chapter 19 - When the Levee Breaks

Outfits in the external link

From 2.18 "Night Has a Thousand Eyes", in Mikayla/Jackson's room, Mikayla and Hayley were sitting on the bed.

Marcel: (voice over) "Previously on Worlds Colliding (The Originals)"

"I say we take Hope and Jackson and the pack and we leave town," Hayley told her. "Tonight."

From 2.18 "Night Has a Thousand Eyes", in the courtyard, Klaus, Elijah, Eva/Rebekah, Hayley, Mikayla and Freya were talking.

"There is a jazz club in Algiers by the name of St. James Infirmary," Klaus told them. "Noah has acquired it, and Josephine is fortifying it as a sanctuary against magic." He turned to Hayley. "Pack your things." Hayley rolled her eyes. Klaus looked at Mikayla. "I trust that you will do everything you can to protect them."

From 2.18 "Night Has a Thousand Eyes", in Aiden's apartment, Aiden was on the phone with Klaus.

"While my hands are full, I need you to serve as my eyes and ears," Klaus told him.

From 2.18 "Night Has a Thousand Eyes", in the courtyard, Josh and Aiden were talking about Jackson.

"I can't just stab him in the back," Aiden told him.

"I don't know if you have a choice," Josh told him worriedly.

From 2.18 "Night Has a Thousand Eyes", outside the compound, Jackson, Mikayla, Hayley and Hope were in the alley behind the compound, waiting.

Jackson sighed, anxiously rubbing his hands together. "He should be here by now. Something must have happened."

Noah rushed toward them, looking at them suspiciously. "Everything okay?"

Jackson looked a little alarmed.

Mikayla played it off, giving Noah a look. "Are we going to Algiers or what?"

"Right now, that club is the safest place in town," Noah told them.

From 2.18 "Night Has a Thousand Eyes", in the church, Dahlia confronted the Mikaelsons. "You lost the one thing that you could have used against me." She held up the knife. "The weapon you created."

Dahlia dropped the knife into a fire, using magic to destroy it.

Freya started to run forward. "No!"

Kassandra held her back.

From 2.18 "Night Has a Thousand Eyes", in the courtyard, the Mikaelsons were talking.

"This was not my plan," Freya told them. "You rushed it and made but a single weapon."

"Your materials are easily found," Kassandra told her.

Klaus rushed toward Mikael, pushing him against the wall, pushing the tip of the white oak stake into his heart, but not staking him.

Freya walked toward them. "No!"

Elijah held Freya back.

Klaus angrily staked Mikael in the heart.

Freya struggled, screaming in denial and devastation. "No!"

Klaus turned to face the siblings. "Viking ash is indeed rare. But all you really need is a burning Viking corpse."

From 2.18 "Night Has a Thousand Eyes", in the Quarter, Dahlia and Josephine faced each other.

"I must use you to send a message to all those who would side against me," Dahlia told her.

Dahlia took the bow from Josephine, circling around her to stand behind her, using the bow to slit her throat, letting her fall to the ground, leaving Josephine to bleed to death in the street with the violin at her side.

Day One

Morning - Abattoir Compound - Dining Room

(Song:) Here We Go - New Birth Brass Band

Klaus, Elijah and Kassandra were in the dining room.

Klaus was sitting at the table, having a mimosa, looking at Elijah. "Something the matter, brother? Can I offer you a drink, perhaps?"

"Strangely enough, I'm not in a mimosa mood," Elijah told them.

"Fantastic," Kassandra told them. "More for me."

Kassandra walked toward the table, pouring herself a drink.

"Let's discuss strategy, shall we?" Elijah asked. "Just wondering if you actually have one. We can begin with Mikael's ashes. Given that they are the main ingredient in our weapon against Dahlia, care to tell me where they disappeared to?"

"Elijah, I have compelled the city's finest pastry chef for your own person edification, and yet you ignore my efforts in favor of needless concerns," Klaus told him.

Eva/Rebekah walked in. "Can we stop talking so loudly?" She saw tea on the table, walking toward it. "Give me that."

"What's the matter?" Kassandra asked. "New witch body not up to last night's bender?"

Eva/Rebekah picked up the tea cup. "So I had a few. It's not every day you lose your father at the hands of your brother." She sat across from Klaus at the other head of the table, raising her glass. "Again."

Kassandra raised her glass, taking a drink.

Eva/Rebekah took a drink.

"Whoever said opportunity only knocks once, eh?" Klaus asked, chuckling. "Oh, come on. We all fled Mikael's tyranny for centuries. I thought the mood this morning might be a bit more jubilant."

"Under normal circumstances, the annihilation of our father would be rather commendable, Niklaus," Elijah told him, sitting next to Klaus. "Unfortunately, we have a greater threat to contend with."

Klaus stood, turning away, pouring himself another drink. "You know, for someone who's been invited to a celebratory breakfast, you're proving quite the buzzkill."

"Well, Niklaus, if indeed anything has killed the 'buzz', as you say, perhaps it was because murdering Father alienated the one person who truly knows how to defeat Dahlia," Elijah told him.

Klaus turned to face them. "If Freya wants to be a part of this family, she should be willing to accept us." He sat down. "Warts and all."

Kassandra took a drink.

"Elijah's right," Eva/Rebekah told him. "Freya loved Mikael. And you've likely ruined everything."

"Pity," Klaus told them sarcastically. "Whatever shall I do?"

"Whatever you please, apparently," Kassandra answered.

"Do not mistake my high spirits for lack of clarity," Klaus told them. "I know full well the threat we face, and I intend to deal with it personally."

Kassandra heard footsteps from down in the courtyard. "Someone's here."

(Song Ends)

Courtyard

Klaus, Elijah, Kassandra and Eva/Rebekah walked downstairs to see Josephine waiting.

"Josephine," Elijah told her.

Josephine was obviously being controlled by Dahlia, as she was dead and reanimated. "Forgive me for calling so early, Elijah, but I've come bearing a message from your Aunt Dahlia. She is owed a debt, and she means to be paid."

"She can writhe in Hell first," Klaus told her.

"For merely taking what your mother promised her?" Josephine/Dahlia asked. "If you must harbor hatred, isn't it better spent on the one who traded your child away a thousand years ago? Blame Esther, if you must, but I seek only to fulfill a bargain. A bargain that consequently resulted in your very existence. Perhaps you should be thanking me."

Kassandra stepped closer. "Dahlia."

"My child, I prefer 'Aunt Dahlia'," Josephine/Dahlia told her.

Klaus stepped closer. "You dare enter my home?"

"I only came for what is mine," Josephine/Dahlia told them. "The time has come to add the child's power to my own." The reanimation spell was fading on Josephine's body. Blood started to drip from beneath the scarf around her neck. "Though, I do not detect her here. I see you've used a spell to cloak her. No matter. Such spells will yield, as will you. Say your farewells. You have till nightfall tomorrow. And then the child shall be mine. Be a dear and inform the mother and the other aunt. No reason we can't be civilized about this."

Klaus swung his arm to decapitate Josephine, making the head and the body fall to the floor.

Elijah, Klaus, Eva/Rebekah and Kassandra exchanged a look.

Worlds Colliding (The Originals)

--

St. James Infirmary - Outside

Werewolf guards were standing outside.

--

Inside

Hayley and Mikayla were standing together.

Hayley was holding Hope, rocking her soothingly, taking a deep breath. "Okay. Good news? Dahlia still doesn't know that we're here. Bad news? She's given us until tomorrow night, and then she's coming for Hope. I say we get the hell out of here."

"Look, Hayley, think," Mikayla told her. "Freya said that Dahlia was drawn to Hope's magic. No matter how far we go, she's still gonna be able to track us. At least this place is spelled. No one can do magic here. Not Hope or Dahlia."

"Sure, this place is spelled, but we've seen bigger magic than this break," Hayley told her. "I say we run while we can."

Hayley set Hope in her play pen.

Hope cooed, looking around.

Mikayla looked at Hope, worried, sighing. "It's a risk either way. She's just so little. It's not fair. Witchcraft, magical spells. She didn't ask for any of this."

Hayley got an idea. "Which means that she wouldn't miss it if it was gone." Mikayla looked at her in confusion. "Mikayla, maybe that's it. Dahlia could only sense her when she's using magic. So, what if there's a way of stopping her from doing it in the first place?"

"She's just a baby," Mikayla told her. "How are we gonna do that?"

"I have an idea," Hayley told her. "Although, it's dangerous. Especially now."

Aiden walked toward them. "Let me do it." Hayley and Mikayla looked at him in concern. Aiden looked at them solemnly. "Look, whatever it is, it's my fault you didn't get away yesterday."

"No, that wasn't your fault, Aiden," Mikayla told him.

"Please, Mikayla, just give me a chance to make it up to you," Aiden told her.

Mikayla looked at Hayley, turning to Aiden, nodding.

Lafayette Cemetery

Freya was setting up a memorial for Mikael using large stones, a bowl of crystals, and some deer antlers, among other objects.

Several of them had Norse runes carved into them, including the rune "gar," which meant spear, and was attributed to Odin's spear Gungnir in Norse mythology.

Freya knelt in front of the memorial, looking at it sadly for a moment.

Eva/Rebekah arrived, unhappy. "Freya? I am so, so sorry."

"About what?" Freya asked. "Certainly not about our father. I alone mourn him, as I alone loved him. And now, because of Klaus, my father is taken from me once more."

Eva/Rebekah looked at the memorial. "I never knew the man you're mourning. He showed more tenderness to you yesterday than we have ever seen. All I can recall is his terrible temper, his awful cruelty. Especially to Klaus."

Freya sighed. "That is not an excuse."

"Isn't it?" Eva/Rebekah asked. Freya didn't answer, looking away. "I know Klaus can be infuriating. Treacherous, even. But there is no one better to have at your side against someone like Dahlia." Freya angrily stood, walking away. Eva/Rebekah followed her. "Klaus wants to keep Hope safe as much as you want your freedom. We need to work together."

Freya turned to face her. "How can you defend him? I was abducted by Dahlia, spent years under her control, and yet he acts as if I am the enemy. I have given you all every reason to trust me, and still, Klaus rejects me." She picked up a smaller stone with the same 'gar' rune carved into it. "And honestly? I cannot understand why you would continue to trust him." She sighed, walking past Eva/Rebekah, but before she left, she stopped, turning toward her sister. "You, Kassandra and Elijah have a choice. From now on, it's either Klaus, or me."

Freya walked away, leaving.

Eva/Rebekah looked conflicted and exhausted.

--

Abattoir Compound - Klaus' Painting Room

Klaus was furiously painting an abstract piece, having covered a large canvas in dark red, gold and green/brown paint, which had a mottled appearance.

Elijah and Kassandra walked in to find Klaus absorbed in his artwork.

Elijah rolled his eyes, sighing in annoyance. "You do understand there is no time?" Klaus merely glanced at them, looking away, going back to his work. "Niklaus, if Mikael's ashes are the key to ending Dahlia, then surely you must see the need to share their whereabouts?"

"I see nothing of the sort," Klaus told them.

Kassandra walked closer in confusion, tilting her head slightly, standing next to the windows. "It is no secret that you often strategize while painting. I assume you have a plan, here."

"You ask that I share my strategies so you can run straight to Freya and bring her into the circle of trust?" Klaus asked. "I think not."

Kassandra turned to face him in frustration. "It is too dangerous for you, brother. You cannot do this alone."

"And who should I trust to protect Hope?" Klaus asked. "Our new-found sister with duplicitous motives of her own? Mikayla, whose allegiance to her husband grows stronger by the day? Or, how about Jackson, self-declared king of the wolves?"

"You need only trust us," Elijah told him.

"I would love to trust you, Elijah," Klaus told him. "Now, more than ever, I need my brother and sister, my closest allies, my blood." He hesitated for a moment, frowning in frustration. "But, you have not been the same since Mother got inside your head." Elijah looked hurt, walking away. "Your judgment is not what it was. You are no what you were." He looked a Kassandra. "And you, dear sister, are clinging so desperately to the word of a duplicitous stranger telling you what you want to hear."

Kassandra sighed. "Freya is our blood, brother. She also has every reason to want Dahlia's demise. We have no cause to distrust her."

"Which is a far cry from being trustworthy," Klaus told them.

"Niklaus, if we cannot trust one another, we can't work together," Elijah told him.

Klaus sighed, returning to his painting. "No, we cannot."

Kassandra frowned, clearly frustrated with his attitude.

Elijah was hurt by his distrust of him.

--

Klaus' Study

Aiden pulled a pair of the cursed manacles that prevented a witch from doing magic out of a wooden box, gently stowing them into his inner jacket pocket.

Klaus walked in, wiping off his paint-smeared hands on a rag, looking surprised to see him. "Aiden. To what do I owe this visit?"

Aiden was clearly startled by this encounter, trying his best to calm his nerves. "I... just wanted to tell you that Hayley, Mikayla, and Hope are at Noah's jazz club, and they're safe there. Very well-protected."

"Well, you can hardly be my eyes and ears there if you're standing before me," Klaus told him. He gave Aiden a hard look. "Why are you here?"

Aiden was at a loss for excuses, gesturing to a stuffed bunny sitting on Klaus' desk. "Uh, this." He picked it up. "Hayley said she left it here yesterday. I guess it's Hope's favorite."

Aiden laughed nervously.

Klaus seemed slightly suspicious, shrugging it off, chuckling, walking closer. "Your loyalty is refreshing." Aiden nodded, walking toward the door. "However, your life will be worth less than the velveteen on this little rabbit if I find my faith in you has been misplaced. Understood?"

Aiden looked at Klaus, smiling nervously, walking out, leaving.

Klaus continued to look suspicious, but after a moment, he smirked.

--

Lafayette Cemetery - Rayvnne Tomb

Auria was channeling her family's magic to do a spell, looking at her parents' names on their drawers.

Phelan and Gaia Rayvnne.

Caitlin and Davina were nearby.

Aiden and Josh were standing at a table behind them.

Caitlin looked at Auria. "So, your parents were witches who went along with all the sacrifices and crap, so much that they nearly got themselves exposed in the Quarter, so they had to be put down by other witches?"

"Yeah," Auria answered. "They were a lot like Eva Sinclair. They got obsessed. Hurt people. Killed people."

"That's why your so adamant about peace and stopping sacrifices," Davina realized. "Because of what your parents did. I'm so sorry, Auria."

Auria nodded, sighing. "Yeah." She stood, turning to face Aiden and Josh. "So, what about Klaus?"

"He doesn't suspect a thing," Aiden told them.

"Oh, right," Caitlin told him sarcastically. "Yes, I'm sure that Klaus 'Color Me Paranoid' Mikaelson totally fell for your whole, 'I came across the river for Hope's bunny' ruse."

Aiden turned to Auria, holding up the cursed shackles. "Look, these manacles are spelled to neutralize witch power, right?" Auria answered. "So, Auria, if you could transfer the magic from these onto something smaller? Just think about it. If the baby can't give off magic, then Dahlia won't be able to track her."

"I can try," Auria told them.

"What difference does it make?" Caitlin asked. "I thought Hope was already safe at Noah's club."

"Jackson wants to take the wolves someplace safe in the bayou," Aiden told them. "Hayley wants to bring Hope with us. Mikayla's not sure about either because she doesn't want to piss off the Originals."

Caitlin and Auria looked at them in surprise.

Davina looked both shocked and slightly jealous of this revelation. "Wow." She laughed bitterly. "Good for them. If Kol had asked me to run before he got hexed? Well, he wouldn't have had to ask me twice."

Caitlin looked at her sympathetically.

Auria sighed, taking the manacles from Aiden. "But Mikayla's right. This could piss off the Originals so much. I hope they know what they're doing. Okay."

Auria set them down on the table.

Caitlin picked up a silver bracelet, setting the chain of the bracelet next to the manacles. "Let's say Auria and Davina do this. Aren't we forgetting one really important thing?" She looked at Aiden worriedly. "If Klaus finds out what you did--"

"Let me worry about that," Aiden told them.

Auria sighed worriedly, looking down at the manacles and the bracelet on the table.

--

St. James Infirmary

Hope was sitting in her playpen, messing around with toys.

Hayley and Mikayla were sitting at the stage of the club, talking.

"So, you think that Davina and Auria can turn the witch no-magic chains into a bracelet," Mikayla told her. "I don't know if this is insane or brilliant."

Hayley sighed. "Look, Mikayla, I know that you don't want to run. But I know that you want to protect me, protect Hope, and protect your wolves in any way that you can. And deep down inside, you know that this is the only way. If we stay and let the wolves fight against Dahlia, they will be killed, Mikayla. You know it."

Mikayla sighed. "I know. And they don't deserve that. They don't deserve any of it. I'm just wondering if we're not making a huge mistake."

"We're not," Hayley told her.

Mikayla looked at the wall behind Hayley to see green vines magically creeping up the outside and the inside walls of the building. They became so thick and numerous that eventually, they completely covered the windows.

Mikayla and Hayley stood, looking around the vines surrounding the walls.

Hayley walked toward Hope in her playpen, picking her up protectively.

The vines were now blooming with blood-red flowers.

Mikayla recognized the flowers from their encounter with Dahlia's proxies the previous day. "They're dahlias. She knows we're here."

--~--

Outside

Dahlia walked down the stone stairs that led to St. James Infirmary. She saw a nearby werewolf guard calling someone on a cell phone, flicking her fingers to knock out the cell service. "Vidau." The werewolf took the phone away from his ear, looking at it in confusion. Dahlia flicked her fingers, this time toward the safe house itself. "Vidau."

--

Inside

Hayley picked up her phone to call for help, but because of Dahlia's spell, the call didn't go through.

Mikayla tried to make a call on the landline phone, but the call still didn't go through. She hung up, turning to a werewolf behind her. "I need you to go get help. Now."

The werewolf walked out, leaving.

--

Outside

Dahlia walked toward the building.

The werewolf ran toward her.

Dahlia looked bored, thrusting her hand forward, twisting her wrist, using magic to snap the werewolf's neck, letting him fall to the ground, dead. She stepped past him, smirking, reaching the entrance to the jazz club/safe house. She stopped right outside the threshold, holding her hand horizontally in front of her, whistling the tune that she hummed to Freya as a child, which traveled across her flat hand and into the safe house.

--

Inside

Hayley was holding Hope.

Mikayla stood next to her.

They could hear the whistling of the chilling tune echoing into the room.

Hayley became terrified, while Mikayla became protective.

--

Marcel's Loft

Marcel was playing darts.

Noah was pacing nearby. "Rome is burning, and the Originals don't seem to be doing anything."

Marcel threw a dart. "The family is at their best when there's an enemy they need to take down. I guarantee that they've got a plan."

"Yeah, but I talked to Elijah and Kassandra," Noah told him. "They said that Klaus is doing things rogue. That he's not letting anyone anywhere near any of this. He's gonna get himself killed, therefore, you, me, Josh, and Caitlin. And an entire sireline of vampires."

Marcel sighed. "We've been through worse, right? We'll get through this. But you're right, Noah. Klaus doesn't seem to realize that he's the one standing in the way of everyone."

"So, what's the alternative?" Noah asked. "We can't go up against him. We got no way to put him down. No. Instead, here we are, gearing up for the fight of our lives, and all anyone can worry about is his next move."

Marcel paused for a moment as if he got an idea, throwing another dart at the dartboard, which hit the bulls eye right in the center.

--

St. Louis Cathedral - Bell Tower

Kassandra found Freya in the bell tower.

Freya didn't have to see her to know she was there. "Kassandra. I had a feeling I would be seeing you."

Kassandra walked closer. "I understand you built a marker for Father." She took out a knife, handing it to Freya. "You can use this."

Freya took off the sheath. "How did you--"

"Niklaus stole it from Mikael long ago," Kassandra told her. "He would use it... to carve these tiny little wooden figurines for Rebekah and me. Like your own, his was not a happy childhood. Art was something of a sanctuary for him. It remains so to this day."

"Do you tell me this so I might sympathize with him?" Freya asked, walking around the table so it was between the two sisters, turning to face her. "I assume Rebekah gave you my ultimatum."

"I don't accept ultimatums," Kassandra told her. "Nor will I choose between you and Niklaus."

"I will not trust my freedom to an alliance with Klaus," Freya told her. "Which means you will fight Dahlia alone, and you will lose."

"You came to us, tired of running, desperate to be free and searching for the kind of strength that can only come from family," Kassandra told her. "Now, with or without you, we will defeat Dahlia. And I would prefer you to be by our side."

"You would ask me to stay and watch as we all become Dahlia's chattel?" Freya asked.

Kassandra walked around the table toward Freya. "Stay, and we defeat Dahlia together. Or you may leave and consign yourself a life of solitude. Sister, is there really any choice?"

Freya turned to face her. "Klaus had a choice in whether or not he killed our father."

"You might not want to see it this way, but it is the truth, Freya," Kassandra told her. "Mikael sent all of us on the run for centuries until he died the first time. He tried to kill us all. Klaus, Elijah, Rebekah, me. Even Kol and Finn once upon a time. He killed ones we cared about to destroy us. Take the same rays of light that we had had that Dahlia had taken from you. Do not expect us to mourn him. But I am sorry that you are taking this so hard. Just, please, Freya... trust us to help you put an end to Dahlia like we put an end to Mikael and Esther."

"Swear to me that you will not allow Klaus to be our undoing, Kassandra," Freya told her.

Kassandra paused for a moment, but said nothing.

--

Abattoir Compound - Klaus' Painting Room

Klaus was continuing to paint his abstract piece with red, gold, and green/brown paint.

Cami walked in. "Bad time?"

Klaus looked at her. "Camille. Ah, yes. As I've recently proved disagreeable, I assume Elijah or Kassandra asked you here to play therapist to the savage beast."

Cami smiled innocently. "Actually, I was just gonna say you look like you could use some fresh air. Maybe we could go for a walk? You can spend, oh, five seconds not obsessing about who not to trust, and who you're gonna murder next?"

"I quite enjoy my obsessions, thank you very much," Klaus told her, returning to his painting. "Fear not, I shall tell Elijah and Kassandra you came as asked, and you may leave assured your duty is fulfilled."

Cami looked surprised and hurt by this reaction, walking closer worriedly. "Hey. Talk to me. And not because Elijah and Kassandra sent me."

Klaus sighed in frustration, turning to Cami, reluctantly nodding.

--

St. James Infirmary

Hayley was pacing anxiously, holding Hope in her arms.

Hope chewed on a toy obliviously.

"It's okay, baby girl," Hayley told her.

Mikayla heard approaching footsteps from outside the room, turning around.

Dahlia made her way to the entrance of the room.

Hayley clutched Hope tightly to her chest.

Mikayla stood in front of Hayley and Hope protectively, glaring at Dahlia.

Dahlia looked at Hope, clutching her heart. "What a beauty. Hello, my child. I--" She started to walk into the room. Mikayla started to lunge toward her. Dahlia tried to use magic, but was unable to. She stepped back out of the room, past the line of salt that sealed Josephine's disruption spell within the room. Mikayla stopped, knowing that if she stepped out into the hallway with her, Dahlia could have easily killed her. "I was wishing for a more intimate chat. Though I sense by entering, you would have me at a considerable disadvantage."

"Why don't you come on in?" Mikayla asked. "I would love to show you some hybrid hospitality."

"I only wanted to see the little one who has been promised to me," Dahlia told them. "Won't be long now. Surely you've noticed the spell protecting you is growing weaker."

"If you lay a finger on her, I swear I will make you suffer in ways even your evil mind can't imagine," Hayley told her.

Dahlia laughed, but continued speaking in a kind and gentle tone in hopes of winning them over. "Mikayla and Hayley, is it? The hybrid sisters of royalty. I have no quarrel with either of you. Esther made this bargain long ago. It's most unfortunate you've been dragged into it."

"You talk like you don't have a choice, but this is your doing," Mikayla told her.

"When I give my word, I keep it, and I expect others to do the same," Dahlia told them. "Esther and I made a bargain a long time ago, and so, you see, that child is rightfully mine. The only question you need to ask is, would you deny me, knowing that it would mean your deaths?"

"You're not taking her," Hayley told her angrily.

Dahlia sighed, trying to remain patient, ultimately deciding to humor them a little. "You're frightened for... your child. I can assure you, anything that Freya might have told you about our life together... well, she always had a flair for the dramatic."

"Well, it seems to run in the family," Mikayla told her.

"Well, then, of course, most of my troubles with Freya stemmed from the fact that I came for her so late in life," Dahlia told them. "She had such a strong memory of the family that I took her from. But Hope is so young. She won't cling to the memory of you, or cry for you in her sleep." Mikayla and Hayley were both enraged and devastated by this statement. "You can take comfort in the fact that for her, it will be as if you never existed."

Mikayla transformed slightly, letting her eyes glow gold and veins crawl beneath them, glaring at Dahlia angrily. "Come closer. Let's see how a witch with no magic does against me."

Hope started to cry.

Hayley looked at Hope worriedly.

Dahlia looked at Mikayla mockingly. "Mikayla, you've upset the child." She looked between Mikayla and Hayley. "It's a pity. You ought not to waste your last hours with her this way. You should spend this time saying your farewells. Nightfall tomorrow will come all too soon." She looked at Hope. "Goodbye for now, little one."

Dahlia walked out, leaving.

Hayley rocked Hope soothingly, kissing her on the forehead.

Mikayla let her eyes return to normal, turning to face Hayley and Hope, concerned, worried and anxious.

"Convinced yet?" Hayley asked.

Mikayla sighed, looking away, not knowing what to do.

The French Quarter

Klaus and Cami were sitting at an outdoor cafe table, drinking coffee and talking.

Nearby, several children were tap-dancing on the sidewalk for spare change.

Cami looked at Klaus. "Have you ever thought about how hard it must have been for Freya, being raised by this woman? I mean, you of all people should at least have some compassion for that."

Klaus was bored. "Yes, yes, poor Freya, but that's my point exactly. I, of all people, know whether the parent raising you loves you or loathes you, they still form who you are. After all this time, am I not Mikael's son? And, therefore, is Freya not just as dangerous as Dahlia herself?"

"We've been talking for twenty minutes, and that's the first time you've brought up Mikael," Cami told him.

Klaus sighed. "I see no reason to dwell on the deceased."

"You killed him," Cami told him.

"Yes, for the second time," Klaus told her. "Your point?"

Cami gave him a skeptical look. "You don't have any feelings about that?"

"My only feeling is a lingering sense of annoyance that he didn't stay dead the first time," Klaus told her.

"I don't believe you," Cami told him. "Mikael raised you."

"And I ended him," Klaus told her. Cami looked at him in concern and disbelief. Klaus shrugged. "I drove a stake through his heart."

Klaus smiled weakly.

Cami seemed even more unsettled. "Because he said he loved Freya?"

Klaus let his smile fall, shrugging it off. "Or, maybe it's just what I do? Kill my enemies, sometimes my friends. This may come as a surprise to you, Camille, but I'm not a terribly good person."

Klaus smirked.

Elsewhere

Josh and Aiden were walking down the street while they talk.

Josh sighed. "So, after I realized I was spending, like, three hours a day on Reddit, I just thought, 'This is stupid, you know? I'm just gonna start reading The Times Picayune.' Even though it's, like, the weirdest name ever for a newspaper, it's still--"

"Josh?" Aiden asked.

"Huh?" Josh asked.

Aiden smiled. "I love you."

Josh laughed in disbelief and happiness, which caused Aiden to do the same.

Josh realized why he was saying this, becoming serious and concerned. "Oh, no. What are you gonna do?"

"Look, here's the thing," Aiden told him. "I am who I am, okay? Loyalty is in my DNA. But, I can't live with myself if I'm someone who's spying for Klaus, because I'm not cut out to be a double agent. So, I'm gonna tell Jackson everything."

"What, because it's so much better to be killed by Jackson than Klaus?" Josh asked. "A--and even if he doesn't kill you, then what?"

"Then meet me in two hours," Aiden told him. "Let's get out of here and finally start our life together."

Josh was stunned. "Wow. You really want to just go?" Aiden nodded. "With me?"

Aiden smiled. "Like I said, I am who I am." He squeezed Josh's arm affectionately. "I'm a pack guy, and you are my pack now."

Josh was overwhelmed. "Wow, leave. Okay, um, wow." He chuckled. "I mean, I'm finally pronouncing all the street names right." Aiden chuckled. "And, I know I did die here and all, but well, this was the first place I ever felt like myself."

"I know this is all really fast," Aiden told him. "But, if you want this, I'll see you in two hours."

Josh swallowed nervously, smiling a small smile, too overwhelmed to speak.

Aiden took his silence as a rejection, looking hurt and disappointed, smiling sadly, turning around, walking away.

Josh rushed closer, stopping him. "Yes. I'll be there." Aiden sighed in relief and happiness. Josh put his hands on Aiden's neck. "Of course I'll be there."

The two pressed their foreheads together, looking in each other's eyes, kissing for a long moment., both looking happy and nervous for what was to come.

"Good," Aiden told him, turning to leave.

Josh caught his arm. "Aiden?" Aiden turned to look at him. "I love you, too."

They both smiled happily.

Aiden walked away.

Lafayette Cemetery - Kol's Playhouse

Davina was sitting at the table, holding Dowager Fauline's large paragon diamond, which reflected the sunlight from the windows into small rainbows on her face.

Caitlin and Auria were sitting across the table from her.

Marcel and Noah walked in.

"How you doing, little masterminds?" Noah asked.

"What's wrong?" Caitlin asked.

"Look, I know you've been going through a hard time," Marcel told them.  "Finn and Eva using Caitlin to try to get power, everyone using Caitlin to get to me. And you, Davina, holed up in here ever since Kol died, trying to bring him back..."

"What do you care?" Caitlin asked. "You and Noah hated him, anyway."

"We didn't hate him, Caitlin," Noah told her, making it rhyme, and making Caitlin smile at the fact that it rhymed. "We just didn't much like him."

"And, to be honest, I didn't really like him for Davina, you know?" Marcel asked. "I can be a little protective."

Davina, Caitlin and Auria scoffed in agreement at the same time.

"Yeah, understatement of the year," Auria told him.

Noah smirked. "Especially when it comes to you, Auria, and Davina and Caitlin."

Auria wandered around the tomb, looking through spell ingredients.

Davina looked at Marcel sadly. "You know, even though I appreciate you helping save me from Eva, Marcel, you never once bothered to ask me how I felt after Kol died, though Noah, Caitlin and Auria did. And even after all the crazy things I've been through, that was the worst. That's when I needed you the most."

Marcel sighed, walking closer. "You're right. I'm truly sorry that I wasn't there for you."

"But we have a problem," Noah told them. "Klaus."

"So what else is new?" Caitlin asked.

Noah looked at Davina. "Kol told me you guys were working on a weapon you could use against him. I heard it was a dagger, one that would work even on Klaus." Auria and Caitlin looked up, interested. "We need to know if you finished it."

"And what if we did?" Davina asked.

"Look, D, nobody in this city is safe with this witch Dahlia coming around," Marcel told her. "Now, Klaus is off the rails, and he won't trust anyone, not even Elijah and Kassandra, and he won't share the one weapon that will take down this witch. If things go south, that dagger might come in handy."

"Kol gave me that dagger for my protection," Davina told them. "I'll be the one that decides if it gets used."

Auria nodded barely. "That's a fair deal."

Caitlin sighed, nodding.

The French Quarter

Klaus walked down the streets of the Quarter.

Kassandra appeared, joining him, walking with him. "So I heard that you talked to Camille."

"Yes, sent by you and Elijah, Kassandra," Klaus replied. "Your transparent attempts to therapize me failed. I suggest you allow me to make my way home in peace."

"Enough of the games, Nik," Kassandra told him. "Now is not the time. I need you to stand with us."

"If by 'us', you mean you, Elijah and Freya, then I will not be standing with you," Klaus told her.

"She is the best chance we have to save your child," Kassandra told him in frustration.

Klaus turned to face her. "Yes, Kassandra. My child. Which is why, although she feigns innocence, I can't help but recall it was Freya who led our lunatic brother Finn to the safe house where he would have done God knows what if Elijah hadn't intervened."

"Elijah told me what happened after you broke your curse," Kassandra told him. "He told me that he was about to kill you. Just a few short years ago, he held your beating heart in his hand. And yet, here we are, still alive, still family. Now, we need her, Niklaus. Freya is our family. If you cannot see the greater picture here--"

"You see only around the next curve in the road," Klaus told her. "I am looking from above. Freya gave herself away when she complained of our single weapon to kill Dahlia. Now, I know there is a way to defeat our hated enemy without her."

"So enlighten me, and I will do everything in my power to help you," Kassandra told him.

"Forsake Freya, and I will let you in," Klaus told her.

Kassandra looked at him in frustration. "Nik, this is insane. Hope is also my family. Now, if you continue to walk this path, you will lead her towards harm."

Klaus looked at her angrily. "Do not fail to understand me when I say this to you. I will do whatever it takes to prevent this. So, the choice remains yours, sister. Freya, or me."

Klaus turned around, walking away, leaving.

Kassandra watched him go in frustration.

Alley

Aiden and Jackson were meeting.

Aiden handed Jackson the chain that Auria had spelled for them. "So, Auria says Hope shouldn't be able to do any magic if she's wearing that, and, uh, oh... To tell you, uh, goodbye."

Jackson nodded, pleased. "Hey, you did good, Aiden." He patted Aiden on the back, leading him down the alley. "Come on."

Aiden looked at him nervously. "Wait, uh, there's something I, um, need to tell you." Jackson turned to face him in confusion. Aiden was anxious. "Look, um, the reason you didn't get out of the compound last night was because of me."

Jackson chuckled. "Can't control traffic, buddy."

"No, I, uh... I didn't it on purpose," Aiden told him. "For Klaus." Jackson was stunned to betrayed. Aiden started to plead with him. "He sucked me in. He appealed to my stupid ego and he told me everything that I wanted to hear, okay?" Jackson turned away, rubbing his face with his hands in disbelief.  "Last night, he told me to watch you guys. Jack, if I would have let you escape, he would have killed me, but--" Jackson turned to face Aiden, punching him in the face forcefully. Aiden groaned, rubbing his jaw, turning to Jackson, looking guilty, grimacing in pain. "Guess I deserved that."

"This thing Klaus said that you wanted to hear, what was it?" Jackson asked.

Aiden hesitated for a moment, visibly embarrassed and ashamed. "Uh, he told me I'd make a good Alpha." He scoffed, chuckling bitterly. "What a joke, right? I mean, an Alpha would never turn on his pack."

Jackson started to calm down, sighing. "Neither did you, in the end." Aiden looked surprised to hear this. "All I know is today, you risked your life for me. And for Mikayla. So, you have to take my forgiveness."

Aiden shook his head in guilt. "No, I don't deserve to be part of the pack. So, I'm leaving. Uh, Josh and I are getting out of here."

Jackson was surprised. "Okay. If you need to take some time, like I did? Do it. But you'll always be part of this pack, okay? I'm not ready to lose you yet."

Jackson turned to leave.

Aiden was relived by his reaction to his confession, stopping him before he could go. "Hey, Jackson?" Jackson turned to face him. "Just... take care of yourself, you know? And watch your back with Klaus."

Jackson walked closer. "Come here, idiot."

Jackson and Aiden embraced. Jackson patted him on the back. Aiden laughed heartily.

However, unbeknownst to them, Dahlia had been watching them from across the street, watching Jackson and Aiden split up and walk in opposite directions.

St. James Infirmary

Kassandra, Eva/Rebekah and Elijah were here now.

Mikayla and Hayley were updating them on what had happened.

"Of course we tried to call for help," Mikayla told them. "But since Dahlia was able to take down both Kassandra and Mikael, I'm guessing that a cellphone tower was a piece of cake."

"And where were the wolves who stood guard?" Kassandra asked.

"Getting their asses handed to them by Dahlia, just like you did, Kassandra," Mikayla answered.

Kassandra rolled her eyes.

Klaus walked in. "That's it. You're coming with me to the compound."

"Where Dahlia sent Josephine this morning?" Hayley asked incredulously. "No way. We'd be sitting ducks, just like we will be here as soon as that spell breaks." She sighed. "Which is why we have to go."

Elijah and Klaus looked alarmed and unhappy.

Kassandra and Eva/Rebekah were confused and surprised.

Mikayla sighed. "Jackson is getting supplies, and then we're taking the wolves, and we're headed to the bayou."

"The swamp?" Klaus asked. "So my child can be protected by the very wolves Dahlia so easily defeated? Absolutely not."

Hayley pushed past Elijah, looking at Klaus angrily. "You know, I am so over taking advice from you. All it has done so far is put Hope in danger. From now on, we are going to do what I want. We're leaving."

Mikayla started to walk toward the door.

Klaus pushed Mikayla back next to Hayley to stop her. "You're not going anywhere unless I tell you to."

"They're not your prisoners, Nik," Eva/Rebekah told him. "And the wolves aren't your army to control."

"All of you, please," Elijah told them. "We're playing into Dahlia's hands."

"Not doing as I say plays into her hands," Klaus told them. "While you five have been kow-towing to Freya and devising ways to flee with your tail between your legs, I've been forging a new path. I know what Freya was planning, and I know how to kill Dahlia."

The French Quarter

Aiden stepped out of the Silhouetted Garden flower shop, holding the door open for a woman as he left with a bouquet of red roses.

The woman smiled. "Thank you."

Aiden nodded. "Sure."

Aiden walked away from the flower shop. He stopped when he heard Dahlia's whistled tune. He looked at the bouquet of red roses, finding that they were drying away and wilting by Dahlia's spell.

Dahlia walked closer. "Too bad. They were almost as young and beautiful as you."

Aiden was confused. "You--"

"Hello, Aiden," Dahlia told him. "Sweet boy. We should get started."

Dahlia turned around, pressing the tip of her index finger to her lips, using it to beckon Aiden forward.

Aiden resisted at first, but the spell forced him to follow her despite his best efforts.

--

Alley

Dahlia used the spell to drag Aiden into the alley, turning to face him. "Don't fear. This will be over quickly." She clenched her hand into a fist, punching the air, which telekinetically hit Aiden in the abdomen, causing him to double over in pain. "You are what is known as a tipping point... to set Mikaelson against Mikaelson." She flicked her index and middle fingers, using magic to claw two bleeding marks into his neck. Aiden yelled in pain, tears in his eyes. "It is true. You are a minor player, though it only takes one match to burn down acres of forest. In my plan to divide and conquer, you are the perfect kindling."

Dahlia swiped at the air with her other hand, causing another two claw-marks to appear on Aiden's face, which bled down his cheek, making him yell in pain.

Aiden looked to be in agony, crying. "Why are you doing this to me?"

"Because..." Dahlia trailed off, thrusting her arm forward, making a fist with her hand, causing Aiden to gasp in pain. A bloody spot appeared on his shirt from his chest. Aiden fell to his knees. "I need it to look convincing."

Dahlia opened her fist, using magic to rip Aiden's heart out, making it land in her open hand.

Aiden gasped one last time, falling dead to the ground.

Dahlia examined Aiden's heart in her hand, looking pleased, letting it fall to the ground next to Aiden's body, walking away.

Night - The French Quarter

Davina, Caitlin and Josh were walking down the streets.

Josh was packed up with a backpack, excited to be running away with Aiden. "Well, I promise, we'll move somewhere cool so you guys will want to come visit." Caitlin chuckled. "Any preferences? We've got Berlin, Rio, Jo-berg."

"You know we'd go anywhere to see you," Caitlin told him.

"You know, I hate to leave right after Kol and all," Josh told them. "It's just... I feel like a jerk."

Davina chuckled. "No, I'm glad for you guys. Really, I am. It'd be too depressing if one of us didn't get a happy ending."

Josh looked at Caitlin teasingly, nudging her with his shoulder. "Yeah, Caitlin."

Caitlin laughed. "Yeah, well, I'm happy with Noah. But you both know that we're not going anywhere."

Davina wrapped her arms around Caitlin. "Good. I need my best friend."

They laughed.

--

Alley

Davina, Caitlin and Josh reached the alley.  They saw Aiden on the crowd.

Josh dropped his backpack. "What the..." They ran toward Aiden. Josh knelt next to Aiden, shaking him gently, starting to cry. "No. No. No, no, no, no, no." He examined Aiden's slashed skin, biting his wrist in hopes of saving him with his blood. He saw Aiden's heart on the ground next to him, realizing there was nothing he could do, beginning to sob. "Aiden? Aiden?"

Josh was absolutely devastated, crying.

Davina and Caitlin were horrified and furious with Aiden's death, tears in their eyes.

--

St. James Infirmary

Klaus, Elijah, Kassandra, Eva/Rebekah, Hayley and Mikayla were arguing.

"Freya objected to us making a single weapon because it spoiled her plan," Klaus told them.

They heard Jackson's furious voice calling throughout the infirmary. "Klaus!"

"Jack?" Mikayla called in confusion.

They looked toward where Jackson and the wolves brought Aiden's dead body inside, placing him on the table.

Jackson was enraged. "Klaus!"

Mikayla looked at Aiden's body in horror and denial. "Oh, my God." Klaus, Elijah, Kassandra, Eva/Rebekah, Hayley and Mikayla walked closer. "What happened?"

"Klaus made Aiden spy on us," Jackson told them. "Instead, he told me everything." He turned to Klaus, giving him a mutinous look. "So you killed him."

Klaus looked at Aiden's body expressionlessly.

Hayley looked at Klaus in betrayal. "You killed one of the wolves sworn to protect our daughter?"

Everyone looked at Klaus, not sure what to believe.

Klaus looked upset for a brief moment, but pushed it down. "So what if I did?" He pointed at Aiden's body. "This is what happens to anyone who dares cross me."

"Just give us the word, Jackson," one of the wolves told him.

"Yes," Klaus told them sarcastically. "Come and have a go. But you'll be putting your life on the line for one who is all too willing to betray you. Perhaps this never would have happened if he'd had a real Alpha."

Jackson lunged for Klaus, punching him in the face. Klaus pushed Jackson back into the other wolves.

Mikayla rushed to get between them.

Klaus punched Mikayla out of the way.

Elijah stood between Klaus and Jackson, pushing each of them back, looking at the wolves. "Do you wish to die?'

Mikayla rushed closer angrily, pushing Elijah back. "You wanna kill me, too, Elijah?"

Elijah looked hurt and stunned by this response. "Mikayla..."

Kassandra stood in front of Klaus. "If you come at him, you come at me."

"You lot should make use of your time," Klaus told them. "I suggest burying your dead."

"Get out," Mikayla told him furiously.

"Niklaus, you mentioned a plan," Eva/Rebekah told him. "I recommend you begin. Hayley, Mikayla and Hope are safe for the time being and not going anywhere."

Klaus looked at Hayley, Mikayla and the wolves, smirking smugly, feigning a whisper. "Shan't be long."

Klaus turned around, walking out, leaving.

--

Marcel's Loft

Marcel, Noah and Auria were talking, stunned and in shock, having just learned about Aiden's death.

"I can't believe this is happening," Auria told them.

"Klaus has lost his damn mind," Noah told them.

"You really think those wolves are gonna fight to protect Hope now?" Marcel asked.

Noah shook his head in disbelief.

Davina and Caitlin walked in, crying, devastated.

"Noah?" Caitlin asked. "Auria? Marcel?"

Marcel, Noah and Auria looked at them, walking closer instantly.

"Caitlin?" Auria asked worriedly. "Davina?"

"We just heard," Noah told them. "Is Josh with you?"

"No," Caitlin answered. "When Jackson came to get Aiden's body, he just took off."

Marcel looked at them sympathetically, wrapping his arms around Davina and Caitlin. "C... D... I'm so sorry."

Davina and Caitlin returned the embrace, crying silently, pulling away.

Auria, Davina and Caitlin embraced for a moment, pulling away.

Caitlin walked toward Noah, forcing herself to stop crying.

Noah pulled Caitlin into his arms, also embracing Davina, who cried against his chest.

Davina pulled herself together, wiping her tears away. "I brought something for you."

Davina reached into her purse, pulling out the gold dagger, handing it to Auria.

Noah, Marcel and Auria were in shock to see it.

"Is that what I think it is?" Auria asked.

Davina nodded. "The dagger Kol and I made. I want you to use it. I want you to put Klaus down."

Marcel took the dagger from Auria, nodding barely, looking at them comfortingly, protectively.

St. James Infirmary

Elijah and Hayley were standing at the bar, talking.

"Nice job today," Hayley told him sarcastically. "First Klaus kills Aiden, and then you defend him?"

"I was defending Hope," Elijah told her.

"Yeah?" Hayley asked. "Well, if that's true, then what happens now? Somehow, I don't think that Klaus is going to be able to save us."

"He loves her," Elijah told her. "I love her."

Hayley looked at him desperately. "Well, if you do, then let us leave."

"If you went to the bayou, I can't protect you from Dahlia," Elijah told her. "Or Niklaus."

"We have a way to keep Hope from doing magic," Hayley told him. "Dahlia won't be able to track us down." Elijah looked stunned. "Jackson and Mikayla know every inch of the bayou. They can protect us. And, I know that Marcel and Noah and Auria will help us get out of the city. The only thing standing in our way is you."

"What are you asking me to do?" Elijah asked.

Hayley took Elijah's hand. "We can't run from Dahlia and hide from Klaus at the same time. You wanna protect us? Buy us some time."

They looked toward where Mikayla and Jackson were standing.

(Song:) Maybe They Will Sing For Us Tomorrow (Remastered) - Hammock

Hope was sleeping in her playpen.

Mikayla wrapped the bracelet Auria spelled around Hope's wrist, looking at her worriedly. She turned to see Jackson behind her, tears in her eyes, devastated over Aiden's death.

Jackson pulled Mikayla into an embrace.

Mikayla wrapped her arms around him, fighting back tears, breathing shakily.

Abattoir Compound - Courtyard

Klaus walked in.

Kassandra walked toward Klaus to confront him. "Tell me you didn't do it."

Klaus stopped in his tracks, sighing deeply. "Kassandra..."

"I saw how upset you were when the wolves accused you of killing Aiden," Kassandra told him.

"I admitted to killing Aiden, Kassandra," Klaus told her.

"And I don't believe you," Kassandra told him. "Maybe you were right. Maybe about everything. Even Freya. Maybe she's not what she seems. Maybe she is out to get you, and twisting everyone against you, and maybe she is this terrible person. At least she would fit right in to this family. We're all terrible, Klaus. We're all monsters. The devils that our parents raised us to be. But you know what she didn't do, Nik? She didn't just kill Aiden, one of the wolves sworn to protect your daughter."

"And neither did I," Klaus told her in frustration.

Kassandra didn't look surprised, sighing. "Why did you tell them that you did?"

"If I've spilled Crescent blood, then Hayley and Mikayla will be forced to question the pack's loyalty to Hope, and they will not run," Klaus told her.

"Or they'll question their loyalty to you, and run they will do," Kassandra told him.

"No one will believe either of us if we confessed my innocence in the murder of Aiden, Kassandra," Klaus told her. "You know that as well as I."

Klaus rushed out of the room.

Kassandra watched him go, sighing deeply.

Klaus' Painting Room

Klaus walked in to find Elijah already there.

Elijah was looking out of the window, holding one of the paintbrushes in his hand, holding it up. "You put them in the paint. Father's ashes, the earth from sacred ground, all hidden in plain sight."

Elijah put the paintbrush down, turning to face Klaus.

Klaus gave him an unamused look. "What are you doing here? You're supposed to be guarding Hayley and Mikayla."

"They're gone," Elijah told him. "Mikayla and Hayley took Hope, and you will not find them, brother."

Klaus looked at him furiously. "You helped them escape? With my daughter?"

"Well, someone had to protect that child," Elijah told him.

Klaus became so enraged that he rushed toward Elijah, pushing him back over the railing to the balcony overlooking the city. "How dare you?" Elijah grabbed Klaus' arm, twisting it and him around, throwing him into the room, making him crash into one of the tables, breaking it. Klaus rushed toward Elijah, throwing him onto another table, holding him down by the chest. "I'm a hybrid, Elijah. Why provoke a fight you cannot win?"

Elijah pulled out the golden dagger, driving it into Klaus' chest, making him scream in pain, pushing them both upright, driving the dagger the rest of the way into Klaus' heart. "For Hope."

Klaus started to desiccate, falling to his knees, becoming weaker.

Freya and Eva/Rebekah walked out of hiding, watching him.

Klaus fell to the floor, completely desiccated.

Kassandra heard the fighting from outside, rushing inside. "What the hell just happened?"

"Hayley and Mikayla have Hope," Elijah told her. "They and the wolves are on the move. They're on the run. They can't hide from Niklaus and fight against Dahlia at the same time. I had to buy them some." Kassandra stepped toward Klaus' body. Elijah stepped in her way. "Kassandra, don't."

"What are you going to do to me, Elijah?" Kassandra asked. "Are you going to dagger me, too?" Elijah didn't answer. "When he wakes, he will punish us all. Are you ready for that?"

No one answered.

Church tower bells in the distance started to play Dahlia's tune.

--

Balcony

Kassandra walked onto the balcony, listening to the church tower bells ring along to the eerie lullaby.
