kacie rushed toward them, forcing the Ascendant into Damon's hands, pushing him into the light.

Damon looked at Bonnie and Kacie.

Eliza: (voice over from 6.06 The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get) "What about Bonnie and Kacie?"

Damon was brought up into the light. With a bright flash, he was gone.

Damon: (voice over from 6.06 The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get) "They sacrificed themselves for me."

From 6.07 "Do You Remember the First Time?", in the prison world's underground tunnels, Kacie, Bonnie and Kai stood in the circle of light created by the eclipse.

Bonnie put the Ascendant in Kacie's hands.

Kai used magic to pull Bonnie down next to him.

The light pulled Kacie toward the eclipse.

Kacie: (voice over from 6.07 Do You Remember the First Time) "She sacrificed herself to save me."

From 6.09 "I Alone", in the prison world, outside the Gilbert House, Bonnie started to cry, breaking down on the porch in despair and loneliness, sobbing.

Lindsey: (voice over from 6.09 I Alone) "She's all alone."

From 6.09 "I Alone", in the cemetery, Damon, Elena, Alex, Kacie and Lindsey were talking.

Lindsey had tears in her eyes. "And it's all my fault."

Kacie turned to Lindsey. "Hey, no, it's not."

Kacie wrapped her arms around Lindsey.

Lindsey started to cry silently, wrapping her arms around Kacie.

From 6.09 "I Alone", in the prison world, outside the Gilbert House, Damon and Elena were talking.

"I'm sorry I compelled away the memories," Elena told him. "They were only half mine."

Damon placed a hand on her cheek, smiling. "We'll make new ones."

Elena looked unsure, but not unhappy.

From 6.08 "Fade Into You", in the dorm building, Stefan and Alex were talking.

"I knew that you were the one person who would sit with me and let me cry, and I didn't want to cry anymore, so I had to push you away... the most," Stefan told her.

Alex smiled slightly in shock. "Thank you for saying that."

They looked at each other for a moment, smiling small smiles.

From 6.09 "I Alone", in the road, Monique, Stefan and Kaylin were talking.

"I met Sarah at sleep-away camp," Monique told them. "Sarah had a great life."

Kaylin looked at Stefan. "Why did you let us believe that she died?"

"I wanted to protect her," Stefan answered. "I didn't want it getting back to Damon."

"Nikki has a sister that I had thought to be dead for the last 20 years," Kaylin told him. "That's the only reason I never told her. Because I knew that it would destroy her."

Stefan sighed in defeat. "Okay. Tell her, but only her. No one else. Promise me, Kaylin."

Kaylin exhaled, lowering her arms to her side. "I promise."

Later, Enzo and Matt were with them.

Enzo grabbed Monique, pulling her back against him.

"Enzo, let her go," Kaylin told him.

"I just want the truth, love," Enzo told her, snapping Monique's neck, letting her body fall to the ground.

Matt started toward him "No!"

From 6.09 "I Alone", on campus, Jeremy and Tyler were jogging through the campus.

Matt was standing in front of them, making them stop. He looked at Tyler. "I think channeling your rage might be a better option." He looked at Jeremy. "And how do you feel about being a Hunter again?"

"Why?" Jeremy asked.

"Because I want both of you to help me kill Enzo," Matt answered.

Jeremy and Tyler exchanged a confused look.

From 6.08 "Fade Into You", in the road, Damon compelled Alaric. "Get the Ascendant from Jo."

From 6.09 "I Alone", in Alaric's office, Jo and Alaric were talking.

"Damon's a vampire," Jo told him.

"Are you saying Damon compelled me?" Alaric asked. "He wouldn't do that. He's my friend."

From 6.09 "I Alone", in the cemetery, Alaric walked toward Damon. "Jo drove me across the border."

"Look, Ric," Damon told him.

"What was off the table was compelling me to steal from my girlfriend when we had promised her we'd keep her brother locked away," Alaric told him.

From 6.08 "Fade Into You", in the dorm building, everyone but Olivia was sitting at the table.

"In our coven's tradition, the twins merge their strength," Jo explained. "The stronger one wins, absorbing their twin's power, and the weaker of the two..."

"The weaker of the two what?" Liv asked.

"The weaker one dies," Lucas answered

From 6.09 "I Alone", in the cemetery, Damon, Elena, Alex, Kacie and Lindsey were talking.

Lindsey was breathing heavily. "Kai is here."

Damon picked up a large tree branch, swinging it, hitting Kai, making him visible again and fall over the anti-magic border.

Kai stood, looking around. "Huh. I guess this is that, uh, anti-magic border, which means now there's a psycho loose in Mystic Falls and no vampires around to stop him."

From 6.09 "I Alone", in the road, Stefan and Kaylin were talking.

"The promise I made to you about keeping Sarah a secret?" Kaylin asked. "It doesn't abide to Nikki. I will tell her, and I will be the first one to tell her before anyone else tells her, because if anyone else tells her about what happened, you and I both know that even she will give up on us. For good."

From 6.09 "I Alone", in Olivia's dorm room, Olivia started to breathe heavily, backing away. Kai broke an empty bottle against the wall, holding the jagged edge against her throat.

"What the hell do you want?" Olivia asked.

"Feel like making a deal with the devil?" Kai asked, letting her go.

Olivia looked at him in confused suspicion.

Kai smirked sadistically.

Day One

Night - Whitmore Medical Center - Hallway

(Song:) Blue Christmas - Dustin Kensrue

Jo was in the busy hospital hallway, on the phone. "How much are you gonna want to kill me if I need to rain check tonight?"

Alaric was on the other line, sitting in his place. "What happened?"

"I have a possible 480 hit-and-run n campus, one DOA, four reds en route," Jo told him.

"Have your previous boyfriends understood this language you speak?" Alaric asked.

"I'm gonna miss dinner," Jo told him. "So you're my boyfriend now?" Alaric didn't answer. "There's no hospital code for awkward silence." They laughed. "Give me two hours. Save me dinner."

Jo hung up, getting back to work.

Emergency Room

Jo walked in.

A woman looked at her. "Doctor, we have a young female with abdominal wounds."

"Put her in T3," Jo told her. "I need 10 milligrams of morphine. Mine's conscious."

Another doctor stood with her. "See a lot of blood, no broken bones. Making an sense to you?"

"No, it's not," Jo answered. She looked at the injured woman in front of them. "What happened to you? Were you hit by a car?"

"I can't breathe," the victim told them meekly.

The other doctor by the next bed collapsed.

"It's okay," Jo told her. "You can tell me what really happened. Sweetheart? Look at me." The girl was looking behind Jo to see Kai sitting up from another bed, covered in blood but apparently unharmed. The girl's pulse skyrocketed. She was hyperventilating. "What happened to you?"

Kai walked up behind Jo, restraining her. "I stabbed her."

Kai injected Jo with a sedative, making her fall unconscious in his arms.

The female victim screamed.

Flashback 1 - 2007

Day - Town Square

(Song:) 25 Days of Christmastime - Caroline Brooks

The town was gathered for Christmas festivities. It was snowing, and the citizens were dressed against the cold.

Kacie was putting marshmallows in a hot chocolate. She had long hair.

A snow ball was thrown into her back.

Kacie turned to see Alex.

"Sorry," Alex told her, clearly not sorry at all. "Had to."

"You know you just declared war, right?" Kacie asked.

"Come on," Alex told her. "Caroline, Bonnie, Elena and Eliza are over there."

"Alex, I don't wanna go see Caroline and Eliza," Kacie complained. "They're perky, preppy and annoying."

Alex took Kacie by her arm, leading her toward the other girls. "And the only way you're gonna stop thinking like that is if you actually hang out with them. Please, Kacie, for me. Or at least for the Christmas holidays."

Kacie relented, smirking. "Okay."

"Yay," Alex told her.

They walked off together, laughing, looking at the other girls. Bonnie had long hair. Elena's was straightened.

Bonnie smiled when she saw Alex and Kacie. "You're here. Now the fun can begin."

Now

Prison World - Mystic Falls High School - Parking Lot

Bonnie drug a tree toward the high school. "Come on." The eclipse started. Bonnie looked up at it. "Heh. Nope. I'm not noticing you. Today's not May 10, 1992. Today's the tree decorating ceremony, and you are not telling me otherwise."

------

Real World

Day Two

Morning - Whitmore College - Dorm Building

Caroline and Eliza walked toward their dorm room, Caroline's phone on speaker.

"Eliza and I just figured that we were skipping Christmas this year, you know, considering the part where I die if I cross the border into my hometown," Caroline told the person on the phone.

Liz's voice was on the other line. "What happened to Christmas being both of your favorite time of the year?"

"Was my favorite time of year when Care could actually live in our own house and help decorate the town tree and drink hot cocoa with our friends," Eliza told her.

Caroline and Eliza walked toward the dorm room.

------

The Girls' Dorm Room

Caroline and Eliza walked in to find Liz and Alex inside, surrounded by boxes of Christmas decorations.

"What are you doing?" Caroline asked.

Eliza looked at Liz. "You're supposed to be at the Mystic Falls tree decorating ceremony."

"I'm playing hooky this year," Liz told them.

"You even brought our favorite ornaments," Caroline told her. "Mom!" She looked at Alex. "So what's your role in all of this?"

"Well, she wanted help, and I couldn't say no," Alex answered. "Plus, I just wanted to surprise you."

They all smiled.

"Well, I guess you're not the only one with surprises up your sleeve," Eliza told her.

Alex looked at her in confusion. "What are you talking about?"

Stefan walked in with two boxes of Christmas lights. "Hey. I, uh, didn't know which ones to get, so I got both."

"What are you doing here?" Alex asked.

"Eliza needed Christmas lights," Stefan told her.

Alex turned to face Eliza with a look. "Eliza..."

"We have a huge dorm, and I thought we could use an extra set of hands," Eliza told her. "Give me a break, Alex."

Alex gave Eliza a look.

Eliza returned the look with her own, turning away to set up.

Alex turned to Stefan, trying to keep from smiling. "The little ones, obviously."

Eliza smiled.

Cristian's Home - Study

(Song:) This Good Night Is Still Everywhere - Dustin Kensrue

Cristian and Liv sat at the desk, which was covered with old books.

Cristian laid his head on one of the open books.

Liv looked at Cristian, smiling.

Cristian opened one eye. "Are you watching me sleep?"

"No," Liv answered. "I'm watching you drool all over Ric's textbooks. I mean, Cristian, I know that he has been lending them to us all summer, but he said that if we damaged them in any shape, way or form, we would be on the very wrong side of Alaric Saltzman."

"I don't drool," Cristian told her, sitting up, looking at the book. He wiped his chin. "Hmm." Liv smiled, laughing quietly. "Oh, what time is it?"

"Time for Ric to get a new reference library," Liv answered. "We've been looking all night. I swear, I haven't found anything that even remotely resembles an Ascendant."

"Well, we haven't looked hard enough, Liv," Cristian told her. "Let's get to it." He looked at his book. Liv looked at him. "Find anything yet?"

"Nope," Liv answered.

"Still staring," Cristian told her. Liv smiled, looking at the text book in front of her. "This is Bonnie we're talking about. The sacrificial martyr. Well, one of them at least. Lindsey and Tory are the other sacrificial martyrs. Bonnie doesn't deserve this, and she would do it for us, and Lindsey doesn't deserve to lose her like this."

Liv sighed. "Yeah..." Her phone rang. She answered. "Hey, Cris, it's Ric."

"Have you seen Jo?" Alaric asked.

"No," Liv answered. "Not since yesterday."

Alaric sighed.

Cristian looked curious. "Why?"

(Song Ends)

------

Whitmore College - Alaric's Office

Elena, Damon, Kacie, Liv, Cristian, Alaric, Kaylin and Nicola were gathered.

"So I asked around the hospital," Elena told them. "No one's seen Jo since last night at the ER."

"It was Kai," Kacie told them. "Jo knew he'd come after her, and he did."

Kaylin looked at Alaric. "Not to give you boyfriend lessons or anything, Ric, but if you knew Jo's whackjob brother was out on the loose and after her, don't you think keeping an eye on her would have been a smart move?"

"And what would you have had me do, Kaylin?" Alaric asked. "Ask you or Damon to compel Jo to stay put?"

Kaylin nodded.

"Guys, if Kai has Jo, we need a plan," Liv told them.

"Plan's easy," Nicola told them. "Find Kai, kill Kai. Mm-hmm."

Damon looked at Nicola, shaking his head. "Uh, yeah, no, Nikki. You're not going near him."

"Why not?" Nicola asked. "Kai tried to kill me and Olivia."

"Yeah, and he almost killed Lindsey, Kacie, Alex, Elena and me," Damon told her. "You're not going near him."

Kaylin and Nicola looked at Damon in confused suspicion, knowing he was keeping something from them.

Cristian shrugged. "Fine. I'll kill Kai, no matter what it takes."

Kacie smirked. "Of course you would, Cristian Hunter, the vampire hero."

Cristian shrugged. "Why do you care, Kacie?"

"Don't," Kacie answered. "Just wanted to thank you for that."

------

Olivia's Dorm Room

Olivia and Lucas were talking.

"Bottom line, we need to keep Kai alive," Olivia told him.

"You think I'm gonna protect the guy who chased us around the house with a baseball bat when we were two?" Lucas asked. "Olivia, you're on some serious crack."

"Right now, we are stuck doing the twin merge for our coven, okay?" Olivia asked. "That means one of us lives, one of us dies. But if we help Kai, and he finds a way to merge with Jo, it's not our problem anymore."

"Until Kai becomes the most powerful witch in our coven and goes on a killing spree," Lucas told her. "Something tells me that's gonna become our problem."

"Lucas, just hear me out," Olivia told him.

Lucas exhaled. "What does he want us to do, exactly?"

------

Warehouse

Matt was on the phone.

Kacie's voice was on the other line. "Just think sociopathic Ryan Reynolds."

"Haven't seen him," Matt told her.

Kacie was standing outside of Alaric's office. "Grunge vibe, annoying as hell."

"Still no idea," Matt told her.

"Well, if he has half a brain, he will be hiding where vampires can't find him," Kacie told him. "We asked Tory and Lindsey to do a locator spell, but he has a cloaking spell. So, in between levels of Mario Kart, can you, my brother and Little Gilbert maybe keep an eye out? Please?"

"Yeah, got it," Matt told her. "If we see him, we'll let you know."

"Hey," Kacie told him. "Are you okay? You sound distracted."

"Just thinking about how Enzo killed Sarah," Matt answered. "Or Monique, or whatever the hell her name was."

"I'm sorry," Kacie told him.

"It'll be fine," Matt told her. "I'll see you later, okay?"

"Okay," Kacie answered. "But be careful. Kai's dangerous, Matt, and I don't want you to get hurt. If you see him, don't even think about taking him on. Just call me."

"Don't worry about me," Matt told her. "Just get the son of a bitch."

Matt hung up.

Jeremy and Tyler walked into the room.

"Who was that?" Tyler asked.

"It was Kacie," Matt answered. "Apparently, there's a psychopath roaming Mystic Falls."

"You tell her we're busy hunting down a psychopath roaming outside Mystic Falls?" Tyler asked.

"No," Matt answered. "Didn't want her to worry." Jeremy and Tyler exchanged a look. "Did either of you tell Eliza or Nicola?" Jeremy and Tyler didn't answer. "That's what I thought. Look. You guys better get out of here. Enzo's gonna be here soon."

"Let's kill a vampire," Jeremy told them.

Jeremy and Tyler turned to leave.

------

Whitmore College - Alaric's Office

Elena, Damon, Liv, Cristian, Alaric, Kaylin and Nicola were gathered.

"Well, the shield is on the look out," Damon told them. "Anyone else brimming with confidence?"

"Okay, so Kai has a cloaking spell up as long as he has Olivia and Lindsey's magic in his veins," Nicola told them. "Here's an idea. Witches against the power sucking freak. Tory and Lindsey, then vampire or hybrid strength like Kacie and Luke and even werewolf strength like Ryan, can take him out."

Kacie walked in. "It's too dangerous. Kai can take Tory and Lindsey's power with a single touch, and if he takes all of it, then they die. So, no, Tory and Lindsey stay out of this one. Luke and Ryan are gonna stay with them."

"Kacie's right," Kaylin agreed. "Luke and Ryan can stay with Tory and Lindsey and make sure that Kai doesn't go after them again like the bastard tried to kill Lindsey the other day."

"Yeah, but Tory and Lindsey are gonna want to help stop a psycho and be martyrs like usual, and if they find out that we're using Luke and Ryan to keep them out of the fight to protect them, they're gonna be pissed off," Nicola pointed out.

"Well, that's why we don't tell them, Nikki," Damon told her. "I'm agreeing with Kaylin and Kacie on this one. We keep them out of it. Luke and Ryan can keep Lindsey and Tory away."

"You agreeing to keep Tory, Lindsey, Luke and Ryan out of danger?" Liv asked. "Never thought that I would see that, Damon. But they're my best friends, so I completely agree, no matter how pissed off they might get once they find this out."

"Agreed," Cristian agreed.

"Little Liv, Cristian, never thought that we would agree with anything," Damon told them.

Cristian smirked. "Neither did I."

Alaric seemed distracted, as if this subject made him think of another. "This just doesn't make sense."

"What could possibly not make sense about magical twins absorbing into one another?" Liv asked.

"She said without laughing," Cristian told her.

Liv smiled.

"Listen," Alaric told them. "Jo needs her magic for the merge to work, okay? And she got rid of that back in 1992."

------

Olivia's Dorm Room

Olivia and Lucas were talking.

"Kai said Jo hid her magic in a knife somewhere," Olivia told him.

"It's probably back in Portland, where she got rid of it in 1992," Lucas told her.

"He checked," Olivia told him. "The knife's not there. He thinks someone took it."

------

Alaric's Office

Elena, Damon, Kacie, Liv, Cristian, Alaric, Kaylin and Nicola were gathered.

"Jo doesn't have magic because it's stuffed in a knife that was stolen and hidden by yours truly," Kaylin told them.

"Yeah, unless Kai does a locator spell," Elena told them.

"It's impossible," Damon told them.

"Why?" Elena asked.

"Kai was born without the ability to do magic," Kacie explained. "So the psycho just steals it from other witches, or he uses other witches to do his bidding."

------

Olivia's Dorm Room

Olivia and Lucas were talking.

"Let me guess," Lucas told her. "Kai wants us to do a locator spell on the knife."

"If we find it, Jo can get her magic back, Kai can merge with her, and you and I live," Olivia told him.

"This is ridiculous," Lucas told her. "This is our job. Merging is our duty to the coven. It's why we were born."

"No," Olivia disagreed. "We were born because our coven decided that Jo wasn't strong enough to beat Kai. Why should we have to die because our sister's too weak to defeat our psychopath of a brother?"

"You know, a month ago, the thought of bowing out never even occurred to you," Lucas told her.

"That's because Kai wasn't here a month ago, but he's here now," Olivia told him. "Lucas, we don't have to do this. We have a chance to live out normal human lives. We could actually be happy."

------

Alaric's Office

Elena, Damon, Kacie, Liv, Cristian, Alaric, Kaylin and Nicola were gathered.

"If the only way to restore Jo's magic is to reunite her with that knife, Kai's gonna come for it," Cristian told them.

"Cristian's right," Liv told them. "Even if Kai can't do the locator spell, he's gonna make it his mission to find it."

Liv started to dial a number on her phone.

"Who are you calling?" Nicola asked.

"Tory," Liv answered. "We need a cloaking spell before Kai finds it."

"Kai finds it," Kaylin told them. "Great. Love it."

"Why aren't you more concerned?" Elena asked.

"Because if Kai goes for the knife, I will kill him, because the knife is right here where I put it," Kaylin told them, taking a picture frame down from the wall, opening the back of it. "Tada!"

There was nothing there.

------

Mystic Falls Cemetery - Salvatore Mausoleum

Kai held the knife that contained Jo's magic. "I know I tried to kill you when you were toddlers, but I got to say, it sure is nice to be around family for the holidays."

Olivia and Lucas glanced uneasily at Jo.

Jo was chained up, unconscious on the ground.

Flashback 2 - 2007

Day - Mystic Falls Town Square

Caroline and Eliza, bundled up against the cold of the snow, stood next to Liz for the tree decorating ceremony.

"Dad's not here yet," Eliza told her.

"Oh, yeah," Liz told them. "You know what? He's not gonna make it. You remember his friend Steven? He needed help moving a couch or something, so he's gonna miss out."

"But it's an undeclared law that the sheriff and her husband put the star on the tree," Caroline complained.

"Then we will just have to let the Lockwoods have the honors this year," Liz told them.

"Is something going on between you two?" Eliza asked.

"It'll be fine," Liz told them. "I promise."

"Mom, we're in high school, okay?" Eliza asked. "We can handle adult conversations."

"No worrying during the holidays, okay?" Liz asked. "And that tree is not gonna decorate itself. Go."

Caroline and Eliza smiled, walking away.

Alex, Kacie, Bonnie and Elena were threading popcorn to make garlands.

Alex looked at Bonnie. "Well, maybe you'll meet a cute surfer."

"Doubtful," Bonnie told them. "My dad's conference is two hours away from any beach."

Caroline and Eliza walked closer.

"Hey, guys!" Caroline told them.

Kacie resisted the urge to groan, rolling her eyes.

Alex looked at Kacie significantly. "Be nice."

"I will be nice," Kacie told her.

Caroline and Eliza stopped on the other side of the table, looking at them.

"Cute surfer?" Eliza asked. "Where?"

"Nowhere," Elena told them. "Bonnie's dad is dragging her on a work trip, so Alex and I are gonna ask our parents if she can spend the holiday with us."

"Are you serious?" Bonnie asked.

"Yeah," Alex answered. "The six of us have never spent Christmas apart. We plan on keeping it that way, even though Jeremy and Liv will hate it."

"Oh!" Bonnie told them. "I love you guys. Almost as much as I love torturing Jeremy and Liv."

"Liv will probably whole up in her room," Eliza told them. "I mean, she has ever since Tory's family died in the fire, and Tory had to move, and Liv stopped being so close to Lindsey, Ryan and Luke." The girls nodded sadly in agreement. "But it's always fun to torture Jeremy." Caroline, Alex, Kacie, Elena and Bonnie exchanged a knowing smirk. Eliza gave them an innocent look. "What?"

"Nothing," they told her.

"Okay, so now that Christmas is saved, let's get these garlands on the tree before they end up on your hips," Caroline told them, walking away.

Eliza, Alex, Kacie, Elena and Bonnie exchanged a look, smiling, eating popcorn.

Now

Day - Whitmore College - The Girls' Dorm Room

Alex was hanging up lights.

Stefan joined Alex to help. "Here. I get it."

"Not that I don't appreciate the whole Christmas spirit amends attempt, but what are you doing here?" Alex asked.

"Well, Eliza asked for my help," Stefan told her.

"No, Stefan," Alex told him. "What are you doing here?"

"Alex, I'm trying, okay?" Stefan asked.

Alex sighed, biting her lip. "I know I shouldn't be as forgiving as I am right now considering everything that happened, but maybe it's the Christmas feeling getting to me."

"This is you as forgiving?" Stefan asked teasingly.

Alex smiled, chuckling, looking down. She looked up, pulling a piece of her hair back from her face.

Stefan was smiling.

Caroline, Eliza and Liz walked into the room, having a tray with five cups.

"Who wants hot chocolate?" Eliza asked.

Stefan and Alex looked toward them.

(Song Ends)

Suddenly, Liz looked faint, dropping the tray, bracing herself against a chair.

Caroline and Eliza stood next to her instantly. "Mom?"

Stefan and Alex walked closer in confused worry.

"Oh, wow," Liz told them. "I just got really..."

Liz collapsed.

Caroline caught her before she fell to the floor. "Mom!"

Eliza held Liz from the other side. "You okay?"

Liz nodded, but still looked out of it.

------

Mystic Falls Cemetery

Kai drug a stick in the dirt, drawing a line.

Olivia and Lucas were watching.

"What the hell is he doing?" Olivia asked.

"Probably playing tic-tac-toe with himself like a crazy person," Lucas told her.

"This is the anti-magic border," Kai told them. "Jo can get her magic back over there while over here--"

Jo's voice was heard in the distance. "Hey. What did you do to me?"

"Sissy's up," Kai told them, leading the way into the mausoleum.

Olivia and Lucas followed.

------

Salvatore Mausoleum

Kai, Olivia and Lucas walked in.

Jo rattled the chains around her wrists. "What the hell did you do to me?"

"I haven't seen you in 20 years," Kai told her. "You can't muster a hello?"

"What did you guys do?" Jo asked.

"What you should have done 20 years ago," Olivia told her.

"It's not gonna work, Kai," Jo told him. "I don't have my--"

"Magic," Kai finished. "Yeah. Yeah. I recall. You stored it in this."

Kai stabbed Jo in the arm with the knife, making her cry out in pain.

"What the hell?" Lucas asked incredulously.

"I'm trying to reunite Jo with her..." Kai trailed off, stabbing Jo in the arm again. "Magic. It's not working."

Lucas stepped forward to stop him. "Enough. Enough, man."

Kai pushed Lucas against the wall, holding the knife against his throat. "I was wanting to kill you when your brain was the size of an acorn. You don't think I'll do it now?"

Kai let Lucas go.

"Whatever," Lucas told them. "I'm not watching this."

Lucas walked out of the mausoleum.

Kai laughed. "Oh, so dramatic. All right." He turned to Jo. "Sissy... let's try this again."

"Stop," Jo told him. "I put my magic in there by choice. Taking it back is also my choice. Unless I bleed to death, which will happen in the next thirty minutes. Heh. Wouldn't it be ironic if you accidentally killed me before the merge ceremony?"

Kai considered this for a moment. "I'm going to find a bandage while you figure out how to put the magic in this knife into our sister." He handed the knife to Olivia. "Preferably by the time I get back so I don't have to dull it by slitting your throat."

------

Whitmore College - Medical Center - Hallway

Caroline, Eliza and Alex were sitting together in the hall outside of Liz's room, looking into the room that she was in by the window that was in front of them.

Kacie and Elena walked closer. "Hey."

"Hey," Alex told them.

"What happened?" Kacie asked.

"I don't know," Caroline told them. "She just collapsed. One second, we're decorating, and then the next, she's just on the ground. Maybe she forgot to eat. You know, sometimes, she skips breakfast."

Alex looked toward the blood bank at the end of the hall, looking away.

Elena noticed. "And when was the last time you ate, Alex, as in fed?"

"Oh, God," Alex told her. "Now you sound like Stefan. He just went to go find something to take the edge off."

"They have her sedated," Eliza told them. "She's going to be asleep for a while. Can you guys just come and distract us, like Alex's doing?" Elena sat on the other side of Caroline on the bench. Kacie sat on the other side of Alex. "How's the search for the new Ascendant thingy?"

"Not good," Kacie answered. "God. Poor Bonnie. She sacrificed herself to save me, and I hate myself for it." Elena, Caroline, Eliza and Alex looked at her sympathetically. Alex took Kacie's hand comfortingly. Kacie looked at them. "Do you think she knows it's Christmas? You know she never liked being away from us on Christmas."

"I don't know," Alex told them. "It's probably better that she doesn't know, though."

Eliza looked at Elena. "So are you and Damon..."

"I know what you're thinking, and no," Elena told them.

"Actually, I was going to say that I think it's great how he's always been there for you when it mattered," Caroline told her. "You know, through thick and thin, good times and bad times." She looked at Alex. "I mean, he was even like that for you, when he was with you. And sometimes, in some ways, he still is." Alex nodded in acknowledgement. "Maybe I haven't given him enough credit."

"You're clearly malnourished," Eliza told her.

They chuckled.

Whitmore College - Dorm Building

Nicola was walking down the hall, on the phone. "Bet you think you're pretty clever, don't you?"

Olivia was on the other line, standing in the mausoleum with Jo. "Is this Nicola? Why don't I have your number saved?"

"Well, you weren't in your dorm room," Nicola told her.

"It's creepy you know where my dorm room is," Olivia told her.

"Let me guess," Nicola told her. "You and Lucas figured Kai merging with Jo saves you from doing the merge."

"It does," Olivia told her. "If they merge, and Jo wins, that means Lucas and I are off the hook, and we can live out nice, normal human lives. You were the one that said to fight back."

"I didn't mean to take the chance of a super psycho have all the power in the world to go and kill us all," Nicola told her. "Here's an idea; how about none of you merge?"

"Goodbye, Nicola," Olivia told her, hanging up.

Nicola sighed, hanging up, seeing Lucas walking toward her down the hall.

Lucas slowed to a stop when he saw Nicola.

Nicola smiled.

Lucas turned around, walking the other way.

Nicola appeared in front of Lucas, waving her fingers sarcastically. "We both knew that wasn't gonna work. Where's Jo?"

"I'm not telling you, and before you threaten to rip my head off, remember, all that does is guarantee Kai having to merge with Jo," Lucas told her.

"Is that what you people think of all four of the Salvatores?" Nicola asked. "That we just instantly resort to violence? I just have a question. I mean, look. I get why you don't want to merge with Olivia, okay? Because no one wants to see that face with her hair. I get it, but what makes you think Kai merging with Jo is any smarter? I mean, I heard he killed four of your siblings, and that was without magic." Lucas didn't answer. Nicola sighed, pretending to give up. "Eh, it'll be fine. I'm sure Kai gets all that power, he's just gonna mellow right on out."

Nicola turned around, starting to walk away.

"Stop," Lucas told her.

Nicola smirked, knowing that would have worked.

Warehouse

Enzo walked inside, joining Matt. "And here I thought we were meeting for tea and crumpets."

"I'm giving you information about a girl who's supposed to be Kaylin's distant niece, Nicola's lost long sister," Matt told him. "I'm not exactly interested in them finding out."

"And why are you helping me?" Enzo asked. "I thought you unfriended me when I killed that little con artist."

"Monique," Matt told him. "Her name was Monique."

"Eh, two names, actually," Enzo told him. "First Sarah, then Monique, probably others. I asked you why you're helping me."

"She knew something that Stefan didn't want her to know, and for some screwed up reason, you're obsessed with knowing Stefan's secrets," Matt told him. "Probably because he has everything you'll never have."

"Answer the bloody question," Enzo told him. "Why are you helping me?"

"Because I want this obsession to take you the hell away from here," Matt told him. "This is all the information Monique told me about her past. Take it and get it."

Matt handed Enzo a thick dossier.

Enzo opened it to see it full of blank pages. He laughed grimly, pushing the file into Matt's chest hard enough to push him into the wall behind him, turning around in time to catch an arrow Jeremy had just shot at him with a crossbow. "Think I didn't plan for that?"

Tyler appeared, stabbing Enzo in the neck with a vervain syringe. Enzo turned to face Tyler, pushing him into the wall next to Matt.

Jeremy shot Enzo in the back with a wooden stake.

Matt punched Enzo out, making him fall to the floor.

Whitmore College - Medical Center - Hallway

Elena, Kacie, Alex and Stefan sat out in the hall, who were observing the many doctors in the dorm room with Liz through the window.

"Caroline could really use whatever's in that cup," Alex told him. She looked at the many doctors in Liz's room. "Is it just me, or does that look really bad for somebody who just fainted?"

"That doctor just came over from radiology," Stefan told them. "I overheard her say, 'glioblastoma'."

"Gliblastoma?" Elena repeated. "No, but that..."

"What?" Kacie asked. "What does that mean? I don't speak doctor."

"It's a brain tumor," Elena answered.

"What?" Alex asked worriedly. "No. No, no."

"We brought her in a couple of weeks ago after Tripp's guys grabbed her," Stefan told them. "Doctors ran some tests, and apparently, they found something suspicious."

"No, but that doesn't make any sense, Stefan," Alex told him. "Caroline and Eliza would have said something."

"Or maybe their mom hasn't told them yet," Stefan told them.

Elena looked past them, looking down the hall in regret and sympathy. "Caroline..."

Kacie, Alex and Stefan followed her gaze.

Caroline stood there, tears of denial in her eyes. "No." She saw a doctor walking out of the room, rushing in front of her, compelling her. "What's going on with Liz Forbes?"

"Her recent MRI showed a lesion on her brainstem," the doctor told her. "We think it's metastasized to her spine."

"C--can you operate?" Caroline asked.

"If the tumor's already spread, it would be impossible," the doctor told her.

"But that would mean..." Caroline trailed off, fighting her emotions. "Does she know?"

"For a few weeks now," the doctor answered. "But news like this takes time to digest."

The doctor walked away.

Caroline looked forward in denial, starting to cry.

Alex, Kacie and Elena wrapped their arms around Caroline comfortingly, letting her cry.

Matt, Tyler and Jeremy drug Enzo across the room.

"Ugh," Tyler told them. "Wouldn't it be a billion times easier just to stake him in the heart?"

"Yeah, but he wouldn't suffer," Matt told them. "Get the door."

"Wait," Jeremy told him. "This isn't about making him suffer. It's about making sure he doesn't kill anyone else."

"He just killed an innocent girl," Matt told them. "He deserves to suffer."

"Dude, you sound like Tripp," Tyler told him.

"You mean the guy whose neck Enzo slit open for trying to protect innocent people?" Matt asked.

"I'm just saying, you're being a little intense," Tyler told him.

"Maybe that's the problem," Matt told them. "We've all been looking the other way because we're friends with vampires, but how many people need to die for us to face the fact that vampires also kill people?"

"So, what, you'd do the same thing to the Salvatores?" Jeremy asked. "What about Elena, Liv, Alex, or Cristian, or Caroline as in my girlfriend Eliza's sister, or Luke, Ryan's brother/Tory's boyfriend, or Kacie, your girlfriend/Tyler and Tory's sister?"

"Just help me get him to the van," Matt told them.

"Look," Jeremy told him. "I know how you feel. I was supernaturally programmed to take out my sisters, remember? But this whole us versus them thing is gonna drive you crazy, and it's gonna get you killed."

Mystic Falls Cemetery - Salvatore Mausoleum

Olivia put a hand over Jo's wound.

"Hey," Jo told her. "It will be okay. Just needed to get rid of Kai so you could free me."

"Look, Jo," Olivia told her. "You can't run away from this anymore. You've had 20 years of freedom. Now take your magic back and do this. You owe it to the coven."

"Is that what you think, that I've been shirking my responsibility to our family?" Jo asked.

"Lucas' all I've got," Olivia told her. "If we merge, and he dies... I may as well be dead, too."

"If Kai merges with me, he'll be more powerful than any of us," Jo told her.

"Did it ever occur to you that maybe you're strong enough to beat him?" Olivia asked. "You were 22 the last time you went up against him. Since then, you've been a combat medic, you've saved hundreds of lives, and your hospital worships you."

"Someone's done her research," Jo told her.

"You're my sister, and I'm yours," Olivia told her. "Look how far you've come without magic. You didn't get here listening to people tell you you weren't strong enough."

Olivia held the knife toward Jo.

Kai appeared, grabbing Olivia from behind, siphoning some of her magic, making her groan and gasp in pain.

"Olivia!" Jo tol her.

"Can't say I didn't warn her," Kai told her. Olivia fell to the ground. "Phesmatos superous em animi..."

Olivia grabbed her head in pain, her nose bleeding.

"Kai, stop!" Jo told him.

"Isn't it gonna be funny when I kill her using her own magic?" Kai asked. "Wait. Is that funny or sad? I get my emotions mixed up. Hey. What's the one for fire again? It's 'incendia', right? Phesmatos--"

"Kai, enough!" Jo told him. She picked up the knife, starting to take her magic back. "Lectos espiritox."

Outside

Alaric, Damon, Cristian and Kaylin walked through the cemetery.

Damon was on the phone. "Thanks for the heads-up, Nikki. How'd you even know where they were?"

Nicola was walking off of Whitmore Campus. "I did the simplest and easiest option. I went to one of the sources and asked where the others were."

"I don't give you nearly as much credit as you deserve," Damon told her. "None of us do."

"I know," Nicola told him. "I'm tired of being underestimated, Damon."

Kaylin took the phone from Damon. "Let me talk to her, Damon."

Damon gave her a what the hell look. "Kaylin--"

Kaylin ignored him, speaking to Nicola over the phone. "Look, after we finish this, I need to talk to you, okay? Face to face. I have to tell you something."

"Okay," Nicola told her. "See you then."

They hung up.

Cristian looked at his best friend. "Why are you here, again, Kaylin?"

"Because I need a distraction and a reason to avoid people," Kaylin answered. "And, plus, I wanna kill a psycho before he kills us. That enough answer for you, Cristian?"

"How selfless," Alaric told her.

Damon looked at Alaric. "That's it? We're gonna kill bad guys together, and you talk to my baby sister Kaylin and her best friend Cristian, but not me?"

"Look, you blew up your car, you needed a ride," Alaric told him. "Doesn't mean we have to talk."

"All right," Damon told him. "Look, I agree that compelling you to betray your lady friend was an irrational decision stemming from untreated control issues." Alaric stopped walking, looking at Damon, scoffing, continuing to walk. "What?" Alaric ignored him. Damon looked at Cristian and Kaylin. Cristian shrugged. Kaylin gestured to Alaric impatiently. Damon sighed, rushing in front of Alaric to stop him. "I'm sorry, Ric."

"Is that it?" Alaric asked.

"Yeah," Damon answered.

"Great," Cristian told them. "Let's finish this."

Salvatore Mausoleum

Jo finished taking her magic back.

Kai knelt in front of Jo, placing a hand on either of her cheeks, feeling the magic. "There it is. Oh, so predictable. I threaten Olivia, you do anything it takes to save Olivia."

"Fractos," Jo chanted, using magic to break off the chains on her wrists.

They could hear a whistle from outside.

------

Outside

Kai walked outside.

Kaylin rushed toward Kai, grabbing him from behind. "Cemetery, seriously?"

"Motus," Kai chanted, using magic to make Kaylin stumble back over a line drawn into the dirt. Kaylin felt the anti-magic spell trying to kill her, making her daylight necklace stop working, her skin burning in the sunlight. Kaylin tried to step back over it. Kai held his hand toward Kaylin, using magic to keep her over the edge. "Oh, whoops. You must be Damon's sister, Kaylin, right?" Kaylin's spear wound over her stomach appeared, blood gathering in her shirt. "Looks like you found the anti-magic boarder. Drew a line in the dirt for everyone's convenience. See? Yeah. You're welcome."

Damon rushed toward Kai.

Kai held a hand toward Damon, using magic to push him back into a tree, making him fall to the ground.

Cristian came up behind Kai, holding him in a chokehold, distracting him.

The spell Kai had on Kaylin lifted away, letting her fall back over the line into the safety zone.

Alaric stood in front of Cristian and Kai, aiming a gun at Kai.

Kaylin breathed heavily in relief, looking at Cristian. "Thank you, Cristian. Kill him."

"Cristian, huh?" Kai repeated.

Jo ran closer. "Cristian, don't!"

"What are you talking about?" Cristian asked.

"She's lightheaded and confused," Damon told him. "I'll give her some of my blood, okay, Cristian? Kill him."

"No, you can't, Cristian," Jo told him. "If Kai dies, Olivia and Lucas have to do the merge. It's not fair to them."

"Who cares?" Damon asked. "Cristian, kill him."

"Cristian, don't," Jo told him. "I can win. I can beat Kai. I just need a little time to get stronger."

"We're moved, truly," Kaylin told her, standing, already healing. She looked at Cristian. "Kill him now, Cris."

"I'll figure out a way to win," Jo told him. "Cristian, you have to trust me. Keep him alive."

"Cristian, don't you dare," Damon told him.

Annoyed with everyone talking at him, Cristian looked as if he was ready to snap Kai's neck. "All of you shut up."

Alaric aimed the gun at Cristian. "Let him go."

"Really?" Cristian asked in annoyance.

"Do it, Cristian," Alaric told him.

Cristian rolled his eyes, letting Kai go, hitting him on the head hard enough to make him fall to the ground, unconscious. He looked at the others in annoyance.

Whitmore College - Lucas' Dorm Room

Lucas was gathering his things.

Olivia walked into the room. "Why the hell did you tell Nicola where we were?"

"Because I realized listening to you two was a huge mistake," Lucas answered. "Kai's a monster."

"So you'll just risk our lives?" Olivia asked skeptically. "Jo thinks she can beat Kai."

"You and I both know that's crap," Lucas told her. "Kai's a million times stronger. She'll die, and the first thing Kai's gonna do is kill everyone in our coven as punishment for putting him away, and then he'll turn on innocent people because he's crazy and bored and homicidal."

"Fine," Olivia told him. "Then I'm selfish, Lucas, but I'd rather be alive and selfish than this dead martyr who served her purpose to her coven."

"People are gonna die, and it's gonna be our fault," Lucas told her. "Remember that."

Whitmore Medical Center

Caroline was sitting on a bench, crying silently.

Alex, Elena and Kacie sat next to her.

"Are you okay?" Elena asked.

"There's a 22-year-old sociopathic witch running around Mystic Falls right now," Caroline told them. "That we have a plan for. We've dealt with every kind of evil there is, and we always have a plan, but this... The last time we dealt with this kind of stuff, we almost lost Nicola. But it's different this time. Nicola had a tumor on her carotid artery. My mom has a lesion on her brain stem." She started to cry harder. "If Eliza and I lose our mother, it'll destroy both of us."

Kacie took her hand. "We know. Neither you or Eliza deserve this, Caroline. You're good people. You're happy, you're kind."

"I should tell her," Caroline told them, looking around. "I need to tell Eliza. It's only a matter of time before she finds out, and I don't want her finding out from a stranger, you know? I have to find my sister and tell her."

"Stefan's calling to tell Damon," Alex told her. "Let us help you tell Eliza."

Caroline stood, shaking her head. "No. I--I have to do it alone. I have to tell Eliza myself."

Caroline walked away.

Mystic Falls Cemetery

Alaric and Jo had chained Kai to a statue on the anti-magic side, to where Damon, Cristian and Kaylin couldn't get to him, and facing away from them so they couldn't kill him craftily.

Jo and Alaric walked to the car.

"I guess we'll just lock up your brother until you two, you know," Alaric told her.

"Merge our twin powers during the next celestial event?" Jo finished.

"Yeah," Alaric answered. "There really is no sugarcoating that, is there?"

"For the record, I've dated doctors and lawyers and a couple of artist types, but none of my previous boyfriends would have understood that," Jo told him.

They smiled at each other.

"Here," Alaric told her. "Let me, uh..."

Alaric got a blanket out of the car, wrapping it out Jo, kissing her.

"Be careful," Jo told him, walking away.

Alaric watched her go.

Kaylin looked away from them, toward Kai, throwing a rock toward the statue with vampire strength and speed, unable to hit him in the head and kill him.

"So this whole, anti-magic thing, is it like a, like a dome or a bubble?" Kai asked. "Like, say, you were in 747 flying over Mystic Falls, would you die? You know, that could be dangerous, like if you're headed to New York and your pilot reroutes for weather."

"How's this?" Cristian asked. "We kill you, and when you're in Hell, you can ask a bar full of dead Travelers, who cast the damn spell."

Kaylin threw a rock at the statue again.

"That's a lot of Travelers," Kai told them. "Must be a pretty big spell." He spoke quietly. "Like a really big spell. So big... it covers every inch of an entire town."

Kai put his hand on the ground.

Kaylin threw another rock toward Kai, just chipping off a piece of the stone of the statue.

Alaric drove his car up to the border, getting out, looking at Kaylin. "What the hell are you doing?"

"I'm working on my knuckleball," Kaylin told him, throwing another rock.

"We are keeping him alive, Kaylin," Alaric told her.

"Can I ask why we continuously compromise logic for some girls that any of you love?" Kaylin asked, looking between Damon, Cristian and Alaric. "It's like Jo is Alex, Liv or Elena or something."

"You know, I don't know how I went so long without saying this, but you're a real bitch," Cristian told her.

"Thank you, Cris," Kaylin told him, throwing another rock.

"Bonnie's stuck over there because of him," Damon told them. "She's over there, and I'm over here, and I hate myself for it."

"Yeah, and killing him will make you feel better, so let's just stop pretending for a second that this is about anyone else but you," Alaric told him. He looked at Kaylin. "And you're just trying to kill him because you're bored, and you're on extreme edge today for some reason, and you need something to channel it to."

"I'm not channeling anything, and I am trying to kill him because he is a psychopath that will kill us the next chance he gets," Kaylin told him.

"She's not wrong," Kai told them.

Kaylin looked at Alaric. "See?"

Kaylin threw another rock toward Kai.

"Kaylin, stop," Alaric told her. "Kaylin!"

Kaylin got tired of being told what to do, throwing a rock at one of the tires on Alaric's car, hard enough to puncture it and make the air explode out, making the car sink.

Alaric gave Kaylin a look.

"You should probably go change that tire," Kaylin told him. Alaric walked away. "Cristian, you should probably go help him."

Cristian gave Kaylin a look. "Kaylin..."

Kaylin smirked. Cristian sighed, turning to follow Alaric.

Kaylin went back to throwing rocks toward Kai.

Kai had his hand on the ground, beginning to draw the magic out of the anti-magic spell out of the ground.

Flashback 3 - 2009

Day - Mystic Falls Town Square

The town was gathered around the Christmas tree.

Kacie, Alex, Elena and Bonnie stood together, laughing.

Liz was giving a speech. "Now that's what I call a Christmas tree. Isn't that gorgeous? The holidays are all about being with loved ones, and I think that's what makes this tradition so special in our town. It's a reminder that no matter where you turn, you have a friend."

The crowd applauded.

Kacie, Alex, Elena and Bonnie put their heads together. "Aw."

Caroline and Eliza stood next to them.

"Biggest mistake of Junior year," Caroline told them. "Including the boys in Secret Santa. Stefan is officially the worst gift giver."

"He got you a snow globe?" Alex asked in amusement.

"Yeah," Caroline answered. "Of Mystic Falls, as if I don't see enough of this town every day as it is."

"Well, I love my bracelet," Eliza told her.

"Of course you do, because I am good at Secret Santa," Caroline told her. "And I didn't purchase it from a quick shop."

"Looks like someone is missing the true meaning of Christmas," Elena told her.

"Come on," Bonnie told them. "We're happy and healthy, and we're together."

"And I may have realized that Caroline and Eliza Forbes are not as bad as first impressions serve," Kacie told them.

Eliza smiled, giggling. "Aw, Kacie!"

Kacie smiled.

The six girls wrapped their arms around each other.

Now

Day - Whitmore College - Medical Center - Hallway

Eliza sat alone in the hall, looking at the bracelet that Caroline had gotten for her for Christmas that year.

Caroline walked toward Eliza, timid and upset. "Hey, Eliza."

"Hey," Eliza told her. "Uh, is there any news? Are they still running tests?" She looked up to see how upset she was. "What? Care, what is it?"

"Eliza..." Caroline trailed off. "We need to talk."

Eliza looked at her older sister in confusion.

Mystic Falls Cemetery

Wind started to blow around Damon, Kaylin, Cristian, Alaric and Kai heavily.

The wind was whipping Kaylin's hair through the air, away from her face.

Damon tried to talk on the phone. "Hey. Where are you? I can't hear you."

Stefan's voice was on the other line. "I'm at the medical center." Stefan was standing in the hall of the medical center. "Where are you? Reception's horrible. Damon, can you hear me?"

"Hey," Damon told him. "Stefan!"

Damon lost connection.

Cristian looked toward Kai, but he wasn't saying anything.

Kai had his hand on the ground, continuing to pull the magic from the anti-magic spell into his body.

The wind started to rise, spiking their suspicions.

Lindsey walked through a crowd standing around the Christmas tree.

When someone plugged in the lights, a few of them burst, exploding, startling the crowd.

Lindsey looked at the broken lights in confusion.

(Song:) My Bucket's Got A Hole In It - Hank Williams

Matt was driving.

The radio in Tripp's van went a little haywire.

Matt hit it, turning it up.

In the back, Enzo woke, hearing the music. "Fancy something else? I always figured I'd bow out to the Everly brothers, or--"

Matt closed the partition behind him.

Mystic Falls Cemetery

Kai continued to draw magic from the ground.

Damon, Kaylin, Cristian and Alaric only became more suspicious, unable to see what he was doing from there.

"He stopped talking," Cristian told them.

Damon stood in confusion. "He never stops talking."

The chains on Kai's wrists melted off of him.

Kai was chanting. "Magia tollox de terras. Utera aso utox."

"What happened to his chains?" Kaylin asked.

"Magia tollox de terras," Kai chanted.

"Is he chanting?" Alaric asked.

Kai continued to chant. "Utera aso utox."

Matt drove past the border into Mystic Falls.

The roof of the van was open.

Enzo began to burn in the sunlight.

On The Road

Matt got out of the van, walking around it, opening the two back doors.

Enzo was lying still, facing away from him.

Matt reached out to turn him over.

Enzo rushed to turn toward Matt, gripping his throat, unaffected by the anti-magic spell. "It's a Christmas miracle."

Mystic Falls Cemetery

Kai stood, turning to face Damon, Kaylin, Cristian and Alaric.

"You little magic sucking freak," Kaylin told him. "Sucked up all that magic from the Traveler spell."

Kai levitated Alaric off of the ground, slamming him into a tree, making him fall to the ground. "A lot of magic."

------~------

Kaylin rushed toward Kai, pushing him against the tree behind him. Kai pushed Kaylin off. Kaylin punched him in the face.

Kai disappeared.

Kaylin scoffed, lowering her fist to her side. "I really, really hate that move."

Alaric groaned in pain.

Damon walked toward Alaric, offering him his hand. "Ric! Hey. Come on. Take my damn hand, Ric. Come on."

Alaric finally accepted Damon's hand, letting him help him stand.

Cristian noticed something. "Kaylin? How are you not dead?"

Kaylin looked down at the line Kai had drawn in the dirt.

Cristian, Damon and Alaric were on the safety zone side.

Kaylin was on the anti-magic side. She looked up at them in confusion.

Nothing was happening to her.

Cristian hesitantly stepped over the line.

"Cristian, what are you doing?" Kaylin asked worriedly, worried he could get hurt.

"Testing to see if this is just a Kaylin-fluke," Cristian answered, standing next to Kaylin.

Kaylin scoffed. "Kaylin-fluke? Seriously, Cris?"

Nothing was happening to Cristian.

Cristian and Kaylin exchanged a look, chuckling in surprise.

The anti-magic spell was gone.

------

On The Road

Enzo sat on the edge of the van.

Matt sat further inside, restrained.

"If we've learned anything from today, it's that we should kill our enemies with haste," Enzo told him.

"Then what are you waiting for?" Matt asked. "Go ahead and kill me."

"I said enemies," Enzo told him. "Don't flatter yourself."

"What do you want, Enzo?" Matt asked.

"You were right," Enzo told him. "I am jealous of Stefan. He has what I want. Respect, family, girls he doesn't deserve. He throws it all away, and yet still somehow manages to come out winning. You are going to help me deplete every ounce of happiness from his life, and when there's nothing left, I'll decide if you get to live. Oh, and, uh, happy holidays."

Enzo closed the doors to back of the van, leaving Matt in darkness.

(Song:) Winter Song - Sara Bareilles & Ingrid Michaelson

Cristian was walking through the cemetery, on the phone.

Liv's voice was on the other line.  "Cristian, what do you mean, you're in Mystic Falls?"

"Just passed the border, and I am alive and well, and not coughing up a lung from dying of the influenza," Cristian told her.

Liv was walking down the road. "Let's just celebrate the fact that we can go home. I could really use some happy news right now, Cris. The past few months have sucked."

"Tell me about it, Liv," Cristian told her.

Liv smiled. "Even though Kai was the one who took away all of the magic in Mystic Falls, you were right. We got our town back. Go ahead, pull a me, tell me you told me so. Come on, Cris, I know you want to."

Cristian chuckled. "I told you so."

Liv smiled. "Yay! Now tell me that you didn't enjoy that."

"I completely enjoyed that," Cristian answered.

"Good, 'cause it's more than likely the last time that you'll ever be able to say it," Liv told him.

Cristian raised his eyebrows. "Oh, really?"

Liv smiled. "I'm coming home. I'll see you soon."

Cristian smiled. "See you soon, Liv."

Liv hung up, already walking toward the town that she had used to call home that she could finally go home to with a smile.

Caroline and Eliza were sitting together on the bench.

"That just doesn't make sense," Eliza told her. "Mom would have said something to us."

"I was worried, so... I compelled one of the doctors for information," Caroline told her.

"Okay," Eliza told her. "So our mom has a brain tumor. Then we'll just give her vampire blood."

"Eliza, do you think that if our blood cured cancer, we would have heard about that by now?" Caroline asked.

"Fine," Eliza told her. "Then when are they gonna operate? That's how they saved Nicola."

"That's the problem," Caroline told her. "They can't."

"Okay," Eliza told her. "Well, if they can't operate, then they'll give her chemo, right?"

"The tumor is growing so fast the doctors don't think that will work," Caroline told her.

"Well, then they're wrong, because they don't know her," Eliza told her. "They don't know how strong she is. Caroline, this is our mom. We know her better than anyone, and she is stronger than anyone I've ever met. I mean, she's gonna get trough this, Care." She started to cry. "Right?"

"Eliza..." Caroline trailed off, starting to cry, wrapping her arms around Eliza, holding her.

Eliza sat like that, crying in her older sister's arms, never moving.

Bonnie looked at her small tree in the prison world.

Lindsey looked at the huge tree in the real world. "We miss you, Bonnie."

"I miss you, Lindsey," Bonnie told her. "I miss all you guys."

Lindsey turned around, walking away from the large, colorful tree in the real world.

Bonnie set fire to her small, simple tree with a lit candle, turning around, walking away from it as it burned in the prison world.

Whitmore College - Medical Center - Liz's Hospital Room

Eliza sat on Liz's bedside, even though she was still sedated. She looked at the bracelet Caroline had given her on Christmas in 2009 on one wrist, and then looked at the ghost bracelet Bonnie and Lindsey had given her so she could see their spirits on the Other Side before it had went away. She cried silently, looking up.

Caroline was standing in the doorway. She saw how upset Eliza was, walking closer slowly, putting a hand on her shoulder. "It's gonna be okay, Eliza."

Eliza looked up at Caroline. "How do you know that?"

Caroline hesitated, upset, her voice soft. "I don't."

Eliza looked at Liz's sleeping form for a moment, shaking her head in denial. "No. There has to be a way to help her. We've fought against everything so far, and we have won most of them. There has to be a way to save our mom, Caroline. We just have to find it."

"And we will," Caroline told her.

Eliza looked down sadly, not knowing what to think.

Salvatore Boarding House - Living Room

Kaylin handed one alcohol glass to Damon, having the other. She looked forward thoughtfully, numb, taking a drink.

Damon started to take a drink, but stopped in annoyance, noticing her weird behavior. "All right, spill, Kaylin."

Kaylin looked at him. "Spill what?"

"You have been weird all day, and you have been extremely murderous," Damon told her. "Granted, the guy you were trying to murder is a guy who wants to become even more powerful than he already is, and admitted that he would kill us shortly afterward, but still. What the hell is going on?"

"Maybe you should ask Stefan and Enzo," Kaylin told him. "You once asked me if I knew how it felt like when your brother killed your only friend's girl, and you're stuck in the middle. Well, it's the exact opposite for me, because this time, Enzo killed Stefan's girl, and Stefan was the one who turned Enzo into vampire hunters."

"Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa," Damon told her. "Slow down, rewind, just press the damn pause button." Kaylin sighed, tilting her head, looking away. "You and Enzo? When the hell did this happen, and why the hell didn't anyone tell me?"

"Not the point, Damon," Kaylin told him. "And nothing serious to begin with."

Damon smirked. "I knew that you'd at least be attracted to him because of the whole Original hybrid thing, but damn."

"A, this has nothing to do with Klaus," Kaylin told him. "B, it's your fault that Enzo and I got together, because before you died, you were trying to set us up." Damon nodded in acknowledgement. "C, you are no help at all."

Damon smiled tauntingly. "So what do you have to tell Nikki?"

"What?" Kaylin asked.

"In the cemetery earlier, when Nikki called you, you told her that you needed to talk to her and tell her something," Damon told her. "I'm just curious about what it is."

"It's none of your business about what it is," Kaylin told him in the calmest, sweetest of tones.

They heard the rumble of an engine outside.

Damon looked up in recognition. "That's not possible."

Damon and Kaylin exchanged a look, walking toward the door.

Outside

Damon and Kaylin saw Stefan drive up in Damon's blue Camaro.

Kaylin smiled in shock. "What? This was gone. Damon blew this up."

"Yeah?" Stefan asked, getting out of the car. "Well, I didn't have either of you around to annoy me for the last four months, and didn't have Nikki around to lecture me most of the time, so I had a bit of extra time on my hands." Nicola walked toward them from the side of the house, smiling. Stefan held out the keys to Damon. Damon took them excitedly. Stefan looked at Kaylin, taking out another set of keys, holding them out to her. "And that's not the only car I fixed. Remember when you totaled your Vanguish when I had amnesia?"

Kaylin smiled excitedly, taking the car keys. "You fixed my car?"

"Consider yours as an apology/early Christmas present," Stefan told her. He looked at Damon. "And think of your as an early merry Christmas/late welcome back to life present."

"Where's my car?" Kaylin asked.

Nicola smiled. "I brought it in for you. You're welcome."

"I had Nikki put it in the garage," Stefan explained.

"I'll show it to you when you tell me what you want to tell me," Nicola told her.

Kaylin smiled, wrapping her arms around Stefan. "You're not completely forgiven, you know that, right?"

"Yeah, I know that," Stefan answered.

Kaylin pulled away, twirling the key ring around her finger, making the keys jingle.

Damon laughed, wrapping his arms around Stefan. "Thank you."

"Hey," Stefan told them. "Just, uh, do me a favor." He looked at Kaylin. "Don't punch me in the face again." He looked at Damon. "And don't die again. Those fenders were a real bitch to find."

"Deal," Damon told him. "Deal. Yeah."

Damon, Stefan, Kaylin and Nicola turned to look at the house in front of them for a long moment, letting the fact that they could live in their home once again set in.

"Well, we're home," Stefan told them.

"Yep," Nicola agreed.

Damon looked at them. "You guys sticking around?"

"Of course," Nicola answered.

"Well, that depends," Kaylin told them. "Might have to kill Jeremy and Eliza if I find out that they had sex in my bed."

Damon and Stefan walked toward the house.

Stefan opened the front door, looking back. "You coming?"

"No," Kaylin answered, giving him a significant look.

Stefan realized what she meant. "You're waiting for Nikki."

"Yeah," Kaylin answered.

Stefan nodded in understanding, nervous yet resigned, walking inside.

Damon followed Stefan inside, closing the door behind them.

(Song Ends)

Nicola turned to face Kaylin in confusion. "What do you mean, wait for me? Oh, because you were gonna tell me something, right? The same thing that Damon and Stefan were hiding from me? Probably the same thing Matt tried to call me for yesterday, right?" Kaylin sighed in defeat, reaching into her leather jacket pocket. "Please, Kay, tell me if I'm getting any of this wrong. Please tell me what's really going on." Kaylin pulled out her phone, calling someone. Nicola looked at her in confusion. "Kaylin?" Nicola's phone rang. She pulled it out to see that Kaylin's name was on the Caller ID. She looked at Kaylin in confused suspicion. "Why are you calling me when I'm right in front of you?"

Kaylin couldn't see Nicola. She couldn't hear Nicola's phone ringing, getting her voicemail. "Hey, I know you know that you can come home now." She walked past Nicola toward the house without seeing her. "Look, I told you that I wanted to tell you something, and the time to tell you is now. It's not something I should tell you over the phone by voicemail." Nicola turned to face Kaylin in confusion. "So I need you to come home so I can tell you." Kaylin sighed. "It's not something you're gonna like. And I just want to apologize ahead of time."

Kaylin hung up.

"What are you talking about?" Nicola asked. "I am here." Kaylin walked toward the door. Nicola started to follow. "Kaylin, I'm standing right behind you." Kaylin opened the door, starting to walk inside. "What do you want to tell me?" Nicola tried to follow Kaylin inside. Kaylin closed the door in her face without realizing she was there. "Hello? What the hell is happening?"

Kai appeared behind Nicola. "I may have put a cloaking spell on us." Nicola instantly turned to face him. "How genius is that? Hey, Nicola. Oh, and if you want to know what Stefan and Damon are hiding from you, if you want to know what Kaylin's trying to tell you, I can be the one to tell you instead."

Nicola looked at Kai in confused suspicion. "What do you know about me?"

"I know a lot more than you think I do," Kai told her, twisting his wrist.

Nicola's head turned to the side, her neck snapping. Her body fell to the ground.

Kai looked down on Nicola's body, smirking a sadistic, winning smirk.

WHAT HAPPENS...

From 6.11 "Woke Up With A Monster", in the Grill, Kai and Nicola were sitting across a table from each other.

Nicola was tied up with vervain ropes. "What am I doing here, Kai?"

WHEN THE TRUTH...

THINGS

BLOW

From 6.11 "Woke Up With A Monster", in the high school hallway, Kai appeared in front of Lindsey and Tory, raising his arms toward them, magically starting to take their magic away without touching them, making them groan, gasp in pain.
