chapter 6 - Wheel Inside the Wheel

Outfits in the external link

From 2.03 "Every Mother's Child", in the courtyard, Klaus, Kassandra and Elijah waked out of the compound.

Auria: (voice over) "Previously on Worlds Colliding (The Originals)"

From 2.03 "Every Mother's Child", in the back of Lenore's store, Hayley and Mikayla stood in front of Auria protectively, glaring at Lenore/Esther.

Klaus, Kassandra and Elijah walked in.

"I assume you've had the misfortune of speaking to my mother," Kassandra told them.

Later, Hayley, Mikayla and Auria were gone.

Lenore/Esther looked at Klaus, Kassandra and Elijah. "I have come to heal our family. For you, I will undo everything that has been done, thereby giving you a new life."

From 2.03 "Every Mother's Child", in the dining room of the compound, Vincent/Finn looked at his siblings, feigning offense. "Oh, you mean you don't recognize me?"

Kassandra looked at him in realization. "It's been a long time, Finn."

From 2.04 "Live and Let Die", in Rousseau's, Auria and Vincent/Finn were sitting across the table from each other.

"Auria, I'm one of the only witches that is still willing to talk to you," Vincent/Finn told her.

"I'm trying to build a peace for this city, Vincent," Auria told him.

From 2.04 "Live and Let Die", in Marcel's Loft, Elijah, Hayley, Marcel, Noah, Caitlin, Mikayla, Auria, Oliver and Aiden were talking.

"Aiden, you and Oliver escort the children," Elijah told him.

Hayley nodded in agreement. "We'll handle the rest."

From 2.04 "Live and Let Die", in the garage, Vincent/Finn used magic to throw Oliver back against a car, making him hit his head and fall to the ground, unconscious.

Lenore/Esther was standing behind Elijah, having telekinetically staked him, holding out her hand, twisting it, using magic to twist the stake until it staked Elijah in the heart.

From 2.05 "Red Door", in the crypt, Elijah was chained up, glaring at Lenore/Esther. "No more."

"Oh, I'm afraid we've just begun," Lenore/Esther told him.

From 2.05 "Red Door", in the garage, Hayley, Marcel, Noah, Mikayla and Auria were in the parking garage where Elijah and Noah had fought against the werewolves in 2.04 Live and Let Die.

Hayley was holding her phone. "Something has happened to Elijah."

From 2.05 "Red Door", in the crypt, Elijah tried to lunge toward her angrily, but still couldn't get any closer.

"Oh, stop fighting, Elijah," Lenore/Esther told him. "I want you to rejoin our family, take the body of a mortal. We can all be happy again."

Elijah looked at her furiously. "Get out of my head."

"The only way to find peace is my way," Lenore/Esther told him.

Elijah hung his head.

Flashback - 972 AD

Kingdom of Norway

Night - Village

A young, blonde girl was bundled up against the cold of the snow, talking toward a cottage.

--

Cottage

There was a dark-haired girl in the midst of performing a spell, clutching a necklace in her hand. She was surrounded by human skulls, reindeer antlers, and dozens of lit candles. "In unim edito, domino sae domina, cutlas sino liberos, sino liberos."

The young, blonde girl arrived to the cottage, closing the door behind her.

The witch was startled, unhappy.

The girl removed her mittens. "Sister, I've come to beg for your help."

"What for?" the witch asked skeptically.

"You know I've always wanted children of my own," the girl told her.

"Then go," the witch told her angrily. "Have your Viking children."

"It's been almost a full year, and I am still not with child," the girl told her. "I fear I am cursed." She looked at the witch pleadingly. The witch sighed in annoyance. "Dahlia, please. With your magic, you could help me."

Dahlia stood. "You come to me needing favors? If you hadn't abandoned your talents with witchcraft, you could help yourself."

"I was never as strong as you," the girl told her. "I know that." Dahlia turned away. "Just as I know you will not turn me away. You are my sister, and whatever our quarrels, we are bound by blood." Dahlia seemed to be considering this for a moment, turning toward her sister. "Please, help me."

"What you ask of me, it requires heavy sacrifice," Dahlia told her.

The girl stepped toward her, relieved, tears in her eyes. "I will do whatever you ask."

Dahlia noticed her sister was about to cry, sighing, wrapping her arms around her. "Ah, here." The girl returned the embrace. "I could never refuse you." They pulled away. Dahlia laced a hand on either of her sister's cheeks. "My precious little Esther."

Day One

Day - Lafayette Cemetery

Oliver had been chained and bound to stalks. He looked as if he had been severely beaten.

Vincent/Finn, Lenore/Esther and several werewolves surrounded him.

"Why don't you just kill me and get it over with?" Oliver asked.

"Speak to her again, and I'll feed you your tongue," Vincent/Finn told him. He turned to the other wolves. "Spread the word from here to the bayou. Midnight tonight, he is to be put to death for his part in the escape of deserters. For now, chain him up in the lycee." Two of the werewolves grabbed Oliver, pushing him toward the lycee. Vincent/Finn raised his voice. "Tell the other wolves to come and have a look and see what happens to traitors."

The rest of the wolves walked out of the cemetery, leaving.

Lenore/Esther looked at Vincent/Finn proudly. "Well done. Now, I believe you have a meeting?" Vincent/Finn smirked, nodding. "Good. I'll tend to your brother."

--

Crypt

Lenore/Esther returned to the crypt where Elijah was being held.

Elijah was asleep, kneeling on the floor, his wrists still chained to the ceiling above his head, leaving his arms suspended.

Lenore/Esther began to speak quietly to herself. "Still sleeping, lost in visions of horror and dreams of love." She took Elijah's face in her hands. "Still so strong, so... full of life. Too willful to take my offer." She let go of him in frustration, walking over to a nearby table, picking up a knife, turning toward him. "I remember you as a little boy. Innocent, kind... if that boy had known the creature he would one day grow up to be, he'd have leapt in my arms and begged me to save him." She affectionately ran her fingers through Elijah's hair. "I'd do anything for that little boy, as I would you." She pulled his head back by the hair, slitting his throat with the knife. Elijah awakened, gasping and choking on his own blood. Lenore/Esther muttered a spell into his ear. "Mal il de lui, ai malheeur nuit cette san."

Lenore/Esther let him go.

Elijah slumped forward, once again unconscious and still.

--

Abattoir Compound - Bathroom

Kassandra had blood covering her clothes and skin, washing up in the sink.

Hayley walked in. "Oh. So, I see your interrogation went well?"

Kassandra looked at her reflection in the mirror, glancing over the blood. "Eh, it turns out these witches are delicate creatures. No matter. I suspected my mother had Elijah captive."

"Great," Hayley told her. "Let's go find them."

Hayley turned toward the door.

Klaus appeared in front of her. "Esther is too powerful. She won't be easily found. We need to draw her out."

Kassandra stepped into her room, starting to close the sliding doors.

Hayley looked at her in confusion. "Wait. Where are you going?"

"I'm going to change, and then I'm going to find my brother," Kassandra answered, forcing herself to smile, about to close the doors.

"Kassandra, let me come with you," Hayley told her in annoyance.

Klaus sighed, stepping toward her. "I know you and Mikayla want to help, Hayley, but you can't. Our mother is wretched. She will target you in order to thwart us, and we can't very well save Elijah if we're busy saving you, can we?"

Hayley rolled her eyes.

Klaus turned to leave the room.

Kassandra closed the doors to change.

--

Marcel's Loft

Marcel, Noah and Caitlin were talking.

"I did like I said I would," Noah told them. "I kept a low profile, went all over the city. There's no sign of Elijah anywhere."

"Yeah, the humans said the same thing," Marcel told them.

"Maybe Klaus and Kassandra are having better luck," Caitlin told them.

Hayley and Mikayla walked in.

"No, they're not, which sucks, considering how low the bar is around here," Hayley told them. Caitlin looked at them in confusion. "Listen, you three up for a rescue mission?"

"Are we going after Elijah?" Caitlin asked.

"Nope," Mikayla answered. "That's all Klaus and Kassandra. We're talking about Oliver. Now, he and Elijah were fighting the werewolves together. I've heard that Oliver's been captured and is about to be executed. Now, look. If we can save Oliver, then we might be able to find out where Elijah is."

"Okay, so what do you want from us?" Marcel asked.

"Just a little distraction," Hayley answered. "Esther's son, Finn, he's the one that's controlling the werewolves. If you can keep him out of the way, we can get Oliver ourselves."

Hayley and Mikayla turned to leave.

Caitlin stood, walking closer. "Whoa, whoa, whoa." Hayley and Mikayla turned back. "You can't take on all those wolves by yourselves."

"Caitlin's right," Noah told them. "You'll get killed, and then Klaus and Kassandra will kill us for letting it happen."

Mikayla sighed. "We're not going in alone. The werewolves may be answering to the witches, but they still have an Alpha. We just have to find him."

Rousseau's Bar

(Song:) Give Me Your Poison - Mississippi Twilight

Auria was sitting at the bar, standing, about to leave.

Vincent/Finn took a seat next to her. "Fancy meeting you here. You're not leaving yet, are you?"

"Actually, I am," Auria answered. "Why? Creepy witch wants to hit up a few creepy spells?"

"Creepy?" Vincent/Finn repeated. "That... that hurts." Auria smiled. "No, seriously. Have a drink with me. It wouldn't be our first." Auria looked at him warily. "What? Oh, wait, let me guess. You're still with Marcel Gerard."

"Yep," Auria answered.

"Well, I'm sure that he wouldn't mind you sharing a drink with me, would he?" Vincent/Finn asked. "If anything, he should be grateful that a witch is still willing to talk to you. I mean, unless he's the dangerous, controlling kind of boyfriend like he is with everyone else in the Quarter."

"Not everyone else," Auria told him.

"Come on," Vincent/Finn told her. "One drink."

Auria sighed. "One drink."

Vincent/Finn nodded, smirking.

Plantation House - Outside

Kassandra was standing outside of the old Mikaelson Plantation House, in the middle of digging up Esther's grave where she had been buried for the Harvest in 1.11 Apres Moi, Le Deluge. She pulled her coffin out of the ground, turning to glare at the starlings that were chirping in the trees nearby. She began to douse the coffin in gasoline. "Are you watching this, Mother? Nothing says 'I loathe you' quite like desecrating a corpse."

Kassandra pulled out a lighter, lighting it.

She heard Elijah's voice. "Kassandra."

Kassandra turned to see Elijah on the other side of the yard.

Elijah walked toward the plantation house.

Kassandra was confused and suspicious, following him inside.

--

Inside - Living Room

Elijah was waiting.

Kassandra walked in.

Elijah started to tap the keys of the burned piano.

Kassandra slowly approached him.

Elijah smiled. "You seem troubled. If I didn't know better, I'd say you were worried."

"What has she done to you?" Kassandra asked.

"A thousand years of murder and mayhem, and Mother believes she can still save our souls," Elijah told her, running his finger across the piano keys. "She wants to talk. Perhaps we should listen?"

Kassandra smiled for a moment, angrily picking up a piece of overturned furniture. "Enough!" She threw the furniture toward Elijah. It passed right through him, making him disappear, revealing that he was only an illusion. "Enough of the petty illusions, Esther. Where is Elijah?"

Lenore/Esther appeared behind her. "He's preoccupied at the moment." Kassandra turned to face her. "I'm helping him find his way. But, not to worry, I'll return him to you. All I ask is that you hear me out."

"You expect me to sit through a sermon of your lies?" Kassandra asked.

"I have lied in the past, to my shame," Lenore/Esther told her. "But, I'm going to tell you the truth. I'm in the process of making Elijah into the man he was meant to be. And, I intend to do the same for you, Kassandra, and your brother, and your sister."

Kassandra glared at her angrily.

--~--

Kassandra and Lenore/Esther were still talking.

"This plantation, ruined by fire, which nearly killed the mother to your brother's child, and her sister Mikayla,," Lenore/Esther told her. "How sad, not to mention symbolic. After all, you never intended to build a true home here. Even as Hayley carried your brother's child, as Rebekah, Elijah and you sought to defend him, his thoughts were focused on only his conquest of the Quarter, while Rebekah and Elijah were each searching for their own ways to control the Quarter, and you were trying to remain as indifferent to it as you possibly could, to stay out of it. Tell me, how did that go?"

"I'm sorry," Kassandra told her sarcastically. "Is that some sort of motherly critique? Please feel free to choke on it."

"I mention your failures only to make a point, my dear," Lenore/Esther told her. "You've endured several lifetimes of misery, even from your own blood, never mind the suffering you've caused others. You yourself remain trapped in a perpetual state of despair. I have come to offer you a means to escape that cycle."

"And that's about all the hypocrisy I can take," Kassandra told her. "I suggest you give me my brother before I get angry."

"Such hatred," Lenore/Esther told her. "Such feigned indifference, trying to convince the world you care of nothing, not even your family. It breaks my heart to see you like this. The girl I loved. It is a shame that I have to punish Oliver for his sins. Perhaps, if you would accept my offer of becoming mortal again, taking a body of a human, I would grant him a pardon, just to see my youngest, alive child happy once again."

"Your love was a curse, an affect you feigned," Kassandra told her. "And you wouldn't be the first of my parents that killed someone that I may have gotten close to, the first time in centuries. You know, the vampire that had tried to take me down with the rest of my family. I had wondered for months how all of those vampires had died before Nik had gotten to them to feed them his blood, and I've come to figure it out. They didn't die of werewolf bites. They died from being fed on my father. He killed Diego, and now you're killing Oliver. The truth is, you're not better than Mikael, and like him, you seem to have crawled back from the grave simply to ruin your children." Lenore/Esther looked at her in shock. Kassandra realized that she hadn't known, looking at her in amusement. "Oh. You didn't know. Yes, the destroyer has risen, brought back to kill me and my brothers by the witch Davina. Surely Kol has revealed everything to you." Lenore/Esther looked away expressionlessly. Kassandra smiled. "Or, is Mother's loyal little boot-licker not quite so loyal, after all?"

--

Marcel's Loft

Marcel and Auria were talking alone.

"So, this mysterious broody guy?" Auria asked. "His name is Vincent Griffith. Witch family."

"Hold on," Marcel told her. "Did you say Vincent?"

"Yeah," Auria answered.

"Oh, it's worse than that, then," Marcel told her. "Your new drinking buddy has a thousand-year-old dead vampire inside of him named Finn Mikaelson."

Auria nodded sarcastically. "Great. So the very witch that wants to make my life a living hell has her own son spying on me. Okay, if Esther wanted to punish me already, then why have her son watch me instead of actually punishing me? Why have him stalking me like a creep? Why not just go right in for the kill?"

"Because that's not how Originals work," Marcel answered. "They want you to know that your life is literally in their hands, waiting to be taken away, or at the whim of what they want to do to you. Esther's trying to intimidate you. You can't let her."

"Oh, I won't," Auria told him. "And I won't let Vincent or Finn or whatever the hell his name is intimidate me, either."

"Good," Marcel told her. "And I know you won't. Because you're done with that guy."

Auria shook her head in determination. "No. I'm just getting started."

--

Plantation House - Living Room

Lenore/Esther and Kassandra were still talking inside the burnt-out husk of the old plantation house.

"If Mikael has returned, we will need to deal with him," Lenore/Esther told her.

Kassandra chuckled. "We? Is that a joke? Am I to forego centuries of hatred of my evil mother in order to join her in besting the very demon she herself allowed to raise all of her children?"

Lenore/Esther sighed. "I am not evil, Kassandra. I am your salvation. And Mikael? He was not always a demon."

--

Flashback - 10th Century

Kingdom of Norway

Day - Mikaelson Cottage

Young Esther was sitting in front of a fire with her children.

Young Mikael returned home.

Lenore/Esther: (voice over) "Long ago, he loved his children with all his heart."

Young Finn ran toward his father, wrapping his arms around his leg.

Young Mikael rubbed his head affectionately.

Lenore/Esther: (voice over) "He doted your brother, Finn, but it was our firstborn, Freya, who was the apple of his eye."

Freya lit up, running toward her father, jumping into his arms.

Mikael raised Freya in the air, holding her.

Now

Day - Plantation House - Living Room

Lenore/Esther and Kassandra were still talking.

Kassandra looked at her in annoyance. "You really think that saccharine recollections of ancient history will have any effect on me at all?"

"What I think is that you have gone mad from centuries of hating your parents," Lenore/Esther told her.

"Oh, I didn't hate you until I realized you were trying to kill us all," Kassandra told her.

Lenore/Esther continued on as if she hadn't spoken. "But, if you join me now, I can grant you peace. And, should Mikael return with the intent to harm you, I will strike him down myself. And, unlike your father and your brother, I will allow you the liberty to let yourself fall in love, the way that you haven't been able to in centuries, because of your brother. Isn't that what you've always wanted? Didn't you hate yourself, wonder for years what was wrong with you, what made you feel so numb and cold on the inside? Don't you want that to change? I can make that change, Kassandra."

Kassandra was slightly tempted, but she remained firm. "That's quite an offer. But, you know, I've never needed any help when it comes to killing parents. If I need any help at all, I'll go to the best. Nik. And..." She laughed sarcastically, shaking her head. "What's the point of falling in love when all it does to you in the end is rip you apart and tear you down? Maybe I'm better off this way."

--

Bayou - Woods

Hayley and Mikayla wandered through a more remote part of the bayou, looking around, coming upon a beat up trailer in the middle of the woods.

Mikayla heard a creaking sound, quickly turning around, catching two arrows in midair that had been shot by a man behind her. She dropped the arrows to the ground, looking at the man who had shot toward her in annoyance. "Is that your best shot? You're gonna have to do a lot better than that if you're gonna kill a hybrid."

The man walked toward Hayley and Mikayla, pulling a short sword out of its sheath with his free hand. His bow was clutched in the other. He had a quiver of arrows strapped on his back.

They heard Jackson's voice. "Stop!"

They turned immediately at the sound of his voice.

Jackson walked out of the trailer toward them.

Mikayla was in shock. "Jackson."

Jackson seemed relieved to see her, but seeming ashamed. "Mikayla. Hayley. I see you met my friend Ansel."

Hayley looked at the man behind her, realizing that was who he was talking about.

Ansel looked at Jackson in confusion. "You know them?"

"Yeah, actually, I do," Jackson answered. "Hayley is Mikayla's sister." He looked at Mikayla. "Mikayla was supposed to be my wife."

Mikayla was in shock from seeing Jackson after so long.

--~--

The French Quarter

Klaus and Lenore/Esther were walking along.

"So, how can you be talking to me while also talking to Kassandra?" Klaus asked. "Unless you're not really at either place."

"I'm not," Lenore/Esther told him. "It's an illusion spell so that I can tell you both what I want to tell you, but also stay out of harm's way."

"And to keep us separated," Klaus told her.

Lenore/Esther didn't answer. "A thousand years ago, in a fit of rage, you wrapped your bare hands around my neck and squeezed until I died. Do you even remember why?"

"Let's see," Klaus told her. "You turned us all into monsters. You cursed me, denied me of my hybrid nature. You lied to me about my father."

"It's that one above all," Lenore/Esther told him. "You killed me because I kept you from ever knowing your true father."

"My hatred for you runs so deep, it's difficult to pinpoint it's origin," Klaus told her angrily. "Maybe I hate that I'm the product of a whore's lechery?"

Lenore/Esther slapped Klaus in the face. "Watch your mouth. You will do well to remember that you are still my son."

"You judge me evil, yet it was your lust that made me what I am," Klaus told her.

"And not once have I ever regretted the love I had for your father," Lenore/Esther told him. "And, you have never known the truth of how that love came to be, or what happened in the months after Mikael and I lost your sister Freya to the plague. There are no words for the loss of a child, as you well know."

Klaus tried his best to keep his expression clear, pained at the reminder that he couldn't have his daughter there with him, even if she was still alive.

--

Bayou - Ansel's Trailer - Outside

Jackson, Mikayla and Hayley were sitting in chairs around the fire pit.

Ansel sat on a log across from them, sharpening his knife.

Jackson looked at Mikayla and Hayley. "After Francesca Guerrera took over the wolves, she offered me a moonlight ring as long as I'd call her Alpha. I declined." He looked at Mikayla. "And she demanded that I gave you up so she could kill you. I refused. So, a couple of her brothers dragged me out here and left me for dead." He looked at Hayley. "By the time I healed up, word had spread about what happened to you, and your baby." Hayley looked down at the mention of Hope. Jackson looked at Mikayla, willing her to understand. "And I wanted to go back. I really, really did, Mikayla. But they said that if I tried to set foot in the French Quarter, that they would kill you. So, I knew it was over, and I just drifted. And that's when I met Ansel. See, he's been teaching me the old ways. The traditions. What it means to be a wolf."

"You mean by living out in the middle of nowhere," Mikayla told him. "Jack, I'm a hybrid now."

Jackson looked down guiltily. "I know. I heard. Public execution. Cold, even for werewolves."

"I knew that they were going to kill me one day," Mikayla told him. "I just had to be prepared for it. I didn't want to die, not when there are so many wolves that need us. Jack, whatever you and your friend think of me, my kind is the wolves. Even if they did pledge allegiance to a witch, all that means is they need an Alpha. Ollie needs one, too."

"The thing is, Ollie betrayed me," Jackson told her. "He plotted with the Guerreras. He spilled his own people's blood. He stood back and watched as Francesca slit your throat."

Hayley sighed. "He was trying to make up for that."

"It doesn't matter," Jackson told them. "Witches have him. He's dead. Not that I care."

"You don't want to be the Alpha?" Hayley asked. "Fine. We'll save Oliver ourselves." Mikayla and Hayley stood. Ansel started packing up his bow and quiver, standing, walking toward them. Hayley sighed. "Hey, you got a problem, old man?"

"I have no love for vampires, but I will not allow a wolf to be killed by the witches," Ansel told them, walking past Hayley and Mikayla.

Mikayla turned to Jackson, giving him a look. "At least someone is interested."

Hayley, Mikayla and Ansel turned around, walking away, leaving.

Jackson watched them go, visibly torn and conflicted, sighing.

The French Quarter

(Song:) Is It True? - Maximo Park

Lenore/Esther and Klaus were still walking.

"After Freya died, Mikael was inconsolable," Lenore/Esther told him. "Compelled by his grief, we were forced to pack our things and set across the seas. Eventually, his despair would drive us apart, and that's when I saw him for the first time. Your father. I'd never seen a man like him. Powerful, yet wise, but loved by his people. And because Mikael had chosen to leave me alone in his grief, shunning me from his life, I found myself drawn to another."

"Spare me the sordid details of my origin," Klaus told her.

"I only speak the truth," Lenore/Esther told him.

"Then tell me this, Mother," Klaus told her. "Why did your Adonis abandon his son? Why did he allow me to raised by a monster who hated me? Why not claim me for himself, raise me among the wolves? Or was he as ashamed of his bastard as you were?"

"No, no, no," Lenore/Esther answered. "He loved you. It was I who forbade it. I knew if Mikael had learned of my infidelity, he would've destroyed us in his rage. I had no choice."

Klaus glared at her furiously.

Marcel's Loft

Auria was standing at the table, packing up a bag.

Marcel was pacing. "So, what? You're gonna spy on a witch with a thousand-year-old grudge-match against his family? Uh-uh. I'm not gonna let you go anywhere near that guy, Auria."

Auria turned to face him. "I can protect myself."

Marcel stopped pacing, turning to her. "Look, okay, I get it. You're mad at the witches, and you wanna get even, so--"

Auria walked closer. "It's not about getting even, Marcel. Look around. Everything around us..." She held her arms up. "All of this is because of the witches, because of the werewolves. We have nothing, when we used to have everything. Now, I'm gonna do something, and I am not going to stop until they are gone, because the longer that they're here, the more people that die or get damaged. Like the werewolf kids, or Cami, or Caitlin, or Noah, or the Mikaelsons, or Davina, or you. If I find a way to deal with them myself, then all of this ends, and all of us will be safe, so don't tell me to not get involved."

Marcel's phone rang, cutting the argument off. He sighed, looking at the Caller ID. "Hold that thought." He answered. "Tell me you have your Alpha."

Mikayla's voice was on the other line. "He's out of commission, but I got the next best thing." She, Hayley and Ansel were walking through the woods in the bayou. "I'm assuming you have a plan to keep Finn occupied?"

Ansel heard Finn's name, looking at Mikayla.

Marcel looked at Auria reluctantly. "Yeah. Yeah, I think I might have an idea."

Marcel hung up.

Auria looked at Marcel in confusion.

Plantation House - Outside

Lenore/Esther was standing at her dug up grave, looking at the coffin with her original body inside. She looked toward Kassandra. "When I learned I was with child, I went back to Mikael. I told him I was having his baby. He showed no joy, but neither did he suspect the truth."

Flashback - 10th Century

Mystic Falls, Virginia

Mikaelson Cottage

Esther was holding a newborn Baby Klaus in her arms.

Mikael knelt next to her to look at Baby Klaus.

Lenore/Esther: (voice over) "When your brother was born, it renewed his spirits."

Mikael held out his hand.

Baby Klaus gripped onto his finger with his own hands.

Lenore/Esther: (voice over) "We had Kol, Rebekah, you, Henrik..."

--

Now

Day - Plantation House - Outside

Lenore/Esther and Kassandra stood next to Esther's grave.

"Because of your brother, we were a family again," Lenore/Esther told her.

Kassandra stepped away from her. "A family built on secrets and lies."

"Oh, he was my secret joy," Lenore/Esther told her. "And to protect his secret, I denied him a life with his father. And that is nothing compared to what I did to all of you, by turning you into the immortal beings that you are now. But what if I could make up for all of that? By curing you of this sickness that's infected your soul? Whereas I put Kol and Finn into the bodies of a witch, the same could be done for you, Kassandra, and Rebekah, and Elijah. And your other brother, I shall place into a body of a werewolf. So you all can live out your days as what you all were always meant to be."

Kassandra turned away from her. "What could possibly make you think I would agree to such a thing?"

Lenore/Esther walked closer. "With mortality, you could start over. You could finally find the love that you have been depraved off." Kassandra backed away. Lenore/Esther continued to approach. "You could have a family of your own. Happiness, peace, all the things you have long been denied."

Kassandra stopped backing away. "Enough!"

"Just take the offer of a new life that you've never admitted to yourself about wanting, Kassandra," Lenore/Esther told her.

"Tell me where Elijah is, or I will kill you, in this body, or any other body you choose to jump into from now to bloody Armageddon," Kassandra told her. Lenore/Esther didn't answer. Kassandra tried to punch her. Lenore/Esther disappeared, reappearing behind her. Kassandra turned to face her, looking at her skeptically, looking down, noticing a necklace of beads around her neck with a pendant. "You're not really here at all, are you? This is just another pathetic illusion."

"I'm speaking to both my son and my daughter at once," Lenore/Esther told her. "It is easier and less time consuming."

"And less life-threatening," Kassandra told her. "And it does wonder for when you want Nik and me separate and occupied. You're trying to keep us apart so we don't go after Elijah."

"I had wished there was some part of you that yearned for an end to your vicious ways," Lenore/Esther told her. "But, if you are determined to perpetuate the cycles of the violence to which you have become accustomed? Well, then, I'll have to accommodate you."

The illusion of Lenore/Esther used magic to snap Kassandra's neck, letting her fall unconscious.

Flashback - 10th Century

Mystic Falls, Virginia

Night - Village

Klaus had stumbled out of the woods to find the bloodied bodies of several werewolves impaled on pikes. He was horrified, walking over to the nearest body, turning over his arm, revealing a tattoo of three crescent moons surrounded by a circle. He brushed the long hair out of the man's face so he could see who it was.

It was Ansel.

Klaus became distraught.

Night - Plantation House - Outside

Klaus walked onto the premises, in a rage. "Kassandra! Esther!"

"There's no reason for yelling," Lenore/Esther told him. "Your sister's right here." Kassandra was still lying unconscious next to Esther's grave. Klaus walked toward Kassandra. "What were you remembering?"

"The day I found out who my real father was," Klaus answered. "Only that was after Mikael slaughtered him."

"My darkest hour," Lenore/Esther told him. "Had you yourself not killed me soon thereafter, I doubt I ever would have recovered." Kassandra started to wake. Klaus took her arm, helping her stand. Lenore/Esther checked her pocket watch, which read 8:35 PM, or 20:35. "You woke earlier than I expected, Kassandra. No matter. It is time."

Kassandra looked at her warily. "Time for what?"

"You said you wanted Elijah," Lenore/Esther told them. "He's sleeping. Chained to the wall of a tomb in Lafayette Cemetery. I've lifted the spell that hides him. You are free to take him home. Now, his own mind will work out his choice for him. When he wakes, he'll make his own decision. Every single thing I've said to the two of you tonight is the truth. Whether you choose to believe it is up to you."

Klaus and Kassandra glared at her, rushing away to find Elijah, leaving.

The French Quarter

(Song:) Brain Cells - Maximo Park

Auria walked down the street toward Rousseau's, walking inside.

--

Rousseau's Bar - Outside - Alley

Marcel and Noah were in the alley behind the bar.

"All good," Noah told him. "Not a werewolf in sight."

"Good," Marcel told him. "I appreciate you being here."

Noah nodded. "How's Auria doing?"

"She'll be fine," Marcel answered. "Keep an eye out for the wolves, all right?"

Noah nodded, walking away to check on the perimeter.

--

Inside

Vincent/Finn and Auria were sitting at a table.

"Thanks for coming," Auria told him. She raised a glass. "Let's have a wonderful evening and have a drink."

--

Lafayette Cemetery

Ansel, Hayley and Mikayla walked their way through the foggy paths, trying to find Oliver. They reached the lycee, walking up the steps to enter.

--

Lycee

Ansel, Hayley and Mikayla found a bloodied Oliver suspended by his wrists.

Mikayla walked toward him instantly, shaking him to wake him. "Ollie! Ollie, wake up."

Oliver was very weak. "The hell are you doing?" He looked at Ansel. "Who the hell is that?"

"We're here to save your ass," Hayley told him.

"Please tell me you know where Elijah is," Mikayla told him.

Oliver shook his head weakly.

Ansel walked toward the window to look outside. "They know we're here."

Hayley and Mikayla focused their hearing to hear sounds outside.

--

Outside

Werewolves were jumping down from crypts, making their way to the lycee.

--

Lycee

Mikayla looked at Oliver and the chains that bound him. "Sorry. No time to be gentle." She pulled on the chains, breaking them. Oliver started to fall. Mikayla caught him, keeping him standing. "Let's go."

--

Rousseau's Bar

Vincent/Finn and Auria were still sitting at their table.

Auria had just finished her whiskey.

Vincent/Finn chuckled. "Whoa. Trouble in paradise?"

"Maybe," Auria told him. "I, uh... you were right about something earlier. Marcel might be a little controlling, but it's only because he's trying to protect me."

--

Outside - Alley

Marcel was standing in the in the alley behind Rousseau's, listening.

He heard Vincent/Finn's voice. "Trying to protect you?"

"Mm-hmm," Auria answered.

"From what?" Vincent/Finn asked. "May I ask?"

--

Inside

Vincent/Finn and Auria sat at their table.

"I mean, he is the reason that you're in danger," Vincent/Finn told her.

"It's not just Marcel," Auria told him. "I will admit, some of it's my own making. But I was only trying to do the right thing when everyone was trying to do the wrong one. I mean... yes, things got out of control, but it shouldn't have ever been an issue to begin with." She looked down. "Sometimes, it feels as if I'm being... haunted. It's almost as if I have to be so careful on who I do and don't talk to. It's... crazy."

"So you're anxious?" Vincent/Finn asked. "Paranoid? Suspicious?"

--

Outside - Alley

Noah and Marcel were in the alley in the back, listening to their conversation.

They could hear Auria's voice. "All of the above."

They could hear Vincent/Finn's voice. "But you seem to be so fearless."

--

Inside

Vincent/Finn and Auria sat at their table.

"So, tell me, Auria," Vincent/Finn told her. "If you're so fearless, if you're as powerful as I think you are, what does a girl like you have to be afraid of, from anyone?" Auria raised her gaze to look at him cautiously, wondering if her cover had been blown. "Because it seems to me that you have your own fate already decided for you."

(Song Ends)

--

Outside - Alley

Marcel thought Auria's cover had been blown, opening the door to go inside.

A werewolf appeared behind Noah and Marcel. "You must be lost." Noah and Marcel turned to face him. "Vampires caught in the Quarter are to be killed on sight."

Another werewolf appeared behind Noah and Marcel.

Noah and Marcel turned back to back to face the werewolves on either side of them, bracing themselves for a fight.

Lafayette Cemetery - Lycee

Ansel prepared his quiver.

Hayley and Mikayla wrapped Oliver's arm around their shoulders.

"Just leave me here," Oliver told them. "Go."

"I'm not leaving you," Mikayla told him.

"To hell with that," Hayley told them. "If they want a fight, I'll give them a fight."

Ansel waked closer. "No. I came with you to save one of my own, not watch as you kill scores of them." Hayley rolled her eyes. "Take your friend out the back, and move as fast as you can. I'll hold them off here."

Mikayla sighed, pulling Oliver and Hayley toward the back. "Come on, quickly."

Hayley and Mikayla helped Oliver out the back of the lycee.

--

Outside

Ansel brandished his sword at the incoming werewolves, cutting them all down.

--~--

Rousseau's Bar

Vincent/Finn and Auria sat at their table.

Auria forced herself to smile. "My fate decided for me? I don't really believe in fate."

Vincent/Finn leaned forward against the table. "Then what do you believe in?"

Auria looked nervous and uncomfortable.

--

Outside - Alley

Marcel and Noah were fighting the two werewolves in the alley behind the bar.

Noah punched Werewolf 1 in the stomach, punching him in the face twice, kicking him back into the wall behind him.

Marcel pushed Werewolf 2 back. Werewolf 2 punched him in the face, making him turn toward the building next to them.

--

Inside

Vincent/Finn and Auria sat at their table.

Auria took a deep breath, smirking. "I'm not really sure what I believe in."

"Oh, that's not true," Vincent/Finn told her. "There's always something that we believe in."

--

Outside - Alley

Marcel and Noah were fighting the werewolves in the alley behind the bar.

Marcel broke off a pipe off the building next to them, hitting Werewolf 2 in the face, slamming it into his stomach.

Werewolf 1 rushed toward Noah. Noah sidestepped, turning toward him, pushing him into the building with vampire speed and strength, making him fall to the ground.

--

Inside

Vincent/Finn and Auria sat at their table.

"Love, hate," Vincent/Finn told her. "Angels, demons. Heaven, Hell. Life..." He raised his gaze to meet hers. "Death. So what is it for you?"

Auria took a moment to respond. "All of the above."

--

Outside - Alley

Marcel and Noah were fighting the werewolves in the alley behind the bar.

Werewolf 2 knocked the pipe out of Marcel's hands, grabbing his shirt, lifting him from the ground, growling.

Noah plunged his thumbs into the eyes of Werewolf 1, gouging them out of his head, killing him, letting his body fall.

Werewolf 2 still held Marcel in the air, biting him on the arm.

--

Marcel's Loft

Caitlin was sitting at a table, sketching a beautiful drawing of flowers and fire. She gasped suddenly at the pain as the link between her and Marcel made an identical wound in her arm. She looked at the werewolf bite on her arm, confused as the blood started to run. She stood, backing away from the drawing.

--

Rousseau's Bar - Outside - Alley

Noah rushed toward Marcel and Werewolf 2, pushing the wolf into the nearby van, shoving his head through the window, shattering the glass.

Marcel fell to the ground.

Noah pushed his hand through Werewolf 2's chest, about to rip out his heart. Werewolf 2 managed to grab his arm, twisting it behind his back, biting his neck, throwing him into the electrician box, making it spark violently and him fall to the ground. He stalked toward Noah.

Marcel managed to stand, pushing his hand through Werewolf 2's back, ripping out his heart through his back, letting the body fall. He dropped the heart, looking at Noah, smiling, holding a hand toward him.

Noah smirked, taking his hand, letting him help him stand.

--

Inside

Vincent/Finn and Auria sat at their table.

"So, tell me, Auria," Vincent/Finn told her. "What do you believe about yourself?"

"That I'm in a toxic life that I refuse to walk away from," Auria answered.

"And why won't you walk away?" Vincent/Finn asked.

"Because I know that if I walk away now, I won't have anywhere left to walk away to," Auria answered. "That, and this city needs saving before everything ends in bloodshed, chaos and carnage."

Vincent/Finn took her hand in his, surprising her. "Auria, I'm an expert in dangerous lives, unhealthy patterns. I've broken free of some of my own. And I know that this city needs saving. And I can help you do both, if you let me."

Vincent/Finn looked Auria in the eye.

Auria looked at his hand holding hers, smiling a small smile, slowly relaxing.

--

Lafayette Cemetery

Hayley and Mikayla pulled Oliver toward the exit of the cemetery.

Aiden arrived, leading another group of werewolves. "Come out! We know you're here."

Hayley and Mikayla looked at Oliver, bracing him against the wall, walking out into the aisle to face the werewolves.

"Why don't you just let us go and we can call it a day?" Hayley asked.

Mikayla gave Aiden a significant look.

Aiden looked torn. "No, I don't think so."

"I don't want to do this the hard way," Mikayla told them.

"Fine," a werewolf told them. "Then you die. Again."

The werewolves braced themselves for a fight.

Oliver staggered over to Hayley and Mikayla before anyone could move, looking at the werewolves. "You idiots! You're lining up to fight a hybrid that died for our sins but is still fighting for all of us? For what? So you can kill me? All because some witch gave an order? I know I ain't innocent, but I never lost sight of what I was fighting for. We were gonna be a pack. But now?" He stepped toward the wolves. "We're turning on each other. Killing your own people? We do that... we're nothing."

Hayley, Oliver and Mikayla tensed in case the werewolves started a fight.

Aiden waited for a moment, clearing a path so they could leave without violence.

Hayley and Mikayla took Oliver's arms, wrapping them around their shoulder, helping him walk through the aisle of werewolves toward the exit of the cemetery.

--

Elsewhere

Klaus had arrived, walking through the fog covered aisle of the cemetery. He heard the sounds of fighting nearby, rushing toward it to investigate.

Ansel was still mowing down werewolves with his sword in front of the lycee, taking out four.

Klaus rushed up behind one of the werewolves, snapping his neck, killing him, letting him fall.

Ansel held up his sword until he saw that it was Klaus.

Klaus was shocked to see him. "You."

Ansel was stunned. "Niklaus?"

Klaus was panicking. "No. No. You're not real."

Klaus started to walk away.

Ansel followed him. "Niklaus."

"No!" Klaus told him. "You're a phantom, conjured by Esther. That's all that you are. Mother, stop this charade. I know that thing is not real."

Ansel was confused yet pleased to see his son, approaching Klaus carefully. "Look at me, Niklaus." Klaus slowly turned to face him. "I am flesh and blood. Your flesh and blood."

"You've been dead a thousand years," Klaus told him.

"And through that time, I lingered on the Other Side, watching you let the world fall apart, until I woke four moons past, in the land of wolves like myself," Ansel told him.

Klaus shook his head in denial. "No. No! No, you're just in my head. You're an illusion, meant by my mother to sway me to accept her bargain."

Ansel looked at him in confusion. "I do not speak for Esther. I know nothing of her bargain." He walked closer. "But you are my son."

Ansel reached toward him.

Klaus grabbed his arm so he could see the screen moon tattoo on his arm.

Ansel looked at Klaus curiously.

Klaus looked at Ansel. "And, if what you say is real, you are nothing to me. For all I care, you can crawl back to Hell."

Klaus rushed away, leaving.

Ansel watched him go, hurt.

--

Marcel's Loft

Marcel and Noah were sitting on the couch, still bitten and bleeding.

Caitlin was still bitten and bleeding, having two vials of blood, walking toward them, handing them each one.

Marcel and Noah drank the vials of blood.

Noah's bite mark on his neck healed.

Marcel and Caitlin's bite marks on their arms healed.

"Thank God Klaus' blood cures a wolf bite," Caitlin told them.

"Yeah," Marcel agreed.

"Thing is, we're running low, so new rule," Caitlin told them. "Don't get bit."

Noah smirked. "I got bit saving your asses."

Caitlin smirked, sitting next to him on the couch.

Marcel chuckled. "Yeah, yeah, you did good, too. Even back in 1925, you never fought like that."

"Well, I've learned a few new things," Noah told them.

Auria walked in. "Hey."

"Hey, Auria," Caitlin told her. "You okay?"

"Yeah," Auria answered. "To be honest, not the worst date I've had in this city."

"Yeah, it seemed like you had him wrapped around your finger by the time we left," Marcel told her bitterly, jealous.

"It's more than that," Auria told them. "Vincent/Finn, whoever he is, I think he likes me."

"I'm not sure I would call that good news," Marcel told her.

"Don't be jealous," Auria told him. "Trust me, there is nothing that he could do to make me feel for him what I feel for you."

"All right, stop being mushy and get to the good part," Noah told her.

"I'm his blind spot," Auria told them. "If he's distracted, he's vulnerable, which means I can help take him down."

Marcel sighed uneasily, looking at Caitlin and Noah.

Noah shook his head, not knowing what to tell him.

Caitlin looked from Marcel to Auria, seeming impressed.

Bayou - Ansel's Trailer - Outside

Oliver and Mikayla were sitting at the fire.

Mikayla was cleaning Oliver up.

Jackson walked closer. "Well, you got him. Great. Where's Ansel?"

"He was busy being a man," Mikayla told him. "He should be right behind us."

"Jack, I have to tell you," Oliver told him weakly.

"I already know, Ollie," Jackson told him. "You sold us out to Francesca."

"Look, I know that I can't make up for that," Oliver told him. "But you need to hear this." Jackson looked away, finishing his drink. "You're the one." Oliver struggled to stand. Jackson stood defensively, grabbing a nearby staff to use in a fight, if necessary. "You're the Alpha. Our people are not meant to be slaves. You can free them." Oliver looked between Jackson and Mikayla. "Both of you can. Together."

Oliver started to cough up blood, falling to his knees.

Jackson dropped the staff worriedly. "Ollie? Ollie?" He looked at Mikayla. "What is wrong with him?"

Mikayla was in shock, in worried denial. "It's the witches."

Jackson knelt next to Oliver worriedly. "Oliver?"

"They said he only had until midnight," Mikayla told him.

Jackson propped Oliver up in his arms, trying to resuscitate him. "Stay with me."

Oliver coughed up blood. "Mikayla..." Mikayla knelt on the other side of Oliver worriedly, biting her wrist to feed him blood, but nothing was helping him. He wasn't healing. "Jack..."

Mikayla and Jackson looked horrified.

Oliver bled from his eyes and nose, dying in Jackson's arms.

Jackson gently laid him on the ground, still holding his hand.

Mikayla and Jackson looked at each other in shocked denial, both of them about to cry, horrified that they couldn't have done anything to stop Oliver from dying in front of them.

Lafayette Cemetery - Crypt

(Song:) Letters from the Sky - Civil Twilight

Elijah was still chained to the ceiling, suspended from his wrists, unconscious.

Kassandra walked in, seeing him, immediately walking toward him, trying to break the chains to no avail. She noticed the poppet that bound the spell that kept the chains from being broken, quickly ripping the poppet away, throwing it aside, breaking down the chains, catching Elijah from falling, setting him on the floor, trying to wake him. "Wake up, brother. Elijah."

Klaus walked in. "I see you've found him. Why won't he wake?"

Lenore/Esther appeared behind them. "He won't. Not yet. Which gives the three of us one last chance to discuss my offer."

Kassandra laid Elijah on the floor, breaking the cuffs off of his wrists.  "You promised me Elijah's safe return."

"Or was that a lie, just like that ghoulish atrocity outside claiming to be my father, back from the dead?" Klaus asked.

Kassandra looked at Klaus in shocked confusion.

"Your father's return is real," Lenore/Esther told him. "I pulled him from the Other Side before it collapsed, left him in the bayou to join the wolves. And I used the execution of one of his own to draw him here, where I knew he'd find you."

"So you weren't just using Oliver's execution to draw me to you, you used to draw his father to Nik?" Kassandra asked incredulously, turning to face her. "To what end? Besides our torment?"

Lenore/Esther approached them. She looked at Klaus. "I brought him here to be the father you never had. To teach you to be the man you always longed to be. Once you are remade as a werewolf, you can join him."

Klaus approached Lenore/Esther. "His return changes nothing."

"It changes everything," Lenore/Esther told him. "It is my gift to you. This offer is your last chance at salvation. Reject me now, and you will live out your endless days unloved and alone. Do not refuse me out of some ancient spite."

"Not spite," Klaus told her. "Hatred. A pure and perfect hatred that's greater now than the day I took your life."

"Why?" Lenore/Esther asked. "After all I've done to explain to you, why must you persist--"

Klaus lost his temper, grabbing Lenore/Esther by her throat, pushing her against the wall. "Because you came for my child! My daughter. Your own blood."

Lenore/Esther struggled to breathe. "You... don't... understand."

"My. Child!" Klaus told her.

Lenore/Esther gasped for breath. "I had to!"

Lenore/Esther raised two fingers, using magic to give Klaus a pain infliction spell and make his nose start to bleed. Klaus gripped her throat even more tighter, making her stop and whimper in pain.

"You declared war when you came after our family," Kassandra told her. "And, for that, I will make you suffer as only I can." She smirked. "After all, I am my mother's daughter."

Klaus threw Lenore/Esther to the floor.

Lenore/Esther tried to catch her breath.

Klaus and Kassandra turned to Elijah, taking either of his arms, wrapping them around their shoulders, pulling him out of the crypt, leaving.

Lenore/Esther backed into the wall, leaning against it, lost in the past.

Flashback - 10th Century

Kingdom of Norway

Day - Village

Young Esther was standing in front of her sister Dahlia, pregnant and upset.

Young Finn clutched to Young Esther's side, afraid.

Dahlia held onto Freya's arm.

"Please, do not do this," Young Esther told her.

"You wanted a family," Dahlia told her. "Fate said otherwise, and so you came to me. And, for a price, I granted your wish." She pulled on Freya's arm in emphasis. "Now, I must collect."

"When Mikael returns from his journey, I swear--" Young Esther started.

"You will tell him Freya grew ill and died," Dahlia told her.

Young Esther started to cry. "No, Dahlia!"

"You were forced to burn her body to stop the spread of plague," Dahlia told her.

"Sister, please," Young Esther told her. "I cannot give up my child."

"You've already offered me more than just this one child," Dahlia told her. "Our bargain was for the firstborn, and every firstborn of each generation that is to come, for as long as your line shall last."

Young Esther became furious. "If you do this, if you take my daughter, I swear to you, I will return to the black arts. I will grow in power as a witch, and I will make you pay!"

"You power is nothing against mine, foolish girl," Dahlia told her. "You knew the bargain you made. And, should you defy me, then I will take all your children. Including little Finn." Young Finn started to cry. Dahlia gestured to Young Esther's pregnant stomach. "Even unborn Elijah."

"No, Dahlia," Young Esther told her. Dahlia angrily picked Freya up, walking quickly away from Young Finn and Young Esther. Freya became frightened. "No!"

"Mommy!" Freya cried.

"Freya!" Young Esther cried. "Dahlia, please!"

Freya screamed in fear. "Mommy!"

Freya continued to scream.

Dahlia took her away, leaving.

Young Esther broke, crying in despair.

Night - Lafayette Cemetery - Crypt

Lenore/Esther was still sitting on the floor, recovering from nearly being strangled, and horrified at the memory of Dahlia taking Freya.

Vincent/Finn walked in to find her this way, concerned and confused. "Mother? What happened?"

Lenore/Esther didn't look at him. "Niklaus and Kassandra refused my offer."

--

Lafayette Cemetery - Crypt

Lenore/Esther was still sitting on the floor.

Vincent/Finn knelt next to her. "They're fools. Your actions saved this family. If that child had lived..."

Vincent/Finn couldn't finish, unable to speak the words.

"Dahlia would return," Lenore/Esther finished gravely. "And she would come for us all."
