chapter 18 - Night Has a Thousand Eyes

Outfits in the external link

From 2.16 "Save My Soul", in the dining room of the compound, Klaus, Elijah, Kassandra and Freya sat at the table.

Kassandra: (voice over) "Previously on Worlds Colliding (The Originals)"

"Dahlia is the most powerful witch I've ever seen," Freya told them. "She craves more power still, and that is why she will come here, to take the child's power for herself."

From 2.16 "Save My Soul", in Kol's Playhouse, Davina and Eva/Rebekah were talking.

Eva/Rebekah looked at her in concern. "Have you gotten any sleep lately?"

"I've been here studying all this stuff since Kol died," Davina told her.

From 2.15 "They All Asked For You", in the tavern, Klaus and Aiden were talking.

"The wolves need a new leader," Klaus told him. "I can help you become the leader your pack deserves."

From 2.15 "They All Asked For You", in the LaRue Mansion, Marcel, Caitlin, Auria and Josephine were talking.

Auria stepped closer to Josephine. "I will do anything to set things right between us."

From 2.17 "Exquisite Corpse", in the warehouse, the wind blew around fiercely, blowing around Kassandra, Caitlin, Auria and Freya's hair.

Vincent, Eva and Caitlin were still unconscious, lying in the salt circle.

Marcel and Noah stood nearby.

Elijah and Kassandra knelt on either side of the unconscious, channeled Freya.

Auria knelt next to them, holding her hands over her unconscious body, channeling her, her eyes closed

The teenagers, including Davina, all started to wake.

From 2.17 "Exquisite Corpse", in the Quarter, Various New Orleans covens, vampires, werewolves, the Mikaelsons, Hayley, Mikayla and Caitlin were gathered in the Quarter, as celebration in Auria's honor for saving all of the children and helping take down Eva Sinclair.

Josephine put a necklace around Auria's neck. "This yours now, Auria. It's a witch's talisman that will magnify your power immensely. Will give you the power to protect yourself, and others. You might very well be what brings peace to this city. Or the closest thing that New Orleans has seen." Josephine and Auria smiled, embracing, pulling away. "You more than made up for the wrong you've done. Welcome back, Auria."

The crowd applauded.

Auria looked over the Quarter, smiling.

From 2.15 "They All Asked For You", in the cemetery, Klaus, Kassandra, Elijah and Freya were talking.

"Dahlia has the power to kill anyone who stands in her way," Freya told them.

"And you know how to stop her?" Elijah asked.

Freya nodded. "Given the proper material, yes. I've sent Father to procure them."

"You put the life of my child in the hands of Mikael," Klaus told her, turning to leave.

From 2.16 "Save My Soul", in the courtyard, Klaus and Kassandra were talking.

"Nothing will happen to that child," Kassandra told him. "But we have to consider every weapon at our disposal."

From 2.14 "I Love You, Forever", in the nursery, Hayley was holding Hope.

Kassandra: (voice over from 2.16 Save My Soul) "Dahlia is coming."

Day One

Morning - The French Quarter

(Song:) Straw Dance - Jessy Greene

Hayley and Mikayla were walking down the streets of the French Quarter.

Hayley was pushing Hope in a stroller.

They passed by street musicians who were playing various instruments.

Hope cooed at Hayley.

Hayley giggled, tickling Hope.

"Well, now that we're both here with Hope, and we can bring her out in public, what should we do now?" Mikayla asked.

"Oh, I'd ask to see your old haunts, but we do have an impressionable young lady with us," Hayley told her, tickling Hope again. Hope giggled. Hayley looked at Mikayla. "So, Mikayla Waters. Mikayla Labonair. Alicia Labonair. Mikayla Labonair-Kenner. How is it possible that one girl has so many names for herself? And she didn't even make them up like a spy on those movies. You're not gonna turn into a spy, are you?"

Mikayla chuckled. "Only when it comes to the pack and the family."

They laughed.

They came upon a violinist on the sidewalk who was playing the upbeat tune, so they stopped to listen.

Hayley looked at Hope. "Whoa!"

The violinist continued playing the tune a little longer, smiling, dramatically ending the song.

(Song Ends)

Mikayla smiled, dropping some money into her violin case. "Thanks."

Hayley, Hope and Mikayla continued on.

(Song:) From the Shadows - Jessy Greene

The violinist played a much slower tune. It was eerie and chilling.

The girls stopped.

Hayley looked at the violinist, unnerved.

The violinist looked toward them.

Mikayla looked at Hayley in concern.

Hayley looked at Mikayla. "That song... what is it?"

They looked back at the violinist, who was still staring at them creepily, starting to walk away.

(Song Ends)

Mikayla scanned the surroundings, seeing a waiter writing a message on the chalkboard outside of a restaurant that read:

A promise made is a debt to be paid.

Hayley and Mikayla exchanged a nervous look, playing it cool in case someone was watching.

A man approached, holding a large black dahlia flower bouquet in his hand. "Flowers, ladies." He held the flowers toward Hope. "A gift for the child."

Mikayla stepped in so Hayley didn't have to. "Uh, no, we're all right. Thank you."

"You sure?" the man asked, holding up the flowers, smiling creepily. Hayley and Mikayla looked at him suspiciously. "Black dahlias are in bloom. They're quite lovely."

Hayley started to push Hope past the man.

The man grabbed Hayley's arm. His eyes turned completely white.

Klaus appeared, pushing the man against a light post, gripping his throat. "Show yourself, witch."

The man's eyes returned normal.

Mikayla was overwhelmed by an unknown force. Her eyes turned completely white.

"Mikayla!" Hayley told her in concern.

Klaus turned to face them.

"I am here," Mikayla/Dahlia told them. "I am everywhere. And I intend to take what is mine."

Hayley looked terrified.

Mikayla groaned as the spell was taken away, looking at them in horrified confusion. "What the hell just happened?"

Klaus sighed. "Dahlia."

Worlds Colliding (The Originals)

--

Abattoir Compound - Dining Room

Klaus, Elijah, Kassandra, Eva/Rebekah, Hayley, Mikayla and Freya were talking, sitting around the table.

Klaus looked at Hayley and Mikayla. "Isn't that the point of a fortress? It does a better job protecting you when you stay within its walls."

"Okay, we get it," Hayley told him. "Let's just figure out what we're gonna do."

Klaus stood. "What I would like to do is take a strong leash--"

"Children, please," Elijah told them. "Niklaus, your ire is justified, however Hayley and Mikayla are quite right. We need to find a new strategy. Freya, if you please."

Freya was pouring tonic, sighing. "This spell you described. Dahlia calls it 'kenning'. Using proxies to watch her enemies from afar. But I've never seen it done on quite this scale. Especially possessing a hybrid such as Mikayla."

"Awesome," Mikayla told them sarcastically. "So, basically every hurricane-chugging, boob-flashing tourist on Bourbon street is a potential spy."

Hayley looked at Mikayla. "So much for your promise about not turning into a spy."

Mikayla turned her head to give Hayley a halfhearted look.

Hayley smiled innocently.

"The good news is I know a little bit about how her magic works," Freya told them. "This tonic will at least prevent her from using any of us."

Eva/Rebekah took a tonic cup. "Well, come on. Should work like a charm. Bottoms up."

Elijah, Kassandra, Hayley and Mikayla each took a cup, taking a drink.

Elijah held a tonic cup toward Klaus. "Niklaus, is there something you wish to contribute?"

Klaus stepped closer, shrugging. "I prefer biscuits with my tea."

Kassandra rolled them eyes. "Of course."

Kassandra took another drink.

"Besides, our minds are far too strong to be invaded by kenning spells," Klaus told them. "Hayley and Mikayla are baby hybrids, not as strong as we are." Hayley and Mikayla gave him a look. Elijah took a drink. "No, what we experienced was a test. Dahlia's watching to see how we respond to aggression. She's preparing for battle. My guess is sooner rather than later."

"Well, if she was watching us, she'd know we have our own army," Mikayla told them.

"She also knows where we are," Elijah told them. "Given the immense nature of her power, we simply have no idea what to expect. What we need is to create a new stronghold, something that Dahlia knows nothing about. A sanctuary from any witchcraft."

"That's a fine strategy," Freya told them. "I offer another. We could use Mikayla to trace magic back to its source. Find out exactly where she is."

Mikayla tilted her head.

Everyone looked at Mikayla.

Mikayla sighed. "Fine. I volunteer, then. I guess."

"Good," Kassandra told them. "Then it's settled. Off you pop to your respective tasks. Me? I've always been of the opinion that the best defense is a good offense. So, I'm gonna find a way to murder that godforsaken witch."

Kassandra smirked deviously.

--

Lafayette Cemetery

Davina and Caitlin were sitting at the altar.

Marcel and Auria stood nearby.

Auria was wearing her talisman, using it to grow blossoming plants and flowers around the saddened cemetery.

Davina and Caitlin watched them bloom beautifully around them, smiling.

Marcel looked around. "Now, that's more like it. It was enough of doom and gloom around here."

"Well, it is a cemetery, so..." Caitlin trailed off.

"It is also a sacred place for the witches," Davina told them. "The last thing I want is to always be reminded of all the evil and bad things that happened here every time I'm here."

Kassandra walked closer. "So, Auria, you fulfill the witches' wishes, and they grant you a talisman that you can channel that makes you even more powerful than you were before, and this is what you do with it? Blossom and bloom flowers and plants in the City of the Dead?"

Auria walked down the steps of the altar toward her. "It was too depressing, even for me. What do you want, Kassandra?"

Kassandra smiled. "Well, perhaps I'm merely concerned about you. You do seem to spend an inordinate amount of time in graveyards. It's a rather morbid habit. Especially in the cemetery that is run by the witches that once stood against you."

"Well, I am touched by your concern," Auria told her, crossing her arms over her chest in amusement. "And most of the witches forgave me and apologized to me when I saved Davina, Caitlin and the children. There are a few that still hate me, but I can handle them."

Marcel looked at Kassandra knowingly. "Anything else?"

"Now that you mention it, there is one matter with which I can use some help," Kassandra told them. "It appears that my sister, Freya, has dispatched my father Mikael to gather some items we require, and I'm guessing you have the means to find him."

"Sorry," Davina told her. "I'd love to help. But I'm a little busy mourning another dead boyfriend."

Davina started to walk past.

Kassandra put up a hand to stop her. "Do you think you're the only one who grieves my brother? I miss him, too, you know."

Davina sighed, taking a step back. "Whenever he spoke about you, he said that you were the only one that seemed to care. And that the others didn't care so much that he forgot that you did."

Kassandra nodded barely. "I understand you hope to bring Kol back. Resurrection spells can be very tricky. They tend to require a remnant from the dearly departed. I myself am the guardian of Kol's remains. The ashes of his true body. Now, I might be inclined to entrust them to you, were I myself feeling helpful."

Auria walked closer. "Fine. We'll find Mikael for you, and you'll give us Kol's ashes, and then me, Davina, Rebekah and I can try to find a way to bring him back. But I'm not doing this for you, Kassandra. I'm doing this for Davina."

Kassandra chuckled, looking from Auria and Marcel. "Yes, Davina, one of the girls you took under your wings." She looked at Caitlin. "The other is sitting right there. Caitlin, how do you like it when Auria acts as your and Davina's surrogate mother, and when Marcel acts as both of your surrogate father?"

Caitlin shrugged. "At least they're better than our real parents, who tried to have us killed."

Kassandra smirked, looking at Auria and Marcel. "And then there's Noah, who helps you all and is just as much as family to all of you, not to mention Caitlin's love. You two have to protect and help these two children in any way you can. Is that right?"

"Don't mock the girl that is helping you," Marcel told her.

"I can step out as easily as I stepped in," Auria told her. "Deal?"

Kassandra smiled.

Aiden's Apartment

(Song:) Lucifer's Eyes - T.O.L.D

Josh and Aiden were shirtless and laying in bed together, holding each other's hands.

"We should probably get up now," Aiden told him.

Josh nodded. "Yeah, definitely. Hundred percent."

Aiden turned toward him. "So, it's settled, then? Huh?"

"I'm basically already out the door," Josh told him.

"Oh, yeah?" Aiden asked.

Josh smiled. "Or, we could stay in bed all day long."

Aiden chuckled. "Ooh."

"You know, some Netflix, Chinese food... probably some other stuff," Josh told him.

They laughed.

Aiden's phone began to buzz, interrupting their conversation.

Aiden grabbed it from the table, looking at the Caller ID, sitting up. "Oh, I should probably get this. It's Jackson."

Josh was slightly suspicious. "Yeah, no, I got it. Wolf business. I'm gonna grab a shower."

Josh got out of bed, walking into the bathroom.

(Song Ends)

Aiden waited until he heard the water start to answer the phone. "Yeah?"

Klaus' voice was on the other line. "Aiden." He was pacing around in the compound. "It seems your queen Mikayla has been compromised, manipulated and used."

Aiden was worried, pulling on his pants. "What? What happened?"

"Relax," Klaus told him. "Mikayla is fine. While my hands are full, I need you to serve as my eyes and ears. Get to the compound and report back anything I should know. Especially where my daughter's concerned."

Aiden was anxious. "Uh, yeah, sure thing. I'm on my way."

"Good lad," Klaus told him.

Aiden hung up, looking conflicted.

--

Abattoir Compound - Mikayla/Jackson's Room

Mikayla sat on the bed, stressed and guilty.

Hayley walked in. "Hey. Where's Jackson?"

"Dealing with the wolves," Mikayla answered.

"And why aren't you?" Hayley asked.

Mikayla sighed, looking up. "That witch got in my head, Hayley. I could have hurt you and Hope." Hayley sighed, sitting next to Mikayla. "I can feel her. Dahlia... she is nothing but darkness. The Mikaelsons are way out of their league with this one."

Hayley seemed to be thinking. "Then I say we take Hope and Jackson and the pack and we leave town. Tonight."

"We can't just run from our home, Hayley," Mikayla told her.

"You and Hope are my home," Hayley told her. "And running isn't a sign of weakness. It's what wolves do. You, Jackson and the wolves know every since of that bayou. And I learned a lot of it when I was out there with you guys. Out there, we're the predator. We can keep Hope safe. At the very least, it will buy some time to figure out how to get rid of Dahlia for good."

"What about the Originals?" Mikayla asked. "They're Hope's family."

Hayley sighed in frustration. "You know who else is part of this family? Dahlia." Mikayla sighed, looking away. "Now, I don't back away from a fight, okay? But this one started a thousand years ago. It's not our war. And it's certainly not my daughter's."

"I just really don't want to make anything worse," Mikayla told her.

"The only thing worse is staying behind for the slaughter," Hayley told her. "Now, we can stay here, and the wolves can protect Hope, if you all want them to be killed. I know you would do anything to protect me, Mikayla. And Hope, and Jackson, and your pack. But staying here is not going to protect them. It's going to be the opposite."

Mikayla sighed, looking away.

--

The French Quarter

Marcel and Auria were sitting on one of the benches.

Caitlin and Davina were sitting across from them on another bench.

Kassandra walked closer.

"So, what do you want with Mikael?" Marcel asked.

Kassandra sighed. "I'm simply getting the necessities that we need to take down my crazy Aunt Dahlia before she harms my sweet niece Hope."

"Mikael isn't gonna be too happy when he finds out that you're trying to get his help," Davina told her.

Kassandra sat down on the other side of Caitlin, smiling sarcastically. "And I am shaking in my boots at the mere thought of his displeasure."

"But you used to be terrified of him," Caitlin told her. "All of you did. Your siblings, other than Freya. Even Klaus was. You were so scared that he could kill you or use someone you loved to get to you so he could kill you."

Kassandra took out the indestructible white oak stake to show them. "That's why I have the white oak stake, Caitlin. Now nothing he has can kill us."

"But you were also scared he could use someone you loved to get to you so he could hurt you, Kassandra," Caitlin told her. "Mikael killed Diego to get to you. Just like Esther killed Oliver to get to you. Because they were the only things that you got even close enough to caring for for over many, many years, because you are too damaged to care about anyone outside of your family, because your brother killed all of your other loves. It must really suck to have to be you all the time."

Kassandra tilted her head slightly, looking away. "It hasn't been a picnic, honestly."

"You know, thing is, even though you don't have anyone to use against you or to have you manipulated, you don't have someone you love more than anything, even yourself," Auria told her. "And in truth, that's a lot worse than it sounds like, isn't it? Even though I would rather die than to face the pain of losing another person... I would rather die than not feel anything for anyone at all outside of family, too. It must be lonely, in the worst possible way. Your family destroyed you, and yet you can't turn your back, walk away or let them go. At least you have them to love, if not anything else. But sometimes that's not enough, is it?"

Kassandra looked at them, only slightly amused. "Caitlin, Auria, you two trying to become the next Cami O'Connell, are you? Trust me, darlings, if I need someone to psychoanalyze me, I'll give her a call."

"You're deflecting because you don't wanna admit how much they're right," Marcel told her. Kassandra didn't answer, looking away in annoyance. Marcel looked toward the street. "Kassandra, there."

Kassandra followed his gaze.

A taxi pulled over.

Mikael got out of the taxi.

Kassandra rushed over to stand behind him, closing the taxi door.

Mikael turned to face Kassandra.

The taxi drove away.

"Well, well, well," Mikael told her. "If it isn't the youngest Original herself. What are you doing here, Kassandra?"

"Instead of you trying to kill me or my siblings, I'm wondering if our interests might be better served by joining forces," Kassandra told him. Mikael raised his eyebrows slightly. "You know full well the threat we face." Kassandra crossed her arms over her chest, stepping closer. "So, how about it... Father? Care to join your youngest living child on a witch hunt?"

Mikael smirked, clearly intrigued.

St. James Infirmary

Klaus, Elijah and Noah were standing in the middle of the club, which looked as if it was in the middle of renovation.

Josephine walked in, looking around, smiling. "Well, this was quite the place back in my day. St. James Infirmary. Vulgar. Filthy. Loud. Some of the best nights of my life. But, I assume you didn't go through all this trouble on my account."

"As you know, for years, this place served as neutral grounds for both our communities," Noah told her. "A place where all were welcome and safe."

"And, in keeping with that tradition, we'd like to invite you to cast a spell," Elijah told her. "One that would prevent the use of magic within these walls."

"You'd ask me to create a place where my kind would be utterly powerless?" Josephine asked.

Noah smirked. "Josephine, powerful as you are, surely you must have sensed this grave new threat?"

Josephine nodded. "And I am not without empathy, but I have a responsibility to the witches. This is not our fight. I only came to this meeting as a return of favor to Auria for saving the children."

Klaus looked at her, displeased and irritated. "Well, then, I do hope you understand that anyone willing to stand aside and allow my family to be threatened... I would be forced to consider an enemy."

Josephine gave them a hard and mildly offended look. "As I said, Mr. Mikaelson. I am not without empathy." She looked around the building. "Perhaps a traditional blessing to dispel unwanted spirits? A barrier against those who mean to do us harm?" The boys smirked approvingly. Josephine thought about this for a moment, nodding, smiling a small smile. "Yes, a blessing combined with a disruption spell should do the trick."

Klaus, Elijah and Noah seemed happy with this compromise.

Rue St. Louis Bar & Restaurant

(Song:) Fingerprints - Kita Klane

Mikael and Kassandra were sitting in a diner at a table next to a window.

A waitress walked closer, looking at the white oak stake in Kassandra's hand. "You want some fries with that stake? I got one just like it at a local voodoo shop."

Kassandra smirked. "I'll have a bourbon, please."

The waitress looked at Mikael.

"Nothing," Mikael told her. "Leave us."

The waitress walked away, leaving.

Mikael looked at Kassandra.

Kassandra looked up in annoyance. "What? You're starting to feel familial after reuniting with your precious Freya after a thousand years? Yes, I know all about it. And Rebekah also said that you once told her that you were only after Niklaus. But that obviously was a lie. You tried to kill each and every one of us. So, whatever fatherly rubbish you're thinking, save it. Because every meeting with you my siblings have had has ended in disaster, aside from Freya. And I thought it might not hurt to meet you alone to see how mine would go. But let's cut to the chase, shall we? Freya told me she sent you off to procure certain items that will expedite the death of your sister-in-law. May I assume you completed your task?"

"There are three elements total," Mikael told her. "Combined, they represent Dahlia's sole weakness." Kassandra tilted her head curiously. "If you'd like to try and take them, by all means, have at it."

"Your mind always drifts to violence, doesn't it?" Kassandra asked. "Even when you're so clearly outmatched." She held up the white oak stake to prove it. "What was it you tried teaching us? Oh, yes." She tilted her head back, smiling tauntingly. "'The true Viking warrior hones their fear like a blade'."

"Did you come here to critique my parenting skills?" Mikael asked.

"I came here to suggest we focus on our common enemy," Kassandra answered. "Rather than bringing your materials to Freya, drawing her into a fight she may not survive, why not join me? If we win, Freya and Hope will be free. If we lose... well, at least you die knowing there was someone strong enough to finish the task that you were never able to. Killing your children."

Mikael looked away out of the window.

Kassandra looked at the stake in her hands.

(Song Ends)

Abattoir Compound - Courtyard

Mikayla was laying on a table, sighing.

Freya was drawing an infinity symbol on Mikayla's forehead, using the burned end of a sage smudge-stick.

Hayley and Eva/Rebekah were watching worriedly.

"By doing this, we should be able to trace Dahlia's signature all the way back to the source of her power," Freya told them. "But, I'll need to dig deep. Mikayla, she might use you to talk to us again. Are you ready for that?" Mikayla looked nervous, nodding. "Rebekah, if I may channel you?"

Eva/Rebekah looked uneasy, nodding in agreement.

Hayley looked at Mikayla in concern. "Are you sure you're okay with this?"

Mikayla nodded. "Piece of cake."

Hayley sighed.

Eva/Rebekah and Freya held hands, holding them over Mikayla, beginning to chant the spell. "Inveniere potencia reparon malifica. Inveniere potencia reparon malifica."

The spell to dig deep in Mikayla was causing her pain, making her gasp and arch back.

Hayley watched worriedly.

The spell was enough to make Mikayla groan a scream of pain.

Rue St. Louis Bar & Restaurant

(Song:) High Tiding - Nick Waterhouse

Mikael and Kassandra were sitting at their table. They now had glasses of bourbon.

Kassandra took a drink. "Father daughter day is going swimmingly, don't you think? But you, working with your family instead of against..." Mikael sniffed at his drink, recoiling. "I admit, I never thought I'd live to see the day. That's something, coming from me."

"And what makes you think I need your help?" Mikael asked.

"You may be a vicious and hateful beast, but if you could kill Dahlia on your own, you would have done so by now," Kassandra told him. "But together, we can murder that witch."

"And why would I trust you?" Mikael asked.

"Because of our lives depend on it," Kassandra answered. "Even yours, like it or not. Dahlia will go through you to get to Freya if she has to. She will go through all of us to get to Hope. See, we're all fighting for the same thing, Mikael. We're trying to save the lives of the only people who don't see us as the monsters that we truly are."

"All right, Kassandra," Mikael told her. "Tell me what you propose."

"You have the means to make the weapon we need," Kassandra told him. "All that remains is to go for the kill."

They saw movement from the window outside, turning to look.

A woman with white eyes, a kenning spell victim, touched the window, making the windows shatter.

Mikael and Kassandra stood, walking a short distance away to avoid the glass, but not being hurt all the same.

The woman walked away, leaving.

"It would appear Dahlia shares that sentiment," Mikael told her, walking past Kassandra.

Kassandra grabbed his arm to stop him, making him turn to her. "One final hunt together, then. Do try to keep up, old man."

Mikael gave Kassandra a look, walking out, leaving.

Kassandra smirked, following.

--

Abattoir Compound - Courtyard

Mikayla was still lying on the table.

Eva/Rebekah and Freya still stood on either side of Mikayla, holding their hands together over her body, casting their spell.

Hayley stood nearby, watching worriedly.

Mikayla stopped squirming from the pain, looking up with white eyes. Dahlia was speaking to Freya through Mikayla. "There you are. After all these centuries. Hello, my Freya."

Hayley looked worried. "Dahlia."

--~--

Mikayla still had white eyes and the infinity symbol on her head. Dahlia continued to speak through her to Freya. "How convenient that I find you here, mere footsteps from that which is owed to me. Let me guess. Did you make a promise to your wretched siblings? 'Together we'll fight the wicked witch, side-by-side?'" She laughed in amusement. "Tell me, darling, how did they respond to your overtures? Did they welcome you with open arms and weep tears of joy at your miraculous return? Hmm?"

Freya was near tears. "When you find me, what are you going to do to me?"

"You always were a selfish, ungrateful child," Mikayla/Dahlia told her. "For centuries, I fed you, clothed you, and cared for you. Granted you powers beyond anything you could have ever dreamed. And still, you yearn for more. Always wishing for another life, never satisfied. Soon enough, you will beg for me to bring you back into my home." She laughed dramatically. "After all, once I am done with these poor souls, I will be the only family you have left. You should know better than to defy me. A lesson your father and sister Kassandra will learn shortly."

Dahlia left Mikayla's head to free her from the spell.

Mikayla closed her eyes, gasping, opening her eyes to reveal them to be normal once again. She sat up, breathing heavily. "Well, that worked. Please tell me I never have to do that again."

Hayley pulled Mikayla into her arms worriedly and comfortingly. "Never again."

Mikayla, Hayley, Eva/Rebekah and Freya looked at each other nervously.

Freya shook her head worriedly. "Kassandra's in trouble."

Alley

Davina and Auria were kneeling on the ground of the alley, conducting a spell, pouring salt onto the cement in the shape of magical sigils.

Caitlin knelt on the other side of the symbol, lighting candles for them.

Kassandra and Marcel walked closer.

"This is it, Kassandra," Davina told her. "One last favor, and if you don't give me his ashes, I swear, I will--"

"Davina, whatever you may think of me, I am a woman of my word," Kassandra told her.

Mikael walked into the alley from behind Kassandra, standing beside Kassandra skeptically. "Woman? You were still just a girl when your mother and I turned you into a vampire."

"When you killed me, thank you very much," Kassandra replied. "And at least I'm better than you, old man. A liar, a beast and a degenerate." Caitlin, Auria and Davina stood. Marcel looked at Mikael warily. Kassandra looked at the four of them. "But in this exception instance, he may be of some use."

"Dahlia's minion remains within St. Anne's Church," Mikael told them.

"Clearly, it's a trap," Kassandra told them.

"Of course it's a trap," Mikael told her. "And how good is it that we bring surprises of our own?"

Kassandra and Mikael exchanged a look, smirking.

Marcel looked between them in confusion. "Wait. So you two are friends now?"

"Absolutely not," Kassandra answered. "But he seems to like me a lot better than he likes some of my siblings, doesn't he? Although he did try to kill me. But he can see nothing like he can see his dear and precious Freya. We merely aligned out of necessity for the purpose our family enjoys the most. Glorious murder." Caitlin rolled her eyes. "In fact, you'll be helping."

"You said you needed a binding spell," Auria told her.

"And here, my lovely little witches, is what you will bind," Mikael told them, pulling out two full leather pouches and a bottle of blood out of his pockets, handing them to Auria one at a time. Auria knelt in front of him on the other side of the symbol of salt, setting the objects on the ground in the symbol. "Soil from Dahlia's homeland, that which links her to this mortal coil. Along with Viking ash, that of her oppressors, the source of her immense hatred. And finally, blood of her adopted child. My beloved daughter Freya. The closest thing to love that miserable witch has ever known."

"All the sources of her power bound together form a weakness," Auria told them. "So, what do you want us to do?"

"Simple," Marcel told them. "Bind those ingredients to a weapon."

"Well, are we supposed to go to the toy store and get a slingshot?" Caitlin asked.

Marcel smiled a small smile, walking closer.

Auria and Mikael stood.

Mikael took out a knife. "Use this."

Kassandra rolled her eyes. "You just wouldn't be you if you didn't have a knife."

Mikael handed the knife to Auria, looking at Kassandra. "Well, perhaps you can steal it later and dull its blade by cutting into your brother's horrid... artwork."

Kassandra smirked. "There was a portrait or two of me that I loathed. They made me look too... delicate and sweet."

Auria sighed, looking from the knife in her hand to the ingredients to kill Dahlia. "To bind these together, I need a powerful binding agent. Something like what Finn and Eva wanted. Caitlin."

Caitlin sighed. "You know, we all knew the link was powerful, okay? But can I somehow tap into that power and put it to more use than being a blood bag?"

Caitlin held her wrist toward Auria.

Kassandra and Mikael seemed amused.

Auria smiled a small smile. "Doesn't work that way, Caitlin."

Caitlin sighed. "I know."

Kassandra let the smirk fade. "Do us this favor. Help us end this evil witch's reign, and I will live up to my end of our bargain. I swear it on my life, Davina, that I want Kol back from the dead as much as you do."

Caitlin hesitated, reluctantly agreeing, nervous for all of them. "I hope you know what you're doing."

Auria took Caitlin's wrist, cutting her palm with Mikael's knife, letting the blood drip over the sigils.

Marcel watched worriedly, watching as he gained a similar wound in his hand that healed quickly.

Abattoir Compound - Courtyard

Klaus and Elijah had returned home to talk to Hayley, Mikayla, Freya and Eva/Rebekah.

"There is a jazz club in Algiers by the name of St. James Infirmary," Klaus told them. "Noah has acquired it, and Josephine is fortifying it as a sanctuary against magic." He turned to Hayley. "Pack your things. Noah will escort you and Hope there tonight at nine o'clock." Hayley rolled her eyes.  "Mikayla, I trust that you will do everything you can to protect them."

Mikayla nodded. "Dahlia used me to talk to them again. She was in my head. She is nothing but darkness."

"She intends to make her move tonight," Freya told them. "Kassandra and our father will be her next victims." She looked at Klaus, near tears. "I understand your mistrust, Klaus, but I did not come this far to see my family die at the hands of the very evil that I've tried for so long to escape. I'm begging you. Help me save our sister Kassandra and father."

"Tell us what you need," Elijah told her.

"Dahlia will lure Kassandra and Father into a trap," Freya told them. "She prefers places of darkness. She'll be drawn to any site that's been steeped in death."

Eva/Rebekah rolled her eyes sarcastically. "Well, welcome to New Orleans."

"Oh, no, I'm talking about dark power created by massacre," Freya told them. "Sacred ground that's been stained with the blood of the innocent."

They realized where Dahlia would choose such a place.

St. Anne's Church

Mikael and Kassandra walked into St. Anne's Church, looking around the empty sanctuary, walking down the aisle.

"Well?" Kassandra asked. "What are you waiting for..." She turned to face the door. "You crone?"

Mikael held the blade to kill Dahlia.

Kassandra turned to see Dahlia standing at the alter.

"Now that you've arrived, not a thing," Dahlia answered, beckoning them forward with a wave of with either hand. "Let us begin."

Several people filed into the room, surrounding Mikael and Kassandra.

Mikael chuckled. "We are well met. So be it. Kassandra." He looked at his daughter. Kassandra looked at him. "Are you ready?"

"I was born ready," Kassandra told him, transforming. The crowd ran toward them from all sides. Kassandra bit into one man's neck, feeding forcefully for only a moment, ripping his throat out, letting the body fall. "I was a bit famished." She wiped a little of the blood from her mouth. "Thank you."

Mikael snapped a man's neck, letting him fall.

A woman ran toward Kassandra. Kassandra grabbed her, throwing her against the wall, making her break her neck in the process and fall to the floor.

Mikael snapped a man's spine, letting him fall.

Kassandra flipped a man onto the ground, pushing a heel of her stiletto through his throat to kill him, turning to see a woman behind her running closer, grabbing her, throwing her into another one of her pursuers, making them both fall, taking her heel out of the man's throat.

Mikael lunged for a woman. The woman raised her hand toward Mikael, casting a pain infliction spell, making him scream in pain and hold his head.

"I should've warned you," Dahlia told them. "My acolytes are rather formidable." Mikael groaned in pain, standing. "I gifted them with a fraction of my own power." The woman used magic to throw Mikael a distance through the air to make him land and shatter a wooden pew. "To help level the playing field."

Kassandra lunged for the woman. The woman used magic to throw Kassandra into the balcony railing from up above, making the railing break and Kassandra fall to the floor.

Abattoir Compound - Mikayla/Jackson's Room

Jackson was sitting on the end of the bed, looking through the map of the bayou he had drawn inside his leather bound journal.

Aiden arrived, leaning against the doorway, knocking on the door.

"Hey, come on in," Jackson told him. "Shut the door." Aiden walked in, closing the door behind him. "You're my right hand, Aiden." Jackson stood, walking closer. "You've always been loyal, brave. I want you to know I don't take that for granted. That's why you're the only one I can trust with this." Aiden looked both confused and worried at this admission. "We need to get the wolves out out of here. Tonight. Hayley wants to come with us and bring along Mikayla and Hope."

"Right under Klaus' roof?" Aiden asked worriedly. "He's gonna kill you."

Jackson chuckled bitterly. "Klaus will kill me for leaving dishes in the sink. It's all the more reason to run."

"I'm not joking," Aiden told him. "He will find out. He has his ways. You know that."

"I have a route mapped out through side streets and back roads," Jackson told him. "But between Dahlia's spying and Klaus' ways, we need to get out of here fast. I need you to get a car and meet us at the service entrance at 8:45. I mean exactly 8:45. Noah's coming at nine."

Aiden sighed. "Yeah, of course. I'll be there."

Jackson patted Aiden on the shoulder, walking past him toward the door. He stopped, turning to face him. "I'm not doing this just for Mikayla, Hayley and Hope, Aiden. I'm doing this for the pack. No more of us should have to die for the Original Family's sins." Aiden looked as if he agreed, but also looked like he was worried about what Klaus would do. "We have to go."

Aiden didn't say a word, though he nodded anxiously as if he was agreeing.

St. Anne's Church

Mikael and Kassandra stood, looking at each other, nodding.

A man ran toward Kassandra. Kassandra snapped his neck, letting him fall.

Mikael snapped a man's neck, letting him fall.

Kassandra bit into a girl's neck, ripping out her throat, letting her fall.

Mikael ripped out the heart of a man, letting both fall.

Kassandra saw three men running toward her from three different sides. Man 1 ran toward her. Kassandra grabbed him, pushing him against the wall, putting the heal of her stiletto through his throat to kill him. The two other men ran toward Kassandra from either side. Kassandra ripped out their hearts, letting them all fall, taking the heel of her high heel out of the man's throat, letting him fall. A woman ran toward Kassandra. Kassandra bit into her neck, feeding ravenously.

Abattoir Compound - Courtyard

Aiden was leaning against one of the support beams in the courtyard, visibly anxious, thinking about his current dilemma.

Josh arrived and joined him, looking apologetic.

"Josh, hey," Aiden told him.

"Okay, look, before you say anything, I'm sorry I lied to you about my sketchy phone call with Klaus this morning," Josh told him. "I'm a jerk." Aiden looked confused for a moment, realizing what Josh was talking about, sighing. Josh gave him a sarcastic look. "Wait, my bad. I accidentally did your side of the conversation. Let's start over. You go."

"You overheard the phone call," Aiden told him.

"Uh, yeah," Josh answered, pointing to his ear. "Vamp-hearing, dude. You can turn it on and off, but I'm nosy. Particularly when my boyfriend is conducting secret business with the guy who, you know, murdered me on my spring break."

Aiden looked at him guiltily. "I... just didn't want you to get involved, okay?"

Josh frowned. "Involved in what?"

Aiden tried to play it cool, patting Josh affectionately on the shoulders. "It's nothing, okay? I've got it all taken care of."

Aiden turned to walk away.

Josh grabbed his arm to stop him, turning him to face him. "Hey, Aiden. What's going on?"

Aiden shook his head awkwardly. "No, I just..."

"Please," Josh told him.

Aiden sighed, looking at him anxiously, not wanting to drag Josh into it, but knowing that he had to tell someone. "I don't know what to do. Jackson's got this big escape plan with the pack, Mikayla, Hayley and the baby tonight, and if I don't tell Klaus, then he'll--"

"Cut your head off with a dull butter knife?" Josh suggested.

Aiden nodded. "But Jackson's been looking out for me since we were kids. I can't just stab him in the back."

"I don't know if you have a choice," Josh told him worriedly.

"He's not doing this for himself or for this family," Aiden told him. "He's doing this for his pack, to protect us, to try to keep us alive. You don't know what that's like."

"You don't have to be a Crescent wolf to love your friends," Josh told him. Aiden sighed, swallowing nervously. "Look, it's fine. We're gonna--we're gonna figure this out. Okay?"

Aiden nodded, sighing.

Josh took Aiden by the hands, squeezing them comfortingly.

St. Anne's Church

The fight continued.

Mikael and Kassandra snapped the necks of two men each, letting them fall.

Everyone else was dead.

Dahlia applauded slowly. "Quite the operatic performance. Though, that is the thing with these grand tragedies." Mikael took out the knife that they planned to use to kill Dahlia. "In the end, all the heroes die."

Dahlia held her hand toward them, casting a pain infliction spell.

Mikael and Kassandra were in pain, but not as much as she wanted.

Dahlia made the spell harder and more painful, making them fall to their knees and groan in pain.

Mikael dropped the knife.

Dahlia's spell started to cause Mikael and Kassandra to desiccate.

Abattoir Compound - Mikayla/Jackson's Room

Mikayla was getting ready to leave. "Hayley? We have to go. Noah's coming soon. I know you want to leave leave, but I think we should just go with Noah."

Hayley walked in, holding Hope, both dressed for cold weather. Hayley had a large bag full of their things over her shoulder.

Hope looked as if she was scared, whimpering, almost near tears.

Hayley looked at Mikayla. "I know you think we should just go with Noah, but we can't. Klaus, Elijah and Kassandra are the oldest and most powerful vampires in the world, and Dahlia's got them scared. If she takes them down, I don't want Hope to be around to see what happens next."

Mikayla looked at her sympathetically, walking over, gently putting a hand to Hope's head to soothe her. "Do you really think that this is the best plan to protect her?"

Hayley nodded. "I really think that this is the best plan to protect us all."

Mikayla didn't look convinced, worried.

Mikayla and Hayley walked out of the room with Hope.

--

St. Anne's Church

Kassandra struggled to pick herself off the floor.

"You struggle with such fierce passion, all in defense of the ones you love," Dahlia told her. Kassandra crawled toward the knife on the floor. "An honorable quality. One which I had not anticipated given the reputation which precedes you, Kassandra. Still, you know nothing of true love, my dear."

Kassandra grabbed the knife from the floor. "Like you do?"

Kassandra stood, trying to stab Dahlia.

Dahlia used magic to push Kassandra back and drop the knife. "No, I don't. I haven't felt that kind of love... in a very long time. And you will never know that kind of love again." She used magic to make Kassandra desiccate faster. She looked at Mikael. "And you." She stepped closer. "Husband of my sister, you, I would like to make suffer."

Dahlia started to strangle Mikael with magic.

Freya walked in. "Enough. Leave Kassandra and my father be. Let them go."

Dahlia released Mikael. "My Freya." She walked toward her. "You do realize that this so-called family of yours is simply using you for your power."

"No," Freya told her. "You're the one who used me. For a thousand years. No more."

Dahlia used magic to strangle Freya. "So be it."

Mikael grabbed a broken piece of the pew, rushing toward Dahlia. "No!" He stabbed Dahlia in the stomach, pinning her against the alter. Freya fell to the floor. Elijah knelt next to Freya. Mikael looked at Dahlia angrily. "Stay away from my daughter."

Dahlia used magic to push Mikael away to the floor, making him fall.

Klaus knelt next to Kassandra, feeding her his blood to heal her.

Kassandra looked from Klaus to the knife on the floor. "Nik."

Klaus saw it.

Dahlia stood. "Don't you know... I'm too powerful to kill?"

Dahlia tossed the wooden piece of the pew aside.

Elijah rushed toward Dahlia.

Dahlia used magic to push Elijah to the floor.

Klaus grabbed the knife from the floor, rushing toward Dahlia, jumping to try to stab her.

Dahlia disappeared, leaving Klaus to crash into the wooden alter and shatter the wood, falling to the floor.

Klaus looked around for the knife, but it seemed to have disappeared. He stood, turning to face the others.

Elijah and Kassandra stood, looking at Klaus, then each other.

Abattoir Compound - Courtyard

Marcel, Noah, Josh and several other vampires walked into the compound to move Hayley and Hope to St. James Infirmary so they would be safe from Dahlia.

--

Hayley's Room

Noah walked into the room after knocking on the door frame. "You ready?"

Marcel stood in the doorway.

They were both concerned when they found the room empty.

--

Nursery

Noah walked into the nursery, seeing that Hope was no longer in her crib, either.

They all split up, searching the compound, which was completely empty of people aside from themselves.

--

Courtyard

Marcel and Noah found the service entrance doors wide open.

All of the vampires regrouped in the courtyard after they had checked out the entire compound.

"Noah, any sign of them?" Marcel asked.

Noah shook his head. "No. Something's wrong. Fan out and find them. Now."

The vampires all split u to do as told, searching for them.

--

Outside

Jackson, Mikayla, Hayley and Hope were in the alley behind the compound, waiting.

Hope was making whining noises.

Hayley tried to soothe her.

Jackson sighed, anxiously rubbing his hands together. "He should be here by now. Something must have happened."

--

On the Road - Aiden's Car

Aiden was waiting in the driver's seat of a parked Jeep, anxiously rubbing at his face, contemplating what he should have done. He checked the clock on his phone, which read 8:52 PM/20:52. After a moment, he became frustrated, angrily punching the steering wheel of the car.

--

Abattoir Compound - Outside - Alley

Jackson, Mikayla, Hayley and Hope were waiting.

Hope began to cry.

Mikayla wrapped a blanket around Hayley and Hope to keep both of them warm.

Noah rushed toward them, looking at them suspiciously. "Everything okay?"

Jackson looked a little alarmed.

Mikayla played it off, giving Noah a look. "Took you long enough, Noah. Are we going to Algiers or what?"

"Right now, that club is the safest place in town," Noah told them.

Jackson, Mikayla and Hayley walked past Noah with Hope.

Noah turned after them, still suspicious, following them.

--

St. Anne's Church

Freya was kneeling next to Mikael.

Elijah, Klaus and Kassandra were standing together.

They heard Dahlia's voice, turning toward her. "We all have weaknesses." Dahlia disappeared. "You came here, united, hoping to exploit mine." They turned to see her by the door. "And in doing so, you lost the one thing that you could have used against me." Dahlia held up the knife. "The weapon you created. Now rendered useless."

Dahlia dropped the knife into a fire, using magic to destroy it.

Freya started to run forward. "No!"

Kassandra held her back.

Dahlia used magic to put the flames out. "Now that we've dispensed with that little trinket, perhaps we can focus on the issue at hand. After all, I seek only that which is owed to me, nothing more. Give me the child, and you all may live. Deny me, and, well... you've had a taste of my power. I can't imagine you hunger for more."

Dahlia disappeared, leaving them alone.

Everyone looked at each other.

Bywater Tavern

(Song:) Ride - Black Coast feat. M. Maggie

Josh was sitting at the bar.

Aiden arrived and joined him. "I told him it was traffic. Jackson was furious, but he bought it." Josh smiled sympathetically. "So, I guess I live another day."

Josh handed him a beer. "Yeah? So, how about tomorrow?"

Aiden sighed, shaking his head. "How could I be so stupid? The moment Klaus looked at me, I should have run in the opposite direction. Josh, I'm so sorry about all of this."

"Yeah, me, too," Josh told him. He rolled his eyes sarcastically. "I mean, mainly because if Klaus hurts you, I'm gonna have to seek vengeance. Psycho-ninja-style. And I think we both know how that's gonna go." Aiden chuckled bitterly, rolling his eyes slightly, drinking his beer. Josh looked at him for a moment, smiling. "Hey." Aiden looked at him. "This isn't your fault. No more than it was my fault for getting my neck snapped in some crappy dive-bar. This is what Klaus does."

Aiden nodded, whispering. "Yeah."

Josh squeezed his arm affectionately. "Aiden, I've kinda been on my own my whole life. And then, suddenly, everything was different. Because of you."  Aiden smiled weakly. "You are my pack. You, Marcel, Noah, Caitlin, Auria, Davina. And, yeah, I'd die for all of you, because I don't think I could go back to how it was before."

Aiden was genuinely moved by his words, unable to help a smile. "Look, we're gonna figure this out. Together."

Josh nodded.

Abattoir Compound - Courtyard

The remaining of the Mikaelsons, including Mikael himself, had returned to the compound.

Mikael and Kassandra were clean of blood, from the victims, of course.

Kassandra sat at the bar, drinking.

"Well, that sounds like a bloody fiasco," Eva/Rebekah told them. "Where's Dahlia now?"

"She could be anywhere," Elijah told them. "Wasn't a trace of her at the church."

"She's done with us for the night," Freya told them. "No doubt she wants us to take some time to wallow in our defeat."

"Defeat?" Kassandra repeated, putting her glass down, turning to face them. "I disagree. We saw her face, we took her measure. If that's the best she's got, quite frankly, I'm unimpressed."

"Her aim was not to impress us, Kassandra," Mikael told her. "She wanted us to reveal our sole weapon. And like fools, we did."

"Am I hearing things, or did our father have a civil exchange of words with someone other than Freya?" Klaus asked. "Either way, enough. My patience, like this farce of a reunion, is at an end."

"Agreed," Elijah told them. "There really is only one question here. What exactly are we doing?"

"This was not my plan," Freya told them. "You rushed it and made but a single weapon. Of course she took it from you. And now we've lost what advantage we had, and used up the very materials we needed to kill her."

"That's a bit histrionic," Kassandra told her. "Your materials are easily found. Let's take stock, shall we? There's an ample supply of your blood. Norwegian soil is hardly scarce. Caitlin Harris' blood as a powerful binding agent so that the weapon itself can work. What else? Ah, yes. The ashes of Dahlia's Viking oppressors."

"Only priceless relics gotten with great difficultly at a museum," Mikael told them.

Klaus rushed toward Mikael, pushing him against the wall, pushing the tip of the white oak stake into his heart, but not staking him. "Then we should get some more, shouldn't we?"

Freya walked toward them. "No!"

Elijah held Freya back.

"If I feel even the faintest touch of your magic, Freya, I will end him with a flick of my wrist," Klaus told her. He looked at Mikael. "You don't seem surprised."

"Betrayal is in your nature, boy," Mikael told him.

"No," Klaus told him. "I wasn't born like this. None of us were. Her? You fight for her. Lovely Freya, the daughter you barely know. You fought alongside Kassandra today even after you nearly killed her just because she sided with me. You and Kassandra made quite the team today even after you nearly killed her. Yet there was a time when you knew me as your son. A time before all the disappointments, the revelations of betrayal. There were moments when all you had to do was be my father. And even then, you despised me, didn't you?" He had tears in his eyes. "I want to know why."

Mikael shook his head. "I don't know. I just did."

Klaus let two tears fall, nodding as if he had expected this. "Are those your final words?"

Mikael shook his head, looking at their long lost sister. "Freya... I'm so sorry. I love--"

Klaus angrily staked Mikael in the heart.

Freya struggled, screaming in denial and devastation. "No!"

Freya started to cry.

Klaus let go of Mikael, backing away.

Mikael stepped forward, weakly, reaching toward Freya, falling to his knees, then to the floor, desiccating. His body burst into flames.

Freya fell to her knees, crying.

Klaus turned to face the siblings. "Viking ash is indeed rare. But all you really need is a burning Viking corpse."

Klaus started to walk past.

Freya stood to try to retaliate.

Elijah restrained Freya.

Klaus walked out, leaving.

Eva/Rebekah, Elijah and Kassandra didn't have a reaction to their father's death because of the many, many centuries he had spent chasing them to the ends of the earth in an attempt to kill Klaus and any of them if they stood in his way.

The French Quarter

(Song:) From the Shadows - Jessy Greene

Josephine was walking down the street past the abattoir compound. She suddenly saw a violin player with her back turned toward her. She listened to the woman play for a long moment, smiling. "Your technique is exquisite."

(Song Ends)

The violinist turned around, revealing that she was, in fact, Dahlia. She looked at Josephine. "Do you play?"

Josephine looked down sadly at her swollen hands, laughing bitterly. "No. Not in some time."

Dahlia, in a surprising act of kindness, took Josephine's hands in her own. "Allow me to help you change that."

Dahlia blew on Josephine's hands

After a moment, Josephine flexed her fingers, marveling at the fact that she was healed. She cried in joy, examining her hands, looking at Dahlia. "Dahlia, I assume?"

Dahlia smirked, taking a bow. "Indeed. Now, if you'll beg my pardon, Madame, I must use you to send a message to all those who would side against me."

Josephine was disappointed at this turn of events, nodding in defeated understanding. "I suppose there's no promises an old witch could make to another?"

"Sadly, my dear, there's nothing you can do for me that I cannot do for myself," Dahlia told her.

Josephine swallowed nervously, nodding, gesturing to Dahlia's violin. "May I, then? One last tune?"

Dahlia handed the violin to Josephine.

(Song:) Last Call - Jessy Greene

Josephine dramatically held the violin up, beginning to play an upbeat melody for a moment, relishing in the fact that she was playing for the first time in decades, the last time ever.

After a moment, Dahlia shushed her.

(Song Ends)

Josephine stopped playing, looking as though she was in a daze.

Dahlia took the bow from Josephine, circling around her to stand behind her, using the bow to slit her throat, letting her fall to the ground, leaving Josephine to bleed to death in the street with the violin at her side.
